Spectrum Originals Shutting Down: Shows Renewed Cancelled, Joe Pickett

The TV landscape is losing another source of original content: Spectrum Originals, which produced series like L.A.’s Finest and the Mad About You revival for Spectrum cable subscribers, is shutting down, according to our sister site Deadline, with parent company Charter Communications scrapping all of its original programming plans.

The move leaves several current Spectrum series in limbo, including neo-Western Joe Pickett, which is billed as Spectrum’s top-rated series ever and was renewed for Season 2 in February, and sci-fi thriller Beacon 23, starring Game of Thrones alum Lena Headey, which has already been renewed ahead of its series premiere. (Beacon 23 is a co-production with AMC.) It’s unclear yet if these series will still air on Spectrum, be moved to another network or be scrapped altogether.

Spectrum Originals launched in 2019 with the premiere of L.A.’s Finest, an offshoot of the Bad Boys movies franchise originally developed at NBC and starring Gabrielle Union and Jessica Alba. It ran for two seasons before being cancelled in 2020. Spectrum also hosted a six-episode revival of the ’90s NBC sitcom Mad About You, with Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt reprising their roles as married New Yorkers Paul and Jamie Buchman. Their other original series included The Bite, a COVID satire from The Good Fight‘s Robert and Michelle King, and Season 2 of true crime anthology Manhunt, which came over from Discovery and focused on the 1996 Atlanta bombing and falsely accused suspect Richard Jewell.

Several more upcoming series still remain in development at Spectrum Originals: the miniseries George and Tammy, starring Oscar winner Jessica Chastain as country music legend Tammy Wynette; the Cold War thriller A Spy Among Friends, starring Damian Lewis and Guy Pearce (a co-production with BritBox); and the Florida-set dramedy Panhandle, starring The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel‘s Luke Kirby (a co-production with the Roku Channel).

Former TNA world champ added to Impact Originals team for Slammiversary

Honor No More has been running amok in Impact for too long. At the urging of Frankie Kazarian, Scott D’Amore took all he can stands. He can’t stands no more. D’Amore booked Honor No More against a crew of Impact Originals to protect the sanctity of the 20 year celebration at Slammiversary.

The Impact Originals team consists of Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, and Kazarian going against the Honor No More quintet of Eddie Edwards, Matt Taven, Mike Bennett, Vincent, and PCO. D’Amore granted the Impact leaders carte blanche to select their final two teammates. The only caveat was that those men had to represent the love of Impact.

Impact dropped a bombshell on the Thursday night edition of Impact Wrestling to reveal a former TNA world champ as one of the Impact Originals partners. Nick Aldis is the man of the hour.

Aldis is a heavy-duty hitter worthy of the spot. He worked his way up the ranks as Magnus to hold the TNA World Heavyweight Championship for 128 days. Aldis is also a two-time TNA tag champ, former IWGP tag champ, former GHC tag champ, and former GFW global champ. After Aldis’ time in TNA, he helped build the NWA back into prominence by holding the NWA Worlds Heavyweight Championship twice. He joined a select club when carrying the belt for 1,043 days in his second reign.

The Impact Originals team has one spot remaining. No clues have been given. That means the hope for Samoa Joe still burns strong. James Storm and Jeff Jarrett are other major names that would make headlines.

The Slammiversary card currently includes:

  • Impact World Championship: Josh Alexander (c) vs. Eric Young
  • Queen of the Mountain for the Knockouts Championship: Tasha Steelz (c) vs. Deonna Purrazzo vs. Chelsea Green vs. Jordynne Grace vs. Mia Yim with Mickie James as special guest enforcer
  • Impact World Tag Team Championship: Briscoes (c) vs. Good Brothers
  • Ultimate X for the X-Division Championship: Ace Austin (c) vs. Trey Miguel vs. Kenny King vs. “Speedball” Mike Bailey vs. Jack Evans vs. Alex Zayne
  • Knockouts World Tag Team Championship: Tenille Dashwood & Madison Rayne (c) vs. Rosemary & Taya Valkyrie
  • Monster’s Ball: Sami Callihan vs. Moose
  • Honor No More (Eddie Edwards, Matt Taven, Mike Bennett, Vincent, & PCO) vs. Impact Originals (Chris Sabin, Alex Shelley, Frankie Kazarian, Nick Aldis & one more partner)
  • Impact Digital Media Championship: Rich Swann (c) vs. Brian Myers (on pre-show)
  • Reverse Battle Royal (on pre-show)

Slammiversary goes live at 8 pm ET on Sunday, June 19 through PPV and Fite TV.

