Apple’s Website Suggests M2 and M2 Pro Mac Announcements Were Originally Set for Fall 2022

Information embedded within Apple’s website suggests that this week’s new Mac announcements, including the M2 Pro and M2 Max chips, were initially set to be unveiled in October or November of last year.

As reported by Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber, the file name for a short mini keynote-styled video that Apple released following the announcement of the updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini includes the year 2022, suggesting the video may have been initially set to premiere last year. The video, over 18 minutes long, looks like the digital Apple events the company has been holding for the previous few years.

Some have speculated the 18-minute video was a segment cut out from a larger event the company was planning to hold in October or November 2022 that included more than the announcements of new M2 Pro and M2 Max Macs. Also spotted on Twitter, the AR files for the new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models were compiled in October 2022, three months before the new Macs were announced.

Typically, every fall, Apple holds an event in September to announce its latest iPhones and Apple Watch models. In the run-up to the fall of 2022, rumors were increasingly suggesting that Apple was planning to hold two events between September and December: one for the iPhone and Apple Watch and another for the Mac and iPad.

The latter event was to be focused entirely on updated Apple silicon Macs and iPads, including updated 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros and the next-generation iPad Pro, according to rumors circulating at the time. In September, Bloomberg‘s Mark Gurman reported that Apple had canceled plans to hold a second digital event in the fall and would instead release the remaining products for 2022 through press releases on its website.

In October, Apple announced an updated iPad Pro with M2 and the redesigned 10th-generation entry-level iPad via press releases. In mid-Decemeber, Gurman reported that the new Macs were now slated for a launch in “early” 2023.

The new 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pros have options for either the M2 Pro or M2 Max chip, building on the performance of the M1 Pro and M1 Max. The new chips allow for even faster performance and a higher 96GB capacity of unified memory with the M2 Max. The new Macs also now support 8K external displays thanks to a more advanced HDMI port, and the 16-inch model has the longest battery life of any Mac.

Apple this week also announced a new Mac mini, featuring the same design as the previous-generation model but now with M2 or M2 Pro. The new Mac mini and MacBook Pros are available for pre-order on Apple’s website and will begin arriving to customers on Tuesday, January 24.

Street Fighter 5 revealed to originally have 6 seasons of DLC content but was cut down

And then we ended up with 5 seasons

Saying that Street Fighter 5 got off to a rough start is putting it lightly, and Capcom themselves were apparently ready to jump ship early.

Game Informer recently released a new article going through Street Fighter’s 35-year history where it was revealed SF5 was originally planned to feature 6 seasons of new DLC content before getting cut back.

The information comes from Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama, who came on to also direct SF5 after it had launched.

“Street Fighter 5 was originally planned to have six seasons, but then plans ended up changing, and we were told we could only make up to season four,” said Nakayama via Game Informer.

Unfortunately, the director doesn’t go into further detail as to why the cuts were made or when that decision was put in place, but there are some easy inferences to make.

With SF5 underperforming in its launch sales and continuing to struggle through its second year in 2017, it would make sense that Capcom would scale back their plans for the game and move on from it sooner, and then there was also the entire Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite debacle later that year too.

But wait, you might be asking, “Street Fighter 5 ended up with 5 seasons right?”

That is correct though that final season getting to happen at all was apparently indeed thanks to the fans and the positive reception of Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition.

We almost missed out on all of this

Players came very close it seems to completely missing out on Dan, Rose, Oro, Akira and Luke, which is pretty jarring to think about now, especially since only 1 of them is on the launch roster of Street Fighter 6.

Season 5 itself wasn’t the only shakeup Capcom made to the game either, as longtime Producer Yoshinori Ono left the company after the announcement — although there’s no new information present to explain why that was.

The developers also drastically changed their communication methods with fans that went over so we’ll they’ll likely continue a similar approach going forward.

“Starting with Season 5, we changed the structure of the team, and we learned that we wanted to take on a more direct communication style with the audience and players of the game,” said Nakayama. “We received a lot of positive feedback about that. We realized that is very important for our audience.”

This revelation leaves players with a brand new question they didn’t have before being who would have been included in Season 6?”

Unless the devs eventually come out and say it, we’ll likely never know the answer, or there’s a real possibility that character choices weren’t even planned out that far by the time cuts were made.

There could have been some of the fighters who had files datamined out of SF5 like Sodom, but that may remain a mystery.

As things stand now, Street Fighter 5 wrapped up with 45 characters (46 if you count Eleven) and in a completely different state than where it was at almost 7 years ago.

