Boehner’s tears, Obama’s tribute at unveiling of portrait for Pelosi

Comment

A generation of congressional leaders fought back tears on Wednesday as they unveiled the official portrait of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), the first woman to hold the chamber’s gavel, and the first to have her likeness immortalized in the Speaker’s Lobby.

In her remarks, Pelosi thanked her colleagues for helping her craft such a storied congressional career, noting that she made history as the first female House speaker only because her caucus “had the courage to elect a woman.”

“I’m honored to be the first, but it will only be a good accomplishment if I’m not the last,” Pelosi said.

Figures including former House speaker John A. Boehner (R-Ohio) and Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) joined Pelosi in the Capitol’s Statuary Hall to celebrate her portrait and speakership. While Pelosi will remain in Congress, she will not serve as speaker, or in House Democratic leadership, in the next session.

An emotional Boehner recalled the many times he and Pelosi worked together in Congress, despite being on opposite sides of the aisle.

“Madam Speaker, you and I have disagreed publicly on many things over the years, but we were never disagreeable to each other,” Boehner said.

The former speaker noted that his daughters asked him to tell Pelosi “how much we admire her.”

“The younger generation today has a saying: ‘Game recognizes game,’” Boehner said. “And the fact of the matter is: No other speaker of the House in a modern era, Republican or Democrat, has wielded the gavel with such authority or with such consistent results.”

Pelosi, Boehner added, is “one tough cookie.”

In her remarks, Pelosi thanked Boehner, who was teary at times, and noted that she would have been “a little disappointed if he did not get emotional.”

Pelosi’s portrait was created by artist Ronald Sherr, who died last week. Sherr also painted Boehner’s official Capitol portrait, and Pelosi noted how the artist was able to capture “the intricate details of the House chamber.”

Her decision to step back from House leadership came after her husband, Paul Pelosi, was violently attacked in their San Francisco home by an intruder who was searching for her. Paul Pelosi was left with a skull fracture and serious injuries to his arm and hands.

Prosecutors play 911 call, show bodycam footage in Paul Pelosi attack

The crowd gave a standing ovation to Paul, who wore a hat as he appeared in Statuary Hall to celebrate his wife’s achievements Wednesday. The speaker thanked him in her remarks, calling him her “loving partner for life, my constant, constant pillar of support.”

Two of Pelosi’s closest Capitol confidantes, fellow California Democratic Reps. Zoe Lofgren and Lucille Roybal-Allard, defined the speaker as a role model who, in Lofgren’s words, proved to “countless” women and girls that they “can play not just a part, but a leading role in bringing the change they wish to see in the world.”

Pelosi was first elected to the House in 1987 and became the first female speaker in 2007, serving until 2011. She became speaker for the second time in 2019, succeeding Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.).

In her more than three decades of service, she has earned a reputation as a force of power in the face of male colleagues who at times undermined her work and opinions. She pushed over the finish line a remarkable number of legislative victories on her party’s top priorities, and she has received bipartisan recognition for her ability to keep Democrats united.

Pelosi stepping down as top House Democrat after 2 decades in leadership

Schumer, who was teary-eyed as he celebrated Pelosi, said the power to keep Democrats in line is one of the things he will “forever admire” about her.

History, Schumer added, will remember Pelosi as a lawmaker who “did it all.”

“We cannot talk about the Affordable Care Act without mentioning Nancy Pelosi. We cannot talk about the American Rescue Plan without mentioning Nancy Pelosi,” Schumer said. “We cannot talk about the [bipartisan deal on] infrastructure, or the Violence Against Women Act, the Lilly Ledbetter Act, repealing Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell — and so much more — without mentioning Nancy D’Alesandro Pelosi.”

Former president Barack Obama also spoke via video, reminding the crowd that his love for the speaker “is well documented.”

“Whenever I get stressed about what’s happening in Washington, I always feel better knowing that Nancy is on the case,” Obama said. “And that’s because for Nancy, nothing is impossible.”

Pelosi, he said, was the Democrat who did not give up on his signature ACA in 2009, not even after Sen. Edward M. Kennedy (D-Mass.) died, leaving Democrats with one fewer vote in the Senate.

