Meta stock spikes despite earnings miss, as Facebook hits 2 billion users for first time and sales guidance quells fears

Meta Platforms Inc. shares soared in after-hours trading Wednesday despite an earnings miss, as the Facebook parent company guided for potentially more revenue than Wall Street expected in the new year and promised more share repurchases amid cost cuts.

said it hauled in $32.17 billion in fourth-quarter revenue, down from $33.67 billion a year ago but stronger than expectations. Earnings were $4.65 billion, or $1.76 a share, compared with $10.3 billion, or $3.67 a share, last year.

Analysts polled by FactSet expected Meta to post fourth-quarter revenue of $31.55 billion on earnings of $2.26 a share, and the beat on sales coincided with a revenue forecast that also met or exceeded expectations. Facebook Chief Financial Officer Susan Li projected first-quarter sales of $26 billion to $28.5 billion, while analysts on average were projecting first-quarter sales of $27.2 billion.

Shares jumped more than 18% in after-hours trading immediately following the release of the results, after closing with a 2.8% gain at $153.12.

benefited from Meta’s results, with shares for each company rising 4% in extended trading Wednesday.

“Our community continues to grow and I’m pleased with the strong engagement across our apps. Facebook just reached the milestone of 2 billion daily actives,” Meta Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a statement announcing the results. “The progress we’re making on our AI discovery engine and Reels are major drivers of this. Beyond this, our management theme for 2023 is the ‘Year of Efficiency’ and we’re focused on becoming a stronger and more nimble organization.”

Facebook’s 2 billion-user milestone was slightly better than analysts expected for user growth on Meta’s core social network. Daily active users across all of Facebook’s apps neared, but did not crest, another round number, reaching 2.96 billion, up 5% from a year ago.

ad-tracking system in 2021 that punitively harmed Meta, costing it potentially billions of dollars in advertising sales. Meta has invested heavily in artificial-intelligence tools to rev up its ad-targeting systems and making better recommendations for users of its short-video product Reels, but it laid off thousands of workers after profit and revenue shrunk in recent quarters.

The cost cuts seemed to pay off Wednesday. While Facebook missed on its earnings, it noted that the costs of its layoffs and other restructuring totaled $4.2 billion and reduced the number by roughly $1.24 a share.

Meta executives said they now expect operating expenses to be $89 billion to $95 billion this year, down from previous guidance for $94 billion to $100 billion. Capital expenditures are expected to be $30 billion to $33 billion, down from previous guidance of $34 billion to $37 billion, as Meta cancels multiple data-center projects.

In a conference call with analysts late Wednesday, Zuckerberg called 2023 the “year of efficiency.”

“The reduced outlook reflects our updated plans for lower data-center construction spend in 2023 as we shift to a new data-center architecture that is more cost efficient and can support both AI and non-AI workloads,” Li said in her outlook commentary included in the release.

Meta expects to increase its spending on its own stock. The company’s board approved a $40 billion increase in its share-repurchase authorization; Meta spent nearly $28 billion on its own shares in 2022, and still had nearly $11 billion available for buybacks before that increase.

“Investors are cheering Meta’s plans to return more capital to shareholders despite worries over rising costs related to its metaverse spending,” said Jesse Cohen, senior analyst at Investing.com.

The results came a day after Snap Inc.

posted fourth-quarter revenue of $1.3 billion, flat from a year ago and the worst year-over-year sales growth Snap has ever reported. But they also arrived on the same day Facebook scored a major win in a California court. The company successfully fended off the Federal Trade Commission bid to win a preliminary injunction to block Meta’s planned acquisition of VR startup Within Unlimited.

DOJ Seeks to Ban Sam Bankman-Fried From Contacting FTX Employees

The Justice Department on Friday asked a federal judge to bar FTX founder

from communicating with current and former employees of the collapsed crypto exchange without a lawyer present after prosecutors alleged he recently contacted a potential witness in his criminal case.

Mr. Bankman-Fried, who faces federal charges related to the implosion of FTX, reached out to the general counsel of the company’s U.S. operation through an encrypted messaging application earlier this month, federal prosecutors said in a filing. Prosecutors said Mr. Bankman-Fried has also contacted other current and former FTX employees and are concerned that the communications could lead to witness tampering.