Are you excited about the Nick Aldis pick? How does the Slammiversary card stack up in your eye?

Dying Light 2 Steam launch nearly quadruples original’s all-time peak

Seven years after the original Dying Light, its sequel is now playable on PC, with the console versions launching at midnight. Despite the mixed critical response, Dying Light 2 Stay Human has had a massive launch on Steam.

According to SteamDB, Dying Light 2 is currently sitting at 163,831 concurrent players as of this writing. The original Dying Light’s all-time peak sat at 45,876 players. This places Dying Light 2’s Steam launch at around 3.5 times that of its predecessor’s record.

This concurrent players number shouldn’t come as a huge surprise, seeing as Techland’s ambitious follow-up was the most wishlisted game on the platform throughout 2021. In addition to PC, Dying Light 2 is also playable on all last-gen and current-gen PlayStation and Xbox consoles, with a Nintendo Switch version coming at some point in 2022.

Assuming the momentum translates across platforms, this bodes well for the already announced years of post-launch support. The original Dying Light received significant content many years after launch. With its huge Steam debut and more target platforms, its sales potential could exceed the first game. This would only provide further incentive for Techland to stick to its word regarding the future of Dying Light 2.

Disney+ Unveils Bumper Slate of 18 Originals From Asia-Pacific Region – The Hollywood Reporter

The Walt Disney Co. unveiled an impressive array of content firepower Thursday to drive subscriber growth for Disney+ as the streaming wars heat up in the vast Asia-Pacific region.

At a splashy online showcase event hosted out of its Asia offices, Disney announced 18 local-language Originals to be produced over the coming year in territories including Japan, South Korea, Indonesia, greater China and Australia. The titles span both series and film, and feature a diversity of genres, ranging from scripted drama to anime, comedy, fantasy, romance, science-fiction, crime, horror, variety shows and documentaries.

Highlights from the Disney+ APAC slate include a strong selection of Korean titles, such as a documentary about K-pop super group BLACKPINK; Moving, a tentpole Korean action series about teens with mysterious powers; and a pair of anticipated K-drama romances, Snowdrop and Rookies. Predictably, the regionally and globally popular content category of Japanese anime also features prominently in Disney’s plans, with shows on the way like Summer Time Rendering, based on a best-selling manga of the same name. And from China, Disney has greenlit the food-themed period rom-com Delicacies Destiny, from Yu Zheng, the hitmaking producer behind period drama sensation Story of Yanxi Palace. (The complete list of Disney’s APAC originals slate is listed below.)

Disney’s bold content expansion in APAC was long anticipated, and the splashy showcase comes at a time when the scramble for streaming subscribers and market share in Asia — home to half of the world’s top six largest economies— is only accelerating. Disney said the slate shared Thursday is a first step towards the company’s goal of greenlighting over 50 APAC originals by 2023. The importance of the region to U.S. streaming companies, both as a pillar source of subscribers and globally appealing content, has been underscored in recent weeks by the smash success of Korean thriller Squid Game, which is on its way to becoming Netflix’s most-watched piece of content ever.

“For many decades, The Walt Disney Company has been entertaining consumers and has been an integral part of the local creative ecosystem,” said Luke Kang, Disney’s president in Asia Pacific. “Today, we are making another commitment by combining the global resources of the company with the best content creators from Asia Pacific to develop and produce original stories on Disney+. With over-the-top services going mainstream, emergence of world-class content from Asia Pacific and rising consumer sophistication, we believe that this is the right time for us to deepen our collaboration with the region’s best content creators to deliver unparalleled storytelling to global audiences.”

Disney+ is a little over midway through its rollout in the region, with the service already available in Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Singapore, India, Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand, with upcoming launches set for South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan in November. In its most recent earnings statement in mid-August, Disney reported that Disney+ had added 13 million subscribers for a global total of 116 million, narrowly beating Wall Street forecasts of 115 million.

During the presentation, Disney also showcased its Star streaming bundle — which includes a larger library of content from Disney Television Studios, FX, 20th Century Studios, 20th Television and Touchstone — as brand is set to bolster the Disney+ content offering in key Asia markets, such as Japan, in the weeks ahead.

