David Schoen defends lawyers’ meandering performance in impeachment trial

Seemingly everyone who had watched the Senate trial earlier in the day, including Trump, was left mystified by Castor’s opening remarks, which touched on topics as disparate as Ancient Greek democracy and the “extraordinary” gallantry of U.S. senators. Trump, in particular, was said to have found their performances disappointing, especially on the heels of House impeachment managers’ searing video montage of the Jan. 6 riots.

Even Hannity, a frequent ally of Trump who spent his Tuesday show disparaging the impeachment effort, complained about the defense team’s performance. He led his interview by asking about the lawyers’ verbose statements, only for Schoen to respond stone-faced about the merits of the impeachment in general.

Hannity had to push Schoen on the matter at the end of the interview, saying that “some conservatives called me and said, ‘Whoa, we need someone harder hitting here.’”

Referring to Castor and his law firm, Schoen responded: “There’s a lot to say, and I know they feel very strongly about fighting against what they are seeing.”

Razer’s new Viper 8K promises the fastest performance of any gaming mouse

Razer’s Viper 8K is a refresh of the 2019 true ambidextrous Viper. For the most part, it’s identical and is now available at the same $79 asking price, but it has some key upgrades for competitive gamers who are hoping that tech might help them get the edge over their opponents.

First off, Razer now includes the Focus Plus 20,000DPI sensor used in many of its other 2020 mice, along with the latest generation of optical switches that have a more tactile click feel, according to the company (although it didn’t stand out as noticeable to me when I tested the mouse). The biggest news is that, according to Razer, the newly revised Viper can achieve the fastest polling rate of any mouse currently available: up to 8,000Hz — far higher than the industry standard of 1,000Hz.

The polling rate measures how often per second the mouse tells your computer where it’s located on-screen. The more frequent the polling is, the smoother your mouse tracking can be. In the case of Razer’s new Viper 8K, an 8,000Hz polling rate can deliver a whopping 8,000 pings to your PC per second, while reducing the response time of those pings from one millisecond to just an eighth of one millisecond. On paper, it seems really impressive.

The Viper 8K’s Speedflex is slightly thicker, a change made to better accommodate the increased polling rate.

But why, exactly, would anyone need a polling rate this high? Razer says this is an upgrade that you won’t necessarily feel or notice right away since this improvement slices off mere fractions of a millisecond from the response time — something I’d wager most people couldn’t delineate. However, according to Razer, it could help your movement and aim feel more responsive, and gamers who play fast-paced games, like first-person shooters, are most likely to benefit from using this mouse — even if they don’t notice it happening.

Frankly, I didn’t notice a stark difference in gameplay while testing out Ghostrunner, a first-person title that relies on fast reflexes. (I failed a lot, but honestly, that’s nothing new.) I then tried to put Razer’s 8,000Hz polling rate claim to the test with some sites that track that metric. Tools made by Mouse Insider and Zowie recorded a 4,700Hz average polling rate for this mouse. There were a few times it peaked into 5,000Hz, so it seems like it could go higher if it were physically possible for me to move my hand any faster.

This is a picture of the original Viper. The new Viper 8K looks exactly the same.

Your PC hardware may also play a factor. Razer requested that press who were going to test the mouse have access to PCs with at least an Intel Core i5-8600K or AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor, an Nvidia GTX 1080 or AMD Radeon RX 5700 or better graphics processor, and a high refresh-rate monitor at 144Hz or over. Thankfully, you don’t actually need a PC that high-end to use this mouse. Razer’s Synapse software lets you revert the polling rate to 125, 500, 1,000, 2,000, or 4,000Hz. However, since the main objective of the Viper 8K is to make your experience smoother with its high polling rate, you’ll take better advantage of this mouse’s specs if you have at least a midrange system with a high refresh rate monitor and powerful hardware.

I expect other peripheral companies will launch similar mice with high polling rates, though if you feel your needs are being met with current tech, you probably don’t need to get too excited about this feature just yet. But if you need a new mouse, this isn’t a bad choice. I like using this mouse as much as I did the original Viper. And the fast polling rate tech won’t cost you anything extra to attain since the Viper 8K is the same price as its predecessor.

Celtics’ Jaylen Brown makes NBA history with big performance, gets a shout-out from Bill Russell

Getty Images

With Jayson Tatum sidelined due to COVID-19, the Boston Celtics had a tough week that included back-to-back losses to their Eastern Conference rivals, the Philadelphia 76ers. But on Sunday, they bounced back in a major way, beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 141-103 to get back in the win column.

They did so in large part thanks to Jaylen Brown, who continued his breakout season with a game-high 33 points on a highly efficient 13-of-20 from the field. It’s impressive any time you score that many points, but even more so when you do it in just 19 minutes.

With the Celtics in complete control pretty much right from the opening tip, head coach Brad Stevens took advantage of an opportunity to get his starters some extra rest, so Brown didn’t even check in for the fourth quarter. As a result, he set a new record for the most points scored in fewer than 20 minutes in an NBA game since the start of the shot clock era began back in 1954.

