PFT’s Week 12 2022 NFL awards

Getty Images

A dozen weeks are in the books. It’s time to acknowledge those who made the biggest impact on the game during Week 12.

It’s the weekly PFT awards. One winner for each of five categories, with plenty of finalists who at least merit having their names named.

All winners and finalists appear below. Feel free to provide feedback in the comments.

Offensive player of the week: Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts.

On Sunday night against the Packers, Hurts became only the fourth player to accomplish one very specific feat.

In the same game, 150 yards passing and 150 yards rushing.

Hurts has become a short-list MVP candidate for his abilities and his leadership, helping propel his team toward 10-1. He has become a much better passer, but his running combines the raw athletic skill of Lamar Jackson and Justin Fields with the uncanny ability of Patrick Mahomes to understand how his body moves in space relative to the players trying to tackle him.

Hurts helped lift the Eagles to 336 rushing yards against Green Bay, and to keep them ahead of the Cowboys for the division title, and the Vikings for the No. 1 seed.

Other finalists: Raiders running back Josh Jacobs (303 yards from scrimmage), Jets quarterback Mike White (315 passing yards, three touchdowns), Vikings receiver Justin Jefferson (nine catches, 139 yards, touchdown), Jaguars receiver Zay Jones (11 catches, 145 yards, two-point conversion), Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence (321 passing yards, three touchdowns), Bengals receiver Tee Higgins (seven catches, 114 yards, one touchdown), Panthers receiver DJ Moore (four catches, 103 yards, touchdown), Browns running back Nick Chubb (116 rushing yards, touchdown).

Defensive player of the week: 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa.

His stat line doesn’t scream out dominance — one sack, one tackle for loss, two quarterback hits. But the 49ers pitched a shutout on Sunday against the Saints, and Bosa was the most important part of the defensive effort that delivered it.

Ultimately, Bosa’s sack came with the 49ers leading 13-0 and the Saints facing fourth and goal from the four.

Enter Bosa. Exit the Saints. And for a fourth straight game, the 49ers haven’t given up a point in the second half. In this one, they didn’t give up a point in the first half, either.

Other finalists: Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits), Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons (two sacks, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hits), Bengals defensive lineman Sam Hubbard (one sack, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hits), Bills defensive tackle Ed Oliver (one sack, two tackles for loss, two quarterback hits), Panthers linebacker Brian Burns (two sacks, one tackle for loss, three quarterback hits), Raiders defensive end Maxx Crosby (1.5 sacks, one tackle for loss, six quarterback hits).

Rookies of the week: Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett.

Kenny Pickett is ready for prime time. And to continue to be a starting quarterback in the NFL.

The numbers weren’t eye popping. He completed 20 of 28 passes for 174 yards against the Colts. But he looks the part, making throws when they need to be made — and running when running is the only option. He gained 30 yards on the ground against Indy.

His best throw of the night, combining lateral mobility and needle-threading accuracy, secured a two-point conversion and a seven-point lead.

Every rep he gets this year will prepare him for next year. And while it may be too late to climb back into the 2022 playoff race, it’s never too early to get a head start on 2023. The Steelers and Pickett are doing just that.

Other finalists: Jets receiver Garrett Wilson (five catches, 95 yards, two touchdowns), Jets running back Zonovan Knight (103 yards from scrimmage), Titans receiver Treylon Burks, Commanders running back Brian Robinson (125 yards from scrimmage, touchdown).

Coach of the week: Bengals coach Zac Taylor.

The Bengals had managed to stay under radar for most of the season. After beating the Titans in Tennessee, they’re blipping conspicuously in the heart of the screen.

Taylor’s team beat the Titans in large part by shutting down running back Derrick Henry. Defensive lineman Sam Hubbard (one of the finalists for defensive player of the week) told PFT by phone after the game that the goal was to get to Henry quickly, given that he leads the league in yards after contact.

“We really put an emphasis on tackling well and swarming them,” Hubbard said. “It’s gonna take more than one to get him down.”

Henry busted a long gain on a screen pass. “We said, ‘That’s it, no more big plays,’” Hubbard said. “We did a good job rallying after that.”

Hubbard also echoed a message that Taylor had for the locker room after the game. Even though other AFC teams may get the hype, the Bengals can’t be ignored.

