Diet plays a significant role in controlling Type 2 diabetes and as Sumaiya A, Clinical Dietitian, Fortis Hospital, Kalyan, points out, one such beneficial food item for people with diabetes is nuts as they have many nutritional benefits. Nuts are high in monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, fibre, vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients. The dietitian points out that when a diabetic person consumes nuts, they feel fuller. High blood sugar: Why you should have THESE nuts

Sumaiya A lists the different types of nuts that are good for people with diabetes and why:

1) Almond: Consumption of this nut is especially good when it comes to glucose control in pre-diabetes. Almonds are high in many nutrients along with fiber, vitamin E, magnesium, and vitamin 12, so include them in snacks.

2) Pistachio: It has a low glycemic index and eating pistachios improves glycemic status in people having Type 2 diabetes. A Mediterranean diet rich in pistachios improves glucose levels, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and total cholesterol levels.

3) Walnut: It is a store house of omega 3 and is also used to make walnut oil. Walnut contains protein and polyunsaturated fats. High cholesterol: Effective lifestyle changes to lower cholesterol in winters | Health

Winters can increase risk of several ailments and health conditions and it’s partly due to our sedentary lifestyle during the season and also the fact that we eat high-calorie food more often as compared to other seasons. While pakoras, fries, bread rolls may taste heavenly with a cup of tea, if eaten regularly such foods can wreak havoc with our bad cholesterol levels or LDL (low-density lipoprotein). Cholesterol is a waxy substance present in the cells of our body that aids in making hormones, vitamin D and substances that help in digestion. Dr. Suman Bhandari – Consultant, Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Escorts, Okhla, New Delhi shares some useful tips.

1. Continue to exercise at home or when there is sun outside, one can step outside well covered with multiple layers of clothes, woollen cap/muffler for walks and workouts.

2. Avoid excessive fried/high-sugar food and instead have fruits and vegetables (at least 4-5 serving) per day. Eat radish, carrot etc as a snack. Adding soluble fibre like Isabgol, leafy vegetables, eggplant, okra, oats, grain like barley and whole pulses will also help reduce cholesterol.

3. Avoid sugar-sweetened beverages and treats like ice cream, sweets, gajak, rewari, cake, cookies etc.

4. Avoid red meat like mutton, pork, lamb and eat fish and chicken instead.

5. Avoid pakoras, potato chips, onion rings, too many eggs.

6. Avoid excessive drinking or smoking.

7. Foods (margarine and granula bars) fortified with 2 gm of plant steroid can reduce LDL by 10%.

8. Omega-3 supplements like fatty fish can reduce triglycerides and substitute red meats.

9. Consuming soy milk (2 and half cups) or tofu 25gm can reduce LDL by 5-6%.

10. Nuts: Eating even 2 ounces of nuts per day like almonds, walnuts, peanuts can reduce LDL by upto 5% in addition to other heart healthy factors.

“Reduce intake of saturated fats or trans fats. One of the most common reasons of bad levels of cholesterol is due to the food we eat. Reducing the intake of saturated fats can go a long way in controlling cholesterol levels during winters,” says Dr Shukla.

“Overweight people are much more prone to suffering from bad levels of cholesterol, making it important to cut down and maintain one’s body weight. A smarter way for making heart healthy food at home is to use the zero-oil cooking method. Oil is known to be harmful for the human body in the long run and there is a lot of misconception among the general public that adding oil means adding flavour to the food. The same food taste can be achieved without the use of oil. Lowering the consumption of oil won’t be harmful for the body as it is already present inside in the form of good cholesterol,” adds Dr Shukla.

From Nuts to Protein Snacks, 4 Foods You Think Are High Protein but Aren’t

  • Protein has grown in popularity since the mid-2000s, partly because of its links to weight loss.
  • Products labelled as “high protein” can contain less of the macronutrient than you might think, a nutritionist said.
  • Similarly, foods like nut butters, often considered good protein sources, don’t contain that much.

Foods high in protein are growing in popularity, but not everything you might presume is a rich source of the macronutrient actually is, according to a nutritionist.

Protein is one of three macronutrients, alongside carbs and fats, that make up all our foods. 