It would have been cool to see the game reach an even 50. That’s still a lot better than 40 though.

Tales Of Arise Was Not Originally Intended To Be A “Tales Of” Game

Japanese outlet denfaminicogamer recently interviewed the development members of the Atlus-developed turn-based JRPG, Soul Hackers 2, and the Bandai Namco-developed action JRPG Tales of Arise. Plenty of intriguing conversational topics, including history regarding Tales of Arise’s development, are brought up. Producer Yusuke Tomizawa and Director Hirokazu Kagawa from Bandai Namco were present.

Perhaps the most thought-provoking trivia is how early on in its development, Tales of Arise was not supposed to be a “Tales of” game at all. Instead, the title was simply called “Arise,” with the intention of creating a brand-new IP developed by the Tales of team. It was such an innovative project that they weren’t sure if they should affix it to the Tales of IP.

Obviously, they ultimately decided to steer from that path, but it is potentially worth wondering how events could have drastically changed if this wasn’t a Tales of game. Tales of Arise does feel significantly different from previous entries due to its altered approach to combat, presentation, and more minute factors, so I could imagine it as not tied to the brand. Still, I’m glad it is.

Thanks to our team’s Ryuji for translating and sharing this noteworthy information.

In case you missed it, over 2,000 Tales of songs are making their way to streaming services.

Tales of Arise is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One, and PC.

“Tales of Arise Beyond the Dawn” was recently trademarked in Europe.

We recently discussed the number of Tales of games that have never been localized and those that have never been ported, making most of the franchise notably inaccessible to contemporary audiences.

Tales of Symphonia Remastered will launch Westward for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch on February 17, 2023.

Tales of Symphonia was initially released for the Gamecube worldwide before receiving a Japanese-exclusive PlayStation 2 version that added more content. That same version would launch worldwide for PlayStation 3 and then eventually PC via Steam. This upcoming remaster is using the latest versions as the basis, though several new features are arriving, such as skippable events and improved maritime navigation.

Whoopi Goldberg doubles down on controversial Holocaust claim: It ‘wasn’t originally’ about race

Whoopi Goldberg has not renounced her unpopular views on the Holocaust, despite them getting her suspended from ABC’s “The View” earlier this year.

In a new interview with U.K. paper The Times, the actress and daytime talk show co-host doubled down on her opinion that the Nazi’s didn’t originally target Jews based on race during the Holocaust.

During the discussion, Goldberg also insisted that the Nazis targeted people of African descent as well as the Jews because they were physically different. She even suggested that Jews had an easier time blending in with white people and hiding from the Nazis than Black people.

‘THE VIEW’ HOST WHOOPI GOLDBERG CLAIMS HOLOCAUST WASN’T ABOUT RACE: ‘THESE ARE TWO WHITE GROUPS’

In her write-up of the interview, Times columnist Janice Turner stated, “Even now she does not understand why her remarks offended. She insists Jewish people themselves are divided about whether they are a race or a religion.”

Goldberg, whose original name is Caryn Elaine Johnson, segued into the topic after explaining that her stage name Whoopi Goldberg comes from a “distant Jewish ancestor.” She then started speaking candidly about her perspective on the Jewish experience.

She told Turner, “My best friend said, ‘Not for nothing is there no box on the census for the Jewish race. So that leads me to believe that we’re probably not a race.’”

Turner told readers that she pushed back on Goldberg in the interview: “But the point here, I say, is [the] Nazis saw Jews as a race.”

Whoopi provided a counterargument, saying, “Yes, but that’s the killer, isn’t it? The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them? They’re Nazis. Why believe what they’re saying?”

Turner replied with the question, “But since the Nazis devised racial laws aimed specifically at Jews, wasn’t the Holocaust about race?” Though the actress responded, saying, “It wasn’t originally.”

WHOOPI GOLDBERG ISSUES APOLOGY FOR HOLOCAUST COMMENTS: ‘I STAND CORRECTED’

ABC’s ‘The View’ hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Joy Behar have repeatedly had to issue on-air apologies after sparking outrage with their comments

She continued: “Remember who they were killing first. They were not killing racial; they were killing physical. They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And then they made this decision.”

The Times interview debate wasn’t finished there. Turner said, “But the Nazis measured the heads and noses of Jews to ‘prove’ they were a distinct race,” but Goldberg responded, “They did that to black people too. But it doesn’t change the fact that you could not tell a Jew on a street. You could find me. You couldn’t find them.”

Referring back to her controversial comments on “The View,” Goldberg told Turner, “That was the point I was making. But you would have thought that I’d taken a big old stinky dump on the table, butt naked.”