Prosecutors also requested the judge prohibit Mr. Bankman-Fried from communicating through encrypted messaging applications like Slack and Signal, saying that when he headed FTX he directed employees of the company and his crypto-investment firm Alameda Research to set their communications on these platforms to auto-delete after 30 days. That policy has impeded the government’s investigation, prosecutors said.

“Potential witnesses have described relevant and incriminating conversations with the defendant that took place on Slack and Signal that have already been autodeleted because of settings implemented at the defendant’s direction,” prosecutors said in the filing.

Lawyers for Mr. Bankman-Fried in a letter to the judge said the government was mischaracterizing innocuous conduct by their client in “an apparent effort to portray our client in the worst possible light.” They said the government’s request was overbroad and unnecessary, proposing instead that Mr. Bankman-Fried be prohibited from contacting certain limited witnesses, not all of FTX’s current and former employees.

FTX’s U.S. general counsel, Ryne Miller, couldn’t immediately be reached.

The Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office charged Mr. Bankman-Fried last month with stealing billions of dollars from FTX customers while misleading lenders and investors. He pleaded not guilty and is currently under court-ordered confinement in his parents’ Palo Alto, Calif., home while he awaits trial.

Mr. Bankman-Fried sent a Jan. 15 Signal message to the general counsel in which prosecutors allege he said he “would really love to reconnect and see if there’s a way for us to have a constructive relationship, use each other as resources when possible, or at least vet things with each other.”

Prosecutors didn’t identify the other employees that Mr. Bankman-Fried has allegedly tried to contact but called the communications to the general counsel and others troubling.

“Were the defendant to ‘vet’ his version of relevant events with potential witnesses, that might have the effect of discouraging witnesses from testifying in a manner contrary to the defendant’s narrative,” the Justice Department said in the filing.

Mr. Bankman-Fried’s lawyers said the message to Mr. Miller was more reasonably read as an attempt by Mr. Bankman-Fried to offer his assistance to FTX, not a “sinister attempt” to influence testimony at trial.

Dow to Cut 2,000 Jobs Globally

said it is laying off about 2,000 employees globally as job cuts that have so far been concentrated in the technology sector spread to other parts of the economy.

The Midland, Mich.-based chemicals company said it is targeting $1 billion in cost cuts this year as slowing economic growth and a drop-off in demand weigh on sales.

Dow said it is also shutting down certain assets and broadly looking to align spending with the macroeconomic environment. The company said it expects to book a charge of $550 million to $725 million in the first quarter for costs tied to the cost-cutting moves.

said the company is optimizing its cost structure amid macroeconomic uncertainties and “challenging energy markets, particularly in Europe.”

Shares of Dow rose less than 1% to close at $58.12 on Thursday.

Dow’s layoffs come after manufacturing conglomerate

said earlier this week that it was cutting 2,500 jobs globally, or about 2.6% of the company, as it confronts weakening demand.

The companies join a wave of technology companies that are cutting thousands of jobs as they recalibrate after growing rapidly at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic. On Wednesday,

International Business Machines Corp.

said it would cut 3,900 jobs, while software company

SAP SE

on Thursday said it would shed 3,000 positions.

Dow on Thursday also posted weaker-than-expected results for the fourth quarter. Revenue fell more than 17% to $11.86 billion, missing analysts’ estimates, with the company citing slowing economic growth around the world and destocking of inventory by customers.

The company’s fourth-quarter profit tumbled to 85 cents a share, down from $2.32 a share a year earlier. Adjusted earnings for the quarter missed estimates by a penny.

“While we see initial positive signs from moderating inflation in the U.S., improving outlook for energy in Europe, and reopening in China, we continue to be prudent and proactive,” Mr. Fitterling said.

Dow said it is targeting $500 million in structural improvements and another $500 million in operating cost reductions. The company said it would look to cut costs tied to purchasing raw materials, logistics and utilities.

The headline-grabbing expansion of layoffs beyond high-growth technology companies stands in contrast to historically low levels of jobless claims and news that companies such as

Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc.

are adding jobs.