Brown, who also set a new personal best with his fourth straight game of at least 25 points, is now averaging career-highs in both scoring and assists, and is putting up 27.3 points, 5.8 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game on 53.2 percent shooting. He’s made huge strides in multiple aspects of his game, and his efforts are being recognized.

After Sunday’s game, he earned a shoutout from one of Boston’s all-time legends: Bill Russell. The 11-time champion took to Twitter — which he’s surprisingly active on for an 86 year old — to write, “Great playing tonight @FCHWPO keep it going.”

A win, a record and a message from a Hall of Famer. It doesn’t get better than that.

Jennifer Lopez hits the gym in Miami with a new souvenir after Biden inauguration performance

Jennifer Lopez heads straight back to the gym in Miami after performing at Biden’s inauguration… and shows off a sparkly souvenir from the event

Jennifer Lopez had the distinct honor of performing at President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday in Washington D.C.

On Thursday the 51-year-old megastar wasted no time to get back to her usual routine as she was seen hitting up the gym in Miami.

A new souvenir in hand to commemorate the monumental day in America, Lopez was seen walking with a rhinestone tumbler that read #Inauguration2021 as she flashed her enviable curves.

Back to the grind: Jennifer Lopez, 51, hits the gym in Miami with a sparkly new souvenir after stellar performance at Biden’s inauguration where she stunned in Chanel

A 360 from yesterday’s pristine white Chanel getup, Lopez sported black leggings and a white long sleeve shirt with a white sports bra underneath.

Ditching the glam for a more casual look, she tossed her hair up in a messy top knot and flexed a fresh pair of black sneakers.

Oversized sunglasses and a sparkly face mask, she added a touch of glitz to match her new go-to hydrating cup.

Patriotic performance: The megastar performed a medley of songs in DC on Wednesday, tossing in a line from her 2000 song Let’s Get Loud in addition to some more patriotic tunes

Lopez performed a medley of songs in D.C. as she belted, This Land Is Your Land and America the Beautiful, before casually tossing in a line from her 2000 hit song Let’s Get Loud.

An emotional JLo took the stage at the Capitol for her take on the patriotic ballads, even reciting the last line of America the Beautiful in Spanish, before surprising the crowd with the nod to her own song.

Twitter was quick to light up about the decision to slip it into the medley as it became one of the most talked about parts of the inauguration on social media next to the viral Bernie Sanders meme trend.

A diehard supporter of the Biden campaign alongside fiance Alex Rodriguez, the pair spoke with the now President about the importance of the Latino vote during an Instagram live in October.

Longtime supporter: JLo and A-Rod threw their support behind Biden from an early point, even chatting with the now President and wife Dr. Jill Biden on an Instagram live in October to discuss the Latino vote

Blinged out: Seen on most gym occasions with a jeweled tumbler that has her initials, Lopez has now upgraded to one with a Presidential seal of approval

After President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris were sworn in to office, Lopez was seen having many-a ‘swoon’ moments as she walked by them prior to her performance.

In addition to Lopez, other performers included Lady Gaga, Garth Brooks and 22-year-old poet Amanda Gorman who led the daytime festivities.

On Thursday a still shaken JLo posted a montage of footage from the inauguration set to parts of her medley as she wrote, ‘Unity is the path forward.’

Making her voice heard: For her medley of songs she stunned in  head to toe white Chanel, topping the look off with a white beret and soft billowy curls

Emotional: Walking to perform JLo was seen getting a bit choked up as she walked past President Biden and Vice President Harris

Rodriguez gushed that he was ‘so proud of Jen’ as the power couple posed for some incredible shots on the steps of the Capitol.

Once night fell on inauguration, Katy Perry, John Legend, Foo Fighters and Demi Lovato – to name a few – put on stellar performances as part of the Celebrating America special.

On Tuesday evening, Jennifer was seen posing with members of the military stationed around DC for a selfie as she wrote:

‘What an honor to spend a few moments with these brave men and women. Thank you for your service and sacrifice. I honor you today and everyday.’

Making history: Taking pause for a photo op on such a monumental day, she posed in Rodriguez’s arms ahead of her performance as she savored the incredible moment

Orlando Bloom is “one proud partner” after watching Katy Perry‘s Inauguration performance.

On the evening of Jan. 20, the singer performed her hit 2010 song “Firework” during the Celebrating America special, which was hosted by Tom Hanks. The Smile star, dressed in all white, sang the powerful ballad with fireworks shooting into the night sky.

After watching the performance, Bloom—who shares daughter Daisy Dove with the singer—took to Instagram to share his thoughts of the momentous experience.

“One day our little girl will grow up and see her mother play her part in a moment in history that we hope will heal, we hope will unite, we hope, we love,” he wrote in the caption. “One proud partner here with a tear of joy us.”

Katy and the Pirates of the Caribbean star welcomed their first child together, Daisy, back in August. Orlando also shares 10-year-old Flynn Christopher with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