It’s essential for overall health, but particularly important for active people or anyone with a fat loss or muscle-building goal. It helps muscles recover and grow and is satiating so keeps you full. Adults in the US are advised to eat 0.8 grams protein per kilogram of bodyweight a day. 

Protein has grown in popularity since the early 2000s after studies suggested it could help with weight loss, a food historian wrote in The Conversation, leading to the rise of high-protein diets. The worldwide market for protein food products is projected to grow to over $70 billion by 2025, up from $52 billion in 2020, according to a report by market data company Statista.

Increased interest in protein has led some food companies to add “high-protein” labels to their products. But such foods are not always actually that high in protein, and the label often comes with a hefty price tag, registered nutritionist Graeme Tomlinson told Insider. 

Similarly, many whole foods that people think are good protein sources often aren’t actually as rich in the macronutrient as they’d hope, he said. 

There’s nothing wrong with these foods though. “There are no ‘bad’ foods, but these are simply not dense in protein in relation to how much energy they contain,” Tomlinson said. “It matters if they are high in energy and low in protein simply because they are no longer protein-dense, which is the point.”

For a protein hit, focus on foods like Greek yogurt, lean meat, and eggs.

Tomlinson shared four foods that aren’t as protein-rich as you might think.

1. Nuts

Nuts are a nutritious food providing fiber, which supports a healthy gut microbiome, as well as healthy fats, as Insider’s Gabby Landsverk reported.

They are also a protein source, but you’d have to eat quite a lot to get a good serving of the macronutrient, according to Tomlinson.

“While nuts do contain a decent amount of protein they are also calorie-dense,” Tomlinson said. “For example, 100 grams of peanuts contains 30 grams of protein, but also 620 calories.” 

According to the USDA, a serving of nuts is one ounce or 28 grams, which is about a handful.

This may not be an issue for all, but if you’re trying to stick to a calorie deficit to lose weight, keeping an eye on your portion size might be helpful. 

However, research also suggests that our bodies don’t absorb all the calories in nuts, and they might be 15-25% lower in calories than previously thought, as Insider’s Hilary Brueck reported.

2. Protein snacks

There are lots of so-called protein snacks available in grocery stores these days, but their marketing can be misleading, according to Tomlinson.

He uses the example of a popular brand of protein bites in the UK, where he is based.

“Despite celebrating these as a protein snack, the reality is that for 132 calories you’re getting a pathetic four grams of protein,” he said. “You’d be better off eating two low-fat cheeses and getting quadruple the protein for the same calories.”

Similarly, some “protein” nut bars contain around 250 calories and only offer around 10 grams of protein, Tomlinson said. For comparison, 100 grams of chicken breast contains around 110 calories and has around 25 grams of protein.

Remember to read the nutritional information before you buy, he said. 

3. Protein bagels and breads

Bread products, from loaves to bagels, labeled as “high protein,” often contain barely more than the “regular” versions, Tomlinson said.

Tomlinson points to the example of a protein bagel thin.

“With eight grams of protein per 160 calories it seems like an OK deal,” he said. “But regular bagels contain around 230 calories and nine grams of protein. Is it really worth switching out your favourite regular bagel in the name of more protein? Not really.”

4. Peanut butter

Peanut butter provides healthy fats, energy, and some protein but just like whole nuts, it’s nowhere near as protein-rich as many hope.

“Hailed as the greatest health food of the 2010s, many have lauded it as a high-protein snack too,” Tomlinson said. “But while packed with nutrients, its protein profile is identical to that of peanuts — calorie-dense and definitely not protein-dense.”

A 15 gram serving (about one teaspoon) of peanut butter contains around four grams of protein and 95 calories.

A Chinese man rode a hydrogen ballon to pick pine nuts. He ended up drifting 300km

A man who lost control of his hydrogen balloon while harvesting pine nuts in China has been found and rescued – after landing in a forest two days later and more than 300 kilometers (186 miles) away.

The man, surnamed Hu, had been working alongside a colleague on Sunday in Hailin county, Heilongjiang province, when they lost control of the balloon. While his colleague jumped to safety, Hu missed his chance and drifted away.

He was not found until 9 a.m. local time on Tuesday when – after tracing his mobile phone signal – a rescue team made up of more than 500 people from the local police and fire departments spotted his balloon stuck in a tree, state-run Global Times reported on Wednesday.

