Robert Redford wore two pairs of undies to ‘protect himself’ from Barbra Streisand in ‘The Way We Were’: book

Safety came first for Robert Redford on the set of his sweeping romantic drama.

The actor allegedly wore “two athletic supporters” to film his love scene with Barbra Streisand for their 1973 film “The Way We Were.”

The claim was made by author Robert Hofler in his book published on Tuesday titled “The Way They Were: How Epic Battles and Bruised Egos Brought a Classic Hollywood Love Story to the Screen.”

The book, timed to the 50th anniversary of the film’s release, explores how the instant classic was “a nightmare to make, with a difficult cast, a jumbled plot about mismatched partners, countless delays and rewrites, on-set tensions between everyone involved, difficulties at every step of the production, the skyrocketing demands of Ms. Streisand, a leading man who happily ditched premieres on both coasts and mixed critical reviews.”

“The Way We Were” explores how Katie Morosky, played by Barbra Streisand, and Hubbell Gardiner, played by Robert Redford, “come together only to find out that genuine friendship and physical attraction is not enough to overcome fundamental societal beliefs.”

Reps for Redford, 86, and Streisand, 80, did not immediately respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment. The U.K.’s DailyMail published the original excerpt on Wednesday. Fox News Digital obtained a copy of the book.

Hofler claimed that Redford was reluctant to work alongside the “Funny Girl” star, and when it was time to get in bed with Streisand, the Hollywood heartthrob did not take any chances. He allegedly doubled up on the jock straps “to protect himself in more ways than one,” while Streisand “chose to don a bikini.”

“Redford was a happily married family man with four children when he signed to do ‘The Way We Were,'” Hofler explained in his book.

“It was a pretty G-rated scene,” assistant director Michael Britton shared.

Producer Ray Stark cautioned that he did not want “a heavily shadowed nude scene.” However, the film was going to be rated PG, and he had already deleted a “f—” from the script to avoid “a dreaded R rating.” This would ensure “the largest audience possible” at the box office.

The intimate scene was supposed to be a simple one to film on a closed set. However, Britton said, “there were a lot of takes.” At one point, Redford looked at director Sydney Pollack, implying he had enough. Redford would later joke to a Newsweek reporter that the only thing he wore on set for the scene was “Aramis,” the Estée Lauder fragrance for men.

“Redford tended to do his best in the first take, maybe the second, rarely the third, never the fourth,” Hofler wrote. “From there, he tended to lose energy and concentration.”

Eventually, Redford “lost patience and Pollack had no choice but to inform his female star, ‘I think we’ve got it.'” Editor John Burnett was said to be “amazed at how much footage he had to work with to put together the simple lovemaking scene.”

However, there may have been another reason why Redford was wary about the love scene. The book alleged Streisand was “infatuated” and “mesmerized” with her co-star, who was playing a “Ken doll,” as he described.

“Barbra Streisand was a star who reportedly had affairs with many of her leading men,” claimed an unnamed member from the film set.

During their second love scene, Redford allegedly refused to say the line, “It will be better this time,” because he felt people would assume he was not a good lover.

“Redford was never bad in bed” so his character couldn’t be either, Hofler noted.

The book claimed Redford had concerns about his leading lady from the start. The actor told Pollack he did not believe Streisand was “a serious actress” because she “had never been tested.”

“Her reputation is as a very controlling person,” said Redford, as quoted in the book. “She will direct herself. It’ll never work… She’s not going to sing, is she? I don’t want her to sing in the middle of the movie.”

Streisand went on to sing the film’s iconic theme song, “The Way We Were.”

It took eight months of “incessant wooing” from Pollack for Redford to finally sign on. Ryan O’Neal was at one point another name being considered for the film.

On set, it was easy to see that Streisand “had a massive crush on Bob,” but the two could not be more different.

“Barbra wanted precision; Redford, spontaneity,” said Pollack. “Barbra likes lengthy rehearsals and multiple takes. Redford is better in his early takes. After that, he just gets bored.”

Still, there was no denying that for their first reading, it was like a “lightning bolt” went off in the room.

There was one thing the stars had in common. The book claimed they both preferred having the left side of their faces to be on camera. Cinematographer Harry Stradling Jr. claimed that during scenes shot in New York City, they erected canopies everywhere to block the light from hitting Streisand’s face because her nose looked “terrible.” As for Redford, he did not like showing the three moles on the right side of his face.

