Afghan opposition groups outraged at UN employees photographed under Taliban flag

The U.N. has apologized after employees took photos under Taliban flags during a visit to Afghanistan.

“We are aware of this photo which was taken while the Deputy Secretary-General was meeting the de facto leaders in Afghanistan,” Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the U.N. secretary-general, told Fox News Digital. “Her security had taken her to that meeting and were waiting next door.”

“The photo should never have been taken,” Dujarric stressed. “It was a mistake, and we apologize for it.”

The pictures first surfaced on social media Thursday night, showing U.N. personnel in Kabul taking a picture under Taliban flags.

9 AFGHAN MEN LASHED IN PUBLIC FOR CRIMES UNDER COUNTRY’S NEW RULERS

Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammad, the U.N.’s most senior female official, had visited Afghanistan in an effort to address concerns over women’s rights in the country – particularly access to higher education and limits on women in the workplace.

The delegation is the most senior group of officials to visit the country since the Taliban took power in 2021.

Mohammad looked to speak with senior Taliban leaders to convince them to reverse direction on the restrictions, which have imperiled humanitarian operations since women cannot participate, according to the BBC.

PENTAGON DODGES QUESTIONS ON DETENTION OF AFGHAN ALLY WHO ILLEGALLY CROSSED BORDER: ‘THIS IS AN EMBARRASSMENT’

Ali Maisam Nazary, head of foreign relations for the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan, posted the photos and denounced them as “insensitive.”

“The U.N. personnel in Kabul taking a photo with a terrorist group’s flag brings the United Nation’s impartiality & integrity into question,” Nazary wrote. “We kindly ask Antonio Guterres to investigate this matter & for UNAMA News to prevent such insensitive actions that can tarnish its reputation.”

Nazary separately told Fox News Digital that the photos were “unfortunate” and reiterated concerns over U.N. impartiality and integrity.

“This comes as the Taliban terrorists are allowing Afghanistan to become a hub for international terrorism, and they are increasing their oppression on citizens, especially women,” Nazary said. “Such acts cause us to question the U.N.’s impartiality and integrity in Afghanistan, and we kindly ask Secretary-General Guterres to investigate this matter and prevent any biased move on the part of U.N. personnel visiting Afghanistan in the future.”

Suhail Shaheen, the Taliban’s chosen representative to the U.N. and former spokesman for the Taliban, told Fox News Digital that the words on the Taliban flag belong to “Muslims all over the world.”

“The words written on the white cloth are words that Muslims all over the world believe in, i.e. there is no God but Allah, Mohammad (pbuh) is the prophet of Allah,” Shaheen said. “It belongs to all Muslims, not one nation or government.”

“Anyone who doesn’t believe this are not called Muslims, or say something against it, commits blasphemy,” he added.

Foodies Outraged as Beloved Pasta Brand Discontinues Small Star-Shaped Comfort Food Pastina

‘This is #RonzoniGate.’

Ronzoni is under fire for discontinuing one of its most popular pasta shapes: Pastina.

The small star-shaped pasta, known to many as the star of the soup dish regularly referred to as “Italian penicillin,” will no longer be manufactured by the household pasta producer.

“We hear you and greatly appreciate your love for Ronzoni Pastina. After extensive efforts, we regretfully announce that Ronzoni Pastina is being discontinued,” the official statement shared on both Instagram and Twitter read, with the company noting, “This wasn’t an easy decision to make.”

The brand explained that its “long-term supplier” informed Ronzoni representatives that it would no longer be producing the tiny star-shaped macaroni as of January 2023.

View the original article to see embedded media.

“We searched extensively for an alternative solution but were unable to identify a viable option to make Pastina in the same beloved small shape, size, and standards you have come to expect from Ronzoni,” per the statement. “As a result, we had to make this difficult decision to discontinue this product.”

The statement concluded with a few words of hope, “Your passion for Ronzoni fuels our passion to deliver for you. We haven’t given up, but as of today, we can no longer offer Ronzoni Pastina to our customers. Thank you for your understanding and trust in Ronzoni pasta.”

Despite Ronzoni’s allusion to the idea that the discontinued product could eventually return to store shelves, fans are pretty upset over their current loss.

One Instagram user is too heartbroken to eat their lost box, joking, “I’m putting my last box in a glass case and framing it in my living room.”

“Boycotting all Ronzoni products until they bring back pastina,” tweeted a very disgruntled customer, adding, “You are killing our childhoods and memories of our Italian grandmothers by discontinuing this product.”

“Big mistake, HUGE,” declared another.

“Every #ItalianAmerican needs to boycott @ronzonipasta for their traitorous discontinuing of #pastina – the Italian penicillin,” one more tweeted.

A few even took the opportunity to let their rage at Ronzoni boil over, spewing all of their frustration over recent changes with the company’s pasta in the comments.

“Listen, @ronzonipasta. You don’t tweet for 3 years then you drop this on everyone? What’s up with the smaller Rigatoni No. 27? Discontinued Fusilli? Where’s all the Tubettini and Alphabets? Are you even aware of the #PastaWars? Take your excuses elsewhere. This is #RonzoniGate,” someone else shared alongside some reference photos of the pasta in question.

