Conservatives blast Musk critics saying billionaires shouldn’t run media outlets: ‘Stop attacking Bezos’

Liberals with verified Twitter accounts flooded the social media platform to take issue with the idea of billionaires purchasing social media companies, prompting their conservative critics to point out that many Democrats have been silent about similar billionaire purchases in the past.
“Elon Musk buying twitter is bad,” former Democratic congressional candidate Nina Turner tweeted this week. “Billionaires owning media outlets is bad. Billionaires buying politicians is bad. We wonder why ‘the rich get richer while the poor get poorer’ remains true?”
“When multi-billionaires take control of our most vital platforms for communication, it’s not a win for free speech. It’s a win for oligarchy,” former Clinton administration labor secretary Robert Reich posted on Thursday.
Conservatives on social media responded to the tweets by pointing out that Democrats have supported the Washington Post being owned by billionaire Jeff Bezos and have been less critical about the wealth of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg and former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey.

Musk finalized his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter on Thursday and posted a letter to advertisers outlining his vision for the company.
“The reason I acquired Twitter is because it is important to the future of civilization to have a common digital town square, where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner, without resorting to violence,” Musk posted on Twitter. “There is currently great danger that social media will splinter into far right wing and far left wing echo chambers that generate more hate and divide our society.”

Musk added that the social media platform “cannot become a free-for-all hellscape” and that he will focus on adhering to the “laws of the land” while also fostering an environment that is “warm and welcoming to all.”
#WrongAsian: News outlets use wrong photo of Ali Wong’s husband in divorce stories
Both publications have since deleted their original tweets and replaced the photos. Yet their mistake provoked outrage, with people taking to Twitter to decry how the outlets got the #WrongAsian.
“Come on! Can we not ruin the news of Ali Wong’s divorce with Wrong Asian racism?” tweeted Phil Yu, a Korean American blogger and author.
Park is not the first Asian celebrity to be misidentified by the media. Last year, Letterboxd, a film review app, shared a photo of an actress it identified as Michelle Yeoh. It was actually Fala Chen, who also starred in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” In 2019, “Crazy Rich Asians” actor Ronny Chieng called out People magazine for confusing him and his wife, Hannah Pham, as Park and Jae W. Suh.
Twitter users shared their own stories of being misidentified. One Asian woman said she received the wrong diploma from her high school principal; an Asian man said he gets asked weekly if he “had just been in the night before or earlier that day.”
It’s those mix-ups that leave many people of color feeling interchangeable.
“It kind of makes you feel invisible, because they don’t know who you are even though you are putting in this hard work,” Nicholas Pilapil told The Washington Post in 2019 about getting misidentified by his co-workers.
On Wednesday, Parade apologized for the mistake.
“We understand how hurtful this photo mistake was and the impact it can have and we sincerely regret it,” the magazine posted on Twitter. “We would like to apologize to Ali Wong, Justin Hakuta, Randall Park and everyone who may have been hurt by our error. We will implement stronger measures going forward to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”
The anger over the blunder eclipsed the news of Wong’s separation — which reverberated deeply, considering the comedian has often gushed about her husband.
Wong met Hakuta in 2010 during a friend’s wedding reception. The two got married four years later and welcomed daughters Mari and Nikki in 2015 and 2017, respectively. Her journey through marriage and motherhood is often the inspiration for her jokes.
In her 2016 Netflix special, “Baby Cobra,” a heavily pregnant Wong — clad in her signature body-con mini dress — quipped that she hatched the plan to “trap” Hakuta after learning he was attending Harvard Business School. Two years later, in the “Hard Knock Wife” special, a once-again expecting Wong jested about the prenuptial agreement Hakuta’s parents insisted she sign. (The joke’s on them, she said, because she’s the family’s breadwinner.)
While Wong’s jokes can be sexually explicit and crude, they are laced with honesty about the difficulties of balancing a career with marriage and motherhood. Often, she has highlighted the unequal expectations that are placed on women.
“My husband occasionally changes diapers, and when people hear that [mimics explosion sound] — ‘Oh my god,’ confetti everywhere,” she said in “Hard Knock Wife.” “ ‘I cannot believe that your husband changes diapers. What a doting modern father. Lucky you!’ When my baby girl was first born, I would do skin-on-skin contact every day to bond with her. She [pooped] on my chest. Where’s my confetti at?”
During her latest Netflix installment, “Don Wong,” which premiered in February, the comedian opened the show by saying she thinks about cheating on Hakuta “every five minutes.” Later in the stand-up routine, focused on the concept of monogamy and the double standards within it, she said she was still very much in love with her husband.
Explaining that Hakuta is her type, she said: “I like dudes who look as close to Keanu Reeves as possible.”

ROSEMONT, Ill. (WLS) — Shoppers and employees returned to The Rosemont Fashion Outlets of Chicago following a shooting that killed one person and injured at least one other on Friday evening.
Police said the shooting appears to be targeted between the offender and Joel Valdes, 20, who was shot at the mall and died at the hospital. He was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
“It makes you think twice about going out. It’s not safe anywhere so you have to be careful everywhere you go, every time,” said shopper Juan Marcial. “It makes you think twice about going out. It’s not safe anywhere, so you have to be careful everywhere you go, every time.”
Rosemont police said the shooter got away in a maroon Honda with others inside. Police have located the owner of the car and are now questioning them as a person of interest.
A 15-year-old girl, discovered inside a bathroom near the food court, was also shot in the wrist, police said. Her condition has since stabilized.
The two shooting victims were rushed to local hospitals and were initially reported to be in critical condition.
“My immediate thought was, like, ‘How do we get people to safety?’ So, we just rushed everybody to the back and, kind of, waited it out.,” said Jay who returned to work at the mall Saturday.
Another woman who did not want to be identified said “We ran until we reached this parking lot, literally, running down the ramp of the parking lot.”