The film became a hit and a sequel was even discussed. However, Redford shot down the possibility. The actor said he never had any interest in making a second part, “but Barbra did.”

Aaron Carter fiancee Melanie Martin regains full custody of pair’s baby son Prince

Aaron Carter’s on-off fiancée Melanie Martin has regained full custody of their baby son Prince, one month after the singer’s tragic death aged 34.

Prince, who was born in November 2021, was placed in the care of Melanie’s mother when he was a few months old, with Carter getting supervised visitation rights.

TMZ reports that Martin, 35, was found fit to care for her child at a hearing held on Thursday in Los Angeles, and she was awarded full custody.

Martin is currently in New York with Carter’s friend, rapper Checkthestar, but was informed by her legal team. She is now on her way back to California to collect her son.

Custody battle: Aaron Carter’s on-off fiancee Melanie Martin has regained custody of their baby son Prince, one month after the singer’s tragic death aged 34 (pictured January)

Melanie told the publication: ‘I’m honoring Aaron today and I know he would be so proud of me. I’m very emotional thinking we could have been a family, but Aaron would be so happy knowing I got him back.’

Aaron’s mom Jane Schneck agreed with the decision and added: ‘The child should be with the mother.’

Prince was removed from the care of Aaron and Melanie over alleged concerns about drug use and domestic violence during the pair’s on-off romance.

This turned into a protracted custody battle with the couple frequently rekindling and ending their romance.

Earlier this year, Carter filed for custody of their son and a petition for protection against Martin at the Antelope Valley Courthouse in Los Angeles County.

In a court filing, he accused his ex of ’emotional distress, anguish, shoving, & scratching’, and claimed she used the threat of suicide to abuse him ’emotionally.’

I Want Candy singer Aaron was found dead in his bathtub at his Lancaster, California home on November 5 – with his manner of death still unconfirmed, pending toxicology results.

This comes amid claims Carter’s  family is reportedly trying to heal a rift after his mom blamed the singer’s fiancée for his death.

In a series of now-deleted tweets from November 28, Schneck accused his partner Martin of nagging her late son for money and profiting over his death. She started the messages: ‘My Baby boy is dead,’ before adding: ‘I’ve been warning him for two years now. He almost came home.’

But now Jane is trying to make nice with Melanie, it has been claimed.

Aaron started dating Melanie in 2020 and got engaged in June of the same year, before having their son, Prince, in November 2021.

They were living apart when the singer was found dead. His mom Jane is said to have never met his son.

Fatherhood:  Carter said he wanted to focus on regaining custody of his one year-old son Prince before entering rehab before his death

According to TMZ, Melanie has said she and Jane had a ‘fairly good relationship’ before Aaron died and didn’t hold her tweets against her. She also reportedly said an assistant for Aaron’s twin sister, Angel, reached out to apologize for Jane’s messages and said they had been removed.

Aaron’s family will hold a private memorial service for the singer in 2023, when they will reportedly spread his ashes. Melanie said she has been invited to the ceremony and still wants Jane to meet Aaron’s son Prince after Christmas.

TMZ also reported Jane does not want a war with Melanie and wants what’s best for her grandson. It comes after Aaron’s family said they want his son to inherit his estate.

The late singer’s mom told TMZ even though she has yet to meet her 12-month-old grandson, Prince. She wants him to be the beneficiary of his dad’s assets as the family ‘doesn’t need the money.’

Jane added she wants to have a relationship with her grandson and Aaron’s on-off fiancée, Melanie, who currently has custody of the child.

Tribute: Aaron was the younger brother of Backstreet Boy star Nick Carter, 42, who he was estranged from at the time of his death

After Aaron was found dead, his mum is said to have asked Aaron’s twin Angel to file a petition to serve as administrator of his estate, which is thought to be worth $500,000.

Melanie told Us Weekly about the financial arrangements: ‘I don’t want any problems or stress over Aaron’s estate. I just want Prince to be taken care of and want Aaron’s legacy to live on… whoever wants to be in Prince’s life can be in Prince’s life.’

Aaron’s cause of death is yet to be determined, pending toxicology results.

But the singer, who battled addictions and mental health issues for years, was reportedly found with pills and cans of compressed air near his body.

His Backstreet Boys singer brother Nick Carter, 42, who is facing sexual assault allegations from four women, has said it was ‘tough’ to perform on stage the day after Aaron was found dead.

