NYC Crime: 3 officers injured in machete attack blocks away from Times Square investigated as possible terrorism

MIDTOWN, Manhattan (WABC) — The NYPD and the FBI are investigating after three officers were attacked by a man with a machete just blocks away from Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

The attack on the officers is being investigated as a possible incident of terrorism because of online postings and the method of attack by the 19-year-old suspect, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

The attack happened near 57th and 8th around 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night, just hours before the ball drop.

All three officers were hospitalized, one with a fractured skull and another with a bad cut, but were expected to recover.

One of the officers was an eight-year veteran while the other was a rookie officer who just graduated from the police academy on Friday.

Moments after the attack, the suspect was shot in the shoulder by police.

Police did not immediately identify the 19-year-old suspect, who also was expected to recover.

The suspect came to New Years Eve in NYC from Maine, and federal and local law enforcement officials are now starting to look through online postings that preliminarily indicate recent extremist Islamic radicalization, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

While his motive remains under investigation, the authorities are not ruling out that the suspect came to NYC specifically to attack police officers, the sources said.

The man has no prior arrests, but was recently reported by concerned family members.

The FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force had previously looked into the suspect, law enforcement sources said, after he was reported by the relatives.

The attack and sound of a gunshot briefly sent some people in the crowd running, but the incident did not impact the festivities in Times Square, which continued uninterrupted.

Mayor Eric Adams said at a news conference that he had spoken to one of the wounded officers as he was being stitched up at the hospital.

“He was in good spirits,” Adams said. “He understood that his role saved lives of New Yorkers today.”

The blocks where the biggest crowds gather to see performances and the midnight ball drop can only be accessed through checkpoints where officers use metal-detecting wands to screen for weapons. Large bags and coolers are banned. Barriers are set up to prevent vehicle attacks in the secure area.

The security perimeter can only extend so far, though. The attack took place on 8th Avenue, which is often packed with thick crowds navigating around the frozen zone or trying to find one of the secure entrances.

Both federal and local law enforcement stressed at an early morning news conference Sunday the attack that injured three NYPD officers appeared to be an isolated incident and there was no larger threat.

Prior to New Year’s Eve, the NYPD noted in a pre-event assessment “Throughout December, multiple pro-ISIS users disseminated extremist propaganda graphics broadly calling for attacks in advance of the New Year, advocating a wide range of low-tech tactics.”

Knife attacks have long been promoted by Islamist terror groups.

2 boys stabbed to death in Bronx; mother in custody

MOUNT HOPE, The Bronx (WABC) — Two young boys, ages 3-years old-old and 11-months old, were stabbed to death in the Bronx Saturday night, and police say their mother is in custody.

Police say the homicides happened at a family shelter on Echo Place in the Mount Hope section of the Bronx, where the boys were found with multiple stab wounds to the neck and torso.

NYPD hold update on stabbing deaths:

Police first responded to an initial call at 7:30 p.m., when they found the mother inside the apartment on the third floor acting erratically. Sources say the mother then tried to burn the apartment down with the stove and then turned the water on.

Police say the mother, who is a person of interest in the deaths, was taken to the hospital for evaluation and remains in custody.

Less than an hour later, a second 911 call was received, this time reporting two unresponsive children at the same location. Officers returned to the apartment where they found the boys with stab wounds.

Neighbors who live down the hall say they heard the parents of the two young boys arguing and screaming earlier in the night. They also heard the boy’s father crying for help.

“He was screaming hysterically. He was screaming, ‘Help me!’ And I came and opened my door and I see him coming down the hall with the two boys in his arms. They were dead, they were dead. There was blood everywhere,” neighbor Shannon Holyfield said.

Officers and another family member attempted to resuscitate the boys, who were rushed to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where they were declared dead.

“It’s something that they are going to have to live with and think about probably for the rest of their lives. We have very experienced police officers. I think they are the best. They are able to handle and cope with any situation,” NYPD Deputy Chief Louis De Ceglie said at a news conference Saturday evening.

A memorial was started outside the shelter Sunday morning in memory of the two young victims.

Threat to New York City Jewish community foiled by FBI/NYPD task force, commissioner says

NEW YORK (WABC) — The NYPD and FBI have two people in custody after uncovering a threat to the Jewish community.

An attentive MTA officer tracked down a man at Penn Station that police had been looking for. They say Christopher Brown had been making threats on social media to shoot up a synagogue.

When Brown, who is from Aquebogue in Suffolk County, was caught at Penn Station, and had a large hunting knife on him.

Officers also arrested Matthew Mahrer, who was accompanying Brown. Investigators searched Mahrer’s apartment in New York City and found a Glock 17 firearm.

Brown had been on the radar for making threats against the Jewish community for some time, and the threats were getting more serious as of recent, further raising concerns.

The Jewish community has already been on edge – just over two weeks ago, an 18-year-old from Sayreville, New Jersey was arrested for making an online threat that sent police scrambling to add extra patrols at local synagogues and yeshivas.

Christopher brown is now facing charges for making terroristic threats and possession of a weapon. It is still unclear how the second man, Matthew Mahrer was involved – if at all. Mahrer has one charge of possession of a weapon.

MTA PD Chief John Mueller released a statement Saturday saying in part,

“The tremendous police work here reflects the MTA PD’s core purpose – protecting millions of daily commuters, in collaboration with our local, state and federal law enforcement partners.”

