Trump’s cash plea could complicate GOP fundraising efforts

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — “Trump needs you,” one fundraising email implored.

“President Trump’s Legacy is in your hands,” another pleaded.

Others advertised “Miss Me Yet?” T-shirts featuring Donald Trump’s smiling face.

While some Republicans grapple with how fiercely to embrace the former president, the organizations charged with raising money for the party are going all in. The Republican National Committee and the party’s congressional campaign arms are eager to cash in on Trump’s lure with small donors ahead of next year’s midterm elections, when the GOP hopes to regain control of at least one chamber of Congress.

But there’s a problem: Trump himself. In his first speech since leaving office, the former president encouraged loyalists to give directly to him, essentially bypassing the traditional groups that raise money for GOP candidates.

“There’s only one way to contribute to our efforts to elect ‘America First’ Republican conservatives and, in turn, to make America great again,” Trump said Sunday at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida. “And that’s through Save America PAC and donaldjtrump.com.”

The comment was particularly notable because Trump is generally loath to ask for money in person. It amounts to the latest salvo in the battle to shape the future of the GOP, with Trump making clear that he holds no allegiance to the party’s traditional fundraising operation as he tries to consolidate power.

That could help him add to an already commanding war chest, aiding his effort to influence the party. Save America has more than $80 million cash on hand, including $3 million raised after the CPAC speech, according to a person familiar with the total.

Some of that money could help Trump settle scores with incumbent members of Congress who have crossed him. In his Sunday speech, Trump read aloud the names of every Republican who voted against him and called for them to be defeated. He’s already endorsed a Republican challenger to GOP Rep. Anthony Gonzalez of Ohio, who voted to impeach Trump over the U.S. Capitol riot.

“Trump’s call to give directly to him shows that the normal organs of the party … are going to have to fight for relevance in the 2022 cycle,” said Dan Eberhart, a longtime Republican donor who has given large sums to all three as well as to Trump’s campaign.

Bill Palatucci, a RNC member from New Jersey, called Trump’s comments “unwelcome” and “counterproductive” and voiced concern that the GOP would suffer further losses, like Georgia’ Senate runoff elections in January, if they don’t work together.

“Listen it’s a free country. Anybody can form a federal PAC or a super PAC and there’s always lots of competition for dollars. But the crossing the line there is then to also tell people to not give to the important committees of the national party,” said Palatucci. “There’s got to be a willingness on the former president to look beyond his own self-interest.”

The RNC and spokespeople for the House and Senate campaign committees declined to comment. But others sought to downplay the apparent tensions. They noted, for instance, that Trump is scheduled to speak at the RNC’s spring donor retreat — a major fundraising source — in April in Palm Beach.

And Trump told the party’s chair, Ronna McDaniel, in recent days that he wants to continue fundraising for the RNC, according to a person briefed on the conversation who, like others, spoke on condition of anonymity to disclose private conversations.

Before making his money pitch on Sunday, Trump’s team quietly updated its fundraising filings. They converted his Save America leadership PAC to an entity that can also support other candidates, and turned his main Donald J. Trump for President campaign committee into the Make America Great Again, or MAGAPac. Money raised through Trump’s website now goes to Save America JFC, a joint fundraising agreement between the two.

While Trump left office as a deeply unpopular figure, he remains a powerful draw for small-dollar, grassroots donors, a reality that has been abundantly clear in fundraising appeals over the last week.

Over the course of a single hour last Thursday, the RNC, both GOP congressional campaign committees and the Republican State Leadership Committee, which tries to elect Republicans to state office, blasted supporters with urgent fundraising appeals that included urgent references to Trump.

And the National Republican Senatorial Committee warned this week that its “limited edition” T-shirts featuring Trump were almost sold out.

Regardless of Trump’s next move, the GOP is unlikely to remove him from its sales pitch anytime soon.

“Our digital fundraising strategy is simple: raise as much money as possible,” said Andrew Romeo, a spokesman for the RSLC.

