There’s a Simple Way to Offset The Health Risks of Sitting All Day : ScienceAlert

To reduce the harmful health effects of sitting, take a 5-minute light walk every half-hour. That’s the key finding of a new study that my colleagues and I published in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

We asked 11 healthy middle-aged and older adults to sit in our lab for 8 hours – representing a standard workday – over the course of five separate days. On one of those days, participants sat for the entire 8 hours with only short breaks to use the bathroom.

On the other days, we tested a number of different strategies to break up a person’s sitting with light walking. For example, on one day, participants walked for 1 minute every half-hour. On another day, they walked for 5 minutes every hour.

Our goal was to find the least amount of walking one could do to offset the harmful health effects of sitting. In particular, we measured changes in blood sugar levels and blood pressure, two important risk factors for heart disease.

We found that a 5-minute light walk every half-hour was the only strategy that reduced blood sugar levels substantially compared with sitting all day. In particular, 5-minute walks every half-hour reduced the blood sugar spike after eating by almost 60 percent.

That strategy also reduced blood pressure by four to five points compared with sitting all day. But shorter and less frequent walks improved blood pressure too. Even just a 1-minute light walk every hour reduced blood pressure by five points.

In addition to physical health benefits, there were also mental health benefits to the walking breaks. During the study, we asked participants to rate their mental state by using a questionnaire. We found that compared with sitting all day, a 5-minute light walk every half-hour reduced feelings of fatigue, put participants in a better mood and helped them feel more energized.

We also found that even walks just once every hour were enough to boost mood and reduce feelings of fatigue.

Why it matters

People who sit for hours on end develop chronic diseases including diabetes, heart disease, dementia and several types of cancer at much higher rates than people who move throughout their day. A sedentary lifestyle also puts people at a much greater risk of early death. But just exercising daily may not reverse the harmful health effects of sitting.

Because of technological advances, the amount of time adults in industrialized countries like the US spend sitting has been steadily increasing for decades. Many adults now spend the majority of their day sitting.

This problem has only gotten worse since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. With the migration to more remote work, people are less inclined to venture out of the house these days. So it’s clear that strategies are needed to combat a growing 21st century public health problem.

Current guidelines recommend that adults should “sit less, move more.” But these recommendations don’t provide any specific advice or strategies for how often and how long to move.

Our work provides a simple and affordable strategy: Take a 5-minute light walk every half-hour. If you have a job or lifestyle where you have to sit for prolonged periods, this one behavior change could reduce your health risks from sitting.

Our study also offers clear guidance to employers on how to promote a healthier workplace. While it may seem counterintuitive, taking regular walking breaks can actually help workers be more productive than working without stopping.

What still isn’t known

Our study primarily focused on taking regular walking breaks at a light intensity. Some of the walking strategies – for example, 1-minute light walks every hour – did not lower blood sugar levels. We don’t know if more rigorous walking would have provided health benefits at these doses.

What’s next

We are currently testing over 25 different strategies for offsetting the health harms of prolonged sitting. Many adults have jobs, such as driving trucks or taxis, where they simply cannot walk every half-hour.

Finding alternative strategies that yield comparable results can provide the public with several different options and ultimately allow people to pick the strategy that works best for them and their lifestyle.

Migos member Offset breaks silence on Takeoff’s death

Offset has broken his silence on his cousin and Migos groupmate Takeoff’s death.

“The pain you have left me with is unbearable,” the “Clout” rapper, 30, wrote via Instagram Tuesday. “My heart is shattered and I have so many things to say, but I can’t find the words.”

He continued, “I’ve been going to sleep and waking up hoping that all of this is a dream, but it’s reality, and reality feels like a nightmare.”

Offset, whose real name is Kiari Kendrell Cephus, told fans that he wishes he could hug, laugh, smoke and perform with Takeoff “one last time.”

“I know someone with a soul like yours is in heaven now,” he wrote. “I hope you can see how much we love you and miss you. You have left a hole in my heart that will never be filled.”

Offset concluded his post by asking for “strength” and telling his late family member, “I love you forever.”

Takeoff was shot and killed at 810 Billiards & Bowling in Houston on Nov. 1 around 2:30 a.m.

His uncle Quavo, who was the third member of Migos, was present during the fatal incident.

Takeoff, whose real name was Kirsnick Khari Ball, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other victims were taken to nearby hospitals in private vehicles, according to Houston police.

A star-studded memorial service for Takeoff took place in Atlanta last Friday, with Drake giving a heartfelt speech and Justin Bieber performing a tribute.