“First they cancel Tubettini…….now they cancel Pastina……” someone else sneered.

Others, however, flexed their loyalty to other brands of pasta that are still supplying the famed mini macaroni.

“Glad my mom always bought Barilla, a pasta company Italian American moms can rely on when their kids are home sick from school,” one Twitter user quipped.

The passive-aggressiveness continued, with someone else tweeting, “Headed to Barilla if y’all can’t deliver pastina when we want it, Ronzoni. Discontinuing?! Really disappointing…..@BarillaUS @barillagroup thank you, Barilla!!!! I’ll find it and order it because I’m in the deep South and it’s not common here,” to which Barilla replied, “We appreciate your loyalty to us!!”

And then there were the memes–which included the likes of The Sopranos, Ronzoni’s competition, The Golden Girls and more–which you can check out below!

Outraged Celine Dion fans protest outside offices Rolling Stone after music mag omitted from top 200

Because they loved her, fans of Celine Dion have taken to the streets of New York to protest outside the offices of Rolling Stone Magazine after she failed to appear in the publication’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list.

The superstar Canadian singer may have 11 number one hits under her belt and have spent 87 weeks at the very top of the charts, but it was still not enough to make the new year rundown which saw Aretha Franklin come top and Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey making the top five.

On Friday, a group of fans gathered in front of the magazine’s offices to protest Dion’s omission from the magazine’s list.

Calling themselves the ‘Red Heads,’ they carried signs with messages such as ‘We want a recount,’ ‘How can you forget Celine?’, and ‘Rolling Stone, you’ve hit an iceberg,’ a quirky reference to Dion’s hit song ‘My Heart Will Go On’ from the film Titanic.

Fans of Celine Dion have taken to the streets of New York to protest outside the offices of Rolling Stone Magazine after she failed to appear in the publication’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list.

On Friday, a group of fans gathered in front of the offices of Rolling Stone to protest Dion’s exclusion from the magazine’s list.

Fans made all manner of creative signs including some that were very straightforward

Celine Dion failed to appear in the publication’s 200 Greatest Singers of All Time list

Another sign declared ‘Rolling Stone is stoned’ for its omission.

Videos of the Red Heads preparing for the protest were posted on an Instagram fan account with the fans hoping that Rolling Stone will admit to making a mistake in leaving Dion off the list.

‘We hope that Rolling Stone will admit that they made a mistake,’ one fan put simply.

Dion who is the best-selling Canadian recording artist of all-time failed to poll despite her many awards – including five Grammy’s – while many other newer artists, including SZA, Adele and Taylor Swift appeared on the chart.

Rolling Stone has defended its decision, stating that it based the list on ‘originality, influence, the depth of an artist’s catalog and the breadth of their musical legacy.’

Fans demanded that Rolling Stone include the singer in their top 200 list

At the very least, the fans say they would like an apology from Rolling Stone Magazine

The publication also wrote in its article: ‘Before you start scrolling (and commenting), keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List.’

There were no big surprises in the Top 10 of the RS list, other than Dion being missed off it.

Many would agree that having Aretha Franklin at the number one spot is a no-brainer, which was followed up by Whitney Houston, Sam Cooke, Billie Holiday and Mariah Carey, Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Beyoncé, Otis Reeding and Al Green.

While soul and R&B artists dominated the Top 10, those ranked between 11 and 20 were far more varied and eclectic with the addition of rock and pop singers.

The superstar Canadian singer has had 11 number one hits and has spent 87 weeks at the very top of the charts

Rock and roll icons Little Richard and John Lennon were at 11 and 12, followed by Patsy Cline, Freddie Mercury, Bob Dylan, Prince, Elvis Presley, Celia Cruz, Frank Sinatra and Marvin Gaye.

When Rolling Stone first published its 100 Greatest Singers list in 2008, journalists ‘used an elaborate voting process that included input from well-known musicians’ that skewed toward classic rock and singers from the 1960s and 1970s.

This updated version was complied by the publication’s staff and key contributors, and trended towards the last 100 years of popular music, while asking its readers to ‘keep in mind that this is the Greatest Singers list, not the Greatest Voices List.’

Last month, Dion singer said she was ‘focusing on her health and children’ after being diagnosed with rare neurological condition Stiff Person Syndrome, which causes her muscles to tense uncontrollably.

The 54-year-old singer moved fans to tears as she revealed she had the incurable neurological condition in an Instagram post – which has forced her to postpone her European tour.

The condition, which affects one in a million people, ultimately leaves sufferers as ‘human statues’ as it progressively locks the body into rigid positions, leaving sufferers unable to walk or talk.

While there is no cure for SPS, there are treatments to slow down the progression, with Dion revealing she is doing all she can to minimize symptoms.

Celine shares three sons with her late husband – Rene-Charles, 21, and twins Nelson and Eddy, 12 (pictured in May)

She penned: ‘Hello everyone, I’m sorry it’s taken me so long to reach out to you. I miss you all so much and can’t wait to be on stage talking to you in person.