This week, four companies trimmed more than 10,000 jobs, just a fraction of their total workforces. Still, the decisions mark a shift in sentiment inside executive suites, where many leaders have been holding on to workers after struggling to hire and retain them in recent years when the pandemic disrupted workplaces.

which announced larger layoffs this month, these companies haven’t expanded their workforces dramatically during the pandemic. Instead, the leaders of these global giants said they were shrinking to adjust to slowing growth, or responding to weaker demand for their products.

The U.S. labor market broadly remains strong but has gradually lost steam in recent months. Employers added 223,000 jobs in December, the smallest gain in two years. The Labor Department will release January employment data next week.

Economists from Capital Economics estimate a further slowdown to an increase of 150,000 jobs in January, which would push job growth below its 2019 monthly average, the year before pandemic began.

There is “mounting evidence of weakness below the surface,”

senior U.S. economist at Capital Economics wrote in a note to clients Thursday.

Last month, the unemployment rate was 3.5%, matching multidecade lows. Wage growth remained strong, but had cooled from earlier in 2022. The Federal Reserve, which has been raising interest rates to combat high inflation, is looking for signs of slower wage growth and easing demand for workers.

Many CEOs say companies are beginning to scrutinize hiring more closely.

Slower hiring has already lengthened the time it takes Americans to land a new job. In December, 826,000 unemployed workers had been out of a job for about 3½ to 6 months, up from 526,000 in April 2022, according to the Labor Department.

“Employers are hovering with their feet above the brake. They’re more cautious. They’re more precise in their hiring,” said

Jonas Prising,

chief executive of

ManpowerGroup Inc.,

a provider of temporary workers. “But they’ve not stopped hiring.”

Additional signs of a cooling economy emerged on Thursday when the Commerce Department said U.S. gross domestic product growth slowed to a 2.9% annual rate in the fourth quarter, down from a 3.2% annual rate in the third quarter.

Not all companies are in layoff mode.

Walmart Inc.,

the country’s biggest private employer, said this week it was raising its starting wages for hourly U.S. workers to $14 from $12, amid a still tight job market for front line workers. Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. said Thursday it plans to hire 15,000 new employees to work in its restaurants, while plane maker Airbus SE said it is recruiting over 13,000 new staffers this year. Airbus said 9,000 of the new jobs would be based in Europe with the rest spread among the U.S., China and elsewhere. 

General Electric Co.

, which slashed thousands of aerospace workers in 2020 and is currently laying off 2,000 workers from its wind turbine business, is hiring in other areas. “If you know any welders or machinists, send them my way,” Chief Executive

a Europe-headquartered energy-management and automation company, said the U.S. needs far more electricians to install electric-vehicle chargers and perform other tasks. “The shortage of electricians is very, very important for us,” she said.

Railroad CSX Corp. told investors on Wednesday that after sustained effort, it had reached its goal of about 7,000 train and engine employees around the beginning of the year, but plans to hire several hundred more people in those roles to serve as a cushion and to accommodate attrition that remains higher than the company would like.

Freeport-McMoRan Inc.

executives said Wednesday they expect U.S. labor shortages to continue to crimp production at the mining giant. The company has about 1,300 job openings in a U.S. workforce of about 10,000 to 12,000, and many of its domestic workers are new and need training and experience to match prior expertise, President

Kathleen Quirk

told analysts.

“We could have in 2022 produced more if we were fully staffed, and I believe that is the case again this year,” Ms. Quirk said.

The latest layoffs are modest relative to the size of these companies. For example, IBM’s plan to eliminate about 3,900 roles would amount to a 1.4% reduction in its head count of 280,000, according to its latest annual report.

The planned 3,000 job cuts at SAP affect about 2.5% of the business-software maker’s global workforce. Finance chief

Luka Mucic

said the job cuts would be spread across the company’s geographic footprint, with most of them happening outside its home base in Germany. “The purpose is to further focus on strategic growth areas,” Mr. Mucic said. The company employed around 111,015 people on average last year.

Chemicals giant Dow said on Thursday it was trimming about 2,000 employees. The Midland, Mich., company said it currently employs about 37,800 people. Executives said they were targeting $1 billion in cost cuts this year and shutting down some assets to align spending with the macroeconomic environment.

