Researchers make cyborg cockroaches that carry their own power packs

Kenjiro Fukuda, RIKEN

Have you ever thought you’d be seeing a cyborg cockroach that runs on solar power and carries a backpack that looks like an electric circuit? A team of researchers at Japan’s RIKEN research institute has turned a regular Madagascar hissing cockroach into a real cyborg insect by connecting a lithium battery, a solar cell, multiple wires, and a tiny electronic circuit. The cyborg can be controlled using Bluetooth signals, and the researchers suggest that, in the future, such robo-bugs could be employed for search-and-rescue missions.

The researchers refer to their cyborg as an insect-computer hybrid system, and it incorporates a living insect as a platform and a mini-electronic system as its controller. Basically, it’s a biobot that can be controlled like a robot, but it has the power to explore and navigate a complex environment with the proficiency of an insect. The researchers claim that insect cyborgs could even beat traditional soft robots when it comes to usefully navigating the real world.

Going solar

Keeping the body shape of the 6-cm-long cockroach in mind, the researchers designed a polymer backpack that could carry all the electronic equipment without disturbing the insect when it moved. The backpack carried an electronic controller, a lithium battery, and multiple wires. Each wire was connected to the controller on one side and to different legs of the cockroach on the other.

Whenever the researchers want the cockroach to move, they send a Bluetooth signal to the circuit board, which transmits electric current to the legs via the wires. These currents mimic sensory input that directs the roach to move to the right or left, taking advantage of reflexive behavior. The roach’s brain is still needed to activate its muscles and get the cockroach to move.

However, the researchers soon realized that a cyborg insect might be required to function for many days or even weeks. The tiny lithium battery won’t be enough to meet the energy demands for that long, and, since the cockroach’s brain is intact, it may abandon any mission it was sent on and run away.

To boost the energy supply, an ultrathin solar cell was created and planted on the cockroach’s abdomen to overcome this issue. Despite being only 4×10⁻³ mm thick, the solar cell provided 50 times the power needed for the control unit. Unfortunately, it was wide enough to hinder the movement of the cockroach. During initial testing, the researchers found that the insect was moving at half of its original speed, and every time it flipped or fell, it wasn’t able to get back to its normal orientation.

The researchers made some adjustments to the position and arrangement of the cell, and finally, they were able to equip the cyborg cockroach with a solar cell and battery that provided 17.2 mW of power.

While explaining the significance of the solar cell unit further, research scientists and one of the authors of the study, Kenjiro Fukuda, told Ars Technica, “To achieve the urban rescue task, cyborg insects contain computers to control the locomotion, sensors for searching [for] people, and wireless communication device. These require 10-100 mW of total power consumption. Therefore, energy-harvesting devices mounted on the insects are crucial for increasing the range of activity and functionality of biobots.”

He also said that other scientists proposed additional types of biorobots ranging from moth robots to cyborg beetles. However, most of these cyborg insects lack energy-harvesting devices on their body because the area and load of the harvesting device considerably impair their mobility. So adding a suitable energy-harvesting device (the solar cell) for recharging the electronic controlling unit on a cyborg insect has been one of the main achievements of their research.

Cyborgs vs. soft robots

It may seem more practical and easy to use soft robots instead of cyborg insects for search-and-rescue missions. Soft robots would never abandon the mission like cyborg cockroaches; plus, they can be made faster and more efficient. So then, why do we need cyborg insects? The answer is energy and cost—to turn a cockroach into a cyborg, all we need is a miniature circuit, an energy source, some wires, a controlling unit, and a polymer backpack. A soft robot is entirely made from scratch.

Although connecting the wires to a cockroach’s legs may seem time-consuming, the amount of time required to construct a soft robot is greater. Moreover, such robots have high energy demands compared to their insect counterparts. “We control the locomotion of insects by using electric signals to sensory nerves. This approach requires a power consumption of ~100 uW, which is much smaller than the required power consumption of moving actuators for small robots (typically 100 mW or larger),” said Fukuda.