“She would always say: ‘If the gate is closed, we’ll push it open,’” Obama recalled.

Pelosi, he said, “will go down as one of the most accomplished legislator leaders in American history.”

“And even after insurrectionists literally broke into her office,” Obama said, “she never stopped defending democracy here at home and around the world.”

Footage from the deadly Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection at the Capitol showed that, while rioters strode through the building’s hallways with bear spray and body armor in search of Pelosi — yelling “Where are you, Nancy?” and “Bring her out!” — she remained calm as she made efforts to reach the National Guard and procure the safety of her fellow lawmakers.

“In the face of insurrection, there was Nancy with us in the same room, unshaken, calm, determined to secure the building and keep democracy going,” Schumer said.

Few leaders in U.S. history, Schumer added, have been “as effective, as driven, as successful as Speaker Pelosi.”

“Somewhere out there, a future Madam Speaker awaits her chance to make a difference,” Schumer said. “And when that day comes, she will be standing on my friend Nancy Pelosi’s shoulders.”

Michelle Obama’s broad-brush remarks at portrait unveiling touch on Trump

In her first White House visit since the end of Barack Obama’s presidency, Michelle Obama spoke to the importance of honoring long-held traditions — including upholding a democracy — during the historic unveiling of the official Obama portraits, a custom that had been on hold during the Trump administration.

I never could have imagined that any of this will be part of my story,” the former first lady said during some of the most memorable remarks of Wednesday’s gathering. “But even if it’s all still a bit awkward for me, I do recognize why moments like these are important, why all of this is absolutely necessary.”

“Traditions like this matter not just for those of us who hold these positions, but for everyone participating in and watching our democracy,” she added.

Dignitaries joined alumni of the Obama administration to witness the unveiling of the former president’s image painted by Robert McCurdy and a portrait of Michelle Obama painted by Sharon Sprung.

What to know about today’s unveiling

Official White House portraits of presidents and their wives are usually unveiled by their successors in the earlier years of their presidencies. At times, the White House ceremony can be an opportunity for a president to honor a predecessor from their own party with whom they’ve had a long relationship. In other situations, the ceremony is a much celebrated moment of bipartisan unity between presidents of opposing parties who find camaraderie in having the shared experience of being the leader of the free world.

But this ritual didn’t take place during the presidency of Donald Trump. Trump, a frequent critic of his predecessor, did not schedule a ceremony to honor the Obamas during his four years in office. And since leaving the White House, he has continued his criticisms of Barack Obama. More significantly, he has spent much of his post-presidency falsely claiming that he won the 2020 election and that his democratically elected successor is wrongly occupying the Oval Office.

Michelle Obama used her moment from the podium to remind listeners of just how presidents are elected and how they ought to the leave the White House — a thinly veiled swipe at Trump and those who continue to support his false claims.

“The people, they make their voices heard with their vote,” she said. “We hold an inauguration to ensure a peaceful transition of power. Those of us lucky enough to serve work, as Barack said, as hard as we can for as long as we can, as long as the people choose to keep us here and once our time is up, we move on. And all that remains in this hallowed place are our good efforts.”

Obama, the only Black first lady in American history, spoke of the rarity of the occasion, given her relatively humble upbringing in a working-class family on the South Side of Chicago.

“For me, this day is not just about what has happened,” she said. “It’s also about what could happen because a girl like me, she was never supposed to be up there next to Jacqueline Kennedy and Dolley Madison. She was never supposed to live in this house. And she definitely wasn’t supposed to serve as first lady.”

“But what we’re looking at today — a portrait of a biracial kid with an unusual name and the daughter of a water pump operator and a stay-at-home mom — what we are seeing is a reminder that there’s a place for everyone in this country,” Obama added. “Because as Barack said, if the two of us can end up on the walls of the most famous address in the world, then again, it is so important for every young kid who is doubting themselves to believe that they can, too.”

Obama shared her hope and confidence in America’s ability to continue to be the home of possibility despite the ever-present cultural battles about the future direction of the country.