‘As you know, I’ve always been an open book and I wasn’t ready to say anything before but I’m ready now.

‘I’ve been dealing with problems with my health for a long time, and it has been really difficult for me to face my challenges and to talk about everything that I’ve been going through.

‘Recently, I’ve been diagnosed with a very rare neurological disorder called the stiff person syndrome, which affects one in a million people.

‘While we’re still learning about this rare condition, we now know this is what’s been causing all the spasms I’ve been having.’

It’s the latest tragedy to befall Celine following her husband Rene Angelil’s death aged 73 in 2016 (pictured in 2012)

Detailing the impact the condition has had on her, Celine continued: ‘Unfortunately, these spasms affect every aspect of my daily life, sometimes causing difficulties when I walk and not allowing me to use my vocal cords to sing the way I’m used to.

‘It hurts me to tell you today that this means I won’t be ready to restart my tour in Europe in February.

‘I have a great team of doctors working alongside me to help me get better and my precious children who are supporting me and giving me help.

‘I’m working hard with my sports medicine therapist every day to build bac my strength and my ability to perform again but I have to admit it’s been a struggle.

‘All I know is singing it’s what I’ve done all my life and its what I love to do the most.

‘I miss you so much. I miss seeing all of you being on the stage performing for you.

‘I always give 100 percent when I do my show but my condition is now allowing me to give you that right now.

‘For me to reach you again, I have no choice but to concentrate on my health at this moment, and I have hope that I’m on the road to recovery.

‘This is my focus, and I’m doing everything I can to recuperate.

‘I want to thank you so much for your wishes and love and support on my social media. This means a lot to me.

‘Take care of yourselves. Be well. I love you guys so much and I really hope I can see you again real soon.’

The announcement came three months after she had to cancel the start of her Las Vegas comeback residency over the same health issue.

Celine has become known as ‘Queen Of Las Vegas’ because of her enormously successful residencies there.

After retiring from her famous Caesars Palace residency in 2019, she was coaxed back to Sin City to perform at the new Resorts World on the Strip.

A statement on her website said that Celine ‘recently has been treated for severe and persistent muscle spasms which are preventing her from performing, and her recovery is taking longer than she hoped.

‘Her medical team continues to evaluate and treat the condition.’

Cardi B slams inflation: Rapper says grocery prices have tripled and is outraged lettuce now cost $7

Cardi B has slammed President Biden for soaring inflation that has, she says, seen grocery prices triple and a lettuce rise to $7.

While the wealthy rapper does not specifically name the President, she angrily demands ‘anybody that is responsible’ to bring prices down immediately.

The rapper, 30, revealed on Wednesday that she budgets every week to avoid going broke despite her $62 million net worth.

She urged officials to address the crisis, especially for the middle and lower class who might not be able to afford the soaring prices.

‘When I go to the f***** supermarket… I’m seeing that everything tripled up – that like lettuce was like $2 a couple of months ago and now it’s like f****** $7,’ the rapper said in a video posted to Twitter.

‘And I have a big platform, so I do want anybody that is responsible for these f****** prices to put that s*** the f*** down.’

Cardi B, 30, slammed ‘anybody that is responsible’ for the rising cost of living. The rapper posted a video onto Twitter claiming lettuce is now up to $7

Cardi acknowledged that she could either keep silent or speak up while arguing the price to buy groceries is more than eating out.

‘Of course I’m going to say something. The f****. Because if I think that s*** is crazy, I can only imagine what middle class people or people in the hood is m***** f***** thinking, so yes I’m going to say something.’

Some people argued that the rapper shouldn’t be complaining about inflation since she is a millionaire.

But the Grammy winner who is no stranger to indulging in the finer things in life, including $10,000 Hermès handbags, quickly addressed the contentious comments and claimed that managing money helps to ensure the longevity of wealth.

‘Let me tell you something, when I be complaining about food and all y’all m***** f***** be like “ain’t you rich why you complaining about lettuce? Why you complaining about this?” That just goes to show me when you become successful – when you have money – you’re going to f***** go broke soon because y’all not budgeting.

Cardi furiously opened up about her own money management techniques and how she needs to know exactly what it is being spent on.

‘I got a summary of the money that is being spent in my home every week, so when I’m starting to see that like groceries is like tripling up, it’s like “ay yo, what the f*** is going on.’ I want to see for myself what the f*** s*** is being spent on.’

The rapper owns a luxurious 22,000 square foot mansion in Atlanta, Georiga with her husband Offset. The two share two children, Wave Set, one, and Kulture, four.

Offset is also father to sons Jordan, 12, and Kody, seven, and daughter Kalea Marie, seven, from prior relationships.

Their $5.8 million dream home has 5 bedroom with 7 bathrooms and 4 half bathrooms. The property is completed with an underground shooting range and wine cellar.

She argued that something has to be done to help the middle and lower class, especially if she is noticing a dent in her $62 million net-worth

The Grammy winner is known to use her platform to bring awareness of social issues and has previously spoken out about inflation

Back in September, Cardi shared her outrage over the ‘unbearable’ cost of living and the hot housing market.

