CHP Chasing Black Car From Riverside to Orange County – NBC Los Angeles

The California Highway Patrol was in pursuit of a black vehicle in Orange County Monday night.

Newschopper4 was over the chase around 10:30 p.m. in the Anaheim Hills area, with a black car driving at slow speeds on the 91 Freeway westbound. The car had been leading authorities for about 20 minutes at that stage.

The pursuit began related to a vehicle code violation in Riverside County, the CHP said. When the car refused to pull over, the pursuit started.

The car was traveling at around 55 mph on the freeway, so it was not a high-speed chase.

Around 10:47 p.m., the car pulled off the freeway onto surface streets in the Buena Park area and began to drive slightly more erratically, occasionally stopping suddenly.

On one of those stops, the black car came to a halt in the middle of the street, before a rear passenger door popped open and a woman jumped out of the car.

Internet enjoys Thunder/Hawks orange jersey fiasco, our eyes not so much

One very wide, orange-jerseyed player takes the court. Oh, wait …
Image: AP

We already knew that the NBA had too many uniforms, but the Thunder took things to a new level on Friday night against the Hawks, wearing different uniforms in each half of their game against Atlanta.

There was a good reason for the change, namely that the NBA has too many damn uniforms. The Hawks showed up on the court in Oklahoma City wearing their (checks notes) Icon Jerseys, while the Thunder donned their (checks notes again) Statement Jerseys.

Image: AP

The result was an incredibly stupid matchup of red against orange.

Incredibly, the Thunder — the home team, with the ability to wear any uniform they could muster — tried to blame the fiasco on the Hawks “wearing the incorrect uniform color for the game.”

Apparently, the Hawks only brought red uniforms on their road trip, almost as if they thought they might be able to get away with such a zany concept as “road uniforms.” The Thunder might have been incredulous at this, but did graciously switch at halftime to white uniforms — no, sorry, (checks notes one more time) Association Jerseys.

The Thunder outscored the Hawks, 63-55, in orange, and edged Atlanta, 55-54, in white, for a 118-109 final.

The worst part of this is that it wasn’t just a freak occurrence. The uniform choices were made in advance and the situation was entirely avoidable.

In 2013, the Hawks-Knicks clash of red and orange was a much more understandable mistake. New York was wearing its orange alternates for just the fourth time, and NBA rules at the time required the home team to, get this, “wear light colored jerseys, and the visitors dark jerseys, unless otherwise approved.”

The orange had been designated as a light-colored alternate jersey, and NBA vice president Tim Frank declared, “Going forward, we’ll ensure that the opponent wears a more distinguishing color when the Knicks wear orange.”

He didn’t say anything about the Thunder wearing orange, though.

Sorry, not orange. “Sunset.” Is this a basketball league or an L.L. Bean catalog?

Crews battled smoke and heavy flames until they were finally able to contain the blaze.

The victims’ names have not yet been released and officials are still working to determine the cause of the fire. Deputies said the deaths are considered suspicious.

Michael Schadow, who lives in the neighborhood where the fire took place, said it’s tragic to see what happened at his neighbor’s home.

“We always are out walking the neighborhood at night or early in the morning time, so it’s really shocking to find out if people have gone through and lost their lives,” Schadow said.

Schadow has lived there for decades and said the blaze was unlike anything he’d ever seen.

“I’ve been here 23 three years and never seen a fire like this,” Schadow said.

No other details were immediately available.

American Airlines Will Fly A321T To Orange County

American Airlines and JetBlue Airways have just announced a slew of new routes as part of their new Northeast strategic alliance. While I’ll cover those new routes big-picture in a separate post, I wanted to dedicate a post to what I find to be the most interesting announcement.

American will fly A321Ts between JFK & SNA

As of June 2, 2021, American Airlines will launch daily nonstop flights between New York (JFK) and Orange County (SNA). We don’t yet know the exact schedules or frequencies — I’d assume one daily flight, but we’ll find out more in the coming days as these flights go on sale.