“As much as some folks might want us to believe that that story has lost some of its shine, that vision and discrimination and everything else might have dimmed its light, I still know deep in my heart that what we share, as my husband continues to say, is so much bigger than what we don’t,” she said.

“Our democracy is so much stronger than our differences. And this little girl from the South Side is blessed beyond measure to have felt the truth of that fuller story throughout her entire life.”

Joe Biden calls first lady Jill Biden Obama’s vice president

Another day, another blunder.

President Biden in a speech Saturday referred to his wife, first lady Jill Biden, as the vice president in the Obama administration, a post he served in for eight years.

The president, 79, was praising the first lady for her commitment to military families and how she oversaw the development of the USS Delaware, the US Navy’s newest nuclear attack submarine, as he spoke at its commissioning ceremony in Wilmington, Del., on Saturday.

“The daughter of a Navy signalman during World War Two, the mother of a member of the Delaware National Guard, the grandmother of children who experienced having their father deployed away from home for a year at a time,” Biden said in his speech. “She always holds our military and their families in her heart.  And that is not hyperbole; that’s real.”

“I’m deeply proud of the work she is doing as first lady with Joining Forces initiative she started with Michelle Obama when she was vice president,” President Biden said about wife Jill Biden.

Then came the gaffe.

“I’m deeply proud of the work she is doing as first lady with Joining Forces initiative she started with Michelle Obama when she was vice president and now carries on,” the president said in error, another in a string of mistakes the White House had to correct or walk back recently.

Later Saturday, the White House corrected the president’s blooper.

“And I’m deeply proud of the work she is doing as First Lady with Joining Forces initiative she started with Michelle Obama when she [I] was Vice President and now carries on,” the White House’s official transcript of the remarks said.

The mixup was among a series of snafus Biden has blundered into recently, including comments the president made in Poland that appeared to condone the idea of regime change to oust President Vladimir Putin because of the invasion into Ukraine.

“For God’s sake, this man cannot remain in power,” Biden said in Poland last month as he was finishing up a three-day trip to Europe to rally allies to remain unified against the Russian military operation.

Less than an hour after Biden’s remarks, the White House was cleaning up the comments.

“The president’s point was that Putin cannot be allowed to exercise power over his neighbors or the region,” an administration official said as Biden’s motorcade headed for the Warsaw airport en route back to Washington. “He was not discussing Putin’s power in Russia, or regime change.”

The next day, Secretary of State Antony Blinken was in full damage repair.

“I think the president, the White House, made the point last night that, quite simply, President Putin cannot be empowered to wage war or engage in aggression against Ukraine or anyone else,” Blinken said during a visit to Jerusalem last Sunday, insisting that the US does not have a strategy of regime change in Russia.

Biden then came out the next day to say he would make “no apologies” for his remarks about Putin, referring to a printed cheat sheet during an event at the White House.

“It’s more an aspiration than anything. He shouldn’t be in power. There’s no  — I mean, people like this shouldn’t be ruling countries, but they do. The fact is they do, but it doesn’t mean I can’t express my outrage about it,” the president said, noting that he was addressing his remarks to the Russian people when he made the comments in Poland.

The gaffes have led some Republican lawmakers to suggest that Biden isn’t up to the rigors of the presidency.

Rep. Ronny Jackson (R-Texas), who served as the White House physician during the Trump administration, called on the president to step down on Saturday.

“Biden isn’t running the country. He’s lost and confused. He’s TOTALLY out of the loop, and when he opens his mouth, he’s constantly ’corrected’ by his staff. He needs to RESIGN,” Jackson posted on Twitter.

“We deserve a cognitively capable President!,” he continued.

Jackson was among a host of GOP lawmakers who sent a letter to the White House in February asking the president to submit to a cognitive test.

“The American people should have absolute confidence in their President. They deserve to know that he or she can perform the duties of Head of State and Commander-in-Chief. They deserve full transparency on the mental capabilities of their highest elected leader,” the Republicans wrote.

“To achieve this, we urge you to submit to a cognitive test immediately. We implore you to then publish the test results, so the American people know the full mental and intellectual health of their President, and to follow the example set before you,” the letter said.