She admitted that she has to financially help her family and friends and questioned how others survive.

Voicing her thoughts, she exclaimed: ‘There’s no m************ inventory when it comes to homes. Nobody’s gonna try to sell their f****** homes.

‘I was looking at some areas. The way that the prices soar up… like how are people surviving? I want to know.

‘My family and my friends, they’re so grateful to have me, but it’s just like, what happens to people who don’t have a me?’

The rapper appears to enjoy the finer items in life, especially luxury handbags. But it appears she doesn’t let her wealth get in the way of speaking out for other people.

Cardi has history in commenting on politics, famously getting into an online war of words with  Candace Owens back in 2020, after the conservative commentator called the Grammy-winning rapper ‘illiterate’ and an ‘embarrassment’ to black people.

The feud began when Owens shared a clip of her appearance on The Ben Shapiro Show, in which she slammed then-Democratic nominee Joe Biden for taking part in an interview with Cardi for Elle.

Owens said it was ‘one of the biggest insults’ to black voters that Biden decided to do the interview with an ‘illiterate rapper’, rather than someone who could ask the ‘tough questions’.

The Republican went on to say that Biden thinks ‘black people are stupid’ and likened his interview with Cardi B to Donald Trump being interviewed by Justin Bieber.

Candace Owens, a conservative political commentator, harshly criticized Cardi B’s Grammy performance

Cardi caught wind of Owens’ comments and hit back at her in a video on Instagram, in which she insisted Biden decided to sit down with her because of her wide-ranging influence.

‘It’s not a secret I use my platform to encourage people to vote,’ Cardi, who previously endorsed Bernie Sanders said during the video.

‘I have millions of followers. I pay millions in taxes. I have the Number One song in this country, I have the Number One song in the United Kingdom, I have the Number One song in Australia, I have the Number One song in New Zealand.

‘Just like I can make millions of people pop their p****y,’ she said of her hit-single WAP, ‘I can make millions of people go out and vote.’

Cardi previously said she used to talk more openly about politics but halted when she was continuously ‘attacked’ by conservatives, according to Billboard.

One person on Twitter questioned why she stopped being vocal in 2021.

‘I was tired of getting bullied by the republicans and also getting bashed by the same people I was standing up for,’ she wrote in response.

Cardi continues to voice her opinion and previously spoke out about Russia and Ukraine before they officially went to war in February.

At the time, she was asked on Twitter what she ‘thinks about the whole Russia thing.’

Insisting her phone wasn’t hacked, Cardi told fans ‘I feel like if I don’t say the right things I might get killed’ before urging world leaders to ‘stop tripping on power.’

The rapper shared a tweet in response to the fan question about Russia, writing: ‘Wish these world leaders stop tripping about power and really think about whose really getting affected (citizens) besides the whole world is in a crisis. War, sanctions, invasions should be the last thing these leaders should worry about.’

After another fan wrote ‘okay, pass Cardi her phone back now,’ she jumped on a video to insist her ‘phone is not hacked, it’s really me.’

‘I actually wanna say a lot of things but I’m just gonna mind my business because sometimes I feel like I have such a big platform that if I don’t say the right things I might get killed,’ she explained.

‘But I’m really not on Nato’s side, I’m not on Russia’s side, I’m actually on the citizens side because at the end of the day the world is having a crisis right now,’ Cardi continued.

‘There’s inflation not only in America but everywhere in the world. It’s really hard to get the economy back up. There is so much shipments backed up.’

The consumer price index rose at the fastest rate in 40 years earlier in 2022

The Fed rapidly raised interest rates in 2022 to fight inflation, increasing recession risks

While inflation came down slightly in the later months of 2022, the U.S. saw record-high rates earlier in the year.

In November, inflation in the US came in at 7.1 percent. The number, still high, marked the fifth-straight month of shrinking annual increases.

The Wall Street Journal survey of 23 primary dealers, the large financial firms that do business directly with the Federal Reserve, found a majority expect a recession in the coming year.

It follows the Fed’s rapid rate hikes designed to battle soaring inflation last year, which saw the benchmark rate rise from near zero in March to a range of 4.25 percent to 4.5 percent by the end of the year.

The central bank forecasts that will reach a range of 5 percent to 5.25 percent by the end of 2023. Its forecast doesn’t call for a rate cut before 2024.

The Fed policy rate is now at its highest level since prior to the 2008 recession, as the central bank attempts to bring inflation down without triggering an economic downturn.

By the Fed’s preferred measure, inflation is still running nearly three times its 2 percent goal, having risen earlier in 2022 at its fastest pace in 40 years.

President Joe Biden signed Inflation Reduction Act into law in August in low-key ceremony

Biden signed the $430 billion Inflation Reduction Act in August to combat rising prices.

But Republicans argued the legislation would lead to higher energy prices, higher taxes for the middle class, and, potentially, more audits from the Internal Revenue Service.

