Eagles vs. Saints score, takeaways: New Orleans prevents Philly from clinching home-field advantage in NFC

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles will have one more chance to clinch home-field advantage in the NFC playoffs after failing to accomplish the task, thanks to a brutal 20-10 loss to the New Orleans Saints at Lincoln Financial Field. In what was arguably their worst offensive performance of the season, the Eagles couldn’t muster more than 10 points against the Saints defense with Jalen Hurts missing his second consecutive game.

Gardner Minshew sealed the Eagles’ fate by throwing an interception to Marshon Lattimore that was returned 12 yards for a touchdown with 5:10 to play. The Eagles, trailing 13-10, needed to go 91 yards for the win but the first giveaway for the team came at the worst possible time. Philadelphia never led in this one, going three-and-out on its first four possessions and allowing New Orleans to build a 13-point lead the Eagles couldn’t overcome.

The Saints took the lead on a 15-play, 75-yard drive to start the game that took 8:58 off the clock, capped by a Taysom Hill 1-yard touchdown run to put the New Orleans up 7-0. Wil Lutz hit 54- and 20-yard field goals to extend the lead to 13-0 prior to the half. The Saints hung on from there, stopping the Eagles on a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak by Minshew in the fourth quarter and Lattimore intercepting Minshew in the fourth quarter to hang on for the victory.

Philadelphia will have to win in Week 18 against the New York Giants, who clinched a playoff spot and the No. 6 seed Sunday, to claim the NFC East crown and home-field advantage for the playoffs. New Orleans kept its shot for the NFC South alive with the win, but the Saints were eliminated from playoff contention with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beating the Carolina Panthers Sunday.

Why the Saints won

New Orleans defense came to play against Philadelphia, holding the Eagles offense to a season-low 10 points and just 313 yards in the loss. The defense kept the Eagles offense in check by getting pressure on Gardner Minshew, only pressuring him 12 times but getting six sacks. Cameron Jordan had four pressures and three sacks in the win, taking advantage of an Eagles offensive line that didn’t have Lane Johnson.

The offense built enough of a lead early to hold on at the end, with Marshon Lattimore sealing the victory with an interception return for a touchdown off Minshew in the fourth quarter. The Saints defense has allowed just 38 points in the last three quarters.

Why the Eagles lost

Philadelphia’s offense clearly misses Jalen Hurts, as the Eagles had just one offensive touchdown in the loss. Minshew couldn’t convert a fourth-and-1 quarterback sneak with 8:35 left and threw an interception return for a touchdown on the next possession to seal the win for New Orleans. The Eagles started its first four possessions with three-and-outs, very uncharacteristic for the highest-scoring offense in football heading into Week 17. They ran the ball just twice in those possessions and had just 21 yards as the Saints built a 13-0 lead.

The Eagles were off all day, but still had a chance to win it in the fourth quarter. They’ll get Hurts back next week in a must-win game for home-field advantage.

Turning point

The Eagles were at midfield with 8:35 left in a 13-10 game and facing a fourth-and-1 in a 13-10 game. With the momentum going, Philadelphia called Minshew’s number to get the first down on a quarterback sneak — but he failed to convert. Jalen Hurts was 27 of 30 on quarterback sneaks this season while Minshew was 1 of 2 — including Sunday’s failed attempt.

Philadelphia didn’t have Hurts, but tried the sneak anyway. That showcases how valuable he is to an offense.

Play of the game

Marshon Lattimore’s interception off Gardner Minshew was the takeaway the Saints needed to steal the victory in Philadelphia. With 5:31 left in a 13-10 game, Lattimore easily read Minshew’s slant route to A.J. Brown and snatched the ball before it even got there — ending the Eagles chances at a win.

Minshew has thrown three crucial interception in the second half of his two games, all of which played a significant role in losses. The Eagles could have taken the lead, having the ball with 91 yards to score with just over six minutes left when the possession started.

The quote

“We can’t expect the season to go peaches and cream and go our way all the time. Unfortunately we put ourselves in this position and we gotta find a way to win next week.” — James Bradberry to CBS Sports on the recent adversity the Eagles are facing.

Philadelphia has failed to wrap up home-field advantage the last two weeks. The Eagles still control their own destiny, needing a win over the Giants — who have nothing to play for — next week.

Up next

The Eagles (13-3) face the New York Giants in their regular season finale, with a win needed to seal home-field advantage. The Saints (7-9) end their season against the Panthers.

Could we see Sean Payton and Tom Brady in New Orleans next year?

Getty Images

Earlier this month, we mused about Sean Payton and Tom Brady finally getting together in 2023, possibly with the Saints. While the possibility Brady to New Orleans (or anywhere) remains a complete and total unknown, there’s a growing school of thought in league circles that Payton, if he coaches in 2023, will return to the Saints.