Quavo, whose real name is Quavious Keyate Marshall, was not injured during the altercation that killed his nephew.

The 31-year-old formed Migos in 2008 with Takeoff and Offset, with the rap group releasing their debut single, “Versace,” three years later.

Migos has since been nominated for two Grammys for their album “Culture” and their single “Bad and Boujee,” both in 2018.

In August, the threesome sparked split speculation when Quavo and Takeoff announced their duo, Unc & Phew, as Offset continued to release solo music.

Offset, who is married to Cardi B, subsequently made headlines for unfollowing his fellow Migos members’ social media accounts.

Quavo and Takeoff addressed the breakup rumors five months later in an episode of the “Big Facts” podcast.

“We want to see our career as a duo,” the “Workin’ Me” singer told DJ Scream in October. “Because we came from a loyal family that’s supposed to work together.

“Sometimes when s—t don’t work out, it’s not meant to be,” Quavo continued at the time.

Takeoff added that they didn’t “know all the answers,” concluding, “God knows. We pray a lot so only time will tell. Ain’t nothing got to change.”

Offset, Quavo, Drake and More Grapple With His ‘Senseless’ Death – Rolling Stone

The sky was gray with rain clouds as a crowd of mourners made their way into Atlanta’s State Farm Arena to celebrate the life of the rapper Takeoff, the cornerstone of the Migos who was shot dead on November 1. The showers, the mayor of Atlanta, Andre Dickens, would tell us later, were a good omen for a funeral, meaning Takeoff, born Kirsnik Khari Ball, had been heaven bound.

As we filtered into single file lines at the lip of the building, we were made to drop our phones in sealed pouches only staff could open, a reasonable request for presence and privacy, especially in light of the gruesome spectacle Takeoff’s death became as videos circulated online. That meant when Offset, his fellow Migo and cousin, took the stage well into the service and wept for the man that lay before him in a chrome casket, his grief was bound to the arena, and we were bound to it.

“Take,” is all he could utter at first, overcome with sorrow. “I love you,” he said. “I’m sorry.” For many minutes, we watched him cry, many in the crowd cheering and shouting encouraging words. Eventually calling the loss unbearable and saying his heart is shattered, he made a raw admission: “I don’t wanna question you, God, but I don’t get you sometimes.” Then, leading a prayer, he called for fellowship. “I need to be held,” he said so vulnerably.

Quavo and Takeoff had just released their first album as a duo, Unc & Phew, named for their family ties, on October 7. A flag based on the art for that record, Only Built for Infinity Links, was laid across Takeoff’s casket. While alluding to a rift between the pair and Offset on a podcast last month, Takeoff left room for resolution: “We don’t know all the answers. God knows. We pray a lot, so only time will tell. Ain’t nothing got to change.”

Takeoff’s deep faith in God was called upon again and again in a memorial where loved ones and leaders worked to process his death out loud. “This is a 28-year-old man whose life was ended senselessly,” said his pastor of 18 years, Jesse Curney, III.  By every account, Takeoff all skill, heart, and brain. “Quavo and Offset, you might get mad at me,” warned Kevin “Coach K” Lee, co-founder of Migos’ label Quality Control, “but he was the wise one.” So how – why — could this have happened, and what are they to do now? Pop stars, gospel stars, friends, and family all wrestled with difficult questions about this tragedy, some finding possibility in their distress.

When Justin Bieber, a good friend of Quavo’s who has collaborated with Migos, appeared on stage for the first performance of the memorial, it seemed as if he would not – could not – sing. He sat uneasily on a stool while a pianist played intricately, at first, what felt like an intro, then what felt like a song. Bieber didn’t move. The words that finally escaped him were shaky — a rendition of “Ghost” from his album Justice. As he sang, he stood briefly before sitting again, eyes locked on the casket. His voice steadied, then solidified, then boomed. There was one last piano solo and one last solemn chorus before he left.

Bieber was followed by Drake, whose specific appearance, like all the others, was not listed on the simple program, printed on the back of a collage of Takeoff photos reminiscent of the Culture album artwork.  He read his prepared remarks carefully; his typical charisma dampened but not disintegrated. He recalled two poems, one by Maya Angelou, but his own words held more weight. Before recounting his days on tour with Migos in 2018, how Takeoff was zen but came alive on stage and in sync with the group, he told a story about watching the Rat Pack – Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, and Frank Sinatra – as a kid on an old TV. “I miss performing with my brothers,” said Drake. “After all these years watching Dean Martin, I realized I want to grow old with my friends. We should do that more.”

