Mets outfielder hauls in possible catch of the year in thrilling win over Dodgers

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!

The New York Mets took home a huge 2-1 win against MLB’s top dog in the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Yes, Jacob deGrom was on the mound, but even the best need a little bit of help sometimes.

In the seventh inning, Justin Turner turned on an 0-1, 100 mph fastball and drove it deep into center field. But Brandon Nimmo had a great jump, eye-balling it the whole way.

Out of desperation, he leaped up, robbed Turner of a game-tying home run, and crashed into the wall before letting out an emphatic yell.

“I knew it was hit well off the bat, and so, my concern was just getting back to the fence as quick as I could…” Nimmo told reporters after the game. “The timing was right on it, and everything worked out just perfectly.”

Nimmo received a standing ovation after the play, got plenty of high-fives from teammates, and got a huge hand even when he came back up for his next at-bat.

Nimmo’s not afraid to admit that he’s pretty hyped up about the catch.

“I have to start calming down, because I do have to sleep at some point tonight,” he added.

“I’m still really ecstatic about it. It was one of the best plays I’ve ever made.”

The robbery preserved what was already a great start for deGrom, but the box score looks much better thanks to Nimmo. DeGrom tossed seven innings of one-run ball, striking out nine.

After the robbery, Edwin Diaz came in to close the door with the help of Timmy Trumpet, the artist who plays the trumpets in his now viral walk-out song, “Narco.”

The Mets lead the NL East over the Atlanta Braves by three games.

Juan Soto makes Padres debut: Star outfielder records one hit, but teammates do the heavy lifting in win

Just over 24 hours since a trade that altered the landscape of Major League Baseball, the new-look San Diego Padres were in action in front of their fans. Newly-acquired Josh Bell and Brandon Drury were both in the lineup, but, obviously, the main course here — at least before the game started — was the Padres debut of 23-year-old superstar Juan Soto.

Soto slotted second in the lineup, hitting in front of MVP candidate Manny Machado and new cleanup man Bell.

The Padres would send their fans home extremely happy with a 9-1 win. Soto wasn’t the star of the show at the plate and instead, it was the rest of the Padres’ lineup that showed how fearsome it can be around him. From before the game started through the end, it was a raucous event in San Diego. The announced attendance was 44,652, which is a sellout.

Eyewitness accounts pegged the atmosphere as “electric” and the Padres broadcasters noted multiple times that it’s probably the most amped they’ve ever seen Petco Park. This was before the game even started.

Here’s Soto heading out to right field for his first inning with the team.

He came to the plate with one out in the bottom of the first and the entire crowd was standing. Many fans could be seen holding their phones to record the occasion. When Rockies pitcher Chad Kuhl ran the count to 3-0, he was showered with boos before the Padres faithful shifted to chants of “SOTO! SOTO! SOTO!”

Soto surely had the green light on the aforementioned 3-0, but ball four wasn’t even close. His first plate appearance with the Padres was a walk.

Of course, that walk ended up as the catalyst for a huge inning. Following the Soto walk, Machado doubled, Bell walked, Jake Cronenworth was hit with a pitch and then Drury, in his very first pitch as a Padre, hit a grand slam:

That inning set the tone for the rest of the game. Machado would go 3 for 4 with a home run and double. Cronenworth homered and drove home three runs. Trent Grisham had an RBI double. Bell was on base twice and scored both times.

Soto lined a single to right field for his first hit as a Padre in the bottom of the eighth.

He ended up 1 for 3 with two walks and a run scored. Even if he was overshadowed, that’s a very good debut.

On the mound, Padres lefty Blake Snell kept his nice little run going. In July, Snell went 3-0 with a 2.81 ERA and 40 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings. On Wednesday, he allowed just one run on four hits in six innings while striking out nine without issuing a walk. He got into a bit of trouble in the third, but otherwise dominated.

Soto didn’t star in the game, but he didn’t need to. That’s the beautiful thing about baseball. He had a perfectly solid game while Machado, Cronenworth and Drury went nuts. There will be games where Soto is the star all the same. The point of acquiring Soto, Bell and Drury was to make the lineup as fearsome as possible. For the first day with the new-look lineup, it was mission accomplished.

The Padres have now won five straight games and get the Rockies at home again in a matinee on Thursday before heading to L.A. for a three-game series against the first-place Dodgers.

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout (back spasms) elects to skip Tuesday’s MLB All-Star Game

Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout, sidelined the last four games with back spasms, will not play in Tuesday’s All-Star Game in Los Angeles.

The three-time American League MVP will be replaced on the All-Star roster by Ty France of the Seattle Mariners, and Byron Buxton of the Minnesota Twins has been moved into the starting lineup.