‘A four-week window’: Biden aims to learn from Obama’s mistakes with quick moves to deter Putin from invading Ukraine

Wary of repeating mistakes made in 2014, when the US and Europe were caught off guard by Russia’s annexation of Crimea, Biden directed his national security team to use every tool possible to try to deter Russian President Vladimir Putin while a possible invasion was still assessed to be several months away, a senior US official told CNN.

“What we have been doing is very calculated,” the official said. “But we only have about a four-week window from now” to pull it off, he added.

But as Russian troops continued to amass near Ukraine’s border, the quiet diplomacy quickly evolved into stark, public warnings to Putin to back down or face harsh sanctions and increased US military assistance to Ukraine. Top Biden officials are now emphasizing that the consequences would go above and beyond anything Russia faced after its land grab in 2014.

“The sanctions we imposed on Russia in 2014 were largely intended to inhibit the medium-to-long-term development of specific Russian state-owned firms by restricting their access to US capital markets and technology,” a White House official said.

In contrast, the options on the table now “would be overwhelming, immediate and inflict significant costs on the Russian economy and their financial system.”

The intelligence community came under fire in 2014 when Biden was vice president, over what some lawmakers said was a failure to predict Russia’s incursion into Crimea until it was too late. And after that attack, Biden’s push to arm Ukraine and impose extremely severe sanctions on Russia was largely overruled by President Barack Obama.

Now in charge, Biden has wanted to do things very differently, officials said.

“This administration has been much more proactive, and there is more of a realistic sense now that Putin is capable of absorbing a lot of pain in an effort to impose costs on the US and our allies,” said New Jersey Democratic Rep. Tom Malinowski, who served as the State Department’s senior most human rights official from April 2014 to January 2017.

That has resulted in far more robust intelligence-sharing with Ukraine about Russia’s planning than anything that occurred in 2014, sources familiar with the process said — partly because the Ukrainian government is “a more reliable partner” now than it was then, said one former senior NATO official, and partly because Biden firmly believes Ukraine cannot be left out of any discussions that concern its future.

The administration also shared unusually detailed intelligence early on about Russia’s movements with NATO, G7 and European allies early on, European diplomats told CNN.

“I did not see this same level of coordination in early 2014,” said the former senior NATO official, who retired in September 2021. “This administration has been much more multilateral in their approach — that is new, and it’s the result of leveraging a lot of positive work that has been done amid the Covid-19 pandemic to increase political cohesion and the exchange of information among partners.”

However, Malinowski and other officials noted the situation now is different from 2014 in important ways.

“What Putin is potentially preparing for here requires taking actions that are much more visible than what we saw in 2014,” Malinowski said. “The forces he is amassing are exactly the forces you would amass if you were preparing for an all-out land invasion of the country, which is not what happened in 2014 with Russia’s little green men.”

The Russian military is also “in a very different place in terms of capability, force structure, and posture compared to 2014-2015,” said Michael Kofman, the research program director in the Russia Studies Program at CNA. And the US has a much better understanding of that, said the former senior NATO official.

“We have increased intelligence capabilities, an increased eastern base posture, better satellite imagery, more political cohesion,” he said. “That has all allowed the US and its allies to be much better forewarned than in 2014.”

Still, current and former officials told CNN they see some similar mistakes being made — and similar signs from Russia that it is not taking the US threats seriously.

“I am definitely seeing things that are being done better in terms of them taking the threat seriously and working very closely with our allies, which I think is essential,” said Lt. Gen. Ben Hodges, who served as commanding general of United States Army Europe from November 2014 to December 2017.

“But there are still a lot of mixed messages coming out of the White House and a couple of unforced errors that the Kremlin must be quite happy with,” Hodges said, including Biden’s disclosure earlier this month that sending US troops to Ukraine is not on the table.

“I agree this is not the time for US military action,” he said. “But why announce that? That was basically a concession while the Kremlin has only increased their demands.”

Biden’s comment also reinforced Russia’s belief that, especially after the withdrawal from Afghanistan, the US will not want to get bogged down in another war overseas.

