Overwatch 2’s new tank hero Ramattra revealed at OWL Grand Finals

The next hero coming to Overwatch 2 isn’t exactly new. Players got a glimpse of him, an Omnic activist known as Ramattra, more than three years ago, at the conclusion of an Overwatch Archives event called Storm Rising. That event’s cliffhanger reveal of a menacing Omnic teaming up the villain Doomfist finally paid off on Friday at the Overwatch League Grand Finals, when Blizzard Entertainment revealed the new tank-class character coming to Overwatch 2 next month.

Ramattra will join the Overwatch 2 roster on Dec. 6, debuting alongside the game’s second season. He’ll be the game’s 11th tank character, and will bring a unique mechanic to the tank group: Ramattra has two forms, a standard Omnic form and a hulking second form, called Nemesis.

In his standard Omnic form, Ramattra battles using a staff that fires projectiles and can create a barrier to protect his team. But when Ramattra hulks out, using an ability on a cooldown, he becomes a gigantic brawler capable of powerful melee attacks that will strike fear into “squishies” on the opposing team. Overwatch developers described Ramattra’s transformation as “scary” and “menacing,” turning him from a fairly standard-sized hero into one of the game’s largest. That change into his more aggressive Nemesis form makes him deadlier, but it also makes him a much bigger target for attacks like Ana’s sleep dart or Zenyatta’s orb of discord.

But Ramattra will offer tank players new gameplay opportunities, letting them decide between protecting their team with longer range attacks and barriers, or aggressively leading the charge into battle. His punches, while in Nemesis form, can pierce through barriers, lead hero designer Alec Dawson said, providing counters to “bubbles” from heroes like Winston and Zarya.

Blizzard didn’t divulge too much about Ramattra’s ability kit or his stats during a press briefing on Thursday, and instead focused on the Omnic’s narrative place in Overwatch’s world.

According to Blizzard’s official origin story, Ramattra was built as a war machine for the Omnic Crisis, but he put down his weapons, seeking tranquility alongside Zenyatta. For a time, Ramattra followed that peaceful path before ultimately leading Null Sector, and fighting for the survival of his people by any means necessary.

“Omnics and humans have tried to coexist, but as you’ve seen in the lore, that has not been going well for them,” lead narrative designer Gavin Jurgens-Fyhrie said. “Ramattra is tired of waiting and has grown impatient. He has formed this organization with some allies to fight for the freedom of the Omnic people and win their safety at any cost.”

Like Kiriko, it sounds like Ramattra will roll out to players via Overwatch 2’s battle pass. Players who pay for the premium version of that pass will get him immediately, while other players will need to level up the free version of the pass to unlock him. Asked whether Blizzard plans to change the required battle pass level — which was 55 for Kiriko — for Ramattra’s release, art director Dion Rogers deferred, saying that the Overwatch team is regularly evaluating its plans. “It’s a constant conversation for our team,” Rogers said.

Ramattra will arrive in season 2 alongside a new map, one that developers said has unspecified ties to the new hero. More heroes, including a new support-class character, are planned for Overwatch 2 in 2023.

Can you change from a night owl to an early bird? Experts weigh in

Sign up for CNN’s Sleep, But Better newsletter series. Our seven-part guide has helpful hints to achieve better sleep.

CNN
 —

If your body and brain fail to rev up until later in the day, you’re likely a night owl, naturally programmed to enjoy staying up late and sleeping in past traditional school and work start times.

Yet getting up early to meet life’s responsibilities is the bleary-eyed reality of most late-to-bed types — leading many exhausted night owls to wonder: “Can I reprogram my biological clock to be an early riser?”

The answer for most night owls is “Yes, you can,” according to sleep experts. How successful you will be at changing your sleep preferences, however, may be dependent on your genes and your willpower.

“We can make you less of a night owl, but not completely, because the genetic tendency, or predisposition, is still there,” said Dr. Phyllis Zee, director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Illinois.

“It’s like if you have a gene for diabetes, right? You can modify that with your lifestyle, but it doesn’t change it,” Zee said.

Success is also dependent on how much you are willing to work to change behaviors that affect sleep, said Dr. Elizabeth Klerman, a professor of neurology in the division of sleep medicine at Harvard Medical School in Boston.

“Behavior change is very difficult. We can say what works, and then you have to decide if you want to do it,” Klerman said. “We don’t have a magic pill.”

Nature marries our sleep-wake cycle to the Earth’s rotation. Daylight enters your eyes, travels to your brain and suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep. When the sun goes down, your body clock turns melatonin production back on, triggering sleepiness within a few hours.

Your inherited sleep chronotype may alter that process. If you’re an innate early bird, your circadian rhythm releases melatonin earlier than the norm, energizing you to become more active in the morning. Night owls, however, secrete melatonin much later, pushing peak activity and alertness later into the afternoon and evening.