Others stayed hidden until police gave an all clear.
“We found this exit door and we saw other people running outside so we followed them because we’re like, we’re not going to get stuck in here, ya know,” said Iman Mehmood.
One firearm was recovered from the scene and is being processed as evidence, police said.
“I can only hope and pray that he’s in a better place, no matter what it is you guys believe in – just that he’s at rest. For the one recovering, I hope it’s a smooth, easy recovery. And, I hope that someone can answer for this,” said Jay.
The offender is described as a man in his mid-twenties with a mask covering his face, police said.
The mall has been released back to management, police said. Extra law enforcement presence will be in and around the area when the mall opens back up, police said.
About 10 a.m. Saturday, seemingly confused and frustrated shoppers arrived to find the mall was not open. Later Saturday morning, some shoppers left exclaiming “We don’t know what is going on!”
The mall reopened just after noon.

ROSEMONT, Ill. (WLS) — Police have located a person of interest in the Rosemont outlet mall shooting that killed one person an injured at least one other on Friday evening, officials said.
Rosemont police said an “isolated and targeted” shooting took place near the food court inside Fashion Outlets of Chicago just after 7 p.m.
Police said the shooting appears to be targeted between the offender and Joel Valdes, 20, who was shot at the mall and died at the hospital. He was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
A 15-year-old girl, discovered inside a bathroom near the food court, was also shot in the wrist, police said. Her condition has since stabilized.
Police said there may have been a third shooting victim who left the area.

The offender is described as a man in his mid-twenties with a mask covering his face, police said. The offender left the area in a Maroon 2008 Honda with other unknown people. That vehicle was later located out of town along with its owner, who is currently being questioned regarding their involvement in the shooting and is being considered a person of interest.
Witnesses inside the mall said they heard three to five shots fired and saw people rushing for the exit.

“We heard four gunshots rapidly and within minutes, we just ran,” Gucci store employee Maria Salgado said.
“I noticed that a stroller was ah, had fell over, and it was a kid’s bottle laid out next to the stroller, it was a little girl’s stroller,” witness Stringer Harris said. “And that just told me how serious this matter was. As far as, like, it goes from zero to 60 just that quick. You know, you’re walking down with your family having a good time and shots go off.”
Police said the area is now safe, but Rosemont officers were going from store to store to get shoppers and employees out.
The mall has been released back to management, police said.

2 Suspects Sought After Man Killed, Teen Injured in Fashion Outlets of Chicago Shooting – NBC Chicago
Police were looking for two suspected gunman Friday night following a shooting that left one person dead and a second person injured at the Fashion Outlets of Chicago, authorities said.
The shooting occurred shortly after 7 p.m., when the Rosemont Department of Public Safety received several 911 calls in regard to shots fired at the popular suburban shopping center.
One of the victims, a man in his 20s, was transported to the hospital where he was initially listed in critical condition, but later died as a result of his injuries, said Rosemont Public Safety Sgt. Joe Balogh. A second victim, a 15-year-old girl, was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.
A third person may have been shot and then fled the scene, according to Balogh, but that remained unclear as of late Friday night.
Several witnesses recounted hearing shots and seeing crowds of people running in the chaotic moments that followed.
Police were looking for two male suspects who left the area in a red vehicle following the shooting and were in the process of reviewing surveillance video late Friday to learn more about those involved.
The mall remained an active crime scene as multiple areas were taped off while police continued their investigation. The Fashion Outlets of Chicago will remain closed for the “immediate future,” Rosemont officials said. It wasn’t immediately clear when the mall will reopen.
A reunification site was set up at the Murray Bros. Caddyshack Restaurant, 9546 Balmoral Ave. for those who were separated from loved ones.
The Rosemont Department of Public Safety is asking those who witnessed the shooting to come forward. Anyone with information can reach Rosemont authorities at 847-823-1134.
Citadel Outlets in Commerce open early for Black Friday shopping
COMMERCE, Calif. (KABC) — The Citadel Outlets opened on Thanksgiving for Black Friday shopping, the first time since the start of the pandemic that they opened early for the holiday tradition.
“We are hoping we return to some return normalcy, that we have a big crowd, that people are happy to be back,” said outlets manager David Blagg.
According to Blagg, the outlets did not open early for Black Friday shopping in 2020 – which usually happens on Thanksgiving night.
This year, they opened the gates to the property at 4 p.m. to let shoppers in, but the stores opened at 8 p.m.
Lines were long as shoppers waited for the chance to buy merchandise at discounted prices and thousands of people showed up to the mall.
In light of recent flash mob thefts that have been going on across California, Blagg said they’re taking a different approach with security this year.
“We do have some new security measures that are in place,” said Blagg. “Let’s just say that within a minute to two minutes of an alarm being sounded, needing to close the centers as far as access in or out we are very capable of doing that,” said Blagg.
