Earth’s inner core may have ‘paused’ its rotation and reversed, new study suggests

(NEXSTAR) – Deep in the center of the Earth is the inner core, which spans roughly 746 miles and is composed of primarily pure, solid iron, NASA explains. Though we’ve long believed – and research has shown – that the inner core rotates, a new study suggests it may have “paused” its spin and could even have reversed.

The liquid outer core that surrounds the inner core causes Earth’s magnetic field. According to NASA, as the molten iron and nickel in the outer core move, they create electrical currents that result in a magnetic field. The outer core also allows the inner core to spin on its own, Nature explains.

Though scientists can’t track the core directly, they can analyze seismic waves caused by earthquakes – and Cold War-era nuclear weapon tests – as they reach the core. That’s what study co-authors Yi Yang and Xiaodong Song, seismologists at Peking University in Beijing, did for their new research, which was published in the Nature Geoscience journal on Monday.

Based on their analysis of seismic waves caused by similar earthquakes dating back to the 1960s, Yang and Song said they found that the inner core’s rotation seems to have “paused” between 2009 and 2020 and could even be reversing “by a small amount.”

Sounds concerning, right? Don’t be alarmed – this likely isn’t the first time our inner core has come to a halt. Instead, they believe the change is “associated with a gradual turning-back of the inner core as part of an approximately seven-decade oscillation.”

According to Yang and Song, results from their study also suggest “another overturn or a slowdown of the rotation around the early 1970s.”

The seismologists said their findings – changes in how fast seismic waves traveled through the inner core – coincide “with changes in several other geophysical observations, especially the length of day and magnetic field,” which are both areas that are impacted by the inner core’s movement, research has shown.

While the changes are “valid,” what Yang and Song found may not be exactly what’s happening in the depths of our planet. John Vidale, a professor of earth sciences at the University of Southern California that wasn’t involved in the study, noted “several competing ideas” about the Earth’s core to The Wall Street Journal.

This includes theories that the inner core reverses its rotation more frequently than the 70 years Yang and Song determined and that it stopped rotating in the early 2000s.

“No matter which model you like, there’s some data that disagrees with it,” Vidale told The New York Times.

Vidale recently co-authored a study that showed the inner core changed its spin between 1969 and 1974, and that it seems to oscillate “a couple of kilometers every six years.”

Twins paused their Carlos Correa pursuit after deal with Giants evaporated

After his deal with San Francisco evaporated, Carlos Correa once again was in play for the Twins on Tuesday. But only ever so briefly.

Before agreeing to a stunning 12-year deal worth $315 million with the New York Mets early Wednesday morning, Correa once again became available to all suitors, including the Twins.

Following the San Francisco Giants’ postponement of Correa’s introductory news conference on Tuesday morning, agent Scott Boras contacted the Twins to see if they maintained an interest in the shortstop. Prior to Correa delivering them a “kick in the gut” when he chose the Giants on Dec. 13, the Twins had offered him a 10-year, $285 million deal.

When he called again on Tuesday, Boras informed the Twins they’d need to improve upon their original offer. Team sources said the Twins wouldn’t increase their bid, nor would they hold further discussions until they had a better understanding of the medical concerns that reportedly caused Correa’s deal with the Giants to fall apart.

With New York Mets owner Steve Cohen already showing interest, Boras quickly moved on from the Twins. Later that night, Correa agreed to his contract with the Mets.

Given how crestfallen the Twins were in the aftermath of Correa’s departure seven days earlier, their decision to not seriously engage Boras earlier this week represents quite the turn.

The Twins have been enamored with Correa since they signed him last March to a three-year deal worth $105.3 million, which the shortstop opted out of in November. From the outset, Correa impressed the Twins on the field and in the clubhouse. Not only did his physical skill set make them a better club by giving them a dynamic player at a key position, Correa made the Twins a more intelligent team, too.