“Our production strategy is centered on working with the best local storytellers in the region, leveraging our brand power, scale and dedication to creative excellence,” said Jessica Kam-Engle, Disney’s APAC Head of Content & Development, who talked through company’s new APAC content slate in detail. “We look forward to collaborating with award-winning and emerging creative talent in Asia Pacific and sharing authentic stories that reflect the unique cultural and social dynamics from this region to global audiences.”

Pokemon Diamond and Pearl Remakes Are Changing a Major Feature of the Originals

Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are coming to Nintendo Switch next month, and it seems that the remake will be making a big change from the DS original: HMs have been dropped from the game! The official Pokemon Twitter account has revealed that hidden moves like Cut and Rock Climb will now be used by wild Pokemon that are summoned through the Poketch. This means that players won’t have to teach any HMs to their Pokemon, wasting space that could be used for a more powerful attack. It’s a small quality of life improvement, but one that will be welcomed by most fans!

“You can also use your Pokétch to call on wild Pokémon to help you go places you could never reach on your own! They’ll use hidden moves like Cut to chop down trees that block your way, or Rock Climb to scale steep cliffs,” the Tweet reads.

HMs were introduced in the first generation of Pokemon games, allowing players to teach Pokemon to use moves that opened up areas of the map. While HMs like Surf could also be useful in battle, moves like Cut and Flash took up valuable move space. Each Pokemon can only know four moves, and HMs (initially) could not be deleted and replaced. Over the last few generations, Game Freak has mostly done away with HMs, replacing them instead with options that don’t take up move space. Previous Pokemon remakes like Pokemon: Let’s Go similarly dumped HMs, so fans should be happy to see that will also be the case for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.

While Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl will have a lot in common with its predecessor, it’s becoming increasingly evident that there will be quite a few changes, as well. It remains to be seen if those changes will make for a more enjoyable experience, but fans can find out for themselves on November 19th. In the meantime, readers can check out our previous coverage of the game right here.

Are you happy to see HMs ditched from Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl? How do you feel about the changes to the original DS games? Let us know in the comments or share your thoughts directly on Twitter at @Marcdachamp to talk all things gaming!

Super Mario World Soundtrack Remaster Spoils Original’s Lo-fi Brilliance

Image: Nintendo

A group of Super Mario World fans are currently remastering the SNES platformer’s soundtrack (h/t Chris Kohler) with high-quality versions of the original samples. But if you’re hoping for some grand, orchestral versions of tracks you’ve loved for decades, these really aren’t that.

The samples were made available by the “Gigaleak,” a massive (and unofficial) dumping of Nintendo files that took the internet by storm last year. Among those files was the source code for Super Mario World’s 2002 re-release on the Game Boy Advance, which wouldn’t you know it, also included the original instruments used for the SNES music. From there, it was simply a matter of replacing the compressed sounds with their lossless equivalents to create these “remastered” tracks.

But these technically high-quality songs don’t quite live up to the classic SNES game’s. Take the “Forest of Illusion” theme, for example. Gone are the original’s soft tones, replaced with a cacophony of reverberating melodies that sounds more like someone went too hard on Fruity Loops effects than a comforting walk through some foggy woods.

The new “Swimming” track has the same problem. Being able to hear every single instrument clearly and perfectly makes for an overbearing soundscape that feels too crowded.

And don’t even get me started on the “Athletic” theme. It feels like a player piano version of an iconic track.

That said, we can’t blame these specific creators. They’re literally just plugging new instruments into old compositions and letting them rock, and on some level, I respect the desire to drag these songs (kicking and screaming though they may be) into the 21st century.

The problem is that these sounds were, I assume, largely chosen by legendary Super Mario World composer Koji Kondo because they sounded good at lower quality. These days, studios have Blu-ray discs and state-of-the-art soundcards, but development in 1991 was all about working around the restrictions of both limited memory and now-archaic audio technology. It’s why sprites from earlier eras don’t look as good on high-definition monitors as they did on CRT televisions: they were made with those disadvantages in mind.

These remastered Super Mario World tracks don’t work for the same reason I’d rather listen to a busker play an original song on an untuned acoustic guitar than an orchestra bang away at some top 40 hit on their expensive brass and woodwinds. The medium by which art is produced and portrayed is just as important as its technical fidelity. Sure, these “high-quality” and “lossless” samples might sound good on their own, but when combined on modern equipment, they lose all the heart and soul of the originals.

Still, if they’re your sort of thing, you can listen to a bunch of these remastered tracks here. It seems inevitable that someone’s going to plug them into a ROM of the original game, which should make for an… interesting experience.