“I almost gave up,” Hu told the Chinese state-run broadcaster CCTV. “Thanks to the rescuers, otherwise, I wouldn’t be alive.”

Hu told interviewers he had been cold and hungry during the ordeal. However, he was largely unharmed, suffering what were described as only minor injuries to his waist.

The use of hydrogen or helium balloons to harvest pine nuts has become more common in China in recent years and there are occasionally reports of pickers being swept away – though not usually as far as Hu.

In 2019, two men picking pine cones in China’s Changbai mountains reportedly lost control of their balloon and drifted 10 kilometers (6 miles) – before landing safely and being arrested for breaking aviation regulations. In another case, in 2017, a nut picker went missing near the North Korea border after his balloon became untethered.

Even without out-of-control balloons, harvesting pine nuts in China can be a dangerous business. Traditionally, pickers wearing spiked shoes climb the trees – which can grow to 20 meters (about 65 feet) – and falls can be fatal.

Prince Harry’s friends said he was ‘f—–g nuts’ for dating Meghan Markle: book

Prince Harry’s pals from England’s prestigious Eton College said he was “f- -king nuts” for dating Meghan Markle after she berated them for their “jokes about sexism, feminism and transgender people,” a new book claims.

The Duke of Sussex invited Markle, then his girlfriend, to meet his friends during a shooting weekend at the royal family’s Sandringham country estate in 2016 for “endless banter, jokes — and a lot of drinking,” according to “Revenge: Meghan, Harry and the War between the Windsors,” excerpts of which were obtained by The Sun.

The group at Sandringham included 16 of Harry’s pals, as well as their wives and girlfriends. But Markle did not enjoy the comedy among the friends, according to the book, written by British journalist Tom Bower.

“Without hesitation, Meghan challenged every guest whose conversation contravened her values,” the book claims. “According to Harry’s friends, again and again she reprimanded them about the slightest inappropriate nuance. Nobody was ­exempt.”

Harry apparently “had not anticipated ­Meghan’s reaction.”

The pals concluded that Markle was a “dampener on the party” and that Harry “must be f- -king nuts” for dating her.

Photo shows Rudy Giuliani being escorted from White House after ‘nuts’ Trump election conspiracist meeting

A top aide to Mark Meadows has shared with the January 6 committee a photo of her then-boss escorting Rudy Giuliani out of the White House after a contentious meeting with Donald Trump and West Wing officials.

The photo was part of accounts from Ms Hutchinson and others about an explosive meeting in the Oval Office and around the White House on 18 December, 2021, during which Mr Giuliani and Sidney Powell attempted along with Gen Mike Flynn to convince Mr Trump to seize voting machines and take his plans to overturn the election even further.

But the group clashed with the White House counsel and other attorneys for the White House who rejected their ideas as idiotic and not based in reality, while repeatedly pressing them for evidence of fraud that they did not have.

And according to Ms Hutchinson’s text message from that day, it ended with the former mayor being escorted from the presidential residence under Mr Meadows’s watchful eye to ensure he didn’t “wander” back to the Oval Office.

The meeting was rife with insults and accusations of disloyalty, according to multiple attendees and witnesses who testified on Tuesday. Ms Powell and her colleagues apparently pushed the president to name her a special counsel with the power to investigate election fraud, and to take other, drastic actions including seizing voting machines from states around the country.

Those ideas were rejected by Mr Cipollone and Eric Herschmann, a fellow White House attorney, who said they repeatedly pressed Ms Powell and Mr Giuliani for evidence of their claims.

The group responded with a “general disregard” for the importance of backing up one’s claims with facts, Mr Cipollone and Mr Herschmann testified.

The rumours that Mr Trump had considered assigning Ms Powell to the role of special counsel were previously reported; what was not known publicly was the extent to which White House legal experts fought back against the fringe members of Donald Trump’s inner circle who were pushing a wide and almost inconcievably-broad spectrum of election fraud conspiracies.

And it paints a picture of a White House in total disarray in its final weeks as Mr Giuliani, Mr Flynn and Ms Powell apparently made it all the way to a meeting with Donald Trump in the Oval Office without a single high-level staffer finding out before it happened.