Apart from having the capabilities of a robot, a cyborg cockroach navigates an environment using the input it receives from its natural senses. This is something a soft robot can never accomplish, and therefore, the researchers argue that cyborg insects could provide better assistance during search-and-rescue missions compared to any other technology. Fukuda and his team are now planning to make cyborg versions of other types of insects, including ones that can fly.

Vijay D’s Liger Trailer: Packs A Hulky Punch

A rags-to-riches story is a feasible theme, if narrated impeccably. A fresh set-up with engaging screenplay and needed emotions are a must for these kinds of stories.

Director Puri Jagannadh opted for sports drama for his maiden Pan India project Liger starring Vijay Deverakonda in the titular role and has given his touch, in terms of characters designing and the narrative.

Megastar Chiranjeevi and Rebel Star Prabhas have launched the Telugu trailer of the movie.

Liger is an inspiring underdog story of a Mumbai chaiwala whose life is full of adventures and drama.

Love-hate, insults, almost nothing stops him in attaining his goal. Mother kicks him, coach beats him, lover rejects him, which make him become a stronger person altogether.

The trailer actually starts off with Ramya Krishna giving definition to the name Liger given to his son, which hints about his birth secret.

Then we get to see the heroics of Vijay Deverakonda and his madness in the ring. Besides giving powerful punches, he dances crazily in the ring.

If you are wondering whether Mike Tyson is there. Of course, he is there to give final punch to this power-packed trailer.

“If you are a fighter, what am I,” says Mike Tyson in his style, and his warning with hand gestures somehow disappoints, since that’s the end and we need to wait till the release to see more about this deadly combo.

However, the trailer packs a hulky punch with masterly work and collective efforts from the lead cast and the technical team.

Puri Jagannadh is a master, when it comes to presenting his heroes in first of its kind characters and giving them stylish best makeovers.

Vijay Deverakonda’s screen presence, his stammer, body language and appearance are just wow. Ramya Krishna surprises in a mass mother role, whereas Ananya Pandey appeared like a typical girlfriend of this generation. Then, Mike Tyson’s entry towards the end made the big difference.

Backed by Puri Connects and Bollywood’s leading production house Dharma Productions, the team of Liger spent money profusely to get a rich and superior look.

Cinematography, music and editing are the other superior works. Action choreography of Kecha deserves special mention.

The film, Liger, will have Pan India release on August 11th.

Panic at Israeli airport as US family packs unexploded bombshell for flight home | Israel

An American family set off a bomb scare at Israel’s main airport when they showed security inspectors an unexploded shell that they found while visiting the Golan Heights and had packed for their return trip, authorities said.

Video circulated on social media showed panicked passengers scattering at Ben Gurion Airport’s departure hall near Tel Aviv on Thursday.

The Israel Airports Authority said a man was hospitalised with injuries sustained as he tried to flee over a baggage carousel.

The Jewish Press reported that during the family’s Golan Heights trip one of the children found and took a bombshell they were planning to take home as a souvenir. When it was shown at the airport’s luggage check-in, security called for an evacuation of the area.

The airports authority said the family was allowed to board their flight after an interrogation by security staff, who declared an all-clear.

Israel, which has high levels of aviation security, clashed with Syria over the Golan during the wars of 1967 and 1973.

Spiders hunt in packs of hundreds to swarm prey

Pack hunting spiders exist in places other than your nightmares. While most spiders enjoy solitary lives, 20 of the roughly 50,000 known spider species live in colonies. One species, Anelosimus eximius, lives in extremely large colonies of up to 1,000 individual spiders that work together to build webs spanning several meters. When prey falls into their web, these social spiders coordinate and attack their victim together, which allows them to take down much larger prey than they could if they hunted alone. Until now, exactly how these spiders carry out such coordinated attacks was a mystery.

It turns out, the spiders use vibrations in their mega-web to choreograph a synchronized swarming process, the study found.

“What is fantastic is that there is no leadership role among these spiders,” said Raphael Jeanson, a researcher at the Research Center on Animal Cognition (CRCA)  at the University of Toulouse in France and senior author on a new study about the social arachnids. Rather, the entire spider colony coordinates its attack with each individual receiving the same information.

