Titans trade 2020 first-round offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson to Dolphins, per report

The Miami Dolphins have acquired offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson from the Tennessee Titans, according to NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport. Miami is sending a 2021 seventh-round pick in return for Wilson, who was the No. 29 overall selection in the 2020 NFL Draft, and a 2022 seventh-round pick, according to Albert Breer. 

The former Georgia Bulldog appeared in one game for the Titans. He was placed on the COVID-19 reserve list twice, suspended for the team’s Week 13 game following a violation of team rules. As of Feb. 16, Titans general manager Jon Robinson had not spoken with Wilson since he was placed on the reserve/non-football illness list in December. The 22-year-old had also been arrested for a DUI in September. A late-night post on Feb. 22 suggested that the lineman intended to give up football. Days later, it was reported that Tennessee had begun to shop him in a trade. 

Robinson issued a challenge to the New York native. 

“He’s gonna have to make a determination if he wants to do everything necessary to play pro football. That’s going to be on him,” Robinson said, via Pro Football Talk. 

Wilson should compete for the starting right tackle position in Miami if he is able to erase a troubled rookie season. Rookie Robert Hunt would presumably slide inside to the starting offensive guard position manned by Ereck Flowers.

Wilson is the second prospect to be traded from the 2020 NFL Draft. Miami also acquired wide receiver Lynn Bowden Jr. — a third-round pick — from the Raiders. He has three years plus a possible fifth-year option worth a little more than $5 million left on his rookie deal. 

The Dolphins have the ninth-most salary cap space in the NFL at roughly $35.6 million. The franchise holds two first-round picks, including the No. 3 overall selection, acquired from the Texans as part of the trade for offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil.

Disney+ gives ‘The Muppet Show’ an ‘offensive content’ disclaimer before select episodes

Before playing the music and lighting the lights, fans who choose to binge “The Muppet Show” on Disney+ will be shown an “offensive content” warning ahead of select episodes. The classic series, which first aired in 1976, was released on the streaming service on Friday.

“This program includes negative depictions and/or mistreatment of people or cultures. These stereotypes were wrong then and are wrong now. Rather than remove this content, we want to acknowledge its harmful impact, learn from it and spark conversation to create a more inclusive future together,” the disclaimer states. “Disney is committed to creating stories with inspirational and aspirational themes that reflect the rich diversity of the human experience around the globe.”

Variety reported the disclaimer has been added to a total of 18 episodes throughout the show’s five seasons, including those guest hosted by Jim Nabors, Joel Grey, Steve Martin, Peter Sellers, Cleo Laine, James Coco, Spike Milligan, Crystal Gayle, Kenny Rogers, Beverly Sills, Jonathan Winters, Alan Arkin, James Coburn, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Debbie Harry, Wally Boag and Marty Feldman. The disclaimer appears at the beginning of these episodes for 12 seconds.

The label has been added to each video for a different reason. For example, during Cash’s epsiode, the legendary music star sings in front of a Confederate flag.

According to a statement from Disney’s Stories Matter initiative, the company is “in the process of reviewing our library and adding advisories to content that includes negative depictions or mistreatment of people or cultures” as part of an ongoing commitment to diversity and inclusion.

“Rather than removing this content, we see an opportunity to spark conversation and open dialogue on history that affects us all. We also want to acknowledge that some communities have been erased or forgotten altogether, and we’re committed to giving voice to their stories as well,” the statement continues. “To that end, we’ve brought together a group of experts from outside our company to advise us as we assess our content and ensure it accurately represents our global audiences. As we embrace each other’s stories, we embrace possibility. And that’s why we’re committed to doing the best we can to represent communities authentically. So people not only see the best in themselves, but the world can see it too.”

Other examples where Disney+ viewers can see the content warnings are on classic films such as The Aristocrats, Dumbo, Peter Pan, and Swiss Family Robinson.

Disney+ has blown past the company’s subscriber expectations, totaling 94.9 million subscribers as of its latest quarter ending Jan. 2. The streaming service first launched in November 2019.