The National Security Council is similarly wary of sending certain kinds of equipment and weapons to Ukraine that might be viewed by Russia as provocative, like air defense systems, at a moment when the US and its allies are trying to get Moscow to de-escalate. Obama refused to provide Ukraine with lethal aid at all, also wary of provoking Russia further — but that restraint did nothing to deter the continued attacks by Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine or get Russia to relinquish Crimea.

“The biggest thing that provokes the Russians,” said Hodges, “is when we look weak and disjointed.”

Larry David says he was ‘relieved’ to be uninvited from Barack Obama’s controversial 60th birthday party

Larry David says he was nothing short of relieved to be uninvited to Barack Obama’s lavish 60th birthday party last weekend.

The former president held a star-studded bash on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts to celebrate another trip around the sun. Although celebrities such as Don Cheadle, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, Beyonce and more were in attendance, the large and highly criticized bash was actually scaled back significantly due to concerns over large gatherings posed by the coronavirus.

One person who was apparently thrilled to have his invite taken away was the “Curb Your Enthusiasm” star. In a statement to The New York Times’ opinion columnist Maureen Dowd, the 74-year-old, who has a home on the island, explained that he feared he would be asked to perform comedy at the event. With just three days to prepare jokes for the 44th president of the United States, David found himself completely at a loss for material.

“I was pretty glum when I finally called back his assistant,” David explained.

Fortunately for him, that call ended with him getting the boot from the guest list as things scaled back.

“When he told me I was eighty-sixed from the party, I was so relieved I screamed, ‘Thank you! Thank you!’ He must have thought I was insane,” David explained. “Then I hung up the phone, poured myself a drink and finished my crossword puzzle.”

OBAMA’S SCALED BACK 60TH BIRTHDAY BASH: CELEB ARRIVALS BEGIN TO SHOW WHO’S IN, WHO’S OUT

The New York Times previously reported that other celebrities, such as late-night comedians Stephen Colbert, Conan O’Brien and David Letterman, were also axed from the guest list amid fears of the coronavirus delta variant. Dowd’s piece, however, was most critical of the fact that many Hollywood celebrities who had little to nothing to do with Obama’s time in office were still allowed to attend while former administration staffers were told to hang back.

Erykah Badu Apologizes to Obamas for Being ‘Terrible Guest’

Erykah Badu is making sure to remain in the Obamas’ good graces by apologizing for being a “terrible guest” at No. 44’s 60th birthday party.

The 50-year-old neo-soul artist was one of several all-star guests at the former president’s private Hawaiian-themed birthday bash at Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts, which reportedly prohibited photography and videography. However, the “Bag Lady” singer broke the rules when she posted (and later deleted) a video on her Instagram Story of the birthday boy dancing with H.E.R. before giving her a hug. On Thursday, she issued a public apology.

“Mr. And Mrs. Obama , Please forgive me 4 being the ‘terrible guest ‘ at such a sacred event for your family,” she wrote on Twitter. “I was so inconsiderate, Thank you for all your love. What an example of ‘how NOT ‘ to be …… erica.”

Erykah Badu apologises for being ‘terrible guest’ at Barack Obama’s birthday party following unauthorised photo

Erykah Badu has apologised to Barack Obama for being a “terrible guest” at his 60th birthday party.

The singer was responsible for a backlash against Barack and his wife, Michelle, after sharing unauthorised photos from the event.

Grammy Award-winning singer Badu, 50, shared a photo of the couple dancing around hundreds of guests without wearing masks.

After Badu – real name Erica Wright – posted the now-deleted images online, the Obamas received criticism online, with many using the hashtagged phrase “ObamaVariant”. Others called it a “superspreader event”.

Badu has now issued an apology to the couple.

“Mr And Mrs Obama, Please forgive me 4 being the ‘terrible guest’ at such a sacred event for your family,” she wrote, telling her followers she removed the footage as it was the “right thing” to do.

“I was so inconsiderate,’ she added. “Thank you for all your love. What an example of ‘how NOT’ to be.”

The singer attended the luau-themed party at Martha’s Vineyard on 7 August, with her boyfriend JaRon Adkison.