Federal prosecutors are deciding whether additional charges are warranted.

NYC Crime: Subway dispute over dropped phone turns deadly in Jackson Heights, Queens

JACKSON HEIGHTS, Queens (WABC) — A 50-year-old man is under arrest after a fight with another subway rider ended with that man fatally struck by a train in Elmhurst, Queens.

The suspect was standing near the platform of the Jackson Heights-Roosevelt Ave. station at around 4:45 p.m. Monday when 48-year-old Heriberto Quintana bumped into him while walking by.

The contact sent the suspect’s cellphone tumbling onto the subway tracks.

The suspect, Carlos Garcia, told the victim to go get his phone. He refused, and the two began arguing which then became a brawl.

In a defensive move, Garcia pushed the victim off his body, causing him to slide headfirst across the platform into the front of a moving F train.

Quintana, of Queens, was pronounced dead at Elmhurst Hospital.

Garcia was arrested on a charge of manslaughter. He does not have a significant criminal history.

It was the ninth killing in the city’s subway system this year, and the 10th in transit.

The latest in a series of high-profile incidents in the New York City transit system has left transit president Rich Davey frustrated.

“Yeah, it’s frustrating, you know, I wish I could wave a magic wand and, you know, get folks who need mental health services mental health,” Davey said. “Some of these crimes are senseless. Yesterday’s act, it seems, was senseless. Was over a cellphone, for God’s sake.”

Davey toured the Union Square station Tuesday, which has been the scene of several incidents in recent months-where there was a sizable police presence in the afternoon.

Conductors have been ordered to make announcements to reassure riders when police are onboard or on the platforms.

Police are hoping to prevent what riders fear most-random, unprovoked attacks. Just this weekend, German Sabio survived being shoved into the path of a 6 train in The Bronx. A woman was brutally beaten in Jamaica, Queens last month. Others have been shot and stabbed.

Davey says some of the attacks have happened despite police presence on the platforms.

“I think we’re doing everything we can, you know?” Davey said. “And NYPD, I know this morning, we met with another 63 police officers that are graduating that will be brought here to transit. So look, I think we can always do more, to your point, but there’s a lot going on. That’s what we’re highlighting today.”

NYC Crime: 18-year-old in custody after teen killed in shooting on subway in Queens

FAR ROCKAWAY, Queens (WABC) — An 18-year-old is in custody after a teen was killed in a shooting on the subway in Queens.

Police have identified the 15-year-old killed on Friday as Jayjon Burnett.

Police say a single gunshot rang out on a southbound A train just before 3:45 p.m. Friday after a dispute broke out between two groups of teens.

The bullet struck Burnett in the chest.

A Good Samaritan escorted the teen off the train when it arrived at the Mott Avenue Station in Far Rockaway. Once on the platform, two transit bureau officers that were patrolling the station rushed over to the victim to render aid. EMS later arrived to perform CPR.

The teen was taken to Cohen’s Children’s Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

NYPD detectives are looking at MTA cameras and speaking to witnesses.

“We’ve seen a lot this year where disputes quickly lead to verbal arguments and quickly lead to physical disputes confrontations that unfortunately have led to violence,” said NYPD Transit Bureau Chief Jason Wilcox.

Police sources say they are looking into a gang component to the shooting, and they stress it was not a random act of violence.

Service on the A train was suspended between Far Rockaway-Mott Ave and Broad Channel in both directions during the investigation.

The shooting death is the eighth person killed in the transit system this year.

NYC Crime: Woman arrested after man fatally stabbed on MTA Bronx bus

MOTT HAVEN, The Bronx (WABC) — A man was fatally stabbed during a feud aboard an MTA bus in the Bronx, the eighth person to be killed in the transit system this year, and the third person to be fatally stabbed in transit in 10 days.

Lamont Barkley, 55, got into a verbal dispute with a man and woman, believed to be boyfriend and girlfriend, on a BX19 bus at about 8:25 p.m. Sunday night.

The argument escalated and police say the man stabbed Barkley multiple times in the stomach at East 149th Street and Gerard Avenue. He died at the hospital.

Detectives first encountered 42-year-old Ebony Jackson on Sunday night at Lincoln Hospital, where she was being treated for injuries they believe she suffered in the scuffle.

Detectives believe Barkley first got into a dispute with Jackson at Glen Roy’s bar at 145 East 149th Street, down the street from where he was killed. They believe when Barkley left the bar, Jackson called her boyfriend, who confronted then Barkley on the bus.

The boyfriend has not been apprehended.

Jackson remains at Lincoln Hospital, where she is being treated. She is being charged with murder and manslaughter.

Barkley’s death is the eighth to happen in the transit system this year.

Last week, 38-year-old Charles Moore was getting off a northbound 4 train in the Bronx Thursday night when he was stabbed multiple times in the back and chest by a suspect who came up behind him in what police said they believe was an unprovoked attack.

Just hours before Moore was stabbed and killed, two other victims were stabbed in seemingly random attacks on the subway.

On Monday, riders said they now have more questions about where and if they are truly safe riding the city’s transit, but many told Eyewitness News they don’t have a choice.

“It’s hard, and then you have to go to work through this in the morning and you go a couple of blocks down, it’s becoming zombieville, it’s just bad,” one resident said.

Police are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or for Spanish, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782). The public can also submit their tips by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website at https://crimestoppers.nypdonline.org/ or on Twitter @NYPDTips. All calls are strictly confidential.
