American tourists splurge in Paris boutiques as euro slides

PARIS, July 15 (Reuters) – American tourist Shawna Wilson says she has splashed out on four dresses at the high-end LVMH-owned department store La Samaritaine in Paris, tempted by the prices as the euro reached parity with the U.S. dollar.

The euro tumbled below $1 on Wednesday for the first time in two decades on fears that rising energy prices triggered by the Ukraine conflict could tip the European Union into a prolonged economic crisis. read more

“It’s like it’s on sale here,” said Wilson, 49, from Colorado, whose purchases included two dresses for her daughter. “Because the euro and the dollar are about the same, it definitely encourages us to spend.”

The weak euro is big draw for tourists, particularly Americans – who are flagged as a key growth driver for the European luxury goods sector in the second quarter, according to analysts from Barclays.

The strong dollar versus the euro contributed to a four-fold rise in tourism spending in Europe in June compared with last year, with an acceleration in spending from Americans, analysts at UBS, citing data from VAT refund provider Planet, said.

The luxury sector has rebounded quickly from the pandemic as people rushed to spend money saved during lockdowns — buying themselves treats as socialising resumed.

But sales in China, the world’s largest luxury goods market, have plunged this year as a new wave of strict COVID-19 lockdowns shuttered shops, crimped demand and also meant fewer high-spending Chinese tourists in Europe. read more

So as Americans fill up transatlantic flights, their eagerness to cash in on the weak euro is helping to replace business lost as a result of the lack of Chinese visitors, who were the main source of luxury sales growth in Europe pre-pandemic.

Luxury goods companies Richemont (CFR.S) and Burberry on Friday reported higher sales in Europe, which helped to offset a drop of more than 30% in China. read more

France has benefited most from the tourists’ splurge.

Sales to tourists in France in June climbed to just 11.3% below 2019 levels, a positive sign for French luxury labels that have a big exposure to their home market, UBS analysts said.

American tourists were thronging Paris’s Avenue Montaigne this week, browsing in the luxury boutiques, which include designer names such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Gucci.

Cheryl Penn, 70, a realtor from Delray Beach, Florida, had already bought herself a skirt and stocked up on baby clothes for her granddaughter.

“We just got on the Avenue, so we just started our shopping spree,” said Penn.

“I like that the euro and the dollar are equal so I know exactly what I’m spending,” she said.

Jennifer Groner, a TikTok influencer, went on a shopping spree in Paris in April when the euro was under pressure versus the dollar.

“I’ve never seen anything like this in terms of the price savings,” she told Reuters, estimating that she snapped up a Birkin bag from Hermes in Paris for $4,000 less than it would have cost her in the United States, paying little over $9,000, thanks also to a VAT refund.

“You’re able to travel to Europe, take in the culture but at the same time buy a bag,” said Groner, who also bought handbags and accessories from Prada, Dior, Louis Vuitton and Chanel, for overall savings of $8,000 compared with U.S. prices, based on her calculations.

Monika Arora, founder of pursebop.com, a news and information website for luxury brands, said she believes the brands will eventually “harmonise” prices.

“They’ve done that many times before,” she said.

Chanel told Reuters in May it could implement further price increases in July to account for currency fluctuations – particularly the weakness of the euro – and inflation. read more

The pull of Paris remains strong for American shoppers even though New York’s high end shopping streets teem with luxury European designer brands.

“So many of my friends more than ever are taking little weekend trips to Paris and other places and they are shopping while they are there — because that’s what you do while you’re in Paris,” said Jennifer Tumpowski, outside Gucci’s flagship store on New York’s Fifth Avenue.

Victor Wembanyama, No. 1 NBA draft prospect in 2023, changing teams in France, sources say

The most coveted NBA draft prospect in the world is on the move.

Victor Wembanyama, ranked No. 1 in the 2023 ESPN mock draft, has opted out of his contract with ASVEL Villeurbanne and is signing a two-year contract with Boulogne-Levallois Metropolitans 92 from Paris, a source told ESPN.

The 7-foot-3 18-year old with a 7-9 wingspan and 9-7 standing reach has wowed NBA executives for the better part of three years with his exceptional combination of fluidity, perimeter skill, shot-blocking instincts and feel for the game, cementing himself as the likely No. 1 pick, barring a major surprise. He was named French LNB Pro A Best Young Player two years in a row.