Trout was in the Angels’ posted pregame lineup as the center fielder on Saturday night, but was removed about three minutes before the first pitch against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Trout said afterward that his back felt wrong while swinging in the cage before the game. The Angels had a day off on Sunday.

Trout said after Saturday’s game that he would sleep on it before deciding whether to bow out of the All-Star Game. On Sunday afternoon, Major League Baseball made his decision official with an announcement on social media.

Trout is batting .270 with 24 homers and 51 RBIs in 79 games this season, although he has just one multihit game and six total RBIs in the past three weeks.

France, heading into Sunday’s series finale vs. the Texas Rangers, led the Mariners with a .306 batting average, 95 hits and a .396 on-base percentage.

Colorado Rockies investigating after fan uses racial slur during Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson’s at-bat

The Colorado Rockies said they are investigating after a racial slur was used by a fan during an at-bat by Miami Marlins outfielder Lewis Brinson, who is Black, on Sunday at Coors Field.

Microphones on the Bally Sports Florida telecast picked up a fan yelling the N-word multiple times after the second pitch during Brinson’s at-bat in the ninth inning of the Rockies’ 13-8 win.

“The Colorado Rockies are disgusted at the racial slur by a fan directed at the Marlins’ Lewis Brinson during the ninth inning of today’s game,” the team said in a statement after the game. “Although the subject was not identified prior to the end of the game, the Rockies are still investigating this incident.

“The Rockies have zero tolerance for any form of racism or discrimination, and any fan using derogatory language of any kind will be ejected and banned from Coors Field.”

Marlins spokesman Jason Latimer told The Associated Press that the team was aware of the incident.

“Neither Lewis, nor any other Marlins on the field or in the dugout, heard what was shouted,” Latimer told The AP via text message. “We brought the matter to the attention of the Rockies. How the matter is being handled, I would have to defer to them.”

Fans had started to fill the lower deck of Coors Field in the late innings, moving closer for a postgame concert that was part of a Faith Day celebration.

Team officials weren’t able to debrief ushers in the area where the fan shouted the slur until after the concert ended about an hour later.

Brinson is in the midst of his fourth season with the Marlins. The 27-year-old went 2-for-4 in Sunday’s game with 2 RBIs, and he’s batting .261 on the season.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Oakland A’s outfielder Ramon Laureano suspended 80 games for PED violation

Oakland Athletics outfielder Ramon Laureano was suspended 80 games without pay by Major League Baseball on Friday after testing positive for an anabolic steroid.

MLB said Laureano, a 27-year-old who is in his fourth season with the A’s, tested positive for nandrolone, a performance-enhancing drug. The suspension is effective immediately.

Laureano denied that he knowingly took the banned substance in a statement released by the players’ association and said he “was shocked” when he learned about the positive test.

“I have worked too hard and given too much to this sport to disrespect or cheat the game that I love,” he said in the statement. “I would never do anything to dishonor my family, teammates, and coaches or do anything to let down the many young ball players that look up to me.

“I take great care of my body and have an extremely regimented diet. Based on the minuscule amount that was briefly in my body, I’ve learned that it is likely that it was contamination of something I ingested.

“I have been educated about PEDs through the RBI program and Baseball Factory while growing up. I know I don’t need any of that to perform on the baseball field. All my athletic success has come from my hard work, focus and dedication to the game.”

The penalty came down just over four hours before the A’s were to begin a weekend home series against the Texas Rangers.

“The A’s were disappointed to learn of this suspension. We fully support MLB’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program and we will welcome Ramón back after the discipline has been served,” the A’s said in a statement.

Fellow A’s outfielder Starling Marte, acquired by Oakland in a trade July 28, was suspended 80 games by MLB for testing positive for the same substance in 2017 while he was the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Laureano is hitting .246 with 14 homers and 39 RBIs in 88 games this season. He has regularly made highlight-reel throws from center field to save runs.

Oakland, the reigning AL West champion having reached the playoffs in each of the past three seasons, is in second place behind the rival Houston Astros in the division race.

“I’d like to apologize for the distraction that this might cause my teammates, Billy Beane, David Forst, and the entire Oakland organization, community, and fan base,” Laureano said. “I am devastated. Anyone who truly knows me as a person knows how much I love the game and that I would never intentionally do something like this.”

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Starling Marte trade: Athletics acquire outfielder from Marlins for Jesús Luzardo, per report

The Oakland Athletics and Miami Marlins have agreed on a trade that will send outfielder Starling Marte and enough cash to cover his remaining salary to Oakland, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. (ESPN’s Jeff Passan added the financial details.) The A’s are sending left-hander Jesús Luzardo back to Miami, per Rosenthal.