‘The Muppets’ Contains Offensive Material, Declares A Disney+ Disclaimer – Deadline

The Muppets was once celebrated for its depictions Native American, Middle Eastern, and Asian people.

But there are some moments that haven’t survived the change in attitudes since they first aired. For example, country singer Johnny Cash is seen performing in front of a Confederate flag in one episode. That former staple of southern country is now verboten, as seen by the recent apology from singer Luke Combs for his past use of it.

Seahawks Name Shane Waldron Offensive Coordinator, Andy Dickerson Run Game Coordinator

The Seahawks turned to a familiar opponent to find their next offensive coordinator, hiring Shane Waldron, who has spent the past four seasons with the Los Angeles Rams, holding the title of passing game coordinator for the past three years.

Joining Waldron in the move from L.A. to Seattle is Andy Dickerson, who will be the Seahawks’ run-game coordinator following nine seasons as the Rams’ assistant offensive line coach.

Waldron, 41, has seven years of NFL coaching experience, also working with Rams coach Sean McVay in Washington for a year before McVay took the Rams job, and working under Bill Belichick in New England from 2008-09 as an offensive quality control coach and later as a tight ends coach.

“We are really excited to bring Shane Waldron to the Seahawks,” Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said. “His creative and competitive approach to the game will bring out the best in our players and coaches. Shane also brings great knowledge and insight about our division. His vision for the future, along with the caliber of players on our offense, made him a must get for us.”

Waldron replaces Brian Schottenheimer, whom the Seahawks parted ways with two weeks ago, while Dickerson fills the vacant run game coordinator position that came open with Brennan Carroll taking the offensive coordinator job at the University of Arizona. Waldron and Dickerson were college teammates at Tufts University before getting into coaching. Dickerson, who had been the longest-tenured member of the Rams’ coaching staff, has among other duties helped the Rams offensive line be one of the best pass-protection units in the league. Since McVay took over in 2017, the Rams have been in the top 10 in the NFL for fewest sacks allowed for four-straight years, including in 2019 when they gave up a league-low 22 sacks, and last season when they allowed 25, tied for sixth fewest. The Rams also had a top 10 rushing attack three of the past four years, including last season when they ranked 10th, averaging 126.1 rushing yards per game despite not having a running back rush for more than 625 yards for the season.

“We are fortunate to be able to add Andy Dickerson as our run game coordinator,” Carroll said. “He has worked with Shane for many years and that continuity will be an integral factor in the transition process.

“They, together with our staff, will work to capture the many strengths we have developed over the years and expand the explosive ability that Russell (Wilson) and crew have afforded us.” 

Waldron, who has also coached at Notre Dame, the University of Massachusetts and the UFL’s Hartford Colonials, has never been a coordinator at the college or pro level, but he has the endorsement of his former boss.

Asked about Waldron in 2018, McVay said, “He’s a phenomenal coach. He’s a great communicator. He’s got a rare ability to authentically and genuinely connect with not only coaches, but the players and be able to correct in a manner that doesn’t make guys’ guards come up. It’s all about problem solving and doing it together. He’s obviously done a phenomenal job, really mainly as a leader for our offense, not exclusively to just being a pass-game coordinator.”

McVay added that Waldron was “absolutely” ready to be an offensive coordinator. “I would be extremely disappointed, selfishly, if we lost him, but so happy if that’s something that he felt like was next for him and his family. There’s no doubt about it, he’s a great coach and he’s certainly ready if that’s the next step that he decides he wants to take.”

While Waldron and Dickerson are sure to bring their own ideas to Seattle’s offense, there are elements of McVay’s Rams offenses that should appeal to Carroll, who in his end-of-season press conference expressed the desire to “run the ball more effectively” and also more often in 2021. Since McVay took over in L.A. four year ago, the Rams have relied on a relatively balanced offense that features a heavy dose of play-action passes, pre-snap motion, bootlegs and intermediate passes that lead to run-after-catch opportunities for receivers and tight ends.