Walk-ups encouraged at new Orlando mass vaccination site

FEMA’s new mass vaccination site in Orlando opens on Wednesday at Valencia College’s west campus. According to the federal agency in charge of the new site, appointments are not required and walk-ups are encouraged in an effort to “increase COVID-19 vaccine access to underserved populations.”FEMA spokesperson Crystal Paulk-Buchanan said: “If an individual arrives to the site and all time slots are filled for that day, site staff will work with them to schedule an appointment at the site to receive a vaccine. Individuals can also schedule appointments on-site in a separate registration lane if they do not want to wait for walk-up availability.”The site is not a drive through, instead people will park their cars and enter tents. Inside they will have their temperature checked, get the vaccine and then wait 15 minutes to make sure they don’t have a reaction. Site officials say they expect to do a total of 3,000 vaccinations a day. In additional to the main site, two temporary mobile sites will also be set up. The first at the Englewood Neighborhood Center will be open this Wednesday through Saturday. The second at Kelly Park in Apopka will run from March 7 through the 10.The state is working to update myvaccine.fl.gov so all eligible groups can preregister, adding the website should be ready by Wednesday. They are asking people in newly approved groups like police and teachers bring proof of employment to site to get vaccine. On Tuesday, soldiers with the U.S. Army spent the day training by vaccinating about 140 law enforcement officers. “They’re super excited to be here,” Lt. Col. Troy Fisher said about his soldiers. Fisher is the Department of Defense commander in charge of the new site. About 100 of his soldiers traveled from the Tennessee-Kentucky state line to help give people COVID-19 vaccines in Orange County. “Majority of my personal time has been in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Fisher. “I am just as excited to do this as anything else I’ve done for the military because this is taking care of the U.S. population and we should all be proud of that.”The servicemembers’ goal on Tuesday was to test the workflow at the FEMA site before Wednesday’s opening to the public. One of the first to get a shot as part of training was Orlando police Chief Orlando Rolon and about 140 other law enforcement officers. “These officers have been risking their lives all year long during this COVID pandemic to make sure that our citizens are kept safe,” said Rolon. The police chief talked about what he was thinking about when he was in the chair. “When we saw that 500,000 Americans had lost their lives due to COVID, that to me was the one moment that convinced me 100% that this is a must, that this is something we must do,” he said. Chief Rolon said last year, the nation lost more officers to COVID-19 than in the line of duty. Out of the Orlando Police Department’s over 800 officers, he said over 100 have tested positive for the coronavirus throughout the pandemic. So with about half of his officers saying they want to get a shot, he hopes to set an example. “I took part to show, ‘Hey, this is something that I buy into, this is something that we should all consider,’ and I highly recommend it,” he said. On Tuesday, first responders thanked the Armed Forces for helping in their shared mission to protect the public.“I want to give kudos to our Armed Services, our Armed Forces for their role in making this possible. There is a small army in their taking care of us as we’re getting the vaccine,” Rolon said.People can preregister by visiting myvaccine.fl.gov or calling their county’s designated phone number.

Seuss Landing attraction could be changed at Universal Orlando

3 thoughts after the Dallas Mavericks hold on against the Orlando Magic, 130-124

The Dallas Mavericks won their ninth road game of the season, defeating the Orlando Magic 130-124. Luka Doncic led Dallas with a near triple double, scoring 33 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and dishing out nine assists. Nikola Vucevic scored a team-high 29 for Orlando in defeat.

All five Dallas starters scored a basket in the opening minutes of the game. After getting to the paint at will early, the Mavericks seemed unable to score consistently, particularly after Doncic went to the bench for his usual first quarter rest. Kristaps Porzingis failed to carry the Mavericks offensively, missing five straight shots. These misses resulted in good looks for the Magic on the other end, as Evan Fournier and Vucevic scored 23 points in the quarter. Doncic’s two late threes kept the Mavericks close, but Dallas trailed 33-29 after twelve minutes.

Threes fell with frequency during the second quarter for Dallas, as they slowly inched ahead after starting the period trailing. The Mavericks led by as many as eight during the frame but continued poor defense on perimeter shooters and Dallas not connecting on open looks allowed the Magic to close within three before the end of the half. The Mavericks took a 61-58 lead into intermission.