Marte, an impending free agent, was recently featured by CBS Sports as the eighth-best potential trade candidate. Here’s what we wrote at the time:

The Miami Marlins have reportedly offered Starling Marte an extension worth something like $50 million over three or four years. That would seem too team-friendly to get a deal done, but perhaps the Marlins can close the gap between now and the deadline. If not, he’s going to make for an enticing rental. Marte has also been playing a good center field, meaning that he’s a legitimate all-around contributor.

The A’s will ostensibly use Marte in a corner-outfield position, with Ramón Laureano remaining in center and Mark Canha taking the other corner. The move figures to substantially cut into the playing time afforded to Stephen Piscotty and Seth Brown, as neither has performed nearly as well as Marte has so far this season. Marte had a .306/.407/.453 slash line (136 OPS+) in 63 games this season in Miami.

This is the third time Marte has been traded since the beginning of 2020. He went from the Pirates to the Diamondbacks in January 2020, and then was acquired by the Marlins at the 2020 trade deadline last August. This season he’s hitting

The A’s entered Wednesday with a 56-46 record on the season, good for a one-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the race for the second wild card spot.

Luzardo, 24 come September, isn’t far removed from being considered a top prospect. Alas, he’s had a rough season to date, accumulating a 6.87 ERA (59 ERA+) in 38 innings before being demoted to the minors. Luzardo made 15 starts in his Oakland career with another 16 appearances out of the bullpen. His struggles have continued at the Triple-A level in 2021, where he’s sporting a 6.52 ERA and a bloated walk rate (more than one every other inning) after eight outings.

Luzardo also continues to be subjected to questions about his durability. Despite being a professional since 2017, he’s thrown more than 100 innings in a season just once, with that coming in 2018. He missed time earlier this season after hurting his pinky while playing a video game. Still, if the Marlins can help Luzardo realize his past promise — and there’s no guarantee they can — then the risk will be worth the reward.

MLB rumors: Yankees sign reliever Justin Wilson; Mets add outfielder Kevin Pillar

We are fast approaching the start of spring training, and almost all of the big-name free agents are spoken for. That said, it’s still the offseason, and that means rumors can be found. We have found them and rounded them up for Monday. Here they are:

The Yankees have signed left-handed reliever Justin Wilson, per Sweeny Murti of WFAN.

Wilson, 33, spent the last two seasons with the Mets. In 68 appearances in Queens, he posted a 2.91 ERA (143 ERA+) and a 2.39 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Wilson, who pitched for the Yankees in 2015, relies primarily on two pitches: a mid-90s fastball and a cutter, a combination that has allowed him to suppress quality contact the past few years.

Wilson is the second notable addition the Yankees have made to their bullpen recently, joining right-hander Darren O’Day, whom the Yankees signed after moving Adam Ottavino in a trade with the Red Sox.

Mets add Pillar to outfield

The New York Mets have signed free-agent outfielder Kevin Pillar to a one-year deal, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Pillar, 32, will give the Mets more outfield depth for the 2021 MLB season. The veteran — who can play all three outfield positions — hit .288/.336/.462 with six home runs, 12 doubles and 26 RBI during the abbreviated 2020 season. Pillar began his 2020 season with the Red Sox  before he was traded at the deadline to the Rockies. Pillar has established himself as an elite defender during his eight-year MLB career, and although his numbers aren’t at their peak, he still boasts impressive defensive stats.

The Mets missed out on top free-agent center fielder George Springer this offseason, and the recent Pillar signing may signal that they may be out on free-agent center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. too. As things stand now, it looks like Pillar could take over in center, which would be a clear upgrade over Brandon Nimmo. Pillar’s played primarily in center and right field throughout his career. Then, they’d have Michael Conforto in right field and Dominic Smith in left. Or, the Mets could stick with Nimmo in left and shift Smith to the bench. They have flexibility with their outfielders.

New York also added outfielder Albert Almora Jr. this winter. Pillar joins Almora, Jose Martinez and Guillermo Heredia as the right-handed outfield options on the Mets 40-player roster, with Smith, Nimmo and Conforto as the left-handed outfielders.

All this to say, these moves don’t necessarily take them out of the running for Bradley Jr. They have been engaged in discussions with the longtime Red Sox outfielder, who entered the offseason ranked by CBS Sports as the 12th-best free agent available. Our own Mike Axisa recently listed the Mets as a good landing spot for JBJ.

Kipnis joins the Braves

Veteran infielder Jason Kipnis tweeted on Monday afternoon that he had signed with the Braves. The deal is a minor-league pact.

Kipnis, 34 in early April, spent last season with the Cubs. He hit .237/.341/.404 (101 OPS+) with three home runs in 135 trips to the plate. It was Kipnis’ finest offensive effort since 2016, as judged by OPS+.