“Everyone’s got to play us,” Hubbard said. “Whatever anyone else says about other people, at the end of the day they got to play us. That’s our mentality.”

It’s a lot like their mentality from 2021. And that mentality took them to the Super Bowl.

Other finalists: Jets coach Robert Saleh, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, Vikings coach Kevin O’Connell, Jaguars coach Doug Pederson.

Play of the week: Raiders running back Josh Jacobs’ 86-yard touchdown run in overtime.

Nearly 35 years to the day after Raiders running back Bo Jackson ran 91 yards for a touchdown at Seattle and disappeared up the tunnel of the long-gone Kingdome, Jacobs had a walk-off 86-yard run in overtime to cap a franchise-record 303 yards from scrimmage.

As Jacobs told Peter King of Football Morning in America, Jacobs (who has found plenty of general motivation from being in a contract year, thanks to the new regime not picking up his fifth-year option) drew specific motivation from a Seahawks fan who had a sign that said, “3-7. NOT BAD FOR A TEAM WITH NO TALENT.”

“He was screaming at us, all this bad stuff,” Jacobs said. “I just looked up at him and said, ‘Thank you for that. I needed that today. You turnt me up.’”

And, in one play, Jacobs turned out the Seahawks.

Other finalists: Titans receiver Treylon Burks’ 51-yard catch, and his fumble recovery in the end zone for a touchdown, Jets receiver Garrett Wilson’s 54-yard touchdown catch, Commanders cornerback Kendall Fuller‘s game-saving interception, two-point conversion by Jaguars for the win, two point conversion by the Chargers for the win, Vikings defensive back Kene Nwangwu‘s 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett‘s game-tying touchdown throw to tight end David Njoku on fourth and 10.

PFT’s NFL 2022 divisional round picks

Getty Images

Six postseason games down, seven to go.

MDS won the wild-card round with a 5-1 record. I went 4-2.

This week, we disagree on one of the four games.

For the year, I’m 181-96-1. MDS is 177-100-1.

For this week’s takes and picks, scroll away.

Bengals (+3.5) at Titans

MDS’s take: The Titans are healthier right now than they were during the regular season, and I’m expecting them to play one of their best games and remind everyone that the road to the Super Bowl in the AFC goes through Tennessee.

MDS’s pick: Titans 27, Bengals 20.

Florio’s take: Derrick Henry makes a huge difference for a team that went 6-3 without him. The Cincinnati offense lacked the killer instinct on Saturday against the Raiders, allowing Las Vegas to hang around for far too long. While the Bengals may indeed be a Super Bowl contender in 2022, it feels like they’ve reached the end of the road. The Titans, in contrast, are just getting started.

Florio’s pick: Titans 24, Bengals 17.

49ers (+6) at Packers

MDS’s take: The Packers benefited from the bye week while the 49ers played a tough, physical game in Dallas that left them banged up. Playing Saturday on a short work week, the 49ers will struggle.

MDS’s pick: Packers 30, 49ers 17.

Florio’s take: One team’s quarterback is Aaron Rodgers. The other team’s quarterback is Jimmy Garoppolo. Need I say more? (I will anyway.) San Francisco’s defense will have a hard time keeping Rodgers from torching it, especially if Nick Bosa (concussion) can’t go. Rodgers has limited shots at winning another Super Bowl. This may be his best, and possibly his last, as a Packer.

Florio’s pick: Packers 27, 49ers 20.

Rams (+2.5) at Buccaneers

MDS’s take: Both of these teams won blowouts last week, but this should be a hard-fought game. I trust Tom Brady in the fourth quarter of a close playoff game more than I trust Matthew Stafford.

MDS’s pick: Buccaneers 28, Rams 24.

Florio’s take: It won’t be easy for the Bucs. They’ll need to commit to the run in order to set up the pass. Throw too much, and Tom Brady may soon be putting the ball up for grabs in order to avoid getting his 44-year-old body banged around. If the Rams can’t run effectively, quarterback Matthew Stafford may eventually make a fatal mistake.

Florio’s pick: Buccaneers 23, Ram 17.