Concern: Aaron publicly battled mental health conditions and drug addiction during his lifetime

Google Pixel Watch guide pairs bands with faces

The Pixel Watch is launching with an extensive band and face collection, and Google has delightfully created a pairing guide of sorts.

For example, the default Active band is made of “waterproof fluoroelastomer with a soft-touch coating” that makes it “both durable and comfortable.” Google says it “goes well with” the Analog face that is described as “minimal yet chic,” while supporting one circular complication slot. Most Google advertising uses this combination.

The Active band is available in Obsidian, Charcoal, Chalk, Hazel, and Lemongrass, but ultimately did launch in Coral, which was possibly leaked in a Google Store email.

The Stretch band (Linen, Rose, Obsidian), which Isabelle Olsson (Senior Director, Design for Wearables, Nest, and CMF across Google hardware) equates to a comfortable pair of sneakers, is best with the “large numbers of the Big Time watch face.” In fact, the different colors for hours and minutes brings out the two tone nature of the band:

“It really stretches and fits your life,” Olsson says. Quite literally. When the band is expanded, it offers a glimpse of another color, highlighting the texture.

Inspired by apparel, the Woven band (Lemongrass, Coral, Ivy) goes well with the Vista face that shows the time and a landscape illustration. Like with the other fabric band, “the [watch face] colors also coordinate with the colors in the band.”

The Pixel Watch’s leather bands (Two-Tone and Crafted) go well with either the Prime watch face (which is said to be for typography lovers because Google Sans) or the info-packed Dial face and its four complication slots.

Lastly, there’s the Metal Mesh and Metal Link bands coming in spring 2023, though we already know the price:

Classic has an analog clock plus the date and weather in a design that references more traditional watches. Concentric has more of a technical look, with a digital time and rows of numbers common on diving watches.

Stanford Redefines Parents as ‘Mother Pairs’ and ‘Mixed-Gender’ in Study

Stanford University’s School of Medicine released the results of a study of 1.5 million pregnant women, including 2,572 lesbian couples, and found that “mother pairs” had more medical problems than “mixed-gender” couples — couples made up of a man and a woman.

The birth data also included “a tiny portion of fathers who gave birth. They were identified as presumably trans men who retained a uterus. No disparities emerged among those 498 fathers, whose births represented just 0.034 percent of the total studied,” the San Francisco Chronicle reported.

“The disparities faced by people who were mothers in partnership with a mother were striking,” Stephanie Leonard, a Stanford instructor and lead author of the study, which was published on Monday in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, said.

The Chronicle reported on the complications lesbian couples experienced disproportionately, including:

  • 8 percent of lesbian couples had multiple fetuses versus 1.5 percent male/female couples.
  • 19 percent of lesbians required induced labor versus 13 percent of male/female couples.
  • 8.6 percent of lesbian couples experienced hemorrhaging, or bleeding profusely, after giving birth, versus 4.4 percent of male/female couples.

The Chronicle report included speculation that the problems could be related to the stress of being a lesbian.

Dr. Juno Obedin-Maliver, the study’s senior author and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Stanford Medicine, said that he believes the greater health problems in this group of mothers are a result of the negative effects of “stigma and discrimination” on health.

He cited “weddings, parenting magazines, and breast-feeding classes” as example of ways lesbian pairs may not feel represented, suggesting these are all designed with traditional couples in mind.

The report said that the disparity in outcomes could not be attributed to socioeconomic factors, and even after ruling out differences in education, insurance, age, pre-existing health conditions and other factors, the researchers found “mother/mother partners” had more complications than mother/father couples.

The Stanford study was made possible, researchers said, by a California law that altered birth certificates by no longer requiring “mother” and “father,” and switched to “parent giving birth” and “parent not giving birth.”

On the new state forms, each parent “can indicate whether they identify as a mother or father.”

Pairs Figure Skating: Photos and Results

Figure skating’s last competition at the Beijing Games is the pairs free skate Saturday at the Capital Indoor Stadium.

Sui Wenjing and Han Cong, a popular Chinese team, finished first in the short program on Friday. They are eager for redemption: They had victory within their grasp at the 2018 Olympics, but lost the gold medal by a mere 0.43 points.

They face tough competition from three Russian pairs. Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov placed second in the short program, trailing Sui and Han by a fraction of a point. Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov, the reigning world champions, were in third.

Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii of Russia led after 13 of 16 pairs had performed the free skate, with Peng Cheng and Jin Yang of China in second. The top medal contenders will skate last.