Manufacturer

3M Co.

, which had about 95,000 employees at the end of 2021, cited weakening consumer demand when it announced this week plans to eliminate 2,500 manufacturing jobs. The maker of Scotch tape, Post-it Notes and thousands of other industrial and consumer products said it expects lower sales and profit in 2023.

Across the corporate sphere, many of the layoffs happening now are still small relative to the size of the organizations, said

“I would qualify it more as a recalibration of the workforce than deep cuts,” Mr. Machuel said. “They are adjusting, but they are not cutting the muscle.”

3M to Cut Jobs as Demand for Its Products Weakens

said it is cutting 2,500 manufacturing jobs globally as the company confronts turbulence in overseas markets and weakening consumer demand.

The maker of Scotch tape, Post-it Notes and thousands of other industrial and consumer products said Tuesday that it expects lower sales and profit in 2023 after demand weakened significantly in late 2022, pulling down quarterly performance.

The St. Paul, Minn., company forecast sales this year to slip from last year’s level with weak demand for consumer products and electronic items, particularly smartphones, tablets and televisions, for which 3M provides components. Fourth-quarter sales for 3M’s consumer business dropped nearly 6% from the same period a year earlier.

“Consumers sharply cut discretionary spending and retailers adjusted their inventory levels,” 3M Chief Executive

said during a conference call. “We expect the demand trends we saw in December to extend through the first half of 2023.”

3M shares were down 5.2% at $116.25 Tuesday afternoon, while major U.S. stock indexes were little changed.

The company said demand for its disposable face masks is receding, as healthcare providers spend less on Covid-19 measures, and mask demand returns to prepandemic levels. 3M said it expects mask sales to decline between $450 million and $550 million this year from 2022.

3M executives said the spread of Covid infections in China is weighing on sales there, and sporadic plant closings are interrupting industrial production. China also is reducing production of consumer electronics because of weakening consumer demand, they said, and 3M’s exit from its business in Russia last year will also contribute to lower sales this year.

The 2,500 layoffs represent roughly 2.6% of the company’s workforce, which a regulatory filing said was about 95,000 at the end of 2021. Mr. Roman declined to specify where the job cuts will take place, or whether the company might make further reductions as it reviews its supply chains and prepares to spin off its healthcare unit.

“We’re looking at everything that we do as we manage through the challenges that we’re facing in the end markets and we focus on driving improvements,” he said.

The company said it would take a pretax restructuring charge in the first quarter of $75 million to $100 million.

Mr. Roman said the job cuts were unrelated to litigation facing the company. 3M is defending against allegations that the so-called forever chemicals it has produced for decades have contaminated soil and drinking water. It is also involved in litigation over foam earplugs its subsidiary Aearo Technologies LLC sold to the military. About 230,000 veterans have filed complaints in federal court alleging the earplugs failed to protect them from service-related hearing loss.

3M has said the earplugs were effective when military personnel were given sufficient training on how to use them. In litigation over firefighting foam that incorporated forms of forever chemicals, 3M is expected to argue that the products were produced to U.S. military specifications, granting the company legal protection as a government contractor.

In both cases, Mr. Roman said the company is focused on finding a way forward.

3M said the strong value of the U.S. dollar continues to erode sales from other countries when foreign currencies are converted to dollars.

The company forecast that sales for the quarter ending March 31 will be down 10% to 15% from the same period last year. For the full year, the company projects sales to fall between 6% and 2%, and expects adjusted earnings of $8.50 a share to $9 a share. The company earned $10.10 a share in 2022, excluding special charges, and analysts surveyed by FactSet were expecting the company to earn $10.22 in 2023.

For the fourth quarter, the company posted a profit of $541 million, or 98 cents a share, compared with $1.34 billion, or $2.31 a share, a year earlier.

Stripping out one-time items, including costs tied to exiting the company’s operations making forever chemicals, adjusted earnings came to $2.28 a share. Analysts were looking for adjusted earnings of $2.36 a share, according to FactSet.

Sales fell 6% to $8.08 billion for the quarter, slightly topping expectations of analysts surveyed by FactSet.