One source with a finger firmly on the pulse of pro football told PFT that it’s currently the “worst-kept secret” in league circles.

It would still be a stunner if it happens. Considering the various potential openings for 2023, it could be the only place where Payton and Brady could finish what nearly happened in Miami for 2022.

Brady is a free agent after the season. He can go anywhere. Why not the Saints? Why not team up with Payton? Why not play his home games in the stadium where he won his first Super Bowl?

As the source put it, Payton’s not going to Denver or Carolina. With the Chargers making the playoffs, that job isn’t coming open. The only other potential destination would be the Cowboys, if Dallas loses in the opening round of the playoffs and coach Mike McCarthy gets fired.

And the only drawback to Payton going back to the Saints is that it would delay his quest to be the first coach in league history to win a Super Bowl with two different teams.

So stay tuned. Maybe it will be Payton back in New Orleans. And Brady and Payton finally together, come 2023.

tornado hits new orleans damaging

Comment

Amid a two-day outbreak of deadly storms across the South, a tornado roared across New Orleans on Wednesday evening — for the second time this year.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 3:45 p.m. local time for New Orleans and confirmed that a twister was on the ground near Arabi and the Lower Ninth Ward, two neighborhoods in the city, at 4:04 p.m. as it raced northeastward at 35 mph.

A flood warning was issued for the Base of Wisner overpass by the City of New Orleans via Twitter at about half past five local time.

Storms turn deadly in South as blizzard swirls over Plains, Upper Midwest

The same area was also hit by a tornado on March 22 this year; it was rated an EF3 on the 0 to 5 scale for twister intensity. The March tornado, the strongest on record to hit New Orleans, killed a 25-year-old man and damaged or destroyed dozens of homes in Arabi.

As Wednesday’s tornado swept across the region, debris could be seen falling from the sky on New Orleans’s lower Canal Street, tweeted ABC News meteorologist Rob Marciano.

Photos and video from social media revealed damage in Marrero, on the south side of the Mississippi River, and below downtown New Orleans, where a shopping center appeared mangled.

As storms continued to pass through southeast Louisiana Wednesday evening, more than 40,000 customers were without power according to PowerOutage.US.

Southeast Louisiana, southern Mississippi and southeast Alabama remained under a “particularly dangerous situation” tornado watch, reserved for the most serious twister threats, until 8 p.m. Central time Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The large and powerful storm that spawned the tornadoes Tuesday and Wednesday originated in California over the weekend and is lumbering across the Lower 48 states.

It has also generated blizzard conditions in the northern Rockies, northern Plains and parts of the Upper Midwest. It is next expected to bring ice and snow to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast on Thursday and Friday.

The National Weather Service received roughly two dozen reports of tornadoes in southern Louisiana and Mississippi on Wednesday, adding to the 26 reports it received in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi on Tuesday.

Two people died south of Shreveport, La., Tuesday when a tornado struck the town of Keithville. About two to three dozen houses in the community were damaged or destroyed, according to local officials.

To the northeast of Shreveport, another tornado injured two dozen when it hit the town of Farmerville.

On Wednesday morning, a tornado that tracked through New Iberia, La., about 20 miles southeast of Lafayette, damaged several homes and trapped several people, according to the local police department. Three people were taken to the hospital.

Tornado damage was also reported Wednesday afternoon in St. Tammany Parish, La., St. Charles Parish, La., Montz, La., Killona, La., Newton, Miss., Macedonia, Miss., and Mannassa, Miss.

Tom Brady makes record 44th fourth-quarter comeback as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers beat the New Orleans Saints

CNN
 —

When his team trails in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady is almost inevitable.

Down 13 points against the New Orleans Saints in the closing minutes, Brady steered the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an improbable 17-16 win on Monday Night Football.

In the process, he passed Peyton Manning for the most career fourth-quarter comebacks (44) in the history of the NFL.

The win was extraordinary even by Brady’s standards, marking the largest regular-season fourth-quarter comeback in his career, according to ESPN.

“Just like we drew it up,” was the 45-year-old’s response when he arrived at the post-game press conference, prompting a ripple of laughter from those in attendance.

The comeback started with 5:21 remaining when Brady led the Bucs on a 10-play drive which ended when he found Cade Otton with a touchdown pass from one yard out.

That brought Tampa Bay within six points before Brady orchestrated an 11-play, game-winning drive and found Rachaad White for the touchdown with three seconds remaining.

Ryan Succop’s extra point made the difference between the two teams, moving the Bucs to 6-6 on the season at the top of the NFC South while the Saints drop to 4-9.