The most surprising part of this new route is the aircraft American will use — American plans to fly an A321T between New York and Orange County. For those of you not familiar with this subfleet of A321s, these are the planes that have historically been operated exclusively from New York to Los Angeles and San Francisco.

These planes are unique, as they feature just 102 seats, and include four seating options:

  • There are 10 first class fully flat reverse herringbone seats with direct aisle access, in a 1-1 configuration
  • There are 20 business class fully flat seats, in a 2-2 configuration
  • There are 72 economy seats, with 36 of those seats being Main Cabin Extra, featuring extra legroom

American Airlines’ A321T first class

Seeing American schedule A321Ts in this market is both surprising and not surprising:

  • On the one hand, this has historically been reserved for the transcon markets that are known to have a ton of premium demand, particularly among business travelers and the entertainment crowd
  • While Orange County is quite affluent, it doesn’t have quite the entertainment or business demand of the other markets; I would have expected to see an A321T between New York and Burbank before something like this

American Airlines’ A321T business class

Could we see more A321T routes from American?

American has a significant surplus of A321Ts, and it seems like that will continue to be the case:

  • This is especially true during the pandemic, given the complete lack of demand between New York and California
  • In general there had been rumors of American reconfiguring A321Ts into a more standard configuration, though there has been nothing concrete there

With the new American & JetBlue Northeast partnership, it seems that we can expect a reduction in American service between New York and Los Angeles:

  • American and JetBlue will operate a combined 14 daily flights between the New York-area (JFK & EWR) and Los Angeles (LAX); that flying will be split pretty evenly between the two airlines
  • Previously American operated up to a dozen flights per day in the market using its own A321Ts

American & JetBlue will split flying between JFK & LAX

It goes without saying that American will have more A321Ts in the future than it needs, assuming American and JetBlue do in fact plan to decrease transcon service to the extent that has been revealed.

Only time will tell whether American chooses to launch more A321T routes, or if some of these planes will simply be reconfigured.

Bottom line

American Airlines will launch daily A321T flights between New York and Orange County as of the summer of 2021. This will only be the third route to have this aircraft regularly scheduled.

This announcement definitely caught me off guard — while Orange County is a premium leisure market, this still seems surprising.

We’ll have to see what the future holds for American’s A321Ts — will the airline reconfigure A321Ts, fly these planes in more markets, or eventually increase service from JFK to LAX and SFO.

Are you surprised to see American flying A321Ts between JFK & SNA?

Vaccines can start March 15 for people ages 16-64 with certain health conditions – Orange County Register

State officials announced Friday, Feb. 12, that in one month, administrators can begin coronavirus vaccinations for anyone younger than 65 with a medical condition that increases their chances of having a deadly case of COVID-19.

Starting March 15, health care providers across California may vaccinate people ages 16 to 64 who are at highest risk if they catch the coronavirus, including people with cancer, chronic lung disease and various heart maladies.

Also included are pregnant women, people with Down syndrome and people who are severely obese, have Type 2 diabetes or have had an organ transplant, among other conditions.

“We recognize that certain individuals across many of the different categories, whether they’re work or aged based, have additional risk factors, based on various disabilities (and) various conditions,” California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said to reporters Friday afternoon.

The announcement came one turbulent month after public health departments and private networks in Southern California broadened vaccination campaigns to include seniors age 65 amid short supplies and huge demand.

Adding people ages 16 to 64 with health conditions will heap up to 6 million more eligible people on top of the millions of seniors and health care workers who can book appointments for shots today, Ghaly said.

“We are still very much dealing with the scarcity of vaccines,” he said.

But while the supply outlook is murky, Ghaly said administrators are now clear to get more doses out of vaccine vials already in the state. Those on the frontlines administering shots can now stretch Pfizer vials out into six doses instead of five, and Moderna vials can now yield 11 doses instead of 10.

“The hope is that supplies increase and that we work on our communication and engagement to make sure individuals feel comfortable and secure getting vaccinated, and that all comes together as soon as possible,” Ghaly said.