Teams and leagues around the globe pursued Wembanyama, including G League Ignite, the Australian NBL, Real Madrid, Barcelona, Paris Basket and many others.

Wembanyama will be coached by longtime French national team head coach Vincent Collet, who has been at the helm of the Tokyo Olympic silver medalists since 2009. Collet has won several titles domestically in France as well, being named Coach of the Year in France on five separate occasions, including most recently this season.

Collet coached then-19-year-old Nicolas Batum in Le Mans before he entered the NBA draft in 2008, giving him an opportunity to showcase himself in the Euroleague despite his youth. He’s well-regarded for his player-development ability and willingness to showcase young players, and that skill played a major role in Wembanyama’s decision.

Wembanyama had an opt-out clause in his contract with ASVEL that needed to be executed by Wednesday, which he ultimately did after the team ended its playoff run with a championship in a five-game series over Monaco.

Wembanyama played 33 of 76 possible games this season in the Euroleague and France, dealing with several minor injuries that played a role in his departure. He averaged 9.4 points, 5.1 rebounds and 1.8 blocks in 18 minutes per game in Pro A France, shooting 61% from 2-point range and converting 70% of his free throw attempts.

Salah Abdeslam, attacker in 2015 Paris terrorism rampage, convicted

Placeholder while article actions load

The lone surviving member of a group that carried out a 2015 rampage across Paris was found guilty Wednesday of all charges, including murder and terrorism, and sentenced to life in prison, bringing the biggest criminal trial in modern French history to an end.

The court found that Salah Abdeslam played a key role among the men who deployed explosives and assault rifles as they targeted the Bataclan concert venue, a national stadium, and several restaurants and cafes on the night of Nov. 13, 2015, killing 130 people and injuring hundreds. The Islamic State later claimed responsibility for the bloodshed, France’s worst terrorist attacks since World War II.

While public attention during the 10-month trial focused on Abdeslam, a Belgian-born French citizen, 19 other suspected perpetrators and accomplices also were charged. Five are presumed dead, and one is imprisoned in Turkey.

Nineteen of the 20 defendants were found guilty of all charges on Wednesday, with punishments ranging from suspended sentences to life in prison.

The court sentenced the 32-year-old Abdeslam to the harshest form of a life-in-prison sentence under French law, an extremely rare punishment that will make parole almost impossible. It was not immediately clear whether he would appeal.

Lawyers representing the victims welcomed the severity of the court’s ruling. “Salah Abdeslam’s sentence is symbolic and extremely rare, because it sanctions extremely serious events,” lawyer Gérard Chemla told reporters.

Prosecutors contended that Abdeslam only abandoned his plans to kill bystanders after his explosive vest malfunctioned. In court, he disputed the accusation, saying he’d joined the commando plot in its final stages of planning after his brother recruited him but backtracked from using his explosive vest because he saw himself reflected in the people sitting at a cafe. He recalled “a moment of doubt” before he would have blown himself up.

Abdeslam was previously found guilty of attempted murder and sentenced to 20 years in prison by a Belgian court, in a separate trial that focused on his shootout with police as they sought to apprehend the fugitive in the months after the Paris attacks.

The French trial was unprecedented in scale and highly symbolic. Victims were invited to take part as civil parties, and the more than 2,500 plaintiffs were represented by hundreds of lawyers. Authorities built a customized courtroom to allow hundreds of survivors and victims’ relatives to follow the proceedings in person or through video link from overflow rooms. Psychologists were available on-site and via a hotline.

Outside the courthouse on the Île de la Cité in the center of Paris, hundreds of police officers set up barricades and cordoned off large stretches of the island whenever the defendants were in attendance.

Over the 10 months, the court heard from experts, officials including former president François Hollande, survivors and witnesses. While the proceedings were videotaped, access to the footage was restricted — with no plans for it to be shown on television.

Sharon Weill, a law professor at the American University of Paris who focuses on terrorism trials, said the proceedings aimed to establish criminal responsibility but also give victims a space “to speak about their suffering.”

Still, much remains unknown. Investigators struggled to shed light on key details of the planning and execution of the attacks, and some defendants refused to respond to detailed questions.

But Weill said the constant courtroom presence of victims or their relatives, who at times directly engaged with the suspects, generated “strong exchanges.”