Report: Seahawks hire from within NFC West, land Rams’ Shane Waldron as offensive coordinator

ESPN’s Adam Schefter dropped a Friday news dump on a Tuesday evening, and it has to do with the Seattle Seahawks’ offensive coordinator position. After a couple of weeks of speculation, excitement, dread, indifference, and that worrying moment when Adam Gase’s name appeared, the Seahawks are reportedly hiring Los Angeles Rams passing game coordinator Shane Waldron to replace Brian Schottenheimer.

Waldron has been with Sean McVay since their days in Washington back in 2016. When McVay was hired by the Rams, Waldron was initially Los Angeles’ tight ends coach before assuming the role of the passing game coordinator in 2018. He also had the title of quarterbacks coach in 2019 before focusing just on the passing game again in 2020. Previously he was an intern with the New England Patriots and worked under Bill Belichick as an offensive quality control coach and then later the tight ends coach in 2009.

The 41-year-old native of Portland, Oregon has never called plays in the NFL, but I assume as offensive coordinator he was calling plays at the prestigious K-12 Buckingham Browne & Nichols School in Massachusetts back in 2011.

We know that while the Los Angeles Rams have been a pass-heavy team on early downs in neutral game script situations under Sean McVay, they are big on play-action and they have led the league in play-action attempts over the past two seasons. Rather curiously, the Seahawks only had 9 more play-action passes in 2020 than in 2019 despite increasing Russell Wilson’s pass attempts by 42.

The play-action rate is one thing, but the creativity of the play-action concepts and moving Jared Goff out of the pocket is a different story and the Rams have consistently made that a staple of their offense throughout the McVay era.

And so in steps Mr. Waldron as the Seahawks’ fourth OC in the Pete Carroll era. Congratulations to him and hopefully this is a great hire.

Dolphins’ offensive coordinator search takes surprising turn

The Miami Dolphins’ offensive coordinator search has been, well, extensive. Miami got word near the end of the week immediately following their season-ending loss to the Buffalo Bills that veteran offensive coordinator Chan Gailey would be stepping down from his post, leaving the Dolphins in position to hire their third consecutive play caller in as many seasons in the Brian Flores era.

And, about a week ago, the Dolphins’ list of rumored candidates was reported. Included were:

Dolphins RB coach Eric Studesville
Dolphins QB coach George Godsey
Clemson OC Tony Elliott
Chargers QB coach Pep Hamilton
49ers run game coordinator Mike McDaniel
Steelers QB coach Matt Canada

But as last weekend unfolded, it seemed as though Miami’s shortlist of candidates was whittling away. First it was reported that Elliott desired to stay at Clemson. Then it was reported that Kyle Shanahan, amid departures from his staff in San Francisco, would promote McDaniel to serve as the 49ers’ offensive coordinator and that Matt Canada was in line to be promoted from the Steelers’ quarterbacks coach role to take the offensive coordinator role in Pittsburgh.

Presumably, there were three remaining candidates: Godsey and Studesville from within the Dolphins’ building and Hamilton. And we haven’t gotten any traction towards a resolution since. But the news from yesterday threw the whole situation for a loop. The Pittsburgh Steelers interviewed Hue Jackson for the position Canada was rumored and penciled in to take as the team’s offensive coordinator. So now Canada may be back on the table for the Dolphins after all.

Also reported to be in the running for Pittsburgh’s suddenly available vacancy? Pep Hamilton, who is reportedly interviewing in Pittsburgh today.

If Pittsburgh settles on Hamilton, the Dolphins will have no one to blame but themselves — they’ve been the only team reported to show significant interest for over a week but never made the hire, so one would assume Miami’s preference lies elsewhere, either with an internal candidate or perhaps with Canada after all.

We’d say that this vacancy will come to a resolution soon — but we thought that last week as well with the 2021 Senior Bowl looming for this coaching staff; so who knows when the hire is made. Before next season would be a safe bet.
