Kevin O’Connell envisions a 3-man defensive front for the Vikings

Getty Images

The Vikings have used a base 4-3 defense for a long, long time. That’s going to be changing.

Asked during his introductory press conference whether the Vikings will use a three-man defensive front, new head coach Kevin O’Connell said that, indeed, the team will.

“I think from a base standpoint you can look at it that way,” O’Connell said. “But I think somebody threw out the stat to me the other day, with everybody really living in 11 personnel [one running back, one tight end] nowadays, I think depending on the defense you talk to, 81 percent of the time they’re in nickel defense, which essentially is just a 4-3 with a nickel in the game instead of — a fifth DB, I should say, in the game instead of a third linebacker. A lot of times a big thing . . . is being multiple with your fronts because I know as an offensive coach if we know where you’re going to be, we know where you’re going to line up, that makes it pretty easy at least to design things to attack angles, understand how you want to run the ball, how you want to protect, but when you’re changing that picture and forcing opponents to deal with multiple fronts during a game, during a drive in some cases, that can be a real weapon for a defense, pairing that with some really good things on the back end, that’s kind of what we’re hunting.”

So it’ll be a 3-man base, but with multiple fronts aimed at keeping the offense guessing.

That makes sense on the surface, but the challenge comes from having the right personnel in place. If the defense will be fundamentally changing, some players currently on the team may not fit. And the Vikings would then need to find other players who are better skilled to running the defense.

The best coaching happens when the systems take advantage of the things the available players can do. Forcing a square peg into a round hole becomes a recipe for a bad defense. If the Vikings aren’t careful about the transition they plan to make, that’s precisely what they will have.

Vikings Name Kevin O’Connell Head Coach

Eagan, Minn. (February 15, 2022) The Minnesota Vikings have named Kevin O’Connell as the 10th head coach in franchise history. Coming off a Super Bowl LVI victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, O’Connell joins the Vikings after serving as the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Rams the past two seasons.

“We are ecstatic to add Kevin as our head coach,” said Vikings Owner/President Mark Wilf. “He is a strong leader, an innovative coach and an excellent communicator. Kevin played the game at all levels, which gives him a unique connection to players, and he is highly respected throughout the league. Vikings fans should be excited for the future of this team under Kevin’s direction.”

“Kevin is an impressive and respected leader who has been a part of some explosive offensive schemes,” said Vikings Owner/Chairman Zygi Wilf. “He has a tremendous football IQ and is passionate about preparing, developing and communicating with his players. Beyond the Xs and Os, everyone we spoke with throughout this search process spoke highly of Kevin’s ability to motivate players, coaches and staff.”

“As I spent time with Kevin during the interview process, it became immediately clear he will be a great partner in building this football team for long-term success,” said Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah. “He understands what is critical to leading a team that wins at the highest level, and he has an ability to simplify the complex, which will help us in problem-solving in all football areas. He is a genuinely positive person who will help create a high-energy internal environment.”

Minnesota Vikings to introduce new head coach Kevin O’Connell on Thursday

The Vikings are planning to introduce Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell as their next head coach Thursday, league sources told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The Vikings had not been permitted to announce that they were hiring O’Connell while the Rams were still playing in the postseason but can do so anytime now that Los Angeles’ season has been completed, culminating with its Super Bowl LVI victory.

The Rams are holding team meetings and exit interviews Tuesday and will hold their victory parade in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

O’Connell, 36, was one of four candidates to receive a second interview with the Vikings, along with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, then-Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham and Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

O’Connell is expected to take Rams tight ends coach and passing game coordinator Wes Phillips with him to Minnesota as his offensive coordinator or passing game coordinator, league sources have told Schefter.

O’Connell becomes the second coordinator in two years on Sean McVay’s staff to land a head-coaching job, joining former Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, who was hired by the Chargers last year.

The Vikings also have their defensive coordinator for O’Connell’s staff, finalizing a deal with Ed Donatell last week, sources told ESPN.

O’Connell replaces Mike Zimmer, who was fired last month after eight seasons. The Vikings finished with an 8-9 record and missed the playoffs for a second consecutive season.

O’Connell finished his second season as the Rams’ offensive coordinator since joining the franchise in 2020. Before that, he was with Washington for three seasons, as offensive coordinator in 2019, passing game coordinator in 2018 and quarterbacks coach in 2017.

He was a quarterback in the NFL, taken by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 draft and also spending time with the Lions, Jets, Dolphins and Chargers in five seasons through 2012.

Vikings choose Rams’ Kevin O’Connell as coach

The Vikings plan to hire Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to be the 10th head coach in the franchise’s 61-year history, according to two sources with knowledge of the situation.

A deal with O’Connell cannot be completed until after Los Angeles plays the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl on Feb. 13. But the Vikings on Wednesday night had begun informing the other finalists in their coaching search they would not get the job, sources said.

The Vikings spent most of Wednesday interviewing Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh but never made him a job offer, a source with knowledge of the discussions said. According to multiple news media reports, Harbaugh has informed Michigan he is returning to the school.

The Vikings chose O’Connell, 36, after conducting a second interview in Los Angeles with him on Monday. The Vikings also had second interviews with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and Giants defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

O’Connell, a former quarterback, was Washington quarterbacks coach in 2017, Kirk Cousins’ final season as the starter there, and would figure to run a similar system in Minnesota to the one the Vikings first installed with Kevin Stefanski and Gary Kubiak in 2019.

