Netflix drops Meghan Markle’s animated series ‘Pearl’

By Maria Ponnezhath

(Reuters) – Streaming platform Netflix Inc said on Sunday it had decided to stop work on Meghan Markle’s family series “Pearl” as it reviewed animated content.

Dropping several projects, including Markle’s, was part of strategic decisions on production of animated series, the company said in a statement, without providing further details on its decision.

Archewell Productions, the company formed by Markle and her husband, Prince Harry, said last year that she would be an executive producer of “Pearl”. The series was to be centered on the adventures of a 12-year-old girl who is inspired by influential women from history.

The couple is formally known as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Archewell did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Netflix also decided not to move forward with the two animated children’s series “Dino Daycare” and “Boons and Curses.”

The decision to cancel these shows comes after Netflix reported a loss of 200,000 subscribers in the first quarter, falling well short of its forecast of adding 2.5 million.

Last year, Netflix extended a deal for animation films with Comcast subsidiary Universal Pictures, a move that was expected to help Netflix hold on to child viewers.

Netflix said on Sunday it would continue to work on projects with Archewell, including the previously announced documentary series “Heart of Invictus”. This will focus on athletes competing in the Invictus Games for injured veterans in The Hague in 2022.

Netflix did not respond to a query on whether it would cut more animated shows.

Members of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden form new band 3rd Secret, drop surprise album

A cohort of Seattle’s pre-2000 grunge icons – including Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic, Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil and Pearl Jam/Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron – have formed a new supergroup called 3rd Secret, and, without having announced it beforehand, dropped their debut album yesterday (April 11).

A self-titled affair, the 11-track effort sports a broad tonal palette – it leans heavily on classic grunge and alt-rock flavours, but adds diversity with hints of laidback folk and indie-rock, swampy blues and stomping hard-rock.

Tracks like ‘Dead Sea’ and ‘Winter Solstice’ make impressive use of twangy, melancholy acoustics, while the use of an accordion on ‘Right Stuff’ adds a unique sense of theatricality. ‘Diamond In The Cold’, on the other hand, is a crunchy, mosh-primed rock anthem, with songs like ‘I Choose Me’ and ‘Lies Fade Away’ embracing the epochal ‘90s grunge sound that 3rd Secret’s members built their legacies on.

Have a listen to the full album below:

Alongside Novoselic, Thayil and Cameron, 3rd Secret is rounded out by guitarist Jon ‘Bubba’ Dupree (best known for his work in ‘80s hardcore outfit Void, as well as the alt-metal supergroup Hater, which also featured Cameron) and singers Jillian Raye (who Novoselic also plays with as part of Giants In The Trees) and Jennifer Johnson.

Recording for the album was split between three sessions, all of which featured involvement from longtime Nirvana and Soundgarden collaborator Jack Endino. In addition to mixing the full release and engineering three tracks, Endino aided Nate Yaccino in recording five of the tracks, and Erik Friend in recording the other three.

Friend also performed synth on ‘Dead Sea’ and ‘Rhythm Of The Ride’, while Martin Link filled in for Cameron on the tracks ‘Live Without You’ and ‘Right Stuff’.

The album was released independently, and at the time of writing, is only available to buy digitally on Amazon and stream through Spotify and YouTube. It’ll be available to stream on Apple Music soon, 3rd Secret confirmed on their website, though they’re yet to share any details of a potential release on physical formats.

Novoselic first teased the existence of 3rd Secret back in February, sharing in a since-deleted tweet that he was “really busy trying to finish a record” and “in the middle of some hangups”. At the time, it was slated for release in mid-March.

Random: Twitch Streamer Encounters Double Shiny In Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl Starter Battle

Image: MitchOG

You might have seen a shiny encounter in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl but have you seen a double shiny encounter before?

Twitch streamer MitchOG was doing a shiny-only run in the newest Pokémon remakes and managed to get the encounter of a lifetime – a shiny starter Turtwig and shiny Starly in the same battle. The odds of a shiny encounter are one-in-4096 and a double encounter is a one-in-almost 17 million chance.

It reportedly took the streamer around three and a half hours and 107 resets to encounter his first shiny (which ended up being a double encounter). Being the first battle in the game though, unfortunately, he wasn’t able to catch the shiny Starly – but it’s still pretty neat.

Since Mitch’s double shiny encounter, Pokémon fans around the world have been telling the streamer to go out and buy a lottery ticket – the odds are certainly better. If you would like some help catching your own shiny, be sure to check out our detailed guide:

What do you think of this special double encounter? Leave a comment down below.

Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Remakes Claim 3rd In November NPD Chart

Image: Nintendo / The Pokémon Company

Though the increasing relevance of download eShop sales can take away from the lustre of physical retail charts, there’s still monthly interest in the NPD figures that show results for US stores. This is particularly the case in November, with Nintendo opting to show off its market leading hardware sales to emphasize its success in the Thanksgiving / Black Friday week.

In terms of software, there are also some other success stories for the Switch. First of all the notable arrival of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl saw the duo of releases claim third place for November, losing out to Call of Duty: Vanguard and Battlefield 2042. As shown by Mat Piscatella of NPD Group, the Pokémon releases also jumped straight into the year-to-date top 10, claiming 8th spot.

Though Shin Megami Tensei V only made its debut in 16th place, its results were a new high for the series (in terms of dollar sales).

As mentioned above, none of this includes download eShop sales in the US market, but does give a valuable insight into what consumers were buying in stores or as physical copies online. Overall, there were some positive results from a Switch perspective.

Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl has the largest first-week viewership on Twitch than any other Pokémon game

Saying Pokémon is a popular franchise underscores how big the series is, so knowing that Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl did well isn’t earth-shattering news. However, learning how well a Pokémon game does on streaming platforms, including Twitch, is still impressive.

Gamesight compiled the total hours viewed for all recent Pokémon games on Twitch during each games’ launch week, including Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, remakes of the fourth generation of Pokémon games known as Diamond and Pearl. According to the data Gamesight compiled, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl had 18.4 million hours watched in its first week.

Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl had one million more hours than Sword and Shield had on its launch week on Twitch. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl had an average of over 99 thousand viewers, peaked at 252 thousand viewers, and the games were streamed for over 388 thousand hours in its first week.

Pokémon games have increasingly become more and more popular to stream, with each major release making headways on all streaming platforms. It is still impressive how much better Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl did when compared to its recent predecessor, probably revealing the popularity of the fourth generation of Pokémon games.