She was fortunate to be included on the invite list following news that the Obamas had to cut the party’s capacity from 475 to 200 due to Covid regulations.

His spokesperson Hanna Hankins said was due to “the new spread of the Delta variant over the past week”, adding that Obama is “appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon”.

According to The New York Times, Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David and TV hosts David Letterman and Conan O’Brien were uninvited from the party.

Erykah Badu apologizes to Obamas for being ‘terrible guest’ at birthday party

Badu tweeted a public apology to the former First Couple for posting a video from his soiree.

Soul music mainstay Erykah Badu has said she’s sorry for posting a video from the private 60th birthday party of former President Barack Obama in Martha’s Vineyard.

The singer took to Twitter to offer a public apology that she wrote directly to the former first couple, “Mr. And Mrs. Obama,” she penned. “Please forgive me 4 being the ‘terrible guest’ at such a sacred event for your family.”

“I was so inconsiderate,” she continued. “Thank you for all your love. What an example of ‘how NOT‘ to be.”

She signed it with the classical spelling of her name, “Erica.”

One social media user replied, “They made you take down the video and apologize publicly, lol.”

Badu quote tweeted the post, replying, “Naw sis. It’s just right thing.”

Another on Twitter wrote, “It’s okay. Mistakes happen and sometimes the energy can be so great it causes you to go against the grain. We bounce back.”

Badu had shared a video of herself at the A-list event, which also included a shot of Obama on the dance floor with singer H.E.R. enjoying himself. Badu ultimately deleted the clip, but it was reposted by gossip sites and other social media users.

The party, which was originally set to welcome 500 guests to the Obama’s palatial Martha’s Vineyard estate, was scaled back to 200 guests due to rising transmission of the COVID-19 Delta variant. However, the star-studded soiree did proceed with a Hawaiian-luau theme.

“Due to the new spread of the delta variant over the past week, the president and Mrs. Obama have decided to significantly scale back the event to include only family and close friends,” a spokesperson said. “President Obama is appreciative of others sending their birthday wishes from afar and looks forward to seeing people soon.”

Rapper Trap Beckham performed his hit single, “Birthday Bi*ch”; his manager TJ Chapman posted and then deleted several videos he shared of the event. He later shared a clip in which he spoke about it.

“Y’all never seen Obama like this in your life,” said Chapman. “Nobody ever seen Obama like this. He was lit, too lit, oh my God.”

Dozens of celebs attended the event, with most posting pictures of themselves before they departed for it, including Gabrielle Union and Dywane Wade, who were elegantly dressed.

Obama’s 60th birthday party has been blasted by conservatives as irresponsible as the Delta variant continues to result in rising hospitalization numbers. However, guests reportedly had to submit negative COVID-19 test results to a specific “coronavirus coordinator” to gain entry.

Meghan Markle ‘desperately wanted’ to attend Obama’s birthday bash

Meghan Markle ‘desperately wanted’ to attend Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party but was not included on the guest list, Prince Harry’s biographer has claimed.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex did not attend the lavish do thrown by the former US president at his seven-bedroom £8million holiday home in Martha’s Vineyard on Saturday. It included John Legend and Chrissy Teigen, Meghan’s friend CBS This Morning host Gayle King, George Clooney and Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

And according to royal expert and author Angela Levin, who wrote Harry: Biography of a Prince, it is thought that Barack and Michelle, 57, never included Harry, 36, and Meghan, 40, on the 475 strong guest-list.

Angela told The Sun:  ‘I am told that despite claiming she was unable to attend, Meghan desperately wanted to be the special guest at the Obama’s amazing party. But the fact is, Harry and Meghan were never even on the original list.’

Meghan Markle ‘desperately wanted’ to attend Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party but was not included on the guest list, Prince Harry’s biographer has claimed

Meanwhile she added that the Obamas wanted to take a ‘step back’ from the couple out of respect for the Queen.

‘I’m sure that if they say we can only deal with one brother and his wife — you cannot have both because they are so far apart now — they will go towards William.

‘The Obamas clearly always regarded Harry highly, but I am sure they can see through Meghan.

They may stay around, but they won’t be as pally as they once were.’