Pairs are judged on two events: Friday’s short program and Saturday’s free skate, which lasts four minutes. Medal winners will be determined by adding the scores from the two events.

Pairs Figure Skating: See Photos From the Short Program

The final figure skating competition of the Beijing Olympics opened on Friday, as 18 pairs took the ice for the short program, a two-minute skate.

Unlike the ice dancing competition that took place earlier in the Games, pairs figure skating prioritizes more acrobatic skills: jumps, overhead lifts and throws.

Friday’s competition included performances by the rival pairs Anastasia Mishina and Aleksandr Galliamov of Russia, the reigning world champions, and Sui Wenjing and Han Cong of China, who won world titles in 2017 and 2019.

Sui and Han are eager for redemption. They had the gold within their grasp at the 2018 Olympics, but lost by a mere 0.43 points to a German team.

The early edge on Friday went to the Chinese team, which took the lead with the free skate still to come on Saturday. Mishina and Galliamov were in third, behind their fellow Russians Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov.

Android 12L Beta 1: App Pairs replace ‘Split screen’ on Pixel

As we’ve been expecting since the start of this year, Android is getting a new “App Pairs” feature that is live in 12L Beta 1. On phones, it replaces the previous “Split screen” approach to multitasking.

From Recents/multitasking, tapping the icon at the top of the screen reveals the same menu as before. However, Split screen has been replaced by “Pin to top,” though the same icon is used.

Like before, that app shrinks down, but you now get the regular card size instead of a shrunken down preview. Google has made the pull tab in between the two windows wider, while you no longer get a live adjustment. Rather, the app icons appear as the background flashes out until you stop adjusting.

The big change introduced by App Pairs in Android 12L is how groupings can be preserved in the Recents view rather than the top application being pinned in perpetuity. Multiple App Pairs can be created and accessed, while the joint card in multitasking features both icons at the top.

Meanwhile, you can double-tap the white divider to flip/switch the top and bottom apps/windows in the pairing (h/t Dylan).

App Pairs

Compared to other multitasking approaches — namely Microsoft’s on the Duo, you cannot save a pairing.

This capability is geared towards large screens, but there are some scenarios where it’s useful to have on mobile. Currently, the Android 12L Beta 1 emulator running on a tablet device shows a “Split” button, alongside “Screenshot” and “Select,” so App Pairs branding/implementation is not finalized.

New dinosaur discovered with a bizarre ‘club like’ tail featuring seven pairs of bladed spikes to fight off predators

  • Fossils revealing a new type of dinosaur have been discovered in Southern Chile.

  • The creature features a tail that resembles a ‘war club’ and would have been used as a weapon.

  • The study explaining the find says the Stegourus is “unlike any dinosaur.”

Fossils in Chile have revealed a new dinosaur species with a spiked tail for stabbing and slicing.

The new type of dinosaur named the Stegouros has a tail “resembling an Aztec war club, with seven pairs of blades lining the tail.

An article published December 1 in the academic journal Nature describes a small, two-meter-long creature that survived on a plant-based diet and had a tail “unlike any dinosaur”.

Several of the fossilized remains of the Stegouros elengassen, a newly identified armored dinosaur that inhabited the Chilean Patagonia, are displayed during a press conference in Santiago, Chile, Wednesday, Dec. 1, 2021.(AP Photo/Esteban Felix)

The club-like tail was used as a weapon to inflict gruesome wounds on predators.

The discovery of the fossil places the dinosaur in the late Cretaceous period — a geological period around 100.5 – 66 million years ago — in southernmost Chile.

Due to the rear of the creature somewhat resembling a Stegosaurus, researchers gave it a name close to that species, however, later DNA analysis found that it was only distantly related, and was in fact a rare type of the ankylosaur genus of dinosaurs.

Dr. Alex Vargas, one of the lead authors of the groundbreaking study, called the dinosaur “the lost family branch of the ankylosaur,” AP reports.

Speaking to AP about this discovery, Macalester College biologist Kristi Curry Rogers said that the tail of the Stegouros is “really bizarre”, but that the finding was made all the more unusual by the location, as Southern Chile is “a region that hasn’t yielded these types of animals before.”

“It’s a really unusual weapon,” Dr. Vargas, a University of Chile paleontologist, told AP. “Books on prehistoric animals for kids need to update and put this weird tail in there. … It just looks crazy.”