Your body clock also directs when you feel hunger, feel sluggish, and are peppy enough to exercise, so being a night owl may have a downside for your health. Studies have shown evening types are more likely to skip breakfast; eat more later in the day and use more tobacco, alcohol and caffeine. Night owls also have higher levels of visceral body fat in the abdominal region, a key risk factor for type 2 diabetes and heart disease.

While you might not be able to change your genetic predisposition, you don’t have to let it control you. Sleep experts have several techniques to alter your body clock if you’re willing to do them.

Let there be morning light: The first and most important change is to control the timing and type of light you see every morning, Zee said.

“The strongest reset for the circadian system is bright light,” Zee said, “Light in the morning changes the oscillation of your circadian clock genes at both a cellular and molecular level. You are also training all your rhythms, whether it’s sleep, blood pressure, heart rate or your cortisol rhythm to be earlier.”

Flood your eyes with light as soon as that pesky alarm goes off. Use natural sunlight if possible, or turn on artificial lights, especially those in the blue spectrum, which tells the body to wake up. Getting natural light in the winter isn’t easy, so some people use products that brighten slowly until the alarm sounds.

“Dawn simulators are fine,” Zee said. “The problem with these lights is that a lot of people don’t wake up to them or keep shutting them off. If you do that, then I suggest using light (therapy) goggles. Those are easier for many of my patients because you can put them on in bed, and then get up and walk around with these glasses while you are brushing your teeth and getting ready.”

Don’t stop there, Zee added. “Continue to extend brighter light intermittently throughout the entire morning.”

Go dark in the evenings: The flip side of the circadian reset is to turn down the lights at a much earlier time in the evening, especially blue light from electronic devices, which “only pushes your biological clock later,” Klerman said.

Yes, that means turning off your smartphone, laptop, gaming device and TV a lot earlier than you may want to. Before you run screaming for the exit, there are ways to tweak your device.

“You should put filters on your phone to change the color of your display. You can do that on your computer as well so the color is more in the amber or reddish orange range, which doesn’t suppress melatonin,” Zee said.

You can also download a free app called f.lux. It casts a yellow tint upon your screen so you get less blue light exposure, Klerman said.

You can’t turn off the blue light from your television, but you can turn off the TV. “Read a book or play a card game or whatever,” she said.

Eat and exercise earlier: Night owls naturally prefer to eat late, which has been shown to be associated with weight gain and higher obesity, Zee said.

“My rule: Stop eating within three hours of bedtime,” she said. “Because this genetic molecular clock exists in almost every cell of your body, that means it is in your fat and muscle cells, affecting your metabolism. That’s why feeding should be in sync.”

Exercise is critical for good sleep and overall health no matter what time you do it. However, if you’re a night owl, you should try to exercise in the morning or early afternoon, and avoid heavy exercise in the evening, Zee said: “Remember, everything should be in sync.”

Don’t turn to sleeping pills: You want to change your biological clock, not drug your body into sleep. Besides, “behavioral treatment of insomnia is more effective than drugs,” Klerman said.

If light isn’t working quickly enough, however, you can add melatonin about three hours before bedtime — and don’t take too much, Zee said.

“You will take a very low dose of melatonin — half a milligram. More is definitely not better to shift your clock,” she said.

“Very importantly, you have to be in the dark when you do this — you cannot be exposed to bright light during this period of time or using electronics because the blue light will suppress your endogenous melatonin,” Zee added.

She-Hulk’s Comic-Con trailer spoils a cameo with a better cameo

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law

Marvel Studios spent a good chunk of its time at San Diego Comic-Con talking about Daredevil, what with Charlie Cox’s version of The Man Without Fear getting his (second) solo show in Disney+’s Daredevil: Born Again and Cox benefitting from the MCU hitting the retcon button haaaarrrrrd in a new animated series called Spider-Man: Freshman Year (where we will apparently find out that young Spidey met not only Cox’s Hornhead but new versions of Norman Osborn and Henry Osborn, plus Amadeus Cho and Nico Minoru, before the events of Captain America: Civil War).

But those aren’t the only places where Daredevil popped up this weekend: He also made a quick cameo in the new trailer for Disney+’s She-Hulk: Attorney At Law series, flipping into frame right at the end and wearing what appears to be a new costume inspired by his original black-and-yellow outfit from the comics (arguably his worst one, to be honest). The trailer cuts away before you see his face, so this could be some kind of cruel fake-out (get hyped, singular fan of D-Man!), but who else carries billy clubs and does flips like that?

Official Trailer | She-Hulk: Attorney at Law | Disney+

Anyway, the rest of the trailer leans hard into comedy, just like the first one did, with Tatiana Maslany’s Jennifer Walters bantering with her cousin Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) as he trains her in the ways of the Hulk and then getting into some fish-out-of-water hijinks when she returns to New York to start a new life as a giant, green attorney. That’s where she meets various superhero-adjacent characters, like Tim Roth’s Abomination (who was in the last trailer), Benedict Wong’s Wong (from Doctor Strange!), and a group of goons who appear to be classic Marvel villains The Wrecking Crew.