Doses being administered by Los Angeles health officials ran out earlier than expected this week, forcing the closures of five mass vaccination sites.

Officials in Orange County, meanwhile, said Tuesday they would continue to focus their efforts on seniors and wait another two weeks, at least, before offering the shots to educators, food services workers and others who are next up to get them.

As of Feb. 12, there have been 5.5 million doses of both the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna shots administered statewide, according to the Department of Public Health, which notes the figures “do not represent true day-to-day change as reporting may be delayed.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that just under 8 million doses have been delivered to California, and nearly 8.2 million doses have been shipped.

OC won’t start vaccinating teachers, food workers for at least two weeks – Orange County Register

Orange County will wait at least another two weeks before offering COVID-19 vaccine shots to educators, food service workers and others who are newly eligible under state guidelines, county Health Officer Dr. Clayton Chau said Tuesday. Feb. 9.

The additional time will help the county get through a waiting list of people 65 and older who haven’t been vaccinated yet, Chau told the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

So far, about 100,000 of Orange County’s seniors, plus most of the county’s health care workers who wanted shots, have been inoculated, Chau said – but those two groups together equal more than 700,000 people, and vaccine supplies continue to be limited.

Chau said with the county getting only about 37,000 doses a week from the state, inviting more people to compete for them would just lead to more frustration.

“We’ve only at best vaccinated a quarter of them (seniors) – I cannot open up the door for more of them to come in when we still have the same number of vaccines,” he said.

After kicking off vaccinations of health care workers in mid-December, Orange County was one of the first to offer shots to anyone 65 and older starting about a month ago.

Chau followed the recommendation of the county’s vaccine task force and opened appointments to seniors after seeing statistics from about a dozen hospitals that showed about three quarters of the people hospitalized with serious complications or dying from COVID-19 were in the older age group.

The county’s vaccine task force, as well as a supervisors’ ad hoc committee, agreed with the decision to stay focused for the next two weeks on those 65 and older, especially those most vulnerable and in parts of the county that have active hot spots of the virus, Chau said.

Statewide, Orange County is second behind Los Angeles County with the largest percentage of residents in the 65-and-older bracket, he said. Neighboring Long Beach has been able to vaccinate its health care workers and smaller population of seniors and has now opened up appointments to teachers, Chau said.

Orange County’s health agency gets about 20% of the doses designated for the county (most go to major medical providers that serve multiple counties and pharmacy chains), so Chau has to rely on third parties and the state for information on how the rest of the vaccines get used.

Supervisor Lisa Bartlett said the state’s vaccine database is plagued with incomplete or inaccurate information, including missing ZIP codes of many residents who were inoculated, which is making it harder for county health officials to figure out where to target outreach and set up clinics.

“The state database is so erroneous it’s affecting our second dose levels,” she said, adding that Los Angeles County this week had to halt new appointments to catch up on follow-up shots.

“Until we can get accurate ZIP code information we’re not really going to know what’s happening in underserved areas,” she added.

Chau told supervisors that in addition to the super sites at Disneyland and Soka University and a weekend mobile POD (point of dispensing), the county health agency is working with community clinics and nonprofits to bring vaccinations to people in neighborhoods with high infection rates or who may have trouble getting to the two big sites.

Officials are planning vaccination sites in Santa Ana and Anaheim, which include neighborhoods with some of the county’s highest infection rates, and additional pods may be coming to Santa Ana College and Christ Cathedral in Garden Grove, Chau said.

The Othena platform the county has for people to register for vaccines and make appointments last week added support in Spanish and on Tuesday added Vietnamese and is “moving swiftly” to add Korean and Chinese, Chau said.

The county’s hotline, 714-834-2000, can help seniors who aren’t tech savvy with the process.

“We have had staff able to speak Vietnamese and Spanish on the hotline,” Chau said, adding county officials recognize that might not meet demand and are in process of contracting with a call center and training its staff to add to the number of people the hotline can serve and in what languages.