Abdeslam had refused to answer questions in the Belgian trial, and he appeared to take a combative stance when the Paris trial got underway in September. Asked about his profession, he said he had abandoned all other work “to become a fighter of the Islamic State.”

During testimony, he showed little remorse. “I support the Islamic State. I am in favor of them. I love them,” Abdeslam said months into the proceedings, blaming “the aggression of France and the West” for the Paris rampage.

Victims and their representatives described his remarks as “additional stab wounds” and as “hate speech.”

Yet this spring, Abdeslam appeared to have changed his tone, several times offering “apologies” and “condolences” to the victims in tearful comments in court.

Paris attacker Salah Abdeslam sentenced to life in prison without parole

The attacks, which ISIS claimed responsibility for, left 130 people dead and 494 wounded across the French capital — in bars, restaurants, at a concert hall and outside the famed Stade de France, where a soccer match was taking place.

Abdeslam, 32, was found guilty of all five counts he was charged with. He is just the fifth person in France sentenced to life without parole since it was legalized in 1994.

Though Abdeslam was one of 20 people on trial, he was the sole defendant accused of physically carrying out the deadliest attacks that France has ever seen in peacetime.

The other suspects were charged with lesser crimes, such as helping to provide the attackers with weapons or cars. Six were tried in absentia.

Of the accused, 19 were found guilty on all counts, while one — Farid Kharkhach — was convicted of a lesser charge than he initially faced. The other 13 defendants in the courtroom received prison terms ranging from 2 years to 30 years for their crimes.

Abdeslam didn’t appear to react to his sentence. Kharkhach, who received the lightest sentence, cried after hearing his verdict.

The verdicts are a culmination of a lengthy trial which began on September 8, 2021 and involved more than 330 lawyers and approximately 1,800 civil parties, according to the French Justice Ministry. The proceedings took place in a purpose-built courtroom inside the the Palais de Justice in central Paris.

The trial heard testimony from first responders who described the horrors they witnessed at the Bataclan concert hall and at bars and restaurants across the city. Survivors spoke of their desperation as they tried to hide from the terrorists, and family members of those killed recalled how their anxiety turned to sorrow as they learned of the death of their loved ones.
Abdeslam, who was arrested in 2016, spoke publicly for the first time early in the trial, defiantly declaring himself “an Islamic State soldier,” upsetting some survivors who took his words as a threat.
Abdeslam later apologized to the victims and claimed to have killed no one.

He says he chose not to detonate his explosive vest, and on the final day of hearings in the case urged the court not to give him a harsh sentence: “I made mistakes, it’s true, but I’m not a murderer, I’m not a killer,” he said.

Many of the survivors and the families of those who died are hoping to move on with their lives following the lengthy court case.

Life for Paris, the main organization for survivors and victims’ families announced on Tuesday that the organization will begin to wind down, eventually closing on November 13, 2025, the ten-year anniversary of the attacks.

“(The dissolution) is also for us to return to a certain form of normalcy, at our own free will, far from public attention,” the group said in a statement.

Watch Paris Hilton Get Ready for a Date Night With “Tom Cruise” in Deepfake Video

Fans certainly didn’t just cruise past this video on their FYPs.

Paris Hilton had plenty of TikTok users fooled when she posted a video on June 14 of her and what appeared to be Tom Cruise getting ready for a night out at his Top Gun movie premiere.

In her video, a man who strikes an uncanny resemblance to Tom walks out of the closet while putting on his blazer to tell Paris, “I don’t want to be late to this premiere.”

The This is Paris podcast host then appears in a sparkling gown, telling her date, “We should always run fashionably late—it’s your night.”

And after exchanging a few compliments, the pair embraced in front of the mirror to admire their red carpet looks.

“Do you think people are really gonna believe that we’re a couple?” Paris asked, to which “Tom” quipped, “I think most people will believe anything.”

Paris Hilton Through the Years

And most people did! The TikTok video sent the Internet into a frenzy. One user commented, “I’m so confused, but invested.”

Meanwhile, another user started to catch on, writing, “Wait is this the real Tom Cruise or the computer generated one?”

Paris eventually cleared the air by commenting that she was “Sliving it up with @deeptomcruise”—which is the TikTok account for impersonator Miles Fischer. The content creator is known to use deepfake technology to digitally place Tom Cruise’s face onto his own.