The act includes incentives for the clean energy industry, permits Medicare to negotiate lower drug prices for the elderly, seeks to ensure corporations and wealthy people pay their taxes through enhanced IRS resources, and aims to combat inflation by reducing the federal deficit.

Biden argued he and the Democrats have helped steer the economy back to more solid ground.

The president originally wanted to pass his trillion-dollar social welfare bill known as ‘Build Back Better.’ But it died a legislative death when moderate Democratic Senator Joe Manchin refused to support it, citing concerns it would raise the deficit.

Manchin signed onto the Inflation Reduction Act after months of negotiations.

Russia halts Ukraine Black Sea grain exports, Biden outraged

  • Russia halts participation in UN grain deal
  • Move comes after drone attacks on Crimea
  • Russia says British personnel helped drone attack
  • Ukraine says Russia invents attacks
  • Biden says move is outrageous

Oct 29 (Reuters) – Russia on Saturday suspended participation in a U.N.-brokered Black Sea grain deal after what it said was a major Ukrainian drone attack on its fleet in Crimea, dealing a blow to attempts to ease the global food crisis.

U.S. President Joe Biden denounced the move as “purely outrageous” and said it would increase starvation.

Russia’s defence ministry said Ukraine attacked the Black Sea Fleet near Sevastopol on the annexed Crimean peninsula with 16 drones early on Saturday, and that British navy “specialists” had helped coordinate the “terrorist” attack.

The suspension will cut Ukrainian grain exports from its crucial Black Sea ports.

“There’s no merit to what they’re doing. The U.N. negotiated that deal and that should be the end of it,” Biden told reporters in his home state of Delaware.

The deal allows shipments of grain from Ukraine, one of the world’s largest exporters, that the Russian invasion had halted.

Russia told U.N. Secretary General Antonio Guterres in a letter, seen by Reuters, that it was suspending the deal for an “indefinite term” because it could not “guarantee safety of civilian ships” travelling under the pact.

Russia has also asked the U.N. Security Council to meet on Monday on the attack, Russia’s Deputy U.N. Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy wrote on Twitter.

Britain on Saturday said Russia’s claims, including that British navy personnel blew up the Nord Stream pipelines last month, were false and aimed at distracting attention from Russian military failures.

Russia said it had repelled the attack but that the ships targeted were involved in ensuring the grain corridor out of Ukraine’s Black Sea ports.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said what he called Russia’s nonsensical move required a strong international response from the U.N. and the Group of 20 major economies.

“This is a completely transparent attempt by Russia to return to the threat of large-scale famine for Africa, for Asia,” Zelenskiy said in a video address, adding that Russia should be kicked out of the G20.

Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Moscow was using a false pretext to sink the deal.

“I call on all states to demand Russia to stop its hunger games and recommit to its obligations,” Kuleba said.

In a statement, the European Union said “all parties must refrain from any unilateral action that would imperil” a deal it described as a critical humanitarian effort.

‘HUNGER GAMES’

Since Russia and Ukraine signed the U.N.-backed Black Sea Grain Initiative in Turkey on July 22, more than 9 million tonnes of corn, wheat, sunflower products, barley, rapeseed and soya have been exported.

But ahead of the Nov. 19 expiry of the deal, Russia had repeatedly said that there are serious problems with it. Ukraine complained Moscow had blocked almost 200 ships from picking up grain cargoes.

The United Nations is in contact with Russian authorities about the situation, a U.N. spokesman said.

United Nations aid chief Martin Griffiths said only on Wednesday that he was “relatively optimistic” that the deal would be extended beyond mid-November.

“Although the prices in the Western markets were reduced, Russia did not gain anything from this agreement,” said Turan Oguz, a Turkish defence analyst. “I think the main reason for Russia’s withdrawal is Western indifference towards Russia.”

Just 24 hours before Russia’s move, a spokesman for U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres had appealed to the parties to renew the pact.

Russian Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev said Russia was ready to supply up to 500,000 tonnes of grain to poor countries in the next four months for free, with assistance from Turkey, and supplant supplies of Ukrainian grains.

“The Russian Federation is fully prepared to replace Ukrainian grain and deliver supplies at affordable prices to all interested countries,” he said.

NWSL abuse report: Fans are outraged and players are exhausted after damning women’s soccer abuse report. Here’s what’s next

CNN
 —

The United States Women’s National Team play England in a friendly at Wembley on Friday. But as the world champion takes on the European champion, back in the US, women’s professional soccer is reeling from an independent investigation that found systemic abuse and misconduct within the sport.

Players have been described as “horrified and heartbroken and frustrated and exhausted,” as harrowing details emerge from the report, according to Becky Sauerbrunn, one of the stalwarts of the US women’s national soccer team.

“It’s hard,” midfielder Lindsey Horan said Wednesday at a media availability in London. “We’re angry. We’re pissed off and personally I feel like in a weird spot just because you know, I learned new things in this investigation that I didn’t know before and I wanted to wait and read it for myself and to be a part of an organization that was in this is really hard for me.”

“This investigation came forward and obviously we’re thankful for that, but it took way too long. This whole thing was prolonged incredibly, and I sit here and I’m like, it’s not done. This is all over the world.”