That’s all fun! And the implied existence of sex in the first trailer is even more implied here! Wow! But then Daredevil shows up and that’s all we want to talk and think about. Will She-Hulk and Daredevil get to have a courtroom scene? Will this show acknowledge any events from the Netflix Daredevil show? Will we get to see an appearance from Daredevil’s incorrigible twin brother Mike Murdock (who is definitely a real person and not Matt Murdock in a hat)?

We’ll find out on August 17 when She-Hulk: Attorney At Law premieres on Disney+.

Pros Demo Overwatch 2 Changes At 2021 OWL Championship

Image: Blizzard

Some of the best players in the world took the reins to Overwatch 2 over the weekend during the recent Overwatch League 2021 championship. During the tourney broadcast, these pros showed off a couple of big character reworks and strategic overhauls coming to the sequel, while also highlighting an apparent missing reference to former director Jeff Kaplan.

The long-anticipated sequel to Blizzard’s 2016 breakout team-based shooter took center stage during the OWL finals half-time show, with players from the Washington Justice and Los Angeles Gladiators trying out a new Overwatch 2 game mode called Push. It’s basically a big tug-of-war with a robot called TW-1. In action, it was a frenetic eight minute scramble, if not more on the aggressive side than what most expect from the first-person shooter. It’s a shift that’s left some regular players hopeful and more than a few professional competitors skeptical.

The exhibition match showed off big changes in Overwatch 2, starting with character reworks for DPS-types Sombra and Bastion. Sombra’s manual hack will have a shorter cooldown, can be performed while invisible, and will last longer, thereby disabling targets’ abilities for one second while revealing them through walls for eight. Her primary attack will do 50% more damage to hacked targets, while her EMP ultimate ability will no longer remove shields but will damage opponents by up to 40% of their health.

The overhaul to Bastion is even more dramatic. The robot will no longer be able to self-heal, but he will have access to tactical (but bouncy) grenades that stick to enemies. Bastion will also have a high accuracy, low-rate of fire recon gun that makes him into a “pseudo-sniper.” Instead of turning into a tank for his ultimate, he’ll be able to do that any time with a short cooldown. Bastion’s new ultimate allows him to call down three separate artillery strikes anywhere on the map, and these damage enemies when they hit and again when they explode. But most importantly, Bastion now wears a hat to make him more “relatable.”

How do you do fellow kids:

The match also showed off some of the already known character changes in-action. For example, tank hero Reinhardt’s forward charge can now be directed, making the hulking armor-clad fighter much more mobile. This occasion was also the first time seeing matches reduced to 5v5, and with each side down a tank class, fans also got to see how that pivot would affect the flow of play.

One of the pros involved in the demo, Indy “Space” Halpern, told the Washington Post the whole feel was a bit like Call of Duty with “a lot of action, nonstop.” Washington Justice player Gui-Un “Decay” Jang, who also tested the game, said that based on their experience, Overwatch 2 would rely more on individual mechanics than teamwork.

Another member of the pro Overwatch scene was more blunt about the changes coming in Overwatch 2. “I really do feel that having two tanks in the game added a lot of strategic depth,” Atlanta Reign head coach Brad Rajani said in a post-finals press conference as reported by the Washington Post. “But I’m going to hold back real judgment until I get to see the game up close because, you know, people worked very hard on this.“ He added that the new game might just end up being different, “not worse.”

While Overwatch 2 still doesn’t have a firm release date, the Overwatch League will be using it when its fifth season starts next spring, a change that comes as Blizzard faces the a wave of developer departures and ongoing fallout from a California lawsuit alleging widespread sexual harassment and discrimination. The lawsuit, and parent company Activision Blizzard’s response to it, led to an employee walkout. Recent turn of events also saw the formation of a worker group called ABetterABK, that has demanded an end to forced arbitration and more pay transparency, among other changes.

Overwatch director and Blizzard veteran, Jeff Kaplan, left the company earlier this year prior to news of the lawsuit breaking. It was all seemingly a part of a recent exodus following reports of Activision, Blizzard’s parent company, cutting costs and running creative interference. Overwatch 2 had previously included a nod to Kaplan in the form of a restaurant on its New York City map, which included a that read “Jeph’s Corner Pizza.” One of the new trailers for Bastion’s rework, however, shows that “Jeph” has been removed.

The change comes as Blizzard apparently implements a new policy against including personal references to developers in its games. This move comes in the wake of the California lawsuit and extensive reporting on the company’s unprofessional behavior and sexual misconduct against women. Blizzard is also set to rename Overwatch’s cowboy hero after its namesake, veteran developer Jesse McCree was revealed by a Kotaku report to have been involved in a BlizzCon 2013 “Cosby Suite.” The company parted ways with McCree last month.