Bills (+1.5) at Chiefs

MDS’s take: The best game of the divisional round features two quarterbacks who were outstanding in the wild card round. I trust Patrick Mahomes a little bit more than Josh Allen to play that well again in the divisional round, so I’ll pick the Chiefs.

MDS’s pick: Chiefs 31, Bills 28.

Florio’s take: This one has game of the year potential, with the Bills ready to exorcise more demons and the Chiefs potentially on their heels as they try to slow down Buffalo’s offense. Crazy as it sounds, Kansas City should consider slowing things down and limiting possessions in order to avoid letting the Bills fast-break their way to 40 points.

Florio’s pick: Bills 41, Chiefs 28.

PFT’s Week 16 NFL Power Rankings (final)

Getty Images

[Editor’s note: Now that Week 15 is fully and completely in the books, here are the final Week 16 power rankings.]

1. Packers (11-3, last week No. 1): Another No. 1 seed for the team and another MVP for Aaron Rodgers are within reach. Can they finish the job this year?

2. Chiefs (10-4, No. 5): Three straight Super Bowl appearances suddenly isn’t out of the question.

3. Rams (10-4, No. 4): After three straight losses, three straight wins. How many more will there be?

4. Cowboys (10-4, No. 7): Ugly wins are still wins, especially when other high-end NFC contenders are losing.

5. Patriots (9-5, No. 2): The lack of energy in the first half was almost as uncharacteristic as Bill Belichick apologizing for treating reporters the same way he has treated them for 22 years.

6. Buccaneers (10-4, No. 3): A 17-game season is a war of attrition, and the Bucs lost a huge battle on Sunday night.

7. Colts (8-6, No. 10): They’ll go as far as Jonathan Taylor takes them.

8. Cardinals (10-4, No. 6): From one seed to possible wild card, in the course of six days.

9. Titans (9-5, No. 8): Thursday night’s game becomes critical to their desire to finally close the deal in the AFC South.

10. 49ers (8-6, No. 12): They’re the Colts of the NFC, the team no one will want to play in the postseason.

11. Bills (8-6, No. 13): It all comes down to Sunday at New England.

12. Bengals (8-6, No. 14): Up and down and up and down and up again.

13. Ravens (8-6, No. 9): Going for two has fueled the current three-game losing streak.

14. Chargers (8-6, No. 11): The future is bright. The present is murky.

15. Vikings (7-7, No. 16): At least it didn’t come down to the last play, again.

16. Dolphins (7-7, No. 17): The winning streak could get to seven. The last two games will determine whether they make it to the playoffs.

17. Browns (7-7, No. 15): It’s now or never for the Browns. With a trip to Lambeau Field on deck, the clock may be about to strike never.

18. Steelers (7-6-1, No. 19): That tie is going to either just get them in or just keep them out.

19. Eagles (7-7, No. 20): They’re good enough to get to the playoffs. Are they good enough to win if they get there?

20. Saints (7-7, No. 22): If only they could play the Bucs every week.

21. Broncos (7-7, No. 18): Will barely missing the playoffs save Vic Fangio?

22. Washington (6-8, No. 23): Time may have run out on what would have been an unlikely postseason berth.

23. Falcons (6-8, No. 21): They’re laying a good foundation for 2022. The question is whether their cap situation will allow them to build on it.

24. Raiders (7-7, No. 24): They still don’t look like a playoff team.

25. Seahawks (5-9, No. 25): The first non-winning record in a decade likely will spark some significant changes in Seattle. It remains to be seen what they will be, and how far they will reverberate.

26. Panthers (5-9, No. 26): The clock is ticking on Matt Rhule.

27. Giants (4-10, No. 27): There’s still time to bring back Eli.

28. Bears (4-10, No. 28): Like every other opponent, the Vikings let them hang around. Unlike every other opponent, the Bears couldn’t make Minnesota pay for it.

29. Lions (2-11-1, No. 30): Sunday’s win is that one great golf shot that gets a duffer to come back for another round.

30. Texans (3-11, No. 31): They’re the team that couldn’t tank straight.

31. Jets (3-11, No. 29): The Giants gave their season-ticket holders a free medium soda. The Jets are giving their season-ticket holders another mental wedgie.

32. Jaguars (2-12, No. 32): The first pick is in the bag. Will they screw it up?
