Elon Musk says Twitter staff ‘error’ led to hiring Perkins Coie law firm

Jan 6 (Reuters) – Twitter Inc CEO Elon Musk said in an email to Reuters on Friday that hiring law firm Perkins Coie to defend the company in a California federal lawsuit this week was a mistake it would not make again.

Reuters reported earlier that lawyers from Perkins Coie entered court appearances for Twitter in the case on Wednesday even though Musk has denounced the firm on the social media platform, including in a tweet last month related to its past work for former Democratic U.S. presidential nominee Hillary Clinton.

Musk’s email said hiring Perkins Coie was “an error on the part of a member of the Twitter team.”

“Perkins will not be representing Twitter on future cases,” he said.

He did not immediately respond to follow-up questions on Friday, including whether Perkins Coie will stay on as counsel for Twitter in at least six other lawsuits predating Musk’s ownership. A Perkins Coie spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Musk’s finger-pointing follows months of internal tensions over Twitter’s legal staffing and priorities since he acquired the company for $44 billion and took over as CEO in October.

Musk has fired Vijaya Gadde, Twitter’s legal affairs and policy officer, and other senior employees as he seeks to undo what he has criticized as past censorship and partisan bias at the company.

Twitter has also shaken up its outside legal teams, with attorneys from Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan stepping in for other firms in several cases.

Musk tweeted on Dec. 8 that Twitter “isn’t using Perkins Coie” as outside counsel and urged other companies to boycott the firm. He singled out a former Perkins Coie lawyer, Michael Sussmann, who advised Clinton’s 2016 presidential campaign while at the firm.

Sussmann was acquitted in May after denying federal charges that he falsely told the FBI he was not working on Clinton’s behalf when he gave the agency purported evidence of cyber links between the Trump Organization and a Russia-based bank.

“No company should use them until they make amends for Sussmann’s attempt to corrupt a Presidential election,” Musk wrote in December, referring to Perkins Coie.

In May, Musk tweeted that Perkins Coie and another large law firm were made up of “white-shoe lawyers” who “thrive on corruption.”

The case that Perkins Coie signed on to for Twitter this week was brought last year by Laura Loomer, a far-right activist who was banned from the site in 2018.

The San Francisco lawsuit claims social media giants, corporations and the U.S. government conspired to “unlawfully censor conservative voices and interfere with American elections.” Twitter and its former CEO Jack Dorsey have denied the claims.

LSU vs. Arkansas score, takeaways: Harold Perkins Jr. stars as No. 7 Tigers escape Hogs in defensive battle

No. 7 LSU used a monster effort from freshman linebacker Harold Perkins Jr. to survive and advance 13-10 on the road against Arkansas on Saturday afternoon. Perkins took over the game with a program record four sacks in a single game, adding a batted pass and forced fumble on Arkansas quarterback Cade Fortin to clinch the game in the fourth quarter.

Perkins’ effort was part of an outstanding defensive effort from LSU, which held Arkansas to under 250 total yards and 3 yards per carry. Razorbacks starting quarterback KJ Jefferson missed the game with an injury, and backup Malik Hornsby was ultimately benched after a poor outing in his place. Fortin, the third-string signal caller, led Arkansas’ lone touchdown drive, but it wasn’t enough in a close victory for LSU.

Arkansas also had a strong day defensively, holding LSU QB Jayden Daniels to just 86 yards on 8 of 15 passing. The Hogs sacked Daniels seven times and forced both a fumble and an interception in the first quarter. However, LSU managed to pull off a controversial third-down conversion with a passing play — that looked identical to its game-winning 2-point conversion against Alabama — to run down most of the clock in the fourth quarter.

Fortin had one last drive to try and tie the game, throwing a pair of nice passes to start the drive. However, Perkins stepped up again and knocked the ball out of Fortin’s hands as he drew it back. The loose ball was recovered by the LSU defense, allowing the Tigers to run out the clock for a fourth straight victory.

With the win, LSU (8-2, 6-1 SEC) maintains control of the SEC West while eliminating Alabama from backdooring its way into the game. The Tigers can officially clinch a spot in the SEC Championship Game if No. 9 Bama beats No. 11 Ole Miss on Saturday afternoon. Otherwise, LSU just needs to pull off a win over struggling Texas A&M in the final week.

Stay tuned to CBS Sports for updates, highlights and takeaways from LSU at Arkansas.

Draymond Green’s defense of Steph Curry ‘weird,’ Kendrick Perkins says

Kendrick Perkins again is calling out Draymond Green. This time, however, it has nothing to do with the Warriors forward’s playing ability.

Instead, Perkins has taken offense to Green’s latest comments in defense of his teammate, Steph Curry.

During Monday’s episode of “The Draymond Green Show,” Green argued that Curry has yet to win an NBA Finals MVP trophy because he was double-teamed “seven times” more often than former teammate Kevin Durant during Golden State’s last two title runs.

“If you’re capable of analyzing a game, then under no circumstances are you going to say Steph Curry needs a Finals MVP to validate who he is,” Green said on his podcast.

Perkins, the 2008 NBA champion-turned-analyst, called Green’s comments “weird” during a long rant Tuesday on ESPN’s “NBA Today.”

“I’m confused, because nobody ever questioned Steph Curry’s greatness,” Perkins said. “So, for Draymond to say that is weird to me. Nobody ever said that [Curry] needed to win a Finals MVP to solidify his greatness. … They’ve been saying that a Finals MVP would enhance and put him in a different conversation, which it will.

“If you go down the line and give me your top 10 greatest players of all time, all of them have a Finals MVP. That’s all we say. In my opinion, I got Steph Curry as No. 12. For Draymond to create this narrative that everybody is saying this — Steph Curry, a generational talent, a guy that changed the game forever — is sitting up here saying that he needs a Finals MVP to put a stamp on his legacy? Nobody is saying that.”

Green’s comments didn’t just spur a reaction from Perkins, but from Durant as well, who said his former Oklahoma City Thunder teammate’s assessment of Curry coverage is “100% false” in a tweet. A back-and-forth between the two NBA stars ensued, ending with Durant telling Green, “I love the show.”

While Green and Durant’s disagreement appeared to end amicably, past beef between Perkins and the outspoken Golden State veteran could lead to a different outcome

“It’s crazy to me, because we just let this dude [Green] sit up here and call out people time and time again to get his approval,” Perkins continued.

If the past is any indication, Green surely will have a response to Perkins’ complaints.