In a December 2021 interview with Today, Miles reflected on his use of the face-swapping tech.

“As I find myself the unofficial face of this deepfake movement, it’s important to learn and I’m fascinated by this,” Miles said. “This is the bleeding edge of technology.”

In real life, Paris is married to author Carter Reum. Meanwhile, Tom Cruise, who was formerly married to Katie Holmes from 2006 to 2012, Nicole Kidman from 1990 to 2001 and Mimi Rogers from 1987 to 1990, has not confirmed a new romance.

But in the TikTok world, it appears these two pop-culture icons are “together.” At the end of their shockingly realistic spoof, Paris and deepfake Tom agreed to skydive into their date night.

How did Paris feel about their adventure? She ended the video by channeling the real action star and saying, “I do my own stunts.”

While the video has racked up over 10.5 million views, it remains to be seen if the real Tom Cruise has seen this incredible stunt.

French projections: Macron’s centrists will keep a majority

PARIS (AP) — French President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist alliance is expected to keep its parliamentary majority after the first round of voting Sunday, but will likely have far fewer seats than five years ago, according to projections.

Projections based on partial election results showed that at the national level, Macron’s party and its allies got about 25%-26% of the vote. That was neck-and-neck with estimates for a new leftist coalition composed of hard-left, Socialists and Green party supporters. Yet Macron’s candidates are projected to win in a greater number of districts than their leftist rivals, giving the president a majority.

More than 6,000 candidates, ranging in age from 18 to 92, ran Sunday for 577 seats in France’s National Assembly in the first round of the election.

France’s two-round voting system is complex and not proportionate to the nationwide support for a party. For races that did not have a decisive winner on Sunday, up to four candidates who got at least 12.5% support each will compete in a second round of voting on June 19.

Following Macron’s reelection in May, his centrist coalition was seeking an absolute majority that would enable it to implement his campaign promises, which include tax cuts and raising France’s retirement age from 62 to 65.

Yet Sunday’s projection shows Macron’s party and allies could have trouble getting more than half the seats at the Assembly, much less than five years ago, when they won 361 seats. Polling agencies estimated that Macron’s centrists could win from 255 to over 300 seats, while the leftist coalition led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon could win more than 200 seats.

Sunday’s turnout reached a record low for a parliamentary election, with less than half of France’s 48.7 million voters casting ballots.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said “we have one week of action, one week to convince, one week to get a strong and clear majority.”

“Faced with the situation in the world and the war at Europe’s doors, we cannot take the risk of instability,” she said, urging voters to gather behind Macron’s alliance in the second round. “Faced with extremes, we will not yield.”

Mélenchon, who had hoped the election would vault him into the prime minister’s post, did not accept the preliminary projections, insisting that his coalition came in first.

“Projections in numbers of seats at this hour make quite no sense,” he said.

Mélenchon urged the French to choose his coalition’s candidates in the second round and “definitively reject the doomed projects of the majority of Macron.” His platform included a significant minimum wage increase, lowering the retirement age to 60 and locking in energy prices, which have been soaring due to the war in Ukraine.

Even though Macron beat far-right rival Marine Le Pen in the presidential runoff, France’s parliamentary election is traditionally a difficult race for far-right candidates. Rivals from other parties tend to coordinate or step aside to boost the chances of defeating far-right candidates in the second round.

Projections showed that Le Pen’s far-right National Rally party could get 10 to 30 seats — up from eight five years ago. If it passes the threshold of 15 seats, it can form a parliamentary group and gain greater power at the assembly.

Le Pen, who ran for reelection in her stronghold of Henin-Beaumont, in northern France, praised Sunday’s results.

“Next Sunday, it is important not to let Emmanuel Macron get an absolute majority, which he will abuse to implement his self-centered and brutal methods and impose his anti-social project,” she said.

Le Pen called on voters to vote blank or not go to the polls in districts that have only Macron’s or Mélenchon’s candidates.

Outside a voting station in a working-class district of Paris, voters debated whether to support Macron’s party for the sake of smooth governance and keeping out extremist views, or to back his opponents to ensure that more political perspectives are heard.

“When you have a parliament that’s not completely in line with the government, that enables more interesting conversations and discussions,” said Dominique Debarre, retired scientist. “But on the other hand, (a split) is always in some way a sign of failure.”