US Women’s National Team (USWNT) star Megan Rapinoe reiterated that women soccer players are angry and exhausted, telling a press conference Thursday: “Those people are in positions that have responsibilities and they didn’t fulfill those responsibilities. They didn’t protect the players at all amidst year, after year, after year. I feel like it’s impossible to overstate that every single year someone said something about multiple coaches in the league about multiple different environments,” she said.

“None of those people have shown they deserve to be around this beautiful game.”

United States Women’s National Team defender Crystal Dunn added she hoped the report will be the turning point for the sport.

“I think this report coming out was kind of the nail in the coffin,” Dunn said at a press conference in London on Wednesday. “It’s going to allow a lot of accountability that hasn’t really taken place and I think I am quite hopeful that the healing phase can now really take place.”

The report, led by former acting attorney general Sally Q. Yates, was based on more than 200 interviews and revealed the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) under the US Soccer Federation (USSF) failed to provide a safe environment for players.

US Soccer initiated its investigation a year ago by hiring Yates and the legal firm King and Spalding to review allegations, conduct interviews, and recommend solutions.

The federation says it gave Yates and the firm full autonomy and access in order to produce a complete, independent report.

Last year the 12-team NWSL was thrown into chaos following a report by The Athletic detailing allegations of sexual coercion and misconduct against Paul Riley, who coached three NWSL franchises over eight seasons.

He was fired by the North Carolina Courage after The Athletic cited players on the record alleging that for years, Riley used his influence and power to sexually harass players and in one incident, coerce a player into having sex with him.

Riley denied the accusations in the report. CNN has not been able to reach Riley for comment.

By the end of the season, “half of the league’s teams had parted ways” with their coaches after player complaints, the Yates report notes.

The Yates report features submitted first-hand accounts from players who describe alleged abuses from head coaches as well as team management.

Monday’s report states that sexual misconduct and abuse was far more widespread than just one coach or incident, but centers on allegations of sexual misconduct by coaches Riley, Rory Dames and Christy Holly, and the alleged failure of executives to investigate or act.The report further states that while their findings focus on the three named coaches, the three were “not the only coaches who mistreated players.”

Paul Riley was fired by the North Carolina Courage after The Athletic cited players on the record alleging that for years, Riley used his influence and power to sexually harass players and in one incident, coerce a player into having sex with him.

“Paul Riley’s abuse was prolonged and wide-ranging. It spanned multiple leagues, teams, and players. It included emotional misconduct, abuse of power, and sexual misconduct,” the report says. Before coaching the Courage, Riley had coached two other NWSL teams – the Portland Thorns and the Western New York Flash.

Investigators found that Riley’s conduct was “generally ignored or accepted” until The Athletic reports emerged.

The report corroborated accounts made by players to The Athletic, and “found evidence that they were not alone.”

The report found that in 2015, a player reported Riley to the Portland Thorns and the league for sexual misconduct.

After a one-week investigation, the Thorns terminated him citing “violations of several provisions of Riley’s employment contract for cause,” including “gross negligence or wilful misconduct” in performing his duties, Yates found, citing a letter from Thorns’ general manager.

The Thorns did not make this information public, the Yates report found, instead saying that Riley would “not be retained” for the 2016 season and thanked him for his service. Soon afterwards, Riley took another coaching job in the league.

In response to The Athletic’s 2021 reporting, Riley responded to a list of questions about his alleged conduct with an email where he stated that the majority of the allegations are “completely untrue.”

Christy Holly was fired from Racing Louisville after the team determined that he had engaged in long-term and egregious sexual misconduct against a player, according to the report – though at the time, the team merely said they fired him “for cause.”

Holly’s behavior, which allegedly began before his stint at Racing Louisville and carried on in the time he spent with the team, included unwanted sexual contact, coercive text messages, abuse of power, and retaliation, according to the report.

One player who trained with Holly during her off-season, Erin Simon, according to the report, said Holly sent her inappropriate texts, including photographs of his penis and a video of himself masturbating, and asked her to send sexual pictures and a video of herself back, which she said she felt “guilted” into doing, with Holly constantly telling her to “loosen up,” and insisting that having “fun” with him would improve her performance on the field.

When he was her coach at Racing Louisville, Simon said that Holly invited her to his house to watch game film, but instead showed her pornography, touched her, told her he wanted to have a threesome with her and another former player, and masturbated in front of her, forcing her to touch his penis, Yates’ report says.

According to the report, in another incident, after being called over by Holly to watch game footage together, Simon recalled that during this session, Holly told her he was going to touch her “for every pass [she] f**ked up.” Simon said that he pushed his hands down her pants and up her shirt as she tried to cross her legs and push him away, laughing in the meantime so as not to anger him.

CNN has been unable to reach Holly for comment.

According to the report, Holly admitted that he lost his job at Louisville due to his “unique” relationship with Erin Simon.

“He admitted to texting Simon, including sending and soliciting sexual photos. But he denied that any sexual conduct continued at Racing Louisville,” the report added.