Kipnis figures to compete for a bench spot with the Braves. As it stands, Atlanta is expected to carry backup catcher Alex Jackson, outfielder Ender Inciarte, and infielders Johan Camargo and Adrianza as its reserves.

Twins pick up Shoemaker

The Minnesota Twins have signed veteran starter Matt Shoemaker to a one-year, $2 million deal, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. The deal is pending a physical and allows Shoemaker to earn another $250,000 in performance bonuses, Passan adds.

Shoemaker, 34, could figure into the Twins rotation as a back-end starter. He’ll be facing competition from right-hander Randy Dobnak and lefty Devin Smeltzer for the No. 5 spot. In 2020, Shoemaker started six games (28 2/3 IP) and recorded a 4.71 ERA (94 ERA+) with 26 strikeouts and nine walks for Toronto.

Over Shoemaker’s last three seasons, he owns a 3.77 ERA to go along with a 23.5 percent strikeout rate and 7.9 percent walk rate in 88 1/3 innings in 18 starts. But, injuries (he’s already undergone surgeries for his forearm and knee) could keep him out of the rotation in 2021. He’s been limited to just six starts per year in the last three. The last time he reached 15 starts in a season came in 2016 with the Angels. The Twins also added free-agent left-hander J.A. Happ to their rotation this winter.

Red Sox sign Sawamura

The Red Sox have agreed to terms with Japanese reliever Hirokazu Sawamura on a two-year deal worth $3 million, per Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The contract includes an option that is said to be “conditional and complex,” but that would push the total value of the deal closer to $8 million.

Sawamura, who will turn 33 in April, made close to 400 appearances during his career in Nippon Professional Baseball. He departs with a 2.82 ERA and a 2.95 strikeout-to-walk ratio.

Ted Baarda of Baseball Info Solutions provided a Sawamura scouting report in December:

Sawamura throws a straight, mid 90s fastball that sits around 96 that he can locate well at the bottom of the zone. His primary secondary pitch is a low-mid 90s splitter, which has some late drop but doesn’t have a huge break due to the speed he throws it at. He does a good job of keeping the pitch down, either in or below the zone, and hitters regularly swing over it when it dips out of the zone. Splitters are difficult pitches to command, which is a factor contributing to Sawamura’s high walk rates.

Sawamura figures to compete for high-leverage work alongside Matt Barnes, Adam Ottavino, and Ryan Brasier.

The Padres have one of the busiest offseasons in the majors. That continued on Monday, with San Diego inking veteran reliever Keone Kela to a one-year deal, per MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Kela, 28 in mid-April, did not rank among CBS Sports’ top 60 free agents in the majors entering the winter. The reasons for his exclusion were straightforward: he had been limited by COVID-19 and injury to just two innings in 2020, and had been involved in too many off-the-field incidents in 2019 to merit inclusion.

Nonetheless, Kela has been an effective reliever when he’s been hearty and hale. In 231 career big-league appearances, he’s posted a 139 ERA+ and a 3.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Kela’s arsenal has largely consisted of just two pitches: a mid-90s fastball and a swing-and-miss breaking ball.

Kela is the second veteran reliever the Padres have added in the past week, joining former Braves closer Mark Melancon.

The Rockies announced on Monday that they had signed veteran first baseman C.J. Cron to a minor-league pact.

Cron, 31, entered the winter ranked as the 43rd-best free agent available. Here’s what we wrote at the time;

Cron played in just 13 games before he required season-ending knee surgery. He’s still one of the top first basemen on the market, a statement that says more about the paucity of good options available than it does about him. Cron is a serviceable option, mind you, one who can deliver 20-plus homers and an OPS+ in the 100-110 range. Alas, “serviceable” first basemen tend to change uniforms frequently. Cron sure has, as he’s played with four teams the past four years. Expect that to become five in five soon enough, and then six in six, and then ….

Cron figures to compete with another recent signing, Greg Bird, for playing time at first base.

The Brewers made a potential addition to their bullpen on Sunday, signing former All-Star closer Brad Boxberger to a minor-league deal, per ESPN.

Boxberger, 33 in May, appeared in 23 games with the Marlins last season, accumulating a 151 ERA+ and a 2.25 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 18 innings. Time hasn’t been too kind to Boxberger since he made the 2015 All-Star Game: even including his success in 2020, he’s compiled a 4.27 ERA and more than five walks per nine in his last 151 innings.

The Brewers have a largely flexible bullpen, as only Ray Black lacks options. That said, Milwaukee is certain to carry Josh Hader, Devin Williams, Brent Suter, and Freddy Peralta if healthy. Boxberger might be competing, then, with Justin Topa and/or J.P. Feyereisen for a spot in the Opening Day ‘pen.