Drake had only begun to cry in his remembrance as he addressed Quality Control co-founder, Pierre “Pee” Thomas, thanking him for the leadership he provided and the family he created. But once he started to cry with a calm intensity, he didn’t stop. Pee and his partner Coach K took the stage next. Pee remembered a text he got from Takeoff that personified his spirit, one from June of last year that he revisited in recent days. “We came from nothing,” Takeoff wrote to Pee as he was getting his locs retwisted, just in a moment of gratitude. “We came through the storm,” he had said. “I love you.”

“I been asking God for the past 11 days. What’s the lesson in this?” Pee wondered out loud. He left the podium without an answer but asked the audience to keep looking.

Pee and Coach K’s remarks were followed by Offset’s heart-wrenching turn at the mic and a searing rendition of Beyonce’s “Heaven” by her mentee Chloe Bailey. The song, a pained but confident and accepting ode to the dead, was fitting to proceed with Takeoff’s mother’s turn to speak. Introduced as “Mama Take,” she seemed too proud of her son to be too troubled — how that voice, that passion for music, that faith in God had been with him since he was a baby. She only quivered for a minute when she told the crowd that she would never be the same without him, but she grew strong again when she thought about meeting him in heaven. “He can’t come back to me, but one day I will go to him,” she assured.

Takeoff’s mother was joined on stage by his younger brother and sister, as well as Quavo, whose address brought a surprising levity to the memorial. He clowned the extra-extra-large outfits they used to wear — some of which were displayed in a slideshow across arena screens. He teased Takeoff’s mom for admonishing their love of a vulgar Hot Boys CD and boasted about winning a talent show with Takeoff at the Boys & Girls Club performing “Get Your Roll On By” by the Big Timerz. Finally, he told an origin story that credited Takeoff with their path to stardom —  rapping was his plan. Quavo would have perhaps played sports.

Takeoff’s obituary read, “Takeoff would want the world to see the light in what he created and keep lifting each other up and supporting the creations people put into the world.  He’s now up with there with the stars he loved so much and remains in all our ethers on a daily basis living on through his music and the love he brought to so many.”

Like Offset did before him, he called him the innovator of their signature triplet flow, giving him the flowers he only seemed ready to receive right before his death. “He never worried about titles or credits or who got the most shine,” said Quavo. And like Takeoff’s mother before him, Quavo seemed to have found some clarity: “You’re not my nephew,” he said to Takeoff, “Not my brother, but my angel.”

As previously reported, Takeoff was shot and killed outside 810 Billiards & Bowling Houston around 2:30 a.m CST on Tuesday morning. According to information released during a press conference held by the Houston Police Department on Tuesday afternoon, the incident occurred after an altercation broke out while a group of around 40 people were standing outside the venue. Someone or someones pulled out a gun and opened fire. The Migos member was fatally struck in the head or neck area. Quavo was also present but not injured during the shooting. Two other individuals suffered non life-threatening gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital in private vehicles.

Video has surfaced of the argument that apparently led up to the shooting and it shows Quavo arguing with another man over basketball and someone throwing a punch right before the shots were fired. Another video of the chaotic aftermath shows Takeoff on the ground appearing to bleed out while Quavo and other people attempt to assist him. Takeoff was pronounced dead on the scene by paramedics. He was 28.

Takeoff’s label, Quality Control Music, has released an official statement on Instagram in the wake of the rapper’s tragic passing.

“It is with broken hearts and deep sadness that we mourn the loss of our beloved brother Kirsnick Khari Ball, known to the world as Takeoff,” the statement reads. “Senseless violence and a stray bullet has taken another life from this world and we are devastated. Please respect his family and friends as we all continue to process this monumental loss.”

Born Kirsnik Khari Ball, Takeoff was the youngest member of the Migos, with Quavo being his uncle and Offset being his cousin. Recently, Offset has become estranged from the other group members, with rumors of a breakup running rampant. Quavo and Takeoff released their debut album as a duo, Only Built for Infinity Links, last month. Offset is slated to release his sophomore solo album on Nov. 11, though it is unclear if that will still happen.

Oil prices stable as economic fears offset supply woes

LONDON, Oct 18 (Reuters) – Oil prices were stable on Tuesday as the market balanced cuts to OPEC+ production quotas against fears of economic slowdown and lower Chinese fuel demand.

Brent crude futures eased by 7 cents, or 0.08%, to $91.55 a barrel by 1127 GMT while U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were down 12 cents, or 0.14%, at $85.34.