The Obamas also have a long-standing relationship with Harry, having bonded with him over his Invictus Games – for which they starred in a video with the prince and the Queen to help promote it in 2016

The Obamas first met Her Majesty back in 2009 at the G20 summit, and in 2011 the monarch hosted them on a three-day State visit.

When the Duke of Edinburgh passed away in April, aged 99, Obama posted a glowing tribute on Twitter, writing: ‘Through his extraordinary example, His Royal Highness Prince Philip proved that true partnership has room for both ambition and selflessness – all in service of something greater.’

His wife also tweeted: ‘Our thoughts are with Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal family, and the British people.’

Speaking about the Queen during her 2019 book tour, Michelle described her as ‘wonderfully warm, funny, elegant and kind and considerate in really interesting ways’.

The Obamas didn’t invite Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to Barack’s 60th birthday party because ‘they will go towards William’ amid the family’s rift, according to Angela. Pictured, Prince Harry, US President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama, Prince William, Kate Middleton pose as they attend a dinner at Kensington Palace on April 22, 2016 in London

Despite both Meghan and Harry currently being on parental leave after welcoming their daughter Lilibet in June, the Duchess used her 40th birthday as an opportunity to launch her new 40×40 initiative, designed to encourage women back into work post-pandemic

In 2016, they attended a dinner with Prince William and Kate Middleton at their home, where they were photographed meeting Prince George, then three, who was in his dressing gown ready for bed, before having dinner with the Cambridges and Harry.

Obama publicly threw his support behind Prince William’s Earthshot Prize in October, writing on Twitter: ‘It’s going to take a lot of big-thinking and innovation to save the one planet we’ve got – and that’s why @KensingtonRoyal’s leadership on climate change can make a real difference.’

The Obamas also have a long-standing relationship with Harry, having bonded with him over his Invictus Games – for which they starred in a video with the prince and the Queen to help promote it in 2016.

The following year Harry interviewed Barack in Toronto for his guest edit of BBC Radio 4’s Today programme, during which they discussed the risks of social media and the corrosion of civil discourse.

Meghan also made a point of attending Michelle’s talk at the London Southbank Centre in December 2018, with the two women reportedly getting together backstage afterwards for a ‘power meeting’ to discuss their shared passion for girls’ education.

When the Obamas returned to the UK in 2016, they made a point of visiting Kensington Palace where they met Prince George, then three, who was in his dressing gown ready for bed, before having dinner with the Cambridges and Harry

Despite both Meghan and Harry currently being on parental leave after welcoming their daughter Lilibet in June, the Duchess last week used her 40th birthday as an opportunity to launch her new 40×40 initiative, designed to encourage women back into work post-pandemic.

But while a host of celebrities – including Hillary Clinton – were asked to support the project, which asks people to donate 40 minutes of their time to mentoring, the Obamas were seemingly not invited to participate.

And Angela notes that ‘it must be irritating for the Obamas’ that the concept is similar to Barack’s 60×60 birthday appeal, where people were asked to donate 60 dollars, or even six dollars, to a charitable cause.

The comments come after royal expert Camilla Tominey claimed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s ‘conspicuous’ absence from Barack Obama’s 60th birthday party could be a sign their ‘special relationship’ is over.

Despite Obama insisting the event had been scaled back from a guestlist of 500 because of the spread of the Indian Delta variant of Covid, a staff member told DailyMail.com that 300 to 400 people were in attendance.

Page Six, which broke the news of Harry’s multi-million pound book deal, reported Harry and Meghan were ‘not planning to attend’ and suggested the Duke might whisk his wife away for her own birthday celebrations, as she turned 40 on August 4.

Camilla Tominey suggested that ordinarily, you would have expected Harry and Meghan to be ‘front and centre’ of the Obamas’ guest list, however some people within Democrat circles have suggested the Sussexes’ attempts to ‘ape everything the Obamas have done’ since they quit the Royal Family may have ‘jeopardised their once special relationship’.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, she said: ‘Despite the Obamas not attending the Sussexes’ wedding that year, it was thought that the newly California-based couple would be shoo-ins at Obama’s 60th, as prominent ‘progressives’ and new-found members of the US metropolitan liberal elite.’