Mr. Roman said there were promising signs for some of 3M’s businesses, including in biopharma processing, home improvement and automotive electrification, the last of which he said grew 30% in 2022 to become a roughly $500 million business.

“There’s more to it than consumer electronics, but certainly the consumer-electronics dynamics are the story of the day,” he said.

Ukraine pledges sweeping personnel changes as allies jostle over tanks

KYIV, Jan 24 (Reuters) – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said personnel changes were being carried out at senior and lower levels, following the most high-profile graft allegations since Russia’s invasion that threaten to dampen Western enthusiasm for the Kyiv government.

Reports of a fresh scandal in Ukraine, which has a long history of shaky governance, come as European countries bicker over giving Kyiv German-made Leopard 2 tanks – the workhorse of armies across Europe that Ukraine says it needs to break through Russian lines and recapture territory.

“There are already personnel decisions – some today, some tomorrow – regarding officials at various levels in ministries and other central government structures, as well as in the regions and in law enforcement,” Zelenskiy said in his nightly video address on Monday.

Zelenskiy, who did not identify the officials to be replaced, said his plans included toughening oversight on travelling abroad for official assignments.

Several Ukrainian media outlets have reported that cabinet ministers and senior officials could be sacked imminently.

On Sunday, anti-corruption police said they had detained the deputy infrastructure minister on suspicion of receiving a $400,000 kickback over the import of generators last September, an allegation the minister denies.

A newspaper investigation accused the Defence Ministry of overpaying suppliers for soldiers’ food. The supplier has said it made a technical mistake and no money had changed hands.

David Arakhamia, head of Zelenskiy’s Servant of the People party, said officials should “focus on the war, help victims, cut bureaucracy and stop dubious business”.

“We’re definitely going to be jailing actively this spring. If the humane approach doesn’t work, we’ll do it in line with martial law,” he said.

‘SPRING WILL BE DECISIVE’

On the battlefront, front lines have been largely frozen in place for two months despite heavy losses on both sides.

Ukraine says Western tanks would give its ground troops the firepower to break Russian defensive lines and resume their advance. But Western allies have been unable to reach an agreement on arming Kyiv with tanks, wary of moves that could cause Moscow to escalate.

Berlin, which must approve Leopard re-exports, has said it is willing to act quickly if there is a consensus among allies.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, whose country borders Ukraine, said Warsaw would seek permission to send Leopard tanks to Kyiv and was trying to get others on board.

Germany is not blocking the re-export of Leopard tanks to Ukraine, the European Union’s top diplomat said on Monday.

American lawmakers have pressed their government to export M1 Abrams battle tanks to Ukraine, saying even a symbolic number would help push European allies to do the same.

Britain has said it will supply 14 Challenger 2 tanks. French President Emmanuel Macron said he did not rule out the possibility of sending Leclerc tanks.

Moscow sought to apply its own pressure.

“All countries which take part, directly or indirectly, in pumping weapons into Ukraine and in raising its technological level bear responsibility” for continuing the conflict, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said.

Ukraine and Russia are both believed to be planning spring offensives to break the deadlock in what has become a war of attrition in eastern and southern Ukraine.

“If the major Russian offensive planned for this time fails, it will be the ruin of Russia and Putin,” Vadym Skibitsky, deputy head of Ukraine’s military intelligence, said in an interview with news site Delfi.

One person was killed and two injured in Russian shelling of a residential district of the town of Chasiv Yar on Monday that damaged at least nine high-rise buildings, Pavlo Kyrylenko, governor of Donetsk region, said on Telegram.

“The Russians are deliberately terrorizing and killing the civilian population. And they will pay dearly for this,” he said.

Reuters could not independently verify battlefield reports.

‘ACTING AGAINST THE WEST’

In the 11 months since invading Ukraine, Russia has shifted its rhetoric on the war from an operation to “denazify” and “demilitarise” its neighbour to casting it as defence against an aggressive West. Kyiv and its Western allies call it an unprovoked act of aggression.

On Monday, the new general in charge of Russia’s military operations in Ukraine warned that modern Russia had never seen such “intensity of military hostilities”, forcing it to carry out offensive operations.