WTI had risen earlier by more than $1 a barrel on a weaker dollar, which makes oil cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.

But the U.S. dollar index measuring the greenback against six peers rose later in the session, weighing on oil prices in European trading.

Also in focus was the Bank of England’s plan to start selling the vast government bond holdings it amassed during the coronavirus crisis. That sent long-dated yields higher , indicating increased risks to financial stability.

Meanwhile, China’s fuel demand outlook weighed on sentiment after the world’s top crude oil importer delayed release of economic indicators originally scheduled to be published on Tuesday. No date was given for a rescheduled release. read more

On the supply side, U.S. crude oil stocks were expected to have risen for a second consecutive week, a preliminary Reuters poll showed on Monday.

Output in the Permian Basin of Texas and New Mexico, the biggest U.S. shale oil basin, is forecast to rise by about 50,000 barrels per day (bpd) to a record 5.453 million bpd this month, the Energy Information Administration said.

Some price support came from investors increasing long positions in futures after a 2 million barrel per day (bpd) cut to output targets agreed by OPEC+, ANZ Research analysts said in a note.

Several members of the oil producer group have endorsed the cut after the White House accused Saudi Arabia of coercing some nations into supporting the move, a charge Riyadh denies.

“Even though the production cut is not likely in reality to be even half as high, the U.S. government sees it as an affront … The question now is how the U.S. will react, as this could have a far-reaching impact on the oil market,” Commerzbank said in a note.

The Biden administration plans to sell oilfrom the Strategic Petroleum Reserve in an effort to cool fuel prices before next month’s congressional elections, sources told Reuters on Monday.

US Postal Service proposes new prices ‘to offset’ inflation

CNN
 —

The US Postal Service on Friday proposed increased prices “to offset the rise in inflation,” according to a statement from the agency.

The price hikes, which have been approved by the Governors of the U.S. Postal Service, include a three-cent increase to purchase a stamp and a four-cent increase to mail a postcard. The changes amount to a 4.2% price increase for first class mail, according to USPS.

The proposal must now be reviewed by the Postal Regulatory Commission.

The announcement from the US Postal Service comes as consumers around the nation continue to grapple with rising prices for groceries, gas and other necessities. The US Postal Service has publicly struggled financially in recent years, and President Joe Biden signed a law earlier this year to overhaul the USPS’ finances and allow the agency to modernize its service.

“As operating expenses continue to rise, these price adjustments provide the Postal Service with much needed revenue to achieve the financial stability sought by its Delivering for America 10-year plan,” US Postal Service said on Friday. “The prices of the U.S. Postal Service remain among the most affordable in the world.”

Unlike other government agencies, the USPS generally does not receive taxpayer funding, and instead must rely on revenue from stamps and package deliveries to support itself.

The Postal Service is also looking to increase fees for P.O. Box rentals, money orders and the cost to purchase insurance when mailing an item.

If approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission the changes would take effect January 22, 2023, after midnight.

Drake, Kim K, Offset & More Attend Beyoncé’s Star-Studded 41st Birthday Party

Tristan Thompson and Khloé Kardashian also stepped out for the big event.

Beyoncé celebrated her 41st birthday earlier this month, on September 4th, but because the big day fell on Labour Day long weekend, the mother of three opted to push her party to the next weekend, celebrating with a star-studded roster of celebrity friends at a Bel Air mansion on Saturday (September 10) to “f*ck up the night” with Queen B herself.

As TMZ notes, the paparazzi didn’t snag any photos of the birthday girl on her own big day, though they did snap a picture of her husband JAY-Z, who wore a slick red suit and a pair of sunglasses.

Other famous faces in attendance included Drake, Lizzo, Jaden Smith, Machine Gun Kelly and his fiancée Megan Fox, as well as The Idol starlet Lily-Rose Depp, Migos member Offset (who channelled Michael Jackson with his outfit of the night), and Vanessa Bryant.

Several members of the Kardashian-Jenner clan were also at the party. Kim was photographed more than once sporting a red and black striped catsuit with her long platinum blonde hair cascading down her shoulders and oversized sunglasses shielding her eyes.

Family matriarch Kris joined her daughter for the evening, as did little sister Khloé Kardashian and her ex Tristan Thompson, though it remains unclear if the two showed up together.

Bella Hadid took a break from her New York Fashion Week duties to attend, and happy couple Adele and Rich Paul were also spotted at the function.

Guests are said to have started arriving around 10:30 and stayed until about 3 in the morning. Check out more photos from Beyoncé’s 41st birthday party below.