Brady ended the night 36-of-54 passing for 281 yards and later dedicated the win to his daughter Vivian, who celebrated her 10th birthday on Monday.

Having announced his retirement earlier this year only to reverse the decision, the win was evidence the seven-time Super Bowl champion is not yet done on the football field.

“We’ve got a lot games coming down to the end, some we’ve won, some we’ve lost, which is why we’re 6-6,” Brady told reporters. “It’s not where we want to be, but we’ll keep fighting.”

For the Saints, it was a frustrating night against their division rivals at Raymond James Stadium.

Quarterback Andy Dalton was 20 of 28 for 229 yards and one touchdown, which came when he connected with Taysom Hill in the second quarter. They were otherwise restricted to three field goals from Wil Lutz.

“I feel like a broken record saying the same thing over and over again,” said Dalton. “We just missed opportunities.”

Coach Dennis Allen shared Dalton’s frustration: “We gave ourselves every chance and didn’t get it done … I felt like we had an opportunity to win this game and didn’t finish,” he said.

New Orleans have a bye this weekend and next face the Atlanta Falcons on December 18, while Tampa Bay play the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday.

Portland Trail Blazers’ defense, Jerami Grant, lead way in 106-95 win at New Orleans Pelicans: At the buzzer

Damian Lillard was not pleased that the Portland Trail Blazers sat him as a precaution for their visit to New Orleans Thursday night as he continues to ease back from a calf injury.

It spoiled an anticipated matchup against CJ McCollum, his longtime former teammate and good friend.

Next came news that Jusuf Nurkic (right adductor soreness) and Shaedon Sharpe (right finger sprain) also would be sidelined with injuries.

With so many key bodies down, the Blazers appeared to be a long shot to win at the Smoothie King Center.

But once again, the Blazers’ available players elevated their games, the defense continued to thrive and Portland pulled off a 106-95 victory.

Jerami Grant led the Blazers with 27 points and Anfernee Simons scored 23. But it was the defense that carried the night, holding down a Pelicans team that entered Thursday averaging 118.2 points per game, third-best in the NBA.

Simons began slowly, going scoreless and missing all five of his shots in the first quarter. But like he always does, Simons kept firing and eventually his shots began to fall. He scored 10 points in the second quarter, then added 11 more in the third.

The Blazers shot 43.5% from the field, including 35.3% from three-point range. And perhaps the most encouraging statistic was nine — as in nine turnovers. The team had been averaging 17.2, tied for the most in the NBA.

“Obviously, the thing I’m most proud of in this game is our turnovers,” Blazers coach Chauncey Billups said. “When you don’t turn it over, teams don’t score in transition on you. I like our defense in the half court. They do a decent enough job. I thought our zone was incredible in this game tonight. We just kept fighting.”

Zion Williamson led the Pelicans with 29 points. McCollum finished with 13 points and seven assists. Brandon Ingram, who fouled out with 3:32 remaining, had 14 points and five rebounds.

The Blazers held the Pelicans to 41.8% shooting.

“Very huge win,” Blazers forward Justise Winslow said. “This is a team we’re going to see four times this year. They’ve been playing well. We had people down and out. But it’s alway next-man up mentality. Guys stepped up and guys made necessary plays when we needed.”

WHAT IT MEANS

Before the season started, this six-game trip looked like it would be a doozy for the Blazers (9-3). But they surprisingly have won four of the first five games, even though Lillard has sat three times, Nurkic and Simons have each missed two games and Grant has been sidelined once. The Pelicans fell to 6-6.

“We’ve played some really good teams on this trip and we’ve earned every single thing on this trip, so far,” Billups said. “We thought that it was going to be a very challenging trip and it has been.”

JERAMI GRANT DELIVERS

Before the game, Billups said he told Grant, who played 42 minutes, that the team would need everything he had given how shorthanded they were.

In fact, Billups told Grant and Simons to take some questionable shots here and there in order to create offense with Lillard, Nurkic and Sharpe out.

“I thought Jerami was big time all night,” Billups said.

One of Grant’s biggest moments came with 4:56 remaining when drove the lane, elevated and dunked over two Pelicans defenders to give the Blazers a 97-89 lead.

“For a guy that’s not aggressive, there was a lot of aggression on that dunk,” Billups said. “I think he knows that once you go down there, if you don’t dunk it hard, they could block it … I though it was just a great move and an even better finish.”

NASSIR LITTLE

With three key players out, that left the Blazers’ bench thin. Coach Chauncey Billups went with an eight-man rotation, and Nassir Little was a key option. He came through with 15 points and four rebounds, while hitting 6 of 11 shots. He made several key baskets in the second half.

“I was really proud and happy for Nas,” Billups said.