As the colony attacks, the spiders descend on their prey by synchronizing two movement stages: closing in on their struggling victim and standing still. This allows the spiders to time their approach so that all of them strike at once.

Using both field observations and computer simulations of this coordinated attack, Jeanson’s team learned that the attack is directed almost entirely by vibrations in the shared web.

“When the prey falls in the web, this triggers the movement of the spiders,” Jeanson told Live Science. “But after a while, they all stop for a few milliseconds before they start moving again.”

By luring the spiders with a dead fly glued to the end of a vibration generator, the researchers showed that hunting behavior was, in fact, triggered by the struggling of helpless prey. However, that didn’t explain the colony’s coordinated movements.

For that, scientists needed a computer model. The models revealed that while the prey vibrations might trigger the initial movement, it was the vibrations made by the spider colony that enabled the predators to coordinate their attack. As each spider sensed vibrations from the prey, they started walking. But the steps of hundreds of spiders converging on a struggling insect also sent vibrations through the web’s fibers, and muddied the sounds of a trapped meal.

“It’s a bit like when you are in a room with people chatting,” said Jeanson. To a spider, every step it takes makes noise. They then have to stop moving so they can listen for the prey, to make sure they are still heading in the right direction.

The quieter the struggling prey is, the harder it can be for the spiders to coordinate their stop-and-go movements. When the researchers vibrated the web and then removed the lure, the colony responded by moving toward the prey, but then every spider had to stop moving to “listen” for telltale signs of squirming. If the prey was vibrating more intensely, the colony didn’t need to be as quiet, so they were less synchronized, the scientists discovered

This study was published March 7 in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Nubia’s new Red Magic phone packs a 165Hz screen and up to 18GB of RAM

Nubia has come a long way since it first stuffed a cooling fan into its Red Magic gaming phones. Today, the Chinese brand is back with the Snapdragon 888-based Red Magic 6 series, which not only boasts a faster internal fan, but also two world firsts in the mobile market: a 165Hz display and up to 18GB of RAM. On top of that, the phones offer up to 120W rapid charging (already used by Xiaomi and Vivo), 400Hz capacitive shoulder triggers and an optional dual-fan, dual-TEC (thermoelectric cooling) clip-on cooler.

Nubia

The Android 11-powered Red Magic 6 comes in three flavors, all of which share the same 6.8-inch FHD+ AMOLED screen, with 500Hz single-touch or 360Hz multi-touch sampling for better gaming response. Likewise, these devices pack identical cameras: a 64MP main shooter, an 8MP ultra-wide camera and a 2MP macro camera on the rear, plus an 8MP selfie camera on the other side. You’ll also find a 3.5mm headphone jack across the series.

Nubia

The “basic” Red Magic 6 features a full glass rear body, and it comes in either “carbon fiber black” or a more flamboyant “cyber neon.” It packs a 5,050mAh battery which supports up to 66W charging, along with an 18,000rpm — up from the earlier 15,000rpm — internal fan to assist the phone’s vapor cooling chamber and graphene plate.

Nubia

Things get more interesting with the Red Magic 6 Pro which is available in “iron black” or “ice blade silver,” and it adds a piece of aluminum plate across the back to boost heat dissipation. The single battery is replaced by two cells that add up to 4,500mAh, and despite the lower total capacity, this allows for a more rapid 120W charging — a mere five minutes brings a dead phone back up to 50 percent. Furthermore, the fan speed on the Pro goes up to a faster 20,000rpm.

Nubia

And finally, we have the “Dao” transparent special edition, which not only has a glowing fan but also up to 18GB of RAM.

The Tencent Games-optimized Red Magic 6 is already available for ordering in China, with the base model starting from 3,799 yuan (about $590), and the Pro model starting from 4,399 yuan (about $680). The premium “Dao” transparent edition is asking for 5,599 yuan (around $865; 16GB RAM + 256GB storage) and 6,599 yuan (around $1,120; 18GB RAM + 512GB storage).

Nubia

The good news for the majority of us is that Nubia is also prepping a global launch for the Red Magic 6 series on March 16th, which will likely be preloaded with Google services. We shall hear more then.