“Our country and its armed forces are today acting against the entire collective West,” Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov told the news website Argumenty i Fakty.

Military reforms, announced mid-January, could be adjusted to respond to threats to Russia’s security, which include Sweden and Finland’s aspirations to join NATO and “the use of Ukraine as a tool for waging a hybrid war against our country,” he said.

Ukraine imposed sanctions on 22 Russians associated with the Russian Orthodox Church for what President Zelenskiy said was their support of genocide under the cloak of religion.

How Apple Has So Far Avoided Layoffs: Lean Hiring, No Free Lunches

No company is certain to avoid significant cutbacks in an economic environment as volatile as the current one, and Apple isn’t immune to the business challenges that have hit other tech giants. It is expected next month to report its first quarterly sales decline in more than three years. Apple has also slowed hiring in some areas.

But the iPhone maker has been better positioned than many rivals to date in part because it added employees at a much slower clip than those companies during the pandemic. It also tends to run lean, with limited employee perks and businesses focused on hardware products and sales that have so far largely dodged the economic downturn, investors say.

An Apple spokesman declined to comment.

From its fiscal year-end in September 2019 to September 2022, Apple’s workforce grew by about 20% to approximately 164,000 full-time employees. Meanwhile, over roughly the same period, the employee count at Amazon doubled, Microsoft’s rose 53%, Google parent

Alphabet Inc.’s

increased 57% and Facebook owner Meta’s ballooned 94%.

Apple has about 65,000 retail employees working in more than 500 stores who make up roughly 40% of the company’s total workforce.

On Friday, Alphabet became the latest tech company to announce widespread layoffs, with a plan to eliminate roughly 12,000 jobs, the company’s largest-ever round of job cuts.

Alphabet’s cut follows a wave of large layoffs at Amazon, Microsoft and Meta. The tech industry has seen more than 200,000 layoffs since the start of 2022, according to Layoffs.fyi, a website that tracks cuts in the sector as they surface in media reports and company releases.

The last big round of layoffs at Apple happened way back in 1997, when co-founder

returned to the company, which then cut costs by firing 4,100 employees.

So far, Apple’s core business has shown itself to be resilient against broader downturns in the market. The other four tech giants have suffered amid slowdowns in digital advertising, e-commerce and PCs. In its September quarter, Apple reported that sales at its most important business—the iPhone—advanced 9.7% from the previous year to $42.6 billion, surpassing analyst estimates.

After a period of aggressive hiring to meet heightened demand for online services during the pandemic, tech companies are now laying off many of those workers. And tech bosses are saying “mea culpa” for the miscalculation. WSJ reporter Dana Mattioli joins host Zoe Thomas to talk through the shift and what it all means for the tech sector going forward.

Apple may face a rougher December quarter, which it is scheduled to report on Feb. 2, as the company encountered manufacturing challenges in China, where strict zero-Covid policies damped much economic activity. Many analysts expect that demand hasn’t subsided for its iPhones and as the company continues to ramp back up manufacturing, demand is anticipated to move to the March quarter.

The company’s business model hasn’t been totally immune to broader slowdowns. Revenue from its services business continued to slow, growing 5% annually to $19.2 billion in the September quarter, shy of the gains posted in recent quarters.

Tom Forte,

senior research analyst at investment bank D.A. Davidson & Co., said he expects Apple to reduce head count, but it might do that quietly through employee attrition—by not replacing workers who leave. The company could move in the direction of making other cuts or adjustments to perks that are common in Silicon Valley. Apple doesn’t offer free lunches to employees on its corporate campus, unlike other big tech companies such as Google and Meta.

Some of the tech giants cutting jobs have spent heavily on projects that are unlikely to turn into strong businesses anytime soon, said Daniel Morgan, a senior portfolio manager at Synovus Trust Co., which counts Apple among its largest holdings. “Both Meta and Google are terribly guilty of that,” he said.

After announcing the layoffs, Alphabet Chief Executive

Sundar Pichai

said the company had seen dramatic periods of growth during the past two years. “To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today,” he wrote in a message to employees on Friday.

Apple also is working on risky future bets, such as an augmented-reality headset due out later this year and a car project whose release date is uncertain, but at a more measured pace.