Quarter three saw the more talented Mavericks simply outpace the Magic, particularly after Fournier left the game for a chunk of time with a potential back injury. Porzingis hit two early threes, breaking a three-less stretch which dated back to Valentine’s Day. Those early looks crumbled the Magic’s defense a bit and Dallas proceed to pour it on. Orlando, however, just wouldn’t go away as they hit numerous threes of their own. Dallas should’ve ended the frame up more, but late quarter miscues along with Luka Doncic losing a shoe allowed Orlando to keep the game within single digits. The Mavericks entered the fourth up 95-86.

Dallas opened with four straight points, causing Orlando to call a quick timeout not even a minute into the quarter. The Mavericks proceeded to pour the points on the Magic but not content to blow a team out, Dallas let up just enough to where the game went on longer than it needed to as the Magic repeatedly tried to rally. The putrid Dallas defense let the Magic creep within five points after being up double digits, but there just wasn’t enough time. Dallas walked away with their 17th victory of the season, winning 130-124.

Now, some thoughts:

The Maverick bench continues to crush opposing second units

Do Jalen Brunson or Tim Hardaway have a 6th Man of the Year potential? Watching the Dallas bench go nuts against yet another team (50-to-37), I can’t help but wonder what narrative will emerge if Dallas continues their run into the second half of the season.

We’ve already talked about how good Brunson is and there’s no harm in doing it more. He’s awesome and opposing defenses likely have to game plan around him in some form. He attacks the basket relentlessly and is really fun to watch in transition. His shoulder shakes on the move are a delight. Hardaway is another monster, though he had a quieter game tonight.

Please hit open shots, this is getting silly

It’s likely not shocking to anyone that the Dallas Mavericks are dead last in the NBA in terms of converting wide open three point shots, hitting just 36.1% of looks according to NBA.com’s tracking data. They are due for a positive regression eventually because it’s the entire team that can’t hit. Porzingis, Brunson, Hardaway, Richardson, basically anyone that isn’t Maxi Kleber can’t connect on these looks Doncic is serving up. Tonight’s a night where he was clearly assist hunting and his teammates couldn’t finish the open looks from distance.

It’ll swing eventually, they get too many not to. But dang if it’s not maddening.

What is going on with the Dallas defensive assignments?

This may come off as nitpicking in a win but the Magic are missing so many people, the Mavericks should have blown them off the court. If the Mavericks are a playoff team, then some nitpicking of their play is fair game. I do no understand what the Mavericks are doing with defensive assignments almost every game. This is probably worth a longer article but I’ll get the conversation going.

Against the Magic, Dallas went with Dorian Finney-Smith on Evan Fournier and Maxi Kleber on Nikola Vucevic. Fournier had 26 and Vucevic had 29.

The continued assertion by Dallas that Finney-Smith is some kind of defensive stopper is something I don’t understand. He’s a fine help defender, as he’s very active off-ball. But he cannot navigate screens to save his life and gets beaten by single dribble moves. That’s okay, guarding guys off the dribble these days is hard. But what is the point of Josh Richardson? Wasn’t he billed as a stopper? Am I making that up? I saw the historical data on how well Finney-Smith guards James Harden but there isn’t another player I recall him really defending well.

Vucevic is an All-Star so the idea that Kleber is the guy to lock him up makes sense, but frankly, Maxi is not the guy we know from last year on defense. When Porzingis had to guard Vucevic, he did an excellent job bothering him with his length. Defending the distance shots is a slightly different story as the Magic were on fire and as long as Porzingis is there with a hand up, that’s all we can ask.

This sort of thing happens every game where it feels like the Mavericks are outsmarting themselves in terms of anticipating switches and such, but with drop coverage, that’s not what they do anyway. I’m very open to being wrong here, it’s just that in game, I do not understand it. They should’ve beaten this current Magic roster by 50.

Detroit Pistons rookie Saben Lee lights up Orlando Magic in win

CLOSE

Detroit Pistons coach Dwane Casey talks Feb. 21, 2021, about Saben Lee’s impressive play and poise vs. the Orlando Magic.

Detroit Free Press

Detroit Pistons rookie Saben Lee was the team’s best offensive player once again on Tuesday, and this time it was coupled with a win.