The only other players to come off of the bench were Trendon Watford and Jabari Walker. The pair combined for six points and eight rebounds. Watford had three steels.

Billups said both did a good job of helping the offense become less stagnant late in the game by making smart plays with the ball.

“Those guys we depend on to just make things go,” Billups said. “Their numbers most of the time won’t be noticeable on the stat sheet.”

NEXT UP

The Blazers close out their six-game trip Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at Dallas (6-5).

Saints vs. Cardinals score, takeaways: Arizona picks off New Orleans to snap home losing skid

The Arizona Cardinals defeated the New Orleans Saints 42-34 in a “Thursday Night Football” game that actually had some offense, which is a nice change of pace this season. The Cardinals moved to 3-4 and snapped an eight-game home losing streak, while the Saints dropped to 2-5.

The matchup was even for most of the first half, with a tie game with less than three minutes left in the second quarter. Then the scale drastically leaned toward the Cardinals, who scored three touchdowns in that time.

The visiting defense shook quarterback Andy Dalton and his offense with back-back interception returns that followed an offensive touchdown from Arizona.

Going into the half with 22 unanswered points and a 28-14 lead was more than a solid start for the Cardinals to build on in the second half.

The Saints came out of the half and scored a field goal and a score was definitely crucial there, but they needed to be putting up seven points opposed to three in order to catch up.

To make matters worse for the Saints, the Cardinals scored another touchdown in the third quarter, going up 35-17 with a 5-yard touchdown pass from Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray to Greg Dortch.

The Saints made it a game in the fourth with a 17-yard touchdown from Juwan Johnson.

It was a touchdown party tonight and the Cardinals put up another halfway through the fourth quarter thanks to the five-yard rush from Eno Benjamin.

If you think that’s where the touchdowns ended, think again. This high-scoring game saw another one from the Saints, making it a 42-31 game thanks to a pass from Dalton to Juwan Johnson.

A Saints field goal with less than a minute to go made it an eight-point game and was followed by a an unsuccessful onside kick try that sealed the win for Arizona.

Why the Cardinals won

To put it simply, they were the better team. They were more complete on all sides of the ball and picked out the opposing team’s weaknesses and capitalized on them.

The Cardinals offense had a new-found spark with DeAndre Hopkins returning from his suspension. Hopkins finished the night with 10 receptions for 103 yards.

The defense deserves a lot of credit for the win, intercepting Andy Dalton three times. All players got involved, with Antonio Hamilton, Isaiah Simmons and Marco Williams all having interceptions.

Why the Saints lost

Two interceptions for returns is never going to set you up for a win and the offense just could not recover from the Cardinals explosive end of the second quarter, where they scored three touchdowns.

The Saints offense lacks consistency and while things were not all bad, they needed to establish a steady rhythm and were unable to do so.

With Jameis Winston out, Andy Dalton took the reigns and when he was good he was good, throwing for 4 touchdowns and 361 yards yards, but when he was bad he was handing the other team touchdowns.

Turning point

The first pick six of the first half really made a statement, while also shifting the momentum toward the Cardinals. The 38-yard interception return from Marco Wilson gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game, a lead they would keep for the rest of the game.

Play of the game

Since I already mentioned one pick six as the turning point, it seems only fair to give the second pick six some attention as well.

With less than a minute left in the half, Isaiah Simmons intercepted Andy Dalton, marking the quarterback’s third pick of the half. Simmons ran it to the house for 56 yards, extending the lead to make it 28-14.

What’s next

The Saints will host the Las Vegas Raiders, who currently stand at 1-4 and are coming off a loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, on Oct. 30.

The Cardinals will head to Minnesota to face the Vikings in Week 8. The Vikings are quietly off to a great start to their season and are in first place in their division as it stands heading into the weekend.

New Orleans Saints say QB Jameis Winston doubtful, WR Michael Thomas out vs. Minnesota Vikings in London

New Orleans Saints quarterback Jameis Winston is unlikely to play in Sunday’s game in London against the Minnesota Vikings and wide receiver Michael Thomas has been ruled out, coach Dennis Allen told reporters Friday.

Neither Winston (back/ankle) nor Thomas (foot) has practiced over the past three days due to their injuries.

Andy Dalton would get the start at quarterback for the Saints if Winston, who is considered doubtful, is inactive for Sunday’s game. The Saints signed Dalton to a one-year contract this offseason after playing four quarterbacks in 2021 due to injuries and COVID-19.

“Our plan right now is to have Andy ready to go,” Allen said. “We’ll see how things go overnight, but Andy will be ready to go if that’s the direction that we go.”

Dalton has experience playing in London. He played in two games there as a Cincinnati Bengals starter, including a 27-27 tie in 2016 against Washington and current Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

ESPN’s Katherine Terrell and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