O’Connell also worked with new Vikings General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah in San Francisco in 2016, when the coach was on the 49ers staff doing special projects under Chip Kelly. Sources said Adofo-Mensah held O’Connell in high regard before he got the Vikings job, putting him on a list of coaches the GM wanted to work with, and O’Connell emerged as one of the favorites for the Vikings job as the team started its second round of interviews this week.

The Vikings will bank on the relationship between their 40-year-old general manager and their 36-year-old coach, as they try to refresh an organization that was rife with tension at the end of Mike Zimmer’s and Rick Spielman’s time together. Zimmer and Spielman were not on speaking terms toward the end of the 2021 season, and linebacker Eric Kendricks hinted at a desire for change after the Vikings fired both the coach and the GM on Jan. 10.

“I think just having that voice, no matter how big your role is, is important, to listen up and take each other’s feelings into account,” Kendricks said. “I don’t think a fear-based organization is the way to go.”

O’Connell was Washington’s offensive coordinator in 2019 and was hired for the same position with Rams in 2020. The Vikings’ search committee came away thrilled about how O’Connell would lead the team, a source said.

He will become the fourth former assistant of Rams head coach Sean McVay to get an NFL head coaching job. Bengals coach Zac Taylor, who will face the Rams in the Super Bowl, was McVay’s quarterbacks coach before Cincinnati hired him. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur had previously been McVay’s offensive coordinator, and Brandon Staley became the Chargers’ head coach last year after working as the Rams’ defensive coordinator.

Morris and Graham figure to stay with their current teams as defensive coordinators. Graham and Morris, who are Black, were the two coaches of color to hold in-person interviews with the Vikings. The team had planned a second interview with 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans this week, but he withdrew his name from the process.

Graham came to the Twin Cities for a nine-hour in-person interview on Tuesday, the same day former Dolphins head coach Brian Flores filed a lawsuit alleging systemic racism in the league’s hiring practices for coaches.

All four head coaches to get jobs in the 2022 hiring cycle are white; O’Connell would become the fifth. At the moment, there are only three minority head coaches in the NFL (the Steelers’ Mike Tomlin, the Jets’ Robert Saleh and the Commanders’ Ron Rivera). Adofo-Mensah, who became the first Black man in Vikings history to hold the GM title, is one of six GMs of color in the NFL.

Report: Kevin O’Connell to be next Vikings head coach

With Jim Harbaugh having decided that he’s returning to the University of Michigan, the Minnesota Vikings have made a decision on their next head coach.

Numerous sources are reporting that the Vikings have decided on Los Angeles Rams offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell to be the tenth head coach in franchise history.

O’Connell had his first interview with the team during the week of the Divisional Playoffs, and had his second interview with the team on Monday in Los Angeles.

Because of the rules that the National Football League has when it comes to coaching hires, the team can’t officially name O’Connell as their head coach until after the Super Bowl concludes. However, there are reports saying that they have gone so far as to tell the other two candidates. . .Los Angeles Rams’ defensive coordinator Raheem Morris and New York Giants’ defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. . .that they were no longer in the running for the job, meaning the job is going to be O’Connell’s.

What do you think of the prospect of Kevin O’Connell as the new head coach of the Minnesota Vikings, ladies and gentlemen?

Former ‘The Talk’ co-host Sharon Osbourne looks downcast after Jerry O’Connell replacement news

Sharon Osbourne looked worse for wear after it was confirmed that Jerry O’Connell would be replacing her on “The Talk.”

The former talk show co-host was seen driving with a makeup-free face and messy curly hair around Los Angeles Wednesday afternoon — which also happened to be when audio leaked of Elaine Welteroth purportedly telling the British personality that she knew she was “not racist.”

The double whammy must’ve taken a toll on Osbourne, as she appeared glum in her car.

Osbourne has not publicly commented on O’Connell’s hiring or the leaked tape that appeared to show Welteroth consoling Osbourne following the explosive March 10 episode in which she defended longtime pal Piers Morgan over his comments about Meghan Markle.

JERRY O’CONNELL JOINS ‘THE TALK’ FOLLOWING SHARON OSBOURNE’S EXIT

“I know you’re upset. It was terrible. I just hope you know when that once this blows over that you know that Sheryl [Underwood] is your friend. She really is your friend,” Welteroth could allegedly be heard saying in the audio. “She doesn’t think you’re racist. I don’t think you’re racist. No one who knows you would ever say that or think that.”

Later in the clip, the former “America’s Got Talent” judge suggested that CBS had “set me up,” saying, “They don’t care that I will now have to go around and [have] people think I’m racist. They don’t give a s–t. They just want ratings. That’s all.”

Osbourne, 68, ended up quitting the talk show and walking away with a $10 million payday. O’Connell, who will be the first male co-host in the series’ history, addressed his full-time hiring on Wednesday.

“You ladies have been so welcoming to me,” he told them Wednesday. “I mean, I came here as a guest months ago, and just from the moment I walked in, you’re just gracious, you’re kind, you’re fun, and it worked.”
