2021 AMAs: BTS wins artist of the year at American Music Awards; Olivia Rodrigo scores new artist award | Full winners list

LOS ANGELES — Korean pop sensation BTS was high like the moon at the 2021 American Music Awards, scoring the coveted artist of the year win.

“Four years ago, we gave this first-time-ever TV live performance at this stage, AMAs, it was ‘DNA.’ We were too excited and nervous at time, and it’s been a long and amazing ride since then,” said the boy group’s leader RM. “We’ll never take it for granted.”

BTS took home two more big awards — favorite pop duo or group and favorite pop song for “Butter” — and performed with Coldplay on a raucous “My Universe.” An earlier scheduled performance of “Butter” by BTS and Megan Thee Stallion was scrapped after the rapper cited personal reasons for dropping out, so the group performed the hit single on their own.

Performers

Along with the “My Universe” and “Butter” performances, AMA highlights include Jennifer Lopez’s pre-taped “On My Way” from her upcoming romantic comedy “Marry Me.”

Silk Sonic’s Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak kicked off the awards on a funky, R&B and pre-taped note with their “Smokin Out the Window.”

Olivia Rodrigo performed her hit “traitor” live on a stage covered with flowers and Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean brought a little country to the stage when they sang their pre-taped duet “If I Didn’t Love You.” With a little help from Julieta Venegas and Tainy, Bad Bunny performed their hit “Lo Siento BB :/.”

Among live performances, Italian band Måneskin made their U.S. awards show debut with their viral hit “Beggin.'” Chlöe of Chloe x Halle floated down onto the stage to perform her hit debut single as a soloist “Have Mercy,” swinging her hair and twerking. Mickey Guyton got loud cheers while singing her patriotic song “All American” in a silvery dress, periodically screaming out “How y’all doing?”

For the older viewers, New Edition and New Kids on the Block performed together. The Boston-based groups took turns with the hits, trading hits: “You Got It (The Right Stuff”), “Candy Girl,” “Step By Step,” “Mr. Telephone Man” and uniting for “Can You Stand the Rain,” “Is This the End,” “Hangin’ Tough” and “If It Isn’t Love.”

Kane Brown performed “One Mississippi” from Tennessee State University. Soulful new artist of the year nominee Giveon and relentlessly experimental rapper Tyler, the Creator also performed.

MORE: What to know about 2021 AMA performances

Host Cardi B in a fur headdress revved up the crowd, admitting she was sweating.

“I’m a little nervous,” said the host after listing all the performances planned. “We’re going to celebrate everybody.”

Later her song “Up” was named favorite hip-hop song.

She said she planned to be herself when she takes the stage.

“Oh the pressure on me! They got a lot of pressure,” the rap superstar told “Good Morning America” Friday. “I mean, how can I excite the audience? Should I show my child? No, no, no, I’m now not gonna do that. I don’t know, I’m just gonna be myself.”

The “I Like It” and “Bodak Yellow” rapper admitted that she’s feeling nervous for the big night but said she loves the opportunity to host.

“Some just awakes in me [when I perform]. But when I’m on TV shows, for some reason I just get so nervous. Like, oh my goodness,” she said.

Machine Gun Kelly, JoJo Siwa and Brandy were among the Hollywood stars who revealed the 2021 AMA winners.

They were joined by Ansel Elgort & Rachel Zegler, Anthony Ramos, Billy Porter, JB Smoove, Liza Koshy, Marsai Martin, Madelyn Cline and Winnie Harlow, producers announced Friday.

*Country artist Morgan Wallen, who was condemned by the music industry for using a racial slur in a video that was leaked in February, was included in this year’s ceremony, showrunners said in a statement.

Ivy Getty’s wedding to Tobias Engel may have broken family curse

Billionaire heiress Ivy Getty may be breaking the cycle of tragedy in her family.

The 26-year-old just got married to her photographer boyfriend Tobias Engel in an over-the-top three day extravaganza in her hometown of San Francisco — complete with a glass-mirrored wedding dress by John Galliano.