As the rest of the team fell apart in August and September, Correa did his best to keep the Twins afloat. From Aug. 1 on, Correa produced a .900 OPS over 256 plate appearances. It was a strong finish to a campaign in which Correa batted .291/.366/.467 with 22 home runs and 64 RBIs. Overall, Correa was valued at 4.9 WAR.

While their best offer wound up $65 million short of San Francisco’s original winning bid, it was the highest ever made by the Twins, and one team officials think demonstrated their desire to retain Correa.

But just a week later, with presumably another shot at Correa, the Twins pressed pause.

They wanted to re-evaluate after an Associated Press report Tuesday said Correa’s introduction was postponed when “a medical concern arose” during his physical. The Giants issued a statement on Wednesday saying they’d had a “difference of opinion over the results of Carlos’ physical examination.”

As much as the Twins hoped to retain Correa, a team source said the club hadn’t had an opportunity to thoroughly examine him since his original physical in March. The only extended examination Correa received during the season was when he was thought to have broken his finger on May 5 after getting hit by a pitch in Baltimore.

No examination was made following a Sept. 20 contest in which Correa appeared to be injured following a hard slide into second base, according to a team source. Thrown out stealing, Correa lay on the ground for an extended period before ultimately getting up on his own and limping off the field. Correa remained in the game.

That night, he told reporters he was OK after having a brief scare with his surgically-repaired lower right leg.

“He just hit my plate,” Correa said, referring to the hardware in his leg. “I had surgery and he hit it. Just kind of felt numb. Vibrating. So I was just waiting for it to calm down. It was a little scary, but when I moved I knew I was good.”

Correa appeared in 12 of the team’s next 13 games and continued to hit, batting .319/.373/.468.

While the Twins medically cleared Correa for a three-year deal in March, the team would have needed a new physical to clear the way for a 10-year deal. Perhaps concerns about Correa’s ankle in the aftermath of the Giants’ failed deal gave the Twins a reason to slow down their pursuit.

Not that they had long.

During their negotiating period Tuesday, Cohen increased his original offer of 12 years, $288 million by $27 million.

And just like that, the Twins missed out on Correa a second time.

CarMax results hit by ‘used-vehicle recession’; buyback paused

Dec 22 (Reuters) – Used-car retailer CarMax Inc (KMX.N) said on Thursday it was pausing some hiring, halting share buybacks and cutting expenses after reporting an 86% drop in third-quarter profit as the industry struggles to offload inventory amid waning demand.

The company’s shares fell as much as 12% to $52.10 and were at more than a two-and-a-half year low, dragging other auto retailers down with it.

The used-car industry, which minted money during the pandemic, is now struggling to sell cars at or above the prices it bought them as consistent rate hikes and decades-high inflation take a toll on demand.

“CarMax is battling a used-vehicle recession,” Evercore ISI analyst Michael Montani said, adding that pressure on wholesale sales intensified from the second quarter.

In response to challenging industry conditions, CarMax said it slowed car buying in the third quarter and cut marketing and capital expenditures.

CarMax is also lowering its staffing “from an attrition basis” and paused hiring in its corporate office to cut costs, Chief Financial Officer Enrique Mayor-Mora said during an investor call, adding that some actions may carry into the next year.

The company also halted share buybacks, CarMax said but added it remains committed to returning capital back to shareholders over time.

“Given third-quarter performance and continued market uncertainties, we are taking a conservative approach to our capital structure,” CarMax said.

CarMax reported retail and wholesale used-vehicle unit sales were 298,807 in the quarter through November, down 28% from a year earlier. It also bought about 40% fewer vehicles in the third quarter.

The company reported net income of 24 cents per share, compared with estimates of 70 cents, according to Refinitiv data.

CarMax’s revenue fell about 24% to $6.51 billion, below estimates of $7.29 billion.

Shares of other car retailers such as AutoNation Inc (AN.N) and Carvana Co (CVNA.N) were down between 1% and 2%.