Racing Louisville FC said in a statement Wednesday that the Yates report “served as a harsh reminder that appointing Christy Holly as Racing Louisville FC’s first coach was a mistake. We have learned from that mistake, and we apologize to Erin Simon, to our players past and present and to our fans,” they added.

They added “while our former coach was terminated within 24 hours of us being alerted to the behavior, we know that wasn’t enough and that we failed our locker room by creating a space where this behavior could occur.

“We have worked hard every day since then to ensure a safe environment that puts players in a position to succeed. This includes implementation of club-wide anonymous reporting services and a re-evaluated hiring process for staff.”

In the report, Yates noted that while Dames had a reputation for developing successful players and teams, he was “equally renowned for his tirades against the young girls who played for him.”

Dames was the former head coach for the Chicago Red Stars and is the current owner and former president and coach of the Eclipse Select Soccer Club, an elite youth soccer organization of boys’ and girls’ teams in suburban Chicago.

The report concludes that “Dames created a sexualized team environment and verbally and emotionally abused players and staff,” and allegedly “made inappropriate sexual and suggestive remarks to youth female players, asked about their boyfriends and sex lives, and sought information about their personal lives.”

One player’s allegations “recounted an instance where Dames gave her a ride after practice and ‘ask[ed] me all kinds of questions about sex … and wouldn’t take me home until I answered the questions,’” while another alleged Dames would “give girls tips on sex” and say things like: “you should be shaved and bare down there,” and “I hope you are giving your boyfriend a good time.”

A sports psychologist asserted that Dames created “a culture of fear” and was emotionally and verbally abusive, with players describing him as “condescending,” “manipulative,” “aggressive,” “insulting,” and “an intimidator,” the report noted.

Dames denies engaging in any misconduct as a coach, sexual or otherwise, according to his lawyer.

“He will address the misstatements of fact and false and defamatory statements in the report but his hands are tied at this time as U.S. Soccer referred all of the matters in the Yates’ report to SafeSport. Upon advice of counsel, Mr. Dames has declined to discuss these matters publicly in any detail,” said his lawyer.

The damning report found that verbal and emotional abuse and sexual misconduct – had become systemic in the NWSL, with many teams and coaches implicated, and with numerous victims.

“Abuse in the NWSL is rooted in a deeper culture in women’s soccer, beginning in youth leagues, that normalizes verbally abusive coaching and blurs boundaries between coaches and players.”

This, investigators noted, was worsened because league owners and the federation “did not institute the most basic of workplace protections.”

For most of the league’s existence, it has had no anti-harassment policy, no anti-retaliation policy and no anti-fraternization policy, the scathing report noted.

Meanwhile, for the most part, the league did not have ways for players to report inappropriate behavior, while teams generally lacked human resource departments and didn’t perform adequate checks when hiring coaches.

National Women’s Soccer League commissioner Jessica Berman issued a statement Tuesday saying the league is committed to “implementing reform and disciplinary action” based on the Yates report and the findings of the league and union’s ongoing investigation.

“We have asked the Joint Investigative Team to consider the recommendations set forth in the Yates Report when making their recommendations to the NWSL. Moreover, we have asked the Joint Investigative Team to review – and investigate as necessary – the findings in the Yates Report when concluding their report,” the NWSL added in a statement sent to CNN Thursday.

The report noted that high-ups in soccer failed to properly investigate or make public reports of abuse by coaches, allowing them to move to other teams.

“Teams, the League, and the Federation not only repeatedly failed to respond appropriately when confronted with player reports and evidence of abuse, they also failed to institute basic

measures to prevent and address it, even as some leaders privately acknowledged the need for workplace protections,” the report noted.

“As a result, abusive coaches moved from team to team, laundered by press releases thanking them for their service, and positive references from teams that minimized or even concealed misconduct. Those at the NWSL and USSF in a position to correct the record stayed silent.

“In general, teams, the NWSL, and USSF appear to have prioritized concerns of legal exposure to litigation by coaches—and the risk of drawing negative attention to the team or League—over player safety and well-being,” the report noted.

CNN has reached out to U.S. Soccer and the NWSL for comment on these specific allegations.

U.S. Soccer referred CNN to its previous statements, where it committed to addressing the report’s recommendations and said it would, among many steps, establish a new Office of Participant Safety to oversee U.S. Soccer’s conduct policies and reporting mechanisms; publish soccer records from SafeSport’s centralized disciplinary database to publicly identify individuals in the sport who have been disciplined, suspended or banned; and mandate a uniform minimum standard for background checks for all U.S. Soccer members at every level of the game.

In her report, Yates noted that some teams didn’t fully cooperate with investigators, despite releasing statements which suggested otherwise.

“The Portland Thorns interfered with our access to relevant witnesses and raised specious legal arguments in an attempt to impede our use of relevant documents,” the report noted.

“Racing Louisville FC refused to produce documents concerning Christy Holly and would not permit witnesses (even former employees) to answer relevant questions regarding Holly’s tenure, citing non-disclosure and non-disparagement agreements it signed with Holly.