Nancy Pelosi officiated and luminaries in attendance included singer Olivia Rodrigo, Princess Olympia of Greece, California Gov. Gavin Newsom, San Francisco mayor London Breed and Ivy’s maid of honor, “Queen’s Gambit” star Anya Taylor-Joy. Mark Ronson was DJ at a pre-wedding ’60s Mod-themed bash, and Earth, Wind and Fire performed.

It’s a fairy-tale new beginning for Ivy, who last year lost her father, John Gilbert Getty, to a drug overdose, and her beloved grandmother, Ann, to a heart attack. Ivy also had a bit of a chaotic upbringing.

“John Gilbert Getty was a dysfunctional parent to the point where Ann took over and decided Ivy was going to live with her and [her husband] Gordon,” an insider told The Post last year. “It was kind of like a modern version of the poor little rich girl. Ivy’s mother was not really around too much.”

Ivy’s jewelry designer mother, Alyssa Boothby, also known as Alyssa Jewels, was at the wedding. But a guest who attended all three days of the celebration told The Post she never saw the two interact.

Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi officiated the ceremony at City Hall in San Francisco.
Jose Villa/Vogue Magazine

“There doesn’t seem a lot of love lost there,” the guest said. “[Boothby] is rarely, if ever, mentioned by Ivy. Ann raised her and they adored each other.” Boothby’s Linked In profile indicates that she works as a full-time food server at the Presidio in San Francisco.

The memory of Ivy’s late loved ones resonated at the wedding in a sweet, not sad, way, according to one guest, who said that her veil was decorated with images of her dad and his guitar and her grandmother. The deceased were also remembered by name in the wedding program, she said.

“My grandma and father were by my side gagging with joy as much as I was,” Ivy wrote on her Instagram after the event.

John Gilbert Getty, Ivy’s 52-year-old musician dad, died of heart conditions triggered by an accidental fentanyl overdose in a San Antonio hotel room on Nov. 20, 2020. Her grandmother Ann Getty, who raised Ivy in the Getty mansion where her reception took place, died at 79, two months before her own son passed.

Ivy told Vogue that her late grandmother inspired her choice of wedding-dress designer: “My grandmother always wore John Galliano’s designs,” she said. “After my grandmother’s passing — she was really more like a mother to me — I felt this connection to John. I knew I wanted him to create the dress for my wedding.”

Still, the guest said, “[The wedding] was not what I expected or what you’d think from seeing all the photos. It was done so well that it didn’t feel big, and the memories of John and Ann were so uplifting and loving. It was just exquisite and filled with friends of Ivy and Toby who they’ve all known forever and who want the best for them. It wasn’t some superficial society wedding where everyone is saying under their breath, ‘This will never last.’ It seemed like a genuine love match.”

The wedding party included “Queen’s Gambit” actress Anya Taylor-Joy (left of bride), who was maid of honor.
Jose Villa/Vogue Magazine

Sources say Ann would be happy about Ivy’s choice of husband.

“Toby was so genuinely attentive to Ivy,” added the guest, who has known the Getty family, including Ivy’s 87-year-old grandfather, Gordon Getty, for more than four decades.

“He adores her. He wrote his own vows and they took everyone’s breath away. He said ‘I am your protector and your slave.’ It was so heartfelt. These are not just two rich kids who, like, met in Ibiza last year.”

Engel, who has been described as a tech entrepreneur and aspiring film director as well as a photographer, was born in Vienna. His parents are Peter Engel, an Austrian businessman, and Cheryl Prime, an English actress. She appeared on “Coronation Street” in 1982 and the 1990 series “Stolen.”

The couple met at London’s Fashion Week and Engel proposed at sunset in Capri.

Getty, Taylor-Joy and others partied at a pre-wedding bash with a ’60s Mod theme.
Instagram

Ivy met maid-of-honor Anya Taylor-Joy six years ago, on the actress’ first day in Los Angeles, according to The Cut.