Before dramatic Buffalo Bills victory, game was paused due to fans throwing snowballs onto field

CNN
 —

The Buffalo Bills claimed victory in a last-second 32-29 win over the Miami Dolphins Saturday night, a dramatic win after the game was briefly paused due to fans throwing snowballs onto the field.

During the pause at Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium, officials announced that if anyone on the field is hit with a snowball, a 15-yard penalty would be assessed against the Bills, according to the NFL Network broadcast.

Announcers on the broadcast mentioned that iceballs were being tossed at the Dolphins’ bench, with Miami head coach Mike McDaniel having a discussion with referees about it.

Highmark Stadium, citing public safety concerns, said anyone caught throwing snowballs, would be “ejected and subject to arrest.” CNN has reached out to the National Football League and the Bills for comment.

The Buffalo area received snow before the game, and while the field was cleared of snow, the stands were not.

After the Bills scored their first touchdown, Buffalo fans and players celebrated by throwing snowballs. But it did not stop after that, and fans threw snowballs as Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill tried to make a catch in the endzone.

After the announcement, as the Bills scored a touchdown before halftime, fans celebrated by throwing more snowballs.

In the fourth quarter, more snow began falling as Bills quarterback Josh Allen led his team on two scoring drives, including helping set up a game-winning field goal from kicker Tyler Bass. Buffalo players were seen using their hands to clear snow off the field for their kicker.

Following the victory, which earned the Bills their fourth consecutive playoff berth, the team celebrated on the snow-blanketed field.

Elon Musk’s paid Twitter verification paused after fake accounts spread

Comment

Twitter paused allowing people to sign up for its paid subscription feature that grants blue check marks amid a flood of fake accounts, just days after it launched the controversial feature.

A note to Twitter employees sent Thursday night said it was decided to temporarily disable sign-ups for Twitter Blue, its new $7.99 offering that allows accounts to receive a blue check mark. The pause was intended to “help address impersonation issues,” according to the note, which was viewed by The Washington Post.

A number of new accounts sporting a blue check mark surfaced this week impersonating politicians, celebrities and brands — including President Biden — after the new program launched on Wednesday. It’s part of Elon Musk‘s plan to create more streams of revenue following his $44 billion acquisition of the site two weeks ago.

Twitter’s content moderation chief quits

A fake account purporting to be basketball star LeBron James falsely tweeted that the athlete was requesting a trade. Another fake account with a blue check mark pretending to be former president George W. Bush tweeted “I miss killing Iraqis.”

And a fake account pretending to be pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly gained 1,500 retweets and more than 10,000 likes and remained online after three hours Thursday afternoon. An Eli Lilly spokesperson told The Post on Thursday they “are in communication with Twitter to address the issue.”

Twitter appears to be playing whack-a-mole with the fake accounts — some had been suspended by Friday, but many remained online. The company’s rollout of new features in its subscription Twitter Blue product has been rocky, and by Thursday night many people reported that the option to subscribe to Blue had disappeared from their apps.

Twitter didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Twitter’s paid verification service is here. What you need to know.

The decision to pause a signature new product under Musk marks two weeks of chaos under the new owner, the world’s richest man who is also a Twitter super user. Musk, who already counts himself as CEO of companies including Tesla and SpaceX, has moved quickly to implement changes and has had to backtrack multiple times in recent days.

Last week, he laid off roughly half of Twitter’s 7,500 staff members, raising concerns about the company’s ability to police misinformation and other harmful content on the site. Over the weekend, the company tried to hire some of them back.

Civil rights groups called on advertisers to suspend their campaigns on Twitter, and many have. And a string of executives have left the company — perhaps most notably, the company’s head of content moderation, who participated in a Twitter Spaces public meeting with Musk and advertisers on Wednesday.

Advertisers fleeing, workers in fear: Welcome to Elon Musk’s Twitter

Musk also ordered staffers to return to the office, reversing a policy at the tech company that all workers could remain remote — and making more departures likely.