She claimed a source revealed the Obamas ‘didn’t like Harry attacking his family’ during his and Meghan’s explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey in March.

‘They value family and certainly aren’t the type of people who would want their children talking to the press,’ the insider added.

Meghan made a point of attending Michelle’s talk at the London Southbank Centre in December 2018, with the two women reportedly getting together backstage afterwards for a ‘power meeting’ to discuss their shared passion for girls’ education

Former First Lady Michelle Obama also shed light on her and her husband’s feelings on the public outpouring – during which they accused the monarchy of not supporting them and suggested Prince Charles and Prince William are ‘trapped’ in the system – in an interview with Access Hollywood.

‘My hope is that, when I think about what they’re going through, I think about the importance of family and I just pray that there is forgiveness and there is clarity and love and resolve at some point in time. Because there’s nothing more important than family,’ she said.

The Sussexes have followed a similar trajectory to the Obamas since quitting royal life, having signed a multi-million dollar deal with Netflix to produce their own documentary series.

Harry has also signed a lucrative four-book deal with Penguin Random House – the same publishers used by Obama for his memoir A Promised Land in November last year. In 2018 Michelle published her life story, Becoming.

Tominey suggested the Obamas may be fearful that an association with the Sussexes risks attracting negative publicity.

She added that Harry and Meghan bad-mouthing the royals during their Oprah interview ‘arguably will not have gone down particularly well with a couple that have always put ‘family first.”

Following the Oprah interview and Harry’s book news, some royal commentators have criticised the Sussexes for dishing yet more royal dirt.

There is concern within the Firm that the release of one of the books is reportedly due to come after the death of the Queen – though Harry’s lawyers have said the claim that he is waiting for his grandmother to pass away before releasing one of them is ‘false and defamatory’.

Obama’s birthday party guests leave early because of traffic ‘sh– show’

Celebrity guests have begun leaving former President Barack Obama’s Martha’s Vineyard “scaled-down” birthday bash, creating a “s–t show” of traffic congestion on the resort island.

Singer John Legend, model wife Chrissy Teigen, and rapper Takeoff were seen leaving the ex-president’s 29-acre Oak Bluffs seaside property just before midnight by a Post photographer.

Legend was heard performing for the crowd Saturday evening, and the Migos MC was also rumored to have taken the raised stage set up on the sprawling estate.

In between musical acts, a DJ was heard playing “Ain’t Nobody” by Chaka Khan, in honor of the 60-year-old man of the hour.

A fleet of taxis were seen driving into the Obama residence to take party staff home, and a handful of SUVs possibly containing stars were also seen departing the shindig.

A local Massachusetts police officer could be heard describing the vehicle situation in the town of 4,500 as a “s–t show” on his radio as the party began to wind down, according to the photog.

The party’s original guest list of nearly 500 people, in addition to 200 staff members, had been reduced earlier this week to only “friends and close family” after an outbreak of COVID-19’s Delta variant in nearby Cape Cod.

The 11th-hour decision — which led to the reported disinvites of former adviser David Axelrod and comics David Letterman, Larry David and Conan O’Brien — followed a report by The Post, which cited a source as saying the former president was creating a public health nightmare by trying to get 700 people to the island.

Still, there was plenty of star power in attendance with Jay-Z, Beyoncé, Steven Spielberg, Bradley Cooper, Don Cheadle, Erykah Badu, Steven Colbert and John Kerry photographed arriving for the party.

Other guests included Bruce Springsteen, Tom and Rita Hanks, Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union, Eddie Vedder, and Questlove, who was slated to perform.

Earlier in the day, the stars turned heads in the sleepy enclave, as the Hanks were spotted browsing through a bookshop in nearby Edgartown, where Legend and Teigen were also seen shopping.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was spotted having lunch at the Winnetu Resort in Edgartown — where Spielberg was also seen taking selfies with fans — after she reportedly did not make the cut for the new streamlined guestlist.

The Democrat’s office did not immediately respond to the New York Post’s request to clarify why she was on Martha’s Vineyard.