The Pistons defeated the Orlando Magic, 105-93, behind another strong performance by Lee. The two-way guard led all players with a career-high 21 points while converting eight of his 11 shot attempts, including all three of his 3-pointers. Before Tuesday, he hadn’t made a 3-pointer in two attempts.

Lee (12 points and five assists) was a bright spot for the Pistons on Sunday, despite a loss to Orlando.

The win Tuesday snapped a three-game losing streak for the Pistons. Josh Jackson added 18 points off of the bench, and Jerami Grant had 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Nikola Vucevic led the Magic with 20 points.

Career nights for Smith and Lee

With Delon Wright and Killian Hayes nursing injuries, Dennis Smith Jr. and Saben Lee are the only healthy point guards on the roster. Smith received the start on Sunday, but Lee ended up having the stronger performance. On Tuesday, both players thrived.

Smith, after going scoreless Sunday, got off to a hot start against Orlando the second time around. He scored seven points in the first quarter and resumed his momentum when he checked after halftime, hitting a tough fallaway mid-range shot over Vucevic and a 3-pointer not long after. He was aggressive and efficient, having his best outing in a Pistons uniform with a season-high 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting and a pair of blocks.

As effective as Smith played, Lee had the stronger performance once again. Lee, the No. 38th pick overall in last year’s draft added four assists, three rebounds and two steals to his 21 points. He appears be adapting well to the NBA’s pace and, for the second straight game, did a great job attacking the rim and creating open shots for his teammates. He was more involved as a scorer compared to Sunday, converting a number of difficult looks near the rim.

Both Smith and Lee looked deserving of the starting job on Tuesday, but Lee is surpassing expectations as a second-round draft pick. He’s made 11 of his 17 shot attempts this week and may be ready for a large role sooner than expected.

Mykhailiuk gets first start of season

The Pistons opted to rest Wayne Ellington on Tuesday. They followed the advice of their medical staff, Casey said before the game, and it created an opportunity for some of Detroit’s bench players to receive more minutes.

Mykhailiuk’s third season has been marred by inconsistency, and he entered the game shooting 37.2% overall and 32.3% from 3-point range — both declines from last season. His ongoing shooting slump has made it difficult for him to carve out a consistent role in the rotation.

With Ellington out, Casey inserted Mykhailiuk into the starting lineup for the first time this season. He had nine points, three rebounds and three assists in 22 minutes. While he didn’t snap his slump in missing four of his five 3-point attempts, he made some nice passes and did a good job finishing at the rim. It’s unclear if Ellington will miss additional time, but it could open more opportunities for Mykhailiuk to get back on track.

Video shows SUV falling off I-4 and crashing onto Kaley Street near downtown Orlando

ORLANDO, Fla. – An SUV fell off Interstate 4 and landed on its roof on Kaley Street, prompting police to close the interstate near downtown Orlando.

[WATCH BELOW: VIDEO SHOWS SUV FALLING OFF I-4]

The crash was reported around 6 a.m. Monday on I-4 east, which was closed at Kaley Street. Two lanes were reopened about 30 minutes later and all eastbound lanes were reopened before 8:30 a.m. Eastbound on-ramps at Michigan Avenue were also reopened.

By about 12:30 p.m., repairs were finished and all lanes were reopened.

Orlando police said a yellow Chevrolet Camaro hit the white Jeep shortly before 6 a.m., before it fell off the interstate. The Camaro also hit a white Ford Escape, records show.

The 47-year-old man driving the Camaro and the 33-year-old man driving the Jeep were taken to area hospitals. The Jeep driver is in stable condition while the Camaro driver’s injuries were not considered life threatening. The female driving the Ford was not injured.

“The vehicle appears to have left I-4, crashing down on Kaley,” News 6 traffic safety expert Trooper Steve said.

Wesley Cole witnessed the crash at a nearby gas station and ran to help.

“Sparks were flying about 20 feet up in the air. That’s the first thing I saw. You can see the Jeep actually rising above the guardrail and you knew it was coming over,” Cole said. “It hit the pylon and flipped over backwards, that’s when it ejected the driver. It’s the craziest thing I’ve ever seen, but someone was looking out for him, for sure.”

Records show two people called 911 immediately after the crash and reported that an officer was already arriving on scene.