Twitter Blue is Musk’s first major product change: an overhaul of Twitter’s verification system — opening up the process to attaining a blue check mark badge to users who were willing to pay. The initial rollout was dialed back as Musk expressed concern over its design.

These type of fast rollouts of products were particularly concerning to privacy staffers, some of whom quit Thursday. They said they needed full security reviews required under an order Twitter entered with the Federal Trade Commission earlier this year, following allegations that the company deceptively used phone numbers and other personal information for advertising purposes.

Still, overnight, Musk tweeted that the site hit an all-time high of active users on Thursday.

Musk took issue with account impersonations last weekend, when many people changed their name online to pretend to be the billionaire. By Thursday, he had tweeted a link to updated Twitter rules and said that “accounts engaged in parody must include ‘parody’ in their name, not just in bio.”

While Twitter Blue is being paused, existing users will still have access to the subscription features, the internal Twitter note said.

In one example of abuse, an account with a blue check mark badge pretending to belong to Arizona gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake tweeted victory on Thursday, claiming “I have WON. I decided it so it is truth.”

But the account, with the handle @TheRealKariLake, is not the candidate’s official account. And the race for Arizona’s next governor remains too early to be called — Lake, the Republican candidate, is locked in a close race with Democrat Katie Hobbs.

Users can click on a blue check mark and learn whether an account paid to be verified or was part of Twitter’s legacy program, but it’s otherwise difficult to distinguish. (The Post also found that there appeared to be a bug in the pop-ups that describe the blue check marks — sometimes showing accounts as “notable” when they were instead paid.)

There appear to be other bugs with paid verification — the fake Lake account was showing up with a blue check mark for some users, but not others.

We got Twitter ‘verified’ in minutes posing as a comedian and a senator

The fake accounts for James, Bush and Eli Lilly were suspended. But impersonation accounts with blue check marks for other companies and prominent figures remained online Friday morning.

In addition, the company said in its internal note that it would add a gray “Official” label to advertisers’ accounts.

Earlier this week, the company appeared to be rolling out that second label to indicate if accounts are official, but quickly rolled it back.

Musk tweeted on Wednesday he had “killed it,” and a Twitter executive clarified later that the company was focusing on using the badges for “government and commercial entities” instead of individuals.

“Apart from it being an aesthetic nightmare when looking at the Twitter feed it is simply another way of creating a two-class system,” Musk said during the Twitter Spaces on Wednesday. “It wasn’t addressing the core problem of there are too many entities that would be considered official or have legacy blue check marks.”

Even real, official accounts took note of the chaos on Twitter Friday. Washington state’s official account for the department of natural resources tweeted, “Update: The Twitter wildfire is at 44 billion acres and 0% contained.”

Drew Harwell contributed to this report.

King Charles visits Wales, miles-long line to see queen lying in state paused

  • King Charles visits Wales, last stop of UK tour
  • King and siblings to stand vigil on Friday night
  • Police mount huge security operation ahead of funeral

LONDON, Sept 16 (Reuters) – As tens of thousands of people poured into London ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s state funeral on Monday, the miles-long queue of mourners waiting to see her lying in state was temporarily closed on Friday after it swelled to capacity.

People of all ages and from all walks of life have paid their respects to the late queen, joining a well-organised line that stretches along the south bank of the Thames then over the river to parliament’s Westminster Hall.

But by mid-morning, the line was just too big – a testimony to the public’s respect and affection for the queen, who died in Scotland on Sept. 8 at the age of 96 after a 70-year reign.

“Entry will be paused for at least 6 hours,” Britain’s culture department said shortly before 10 a.m. (0900 GMT) “Please do not attempt to join the queue until it re-opens.”

It warned of waiting times of up to 12 hours. Some 750,000 people in total are expected to file past the queen’s coffin.

On Friday night, King Charles, who was visiting Wales on Friday, and his sister Princess Anne and brothers Princes Andrew and Edward will keep a silent vigil around the coffin, joining the ceremonial guard for a 15-minute period.

