Washington state manhunt on for suspects who shot off-duty officer during attempted burglary

Authorities in Washington state are conducting a manhunt for two suspects accused of shooting an off-duty officer– who was out for a jog– when attempted to intervene in a burglary Sunday morning.

Donavan Heavener, a 27-year veteran of the nearby Federal Way Police Department, was on a morning run at around 7 a.m. when he came across two men trying to break into a lawn equipment store in Puyallup, according to Puyallup Police Chief Scott Engle. The town is about 10 miles outside Tacoma.

Officer Donavan Heavener was shot in the abdomen while trying to stop a burglary in progress on Sunday morning.

One of the two trucks that detectives believe was used by the suspects, a silver 2005 Chevrolet Silverado, was stolen from a nearby neighborhood at some point during the weekend.

Police have not identified the suspects, who they describe as two Hispanic males wearing all black.

Heavener was a school resource officer for several years and now works in the Federal Way Police Department’s administrative division.

Off-duty New Orleans police officer fatally shot at Houston restaurant

Authorities in New Orleans identified an off-duty police officer Sunday who was fatally shot over the weekend while eating dinner at a Houston restaurant.

The officer, Detective Everett Briscoe, was a 13-year veteran of the New Orleans Police Department, New Orleans Police Superintendent Shaun Ferguson said in a news conference.

Ferguson described Briscoe as a celebrated community police officer who last week earned his bachelor’s degree from Southern University. He is survived by his wife and two sons.

“We lost a good one,” Ferguson said.

A second person who was wounded in the shooting has not been identified. The person was in critical condition, Houston Police Chief Troy Finner said at an earlier news conference.

Two suspects who authorities said are linked to the shooting remained at large Sunday.

The shooting occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday at a restaurant just west of downtown Houston after the suspects entered the patio with guns and demanded items from patrons, Finner said. Briscoe was with a group visiting Houston, Finner said.

“Everybody complied,” he said, adding that one of the suspects opened fire but that nothing appeared to have been taken. “It makes no sense.”

Suspects on the run after off-duty New Orleans police officer killed in double shooting at Galleria restaurant, HPD says

HOUSTON – An off-duty New Orleans police officer was killed Saturday in a double shooting at a restaurant in the Galleria area, according to the Houston Police Department.

Officials said another victim was also shot and transported to the hospital.

Police said the two suspects are still on the run.

Houston police said officers responded to the shooting at around 5:15 p.m. at Grotto Ristorante at 4715 Westheimer Road. According to HPD, a group of people was sitting outside having dinner when two suspects approached the side of the patio. Police said the suspects had guns and demanded the victims’ belongings.

The witnesses told police that the victims complied. Then, one of the suspects fired shots; and the two victims were hit.

HPD said the suspects fled the scene in a gray or silver, four-door Nissan Altima with paper plates.

“It makes no sense,” said HPD Chief Troy Finner during a press conference Saturday. “We’re gonna stand together as a city. (When) you look at the stats over the last couple of weeks, crime has been going down a little bit and we want to continue to do that. But right now, I’m not worried about the status and worrying about getting these two individuals because I don’t want them to be a reflection of our city.”