Chau has asked for residents’ patience as the county works through the challenges of vaccinating about 3.1 million people with a limited supply, and he repeated that request Tuesday, though he said he hopes for many the wait will end sooner rather than later.

A panel of the federal Food and Drug Administration is set to meet Feb. 26 to consider allowing use of Johnson & Johnson’s new vaccine, which only requires one shot and would help ease the supply problem.

“If the FDA authorizes it, presumably the following Monday or Tuesday (March 1 or 2) we should have our first shipment of Johnson & Johnson in Orange County,” Chau said.

“I look forward to a month from now when we have plenty of vaccine … to offer to any of our citizens who want the vaccine.”

Orange County readies second mass vaccination site at Soka University, tweaks appointment system – Orange County Register

Orange County staff and volunteers are gearing up for the opening of a mass vaccination center at Soka University in Aliso Viejo on Saturday.

It joins the first center the county opened last week at Disneyland that has been handling about 3,000 appointments a day.

“Bring your umbrellas, plan for rain, if you’re in a walker, you have to take those things into account,” county spokeswoman Molly Nichelson said. Staff and volunteers will be on hand to help visitors from the campus parking structure off Wood Canyon Drive to a gym nearby, where vaccines will take place.

The county has enough vaccines and staff on hand for a confident launch of the new Soka Super POD (point-of-distribution) this weekend, said spokeswoman Molly Nichelson. Officials have said they would not open new locations until volunteers and doses were available to make it worth it; five sites are ultimately expected.

But public health officials are tempering expectations and asking for patience after the Othena appointment system got off to a rocky start among its target users: seniors age 65 and older.

The Health Care Agency said this week the appointment process had been “simplified” to stop users from needing to constantly refresh Othena on their computers and phones in hopes of landing a slot.

For users who have completed registration, Othena will email eligible groups around 10 a.m. each day, alerting them an appointment is available to them.

Dr. Clayton Chau, Health Care Agency director and county health officer, said staff members are considering a person’s coronavirus risk while assigning appointments. Staff also will send patients to whichever super site is closest, he said.

But if users don’t respond through Othena within a few hours, they’ll be placed back in the virtual queue, Nichelson said.

“They really have to pay attention to those emails that come through,” she said.

The Health Care Agency has set up a hotline at 714-834-2000 to field questions about Othena, vaccine appointments and other related issues during weekday business hours.

At this point, people who qualify for a vaccine and want an appointment can’t call to set one up, but can call for help in registering on Othena.

“We view that this’ll be able to make a us more nimble,” she said.

Chau advised seniors having trouble with Othena to ask their doctor or staff at a local senior center for help.

And super sites aren’t the only option, Chau said. The Health Care Agency also is ramping up smaller-scale “mobile” vaccination clinics, which have parachuted in for a day at a couple of seniors centers with more in the works.

Meanwhile, the county is still striking a balance of marshaling vaccines, staff and volunteers to get doses into the arms of the county’s most exposed and vulnerable to COVID-19 efficiently and fairly.

During a virtual town hall Thursday with Assemblywoman Cottie Petrie-Norris, Chau said Orange County still doesn’t have enough vaccines and repeated the need for letting older seniors get their shots first, particularly those with chronic health conditions that make the coronavirus more dangerous to them.

“We are asking the community to be patient, let us give the vaccine to those 75 and older and those 65 and older with chronic problems,” he said. “Let us protect them first, because they are the ones that if they get infected, they end up in hospitals more than others.”

On Thursday, Orange County gave vaccine administrators the go-ahead to resume using Moderna vaccine lot 41L20A, which was put on hold by the state Department of Public Health after a handful of allergic reactions in San Diego last week. About 5,000 people in Orange County received shots from that batch, but there were no known adverse effects, the Heath Care Agency said earlier this week.

After an investigation, state health officials said late Wednesday there was “no scientific basis to continue the pause.”