“I’ve no sensation in my knees at all or my legs,” said Hyacinth Appah, a mourner from London who was in the queue.

“But it’s been fine. Most of the people have been lovely and we’ve had quite a nice time.”

Another mourner from London, Naomi Brown, said she waited for nearly 11 hours after joining the queue on Thursday night after work.

“I just thought, I’m never going to do it again. I have so much respect for the queen, not once did she ever falter,” 29-year-old Brown said, speaking to Reuters as she neared the front of the queue.

“She has been such a good symbol for our country. It feels like we have lost a family member.”

The coffin stands in the ancient Westminster Hall on a purple-clad catafalque, draped in the Royal Standard and with the bejewelled Imperial State Crown placed on top.

Soldiers in ceremonial uniform and other officials are keeping vigil around it as people walk past to pay homage after their long wait. Many have been in tears, and others have saluted or bowed their heads.

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, in London for the funeral, was among those who visited Westminster Hall on Friday, stopping to curtsy as she filed past the coffin.

London’s police force said the state funeral would be the biggest security operation it had ever undertaken as prime ministers, presidents and royals come together to pay their respects.

The force was preparing for events ranging from terrorism threats to protests and crowd crushes, senior police official Stuart Cundy told reporters.

U.S. President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are among the guests from overseas who have confirmed they will be attending.

VISIT TO WALES

King Charles, who acceded to the throne on his mother’s death, meanwhile was visiting Wales, the last stage of a tour of the United Kingdom to acknowledge his status as the new monarch and head of state and to greet the public.

Charles and his wife Camilla, the Queen Consort, attended a service at Cardiff’s Llandaff Cathedral service then talked with cheering well-wishers outside.

Wales has a particular significance for the new king, who for five decades preceding last week’s accession had the title Prince of Wales.

Speaking at the Welsh parliament, Charles said: “Through all the years of her reign, the land of Wales could not have been closer to my mother’s heart. I know she took immense pride in your many great achievements – even as she also felt with you deeply in time of sorrow.”

“I am resolved to honour that selfless example,” he said, speaking in Welsh and English.

“I take up my new duties with immense gratitude for the privilege of having been able to serve as Prince of Wales. That ancient title … I now pass to my son William.”

There were a few anti-monarchy protesters outside Cardiff Castle, where Charles met Welsh First Minster Mark Drakeford.

One man held a banner saying “Cancel Royals” and a placard saying “End Prince of Wales Title”. Another man held a sign saying: “No to Monarchy, No to Charles, Great Reset”. Another read: “Not My King”.

Similar small protests have been held outside parliament and in Edinburgh over the past days, although King Charles has enjoyed a surge in support since he succeeded Elizabeth. read more

SILENT SKIES

The new Prince of Wales, William, and his brother Prince Harry and the queen’s six other grandchildren will stand vigil at the coffin on Saturday evening, a royal spokesman said.

In an adjustment to protocol, both Harry and his uncle Prince Andrew will be allowed to wear military uniform when they take their turns at vigil, royal officials said. Andrew will perform the duty with his siblings on Friday evening.

Both are war veterans, Andrew having served as a Royal navy helicopter pilot in the Falklands War and Harry serving two tours of duty with the British Army in Afghanistan.

But so far they have appeared in processions in morning suits as they lost their honorary military titles when they stepped back from public royal duties.

The state funeral is likely to be one of the grandest ceremonies ever seen in the British capital, involving thousands of military personnel.

Earl Marshal, Edward Fitzalan-Howard, the Duke of Norfolk, who is in charge of state occasions, said he hope the funeral “will unite people across the globe”.

London’s Heathrow Airport has said it will cancel 15% of its flight schedule on Monday to reduce noise over the city and guarantee that the skies will be quiet during a two-minute silence at the end of the funeral. read more

Monday has been declared a national holiday. Many shops will be closed and a range of other economic activities will grind to a halt. Thousands of people face cancelled doctor appointments or operations under the state health service.