“There’s been a serious accident. Somebody just hopped off of I-4. It’s on the corner of Kaley and I-4, basically. It looks like a Jeep or SUV or something,” a witness said.

Police said they’re still investigating the cause of the crash.

Ravens Pro Bowl tackle Orlando Brown Jr. wants to be traded and multiple teams are interested

Timothy T Ludwig/Getty Images

It appears the Baltimore Ravens could be losing a starter along the offensive line this offseason, as Pro Bowl offensive tackle Orlando Brown Jr. has made it clear that he would like to be traded. According to CBS NFL Insider Jason La Canfora, Brown has been given permission to seek a trade, and multiple teams are interested in his services.

La Canfora says based on the level of interest, there’s a good chance a trade that makes sense for all parties involved comes together. However, Brown is talented and has a strong relationship with the Ravens franchise, who would certainly want good value in return for him. Brown was selected in the third round of the 2018 NFL Draft and started 10 games in his rookie season at right tackle. He started all 16 games on the right side in 2019, and made his first Pro Bowl. However, things changed this past season.

When star left tackle Ronnie Stanley went down with a severe ankle injury, Brown moved over to the left side. There, he found success and made his second straight Pro Bowl. Now, he wants to stay at left tackle to honor his late father and former Raven, Orlando Brown Sr.

“Growing up in my household, if you were going to play O-line, my dad didn’t want you being on the right side,” Brown told The Baltimore Sun in November.

“It was one of those deals where he felt as though the right tackle — and especially at the time when he played — he felt the right tackle was not considered the best tackle on the offensive line and in the offensive line room. And his mentality and approach was, ‘I want you to be better than me.’ So from Day 1, when I started playing offensive line, it was always him working me on the left side.”

The Ravens would need to receive a major haul to trade Brown, and there’s a good chance they receive what they want with how the 24-year-old played in 2020.

Berhalter Names 25-Player Roster ahead of USA-Trinidad and Tobago on Jan. 31 in Orlando

CHICAGO (Jan. 24, 2021) – USMNT head coach Gregg Berhalter has chosen a 25-player roster in advance of USA-Trinidad & Tobago on Jan. 31 in Orlando [TICKETS]. Coverage from Exploria Stadium for the USA’s first match of 2021 begins at 7 p.m. ET on FS1, UniMás and TUDN.

The group was selected from an initial list of 12 senior team players and 26 U-23 MNT players that began training on Jan. 9 at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla. The team traveled to Orlando on Sunday afternoon.

LAFC defender Tristan Blackmon suffered a concussion in training Saturday and will return to Los Angeles today.

At the start of a crucial year for the U.S. Men’s National Team that includes the Concacaf Nations League Final Four, the Gold Cup and the start of 2022 World Cup Qualifying, the tilt against the Soca Warriors gives the players an opportunity to stake their claim for spots.

“These last two weeks have been an absolute pleasure. The hard work and determination demonstrated by the entire group confirms that the player pool is headed in the right direction,” Berhalter said. “As we transition to Orlando, we switch gears and focus on competing as we prepare to face Trinidad and Tobago.”

A total of 15 MLS teams are represented, with hometown Orlando City SC contributing a league-high four players. Sixteen players are age-eligible for the 2021 Concacaf Olympic Qualifying Championship to be played from March 18-30 in Guadalajara, Mexico.

See’s Orlando Bloom Reaction to Katy Perry’s Inaugural Performance

Orlando Bloom is “one proud partner” after watching Katy Perry‘s Inauguration performance.

On the evening of Jan. 20, the singer performed her hit 2010 song “Firework” during the Celebrating America special, which was hosted by Tom Hanks. The Smile star, dressed in all white, sang the powerful ballad with fireworks shooting into the night sky.

After watching the performance, Bloom—who shares daughter Daisy Dove with the singer—took to Instagram to share his thoughts of the momentous experience.

“One day our little girl will grow up and see her mother play her part in a moment in history that we hope will heal, we hope will unite, we hope, we love,” he wrote in the caption. “One proud partner here with a tear of joy us.”

Katy and the Pirates of the Caribbean star welcomed their first child together, Daisy, back in August. Orlando also shares 10-year-old Flynn Christopher with his ex-wife Miranda Kerr.