“The Chicago Red Stars unnecessarily delayed the production of relevant documents over the course of nearly nine months,” investigators noted.

CNN has reached out to Racing Louisville FC, the Chicago Red Stars and the Portland Thorns for comment.

Portland Thorns FC and Portland Timbers’ president of soccer Gavin Wilkinson and president of business Mike Golub have been fired, the organization said on Wednesday, while Thorns and Timbers’ club owner Merritt Paulson announced on Tuesday that he was removing himself immediately from all team-related decision making until the findings of an the investigation being conducted by the NWSL and the players union (NWSLPA) are released.

In his Tuesday statement, Paulson apologized for his organization’s role in “a gross systemic failure to protect player safety and the missteps we made in 2015.”

The allegations have drawn fierce criticism from players.

Becky Sauerbrunn, one of the stalwarts of the US women’s national soccer team, said Tuesday that players are angry and want immediate changes.

“The players are not doing well. We are horrified and heartbroken and frustrated and exhausted. And we are really, really angry. We are angry that it took a third-party investigation,” Sauerbrunn stated at the beginning of a scheduled press conference on Tuesday.

The two-time World Cup winner added that “people in authority and decision-making positions have repeatedly failed to protect us.”

Sauerbrunn, a 10-year NWSL veteran who is in her third season with the Portland Thorns, continued, “Every owner and executive and US Soccer official who repeatedly failed the players and failed to protect the players, who have hidden behind legalities and have not participated fully in these investigations, should be gone.

“At the bare minimum, the recommendations that are in the Sally Yates report should be immediately implemented by US Soccer and by the league (NWSL).”

Fan groups for the Portland Thorns and the men’s team, the Portland Timbers, say they have suspended ties with the two teams in response to the revelations made about team management in the report.

In a statement posted on Twitter on Tuesday, the supporter groups known collectively as 107IST, said “While we were prepared for the worst, nothing prepared us for what was contained in the USSF/ Sally Yates report.

“It’s time to build a bonfire,” they said, calling for changes in key leadership positions.

The league said Monday it would review the findings, and that its own investigation in conjunction with the players’ union is ongoing. That investigation is expected to be released in November.

National Women’s Soccer League commissioner Jessica Berman issued a statement Tuesday updating the status of a joint investigation being conducted by the league and players union (NWSLPA) after owners of the Portland Thorns and Chicago Red Stars each said they would step back from their respective clubs.

Both franchises are named in the report. “The NWSL is supportive of the important steps taken by the Portland Thorns and Chicago Red Stars today,” Berman said in a written statement.

She also said the league is committed to “implementing reform and disciplinary action” based on the Yates report and the findings of the league and union’s ongoing investigation.

“While it will take time, we are fully prepared to take the necessary steps to protect the health and safety of our players, staff and other stakeholders in order to create the League that our players, fans, partners and staff deserve and expect,” she said.

PETA outraged by ‘Jackass Forever’ animal stunts, tells moviegoers to skip

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is urging moviegoers to skip “Jackass Forever” while calling for a criminal investigation into the film’s production.

PETA claims the goofy stuntmen in the box-office smash hit allegedly commit cruelty and abuse against the animals in some of the stunts.

The fourth installment of the “Jackass” franchise and its first sequel since “Jackass 3-D” in 2010 has already netted over $23,000,000 since its release on Friday, according to the IMDB’s Box Office Mojo database.

PETA cited several of the “Jackass” crew’s stunts that involved animals as particularly egregious.

One instance, they say, is a scene in which ringleader Johnny Knoxville provokes bees into stinging star Steve-O’s penis and another in which a scorpion is placed near actress Rachel Wolfson and “hit repeatedly” by comedian Eric Andre until the critter stings her.

Other problematic stunts involving animals for the animal activist group include provoking a bull into charging at Knoxville (from which he suffered a severe concussion) and placing a tarantula in an enclosure between two actors’ screaming faces.

“Jackass stunts are violent and vulgar, but if the talent is willing and the wounds are self-inflicted, that’s one thing—however, it’s quite another when animals are exploited, harassed, and harmed: That’s cruelty,” said PETA President Ingrid Newkirk in a statement.

PETA sent a letter to Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer and Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney Kimberly Abourezk in September after the trailer – which teased several animal-involved stunts – was released. The organization urged the offices to “investigate and take appropriate legal action against those involved in filming scenes depicting cruelty to animals in the movie Jackass Forever.”

The letter said that Paramount Pictures may have violated California animal cruelty laws – such as the state’s ban on animal fighting – in its production. The group said it fears the movie will inspire others to perform similar stunts, endangering animals.

“If Steve-O and Johnny Knoxville want to make a career out of nasty little boy fantasies, they’re entitled to, as long as they don’t stress, harm, poke, prod, scare, or bother animals who are used as living props for their idiocy,” said a statement from PETA SVP Lisa Lange, obtained by Deadline.

“PETA is reminding city and county prosecutors that no one is above the law and that while the rest of the world wants to save bees and recognizes animals as sentient individuals, these jackasses exploit and abuse them for fun.”