Whoopi made similar comments during an episode of ABC daytime talk show, “The View” in February, where she insisted to her stunned co-hosts that the Holocaust “isn’t about race.”

At the time, co-host Joy Behar asked, “What is it about?” to which Goldberg replied, “It’s about man’s inhumanity to man, that’s what it’s about.” Co-host Ana Navarro pushed back, stating, “But it’s about a White supremacist going after Jews and Gypsies,” though Goldberg insisted, “But these are two White groups of people.”

After the episode, ABC News president Kim Godwin suspended Goldberg from the show for two weeks.

Fallout: New Vegas Was Originally Going to Be a ‘Big Expansion’ For Fallout 3

Fallout: New Vegas definitely stands on its own as a full game, but it was originally conceptualized as a huge expansion for Fallout 3. In a Fallout retrospective video posted by Bethesda, Bethesda executive producer and Fallout 3 director Todd Howard explained how New Vegas came to be.

Fallout 3 comes out and it’s a really, really big hit for the company, and they’re like, ‘Okay so what’s the followup?’, and I was like, ‘Well we’re doing Skyrim, so [then] it’ll be Fallout 4, and there was a push like… ‘We shoud do a big expansion pack or something like that. Are there companies that we could have do it?’ and we knew the folks at Obsidian, and there was sort of this immediate [thought that] there’s only one group we would really want to do this. And it actually started as a big expansion pack for Fallout 3, and I felt really strongly it should be its own game.

Fallout fans are definitely glad the project turned into a full game, as Fallout: New Vegas is one of the greatest open world games of all time. Microsoft now owns New Vegas developer Obsidian, making a potential follow-up a possibility. However, just last week, Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart said the studio isn’t working on a Fallout game right now, but “there’s not a question” about doing it if the opportunity arose.

Instead, Obsidian is preparing to release Pentiment, a 16th century mystery game set in Bavaria. The game is coming to Xbox and PC on November 15. If you’re interested, you can check out our interview with Obsidian developer Josh Sawyer.

Ford says the F-150 Lightning is more powerful than it originally announced

Ford just started shipping its electric F-150 Lightning on April 26th, but it already has a surprise for soon-to-be owners: all versions of the truck will have higher horsepower than it originally announced, and the standard range model will have an even higher payload capacity, according to a press release from the company. While that’s good news for anyone who’s already got a pre-order, it could end up increasing the FOMO for those who don’t, and can’t get one — Ford stopped taking pre-orders for the truck in December, and is currently figuring out how to reach its goal of producing 150,000 Lightnings per year.

When Ford announced its electric pickup in May 2021, the company estimated the standard battery pack version would make 426 horsepower, and the extended range version would make 563. Now that it’s actually building them, those numbers have gotten a bump: the standard range will produce 452 horsepower, and the extended will get a whopping 580 horsepower. For context, the V8 turbocharged diesels that Ford puts in its Super Duty trucks (think F-250 to F-450) top out around 475 horsepower — though those engines do make 1,050 pound-feet of torque, which is more than the 775 pound-feet the Lightning can do.

The payload capacity for the truck, or how much weight it can hold in the bed, cab, and frunk, has also gotten a bump. Ford’s announcement says that “properly equipped F-150 Lightning pickups can now haul an extra 235 pounds for a total 2,235 pounds of maximum available hauling capability.” There is a bit of mystery here though — when Ford announced the Lightning, it said that only the standard-range model could haul 2,000 pounds. The extended range’s extra batteries meant it was limited to a maximum of 1,800 pounds. Ford didn’t immediately respond to The Verge’s request for comment about whether that model is also getting a payload capacity bump.

It’s also worth noting that these figures are likely to be best-case numbers. Ford’s press release notes they’re calculated from the “peak performance of the electric motor(s) at peak battery power,” so your truck may make less horsepower 250 miles into a trip than it will fresh off the charger. Ford also says that “horsepower, torque, payload, towing and targeted EPA-estimated range are independent attributes and may not be achieved simultaneously,” which again makes sense — trucks just won’t be as zippy when they’re hauling a 7,700-pound trailer (the maximum the standard-range model is rated for).

Despite those caveats, it’s still pretty neat that the F-150 Lightning is even more powerful than Ford originally predicted. That’s kind of been the story with this truck; in March, Ford announced that the extended-range Lightning could go about 30 miles further on a charge than it predicted. While it may be quite a while before you can walk into a dealership and buy one (or pay a scalper for one), the F-150 Lightning continues to be quite an interesting EV.