“My baby girl got married yesterday,” Taylor-Joy wrote on Instagram Monday. “Being by your side all these years and your maid of honor has been nothing short of a privilege and your existence, nothing short of a miracle. I am so PROUD of the woman you’ve become. If you’re ever in any doubt- I have loved you and will love you, forever.

CONGRATULATIONS LIL SPICE MONKEY! You truly were the most beautiful bride.”

Ivy’s optimism was evident last year after her father’s death, when she told The Post how much she had loved him and although she was grieving, also felt grateful.

“I am filled with gratitude for everything he taught me,” she said. “My glass is half full. I think our generation [of Gettys] has been given a special opportunity to do good in the world, and we intend to take advantage of that opportunity.”

Ivy is the great-granddaughter of J. Paul Getty, the Minnesota-born founder of Getty Oil who, in the mid-20th century, was the richest man in the world — with a fortune of $1.2 billion (around $9.1 billion today). He has some 40 descendants and the family has had an outsized share of tragedy over the decades.

Ivy’s dad, John Gilbert Getty, passed away from heart conditions triggered by a fentanyl overdose in 2020.
Instagram

In 1973, John Paul Getty III — the patriarch’s 16-year-old grandson (making him Ivy’s second cousin) — was kidnapped in Rome. His abductors demanded $17 million, which his grandfather wouldn’t pay, leading his captors to cut off his right ear.

The ordeal, coupled with terrible neglect, ruined the boy’s life. At just 24, he ended up paralyzed as a result of a drug overdose. John Paul III, who was the father of actor Balthazar Getty, died in 2011, at age 55.

In 2015, Getty’s brother, Andrew Getty, died from an ulcer-related hemorrhage. He was found to have methamphetamine in his system at the time of his death.

“No one in the family calls it an overdose,” the wedding guest said. “They say he died under mysterious circumstances. That’s always the phrase.”

In addition to Ivy, the younger generation includes fashion designer August Getty, 26, who dresses icons ranging from Cher and Hailey Baldwin to Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus. Apple’s Dynamic Head Tracking Is Here If You Have Fany AirPods

Back in June, Apple introduced both lossless audio and Dolby Atmos-powered spatial audio to Apple Music. While there were restrictions on which gadgets could handle what, you didn’t need AirPods to get the benefit. However, with iOS 15’s public release, Apple’s also added Dynamic Head Tracking—and for that, you’re going to need either a pair of AirPods Pro or AirPods Max.

Quick refresher: Dolby Atmos is a specific surround sound format that allows you to simulate a three-dimensional space. What Apple refers to as spatial audio is like an extra layer on top of that thanks to Dynamic Head Tracking. How it works is, it fixes where the audio sounds like it’s coming from, regardless of where you are within that soundscape. So say you hear vocals coming from in front of you. If you turn your head to the right, the vocals will now sound like they’re coming from your left earphone. If you turn your head to the left, it’ll sound like it’s coming from your right earphone.

It’s a neat feature, but it won’t work unless you have AirPods—and the more expensive ones at that. The regular AirPods don’t support dynamic tracking; the only ones that do are the ludicrously expensive AirPods Max and the AirPods Pro. (That’s because the feature relies on accelerometers to detect your head movement.)

If you do have a pair of either the AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, all you have to do is update your iPhone or iPad to iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, respectively. (We have a handy guide on how to do that here.) Once you’ve done that, you just have to double-check that Atmos is enabled. You can do that by heading over to the Settings app, scrolling down to Music, then Audio. From there you should see the Dolby Atmos setting. Within Apple Music itself, there are also Spatial Audio playlists to get you started and Apple has since added a tutorial track featuring Olivia Rodrigo’s song “good 4 u” to demonstrate how it works.

That said, if you don’t have AirPods, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy Dolby Atmos at all. You can. It’ll just be the “normal” kind. As for how it sounds, it’s impressive but slightly less noticeable for music—especially if you’re just listening to songs for background noise. In our experience, dynamic head tracking is much more noticeable when using AirPods to watch movies, particularly action scenes. Still, if immersive audio is your thing and you’ve got the gear, it’s a neat thing to try out for yourself.