‘It’s nuts’: Real estate agents describe chaos in New York City’s hot rental market

Renting an apartment in New York City this summer? Say hello to sky-high prices and a fight to the finish.

Amid the heat and the occasional rain, there’s a mad scramble to rent affordable apartments in Gotham, which has been undersupplied for many years. Real estate agents describe the mayhem when it comes to prices.

“It’s nuts,” Jessica Peters, a real estate agent with Douglas Elliman, told MarketWatch. “We can’t even keep up anymore. We’re, like, let’s just put up this crazy number, and we’re getting it.”

Offices in the city are trying to woo more employees back: The city is not near full capacity yet — foot traffic to office buildings in NYC is still down 40.6% compared to pre-pandemic levels. But some workers are coming back, restaurants, movie theaters and Broadway are back, and college students are preparing to start school. 

Consequently, the median monthly rent is up $725 in June on the year and $59 on the previous month, according to Zillow. The median monthly rent in NYC is $3,300, 53% higher than the national median of $2,155.

Peters said that the reality was far worse on the ground. “I just rented something … in Williamsburg. It’s a great two-bedroom ground floor unit, with a big backyard,” she said. “We were asking $6,500. We got $7,000.”

Peters, who specializes in the Brooklyn area, said that while rental prices may be fluctuating a little, the reality is clear for someone looking to be in the city.

“If you’re coming back after not renting in either Brooklyn or Manhattan in the last ten years, a lot of renters will be in for a rude awakening,” Peters added.

(Reminder: Realtors and real estate agent make money on a commission basis, meaning the hotter the market, the higher their earnings.)

That said, the rental market in New York is reflecting a broader intensification of the inventory pressures, which is leading to bidding wars among renters across the country.

But in New York, one of the most expensive cities in the U.S., even some tenants in rent-stabilized apartments cannot catch a break. The city’s Rent Guidelines Board has signed off on hikes as high as 3.25% for new one-year leases, and 5% for two-year leases.

Mihal Gartenberg, a real estate agent with Coldwell Banker Warburg, said the market’s wrath was normal; it was just operating on a demand-and-supply basis.

There are people who are simply willing to pay more, he said. “It’s getting to the point where we’re not the ones deciding what these are going for,” Gartenberg added. “This is a true market enterprise.”

Technology was aiding some renters in their search for a home.

“We priced it in my opinion… quite high,” Gartenberg said, at $7,800, “but we ended up taking even more. The person who ended up taking the apartment offered $400 more… we had an offer of $8,200, and they also offered to pay the broker fee, which is an additional month.” 

‘I feel very uncomfortable with this idea that the first person to see a listing is the first one to get it.’

Over this past weekend, she had open houses for two apartments in the Two Bridges area in lower Manhattan.

“I’m only going to be showing it at the open house. I like to have a level playing field,” Gartenberg said ahead of the event. “I feel very uncomfortable with this idea that the first person to see a listing is the first one to get it.”

Buying a home was worth considering, the real estate agents said, given how intense the rental market has become.

Peters said many renters are attempting to become homeowners because rents have risen so dramatically. “People are starting to reevaluate whether or not they should just purchase at this point,” she said.

“Why would I want to spend $10,000 a month on a rental if I qualify for a purchase? It might not be exactly what they wanted, it might be slightly smaller, but it’s still going to be better than spending $120,000 a year in rent,” she added.

“Do not go see things at your price point,” Gartenberg said. “Because where the market is today, is going above your price point.”

But be prepared for bidding wars when buying for a home, Gartenberg warned. She put a newly renovated apartment in Hudson Heights on the market, which is selling “well above ask,” she said, so much that “it made me scared.” The sale on the apartment is not closed yet so she said she was not able to discuss how far above asking the bidder went.

Gartenberg priced her Two Bridges apartments at $3,550 for a two-bedroom unit on the top floor, and at $3,050 for a one-bedroom unit.

On Saturday, her open houses were full. Everything went above the ask. “We had so much interest, we were able to divert offers to a not-yet-listed apartment and rent that, too,” Gartenberg said in a follow-up email. 

Half of the offers that came in were from people who had seen the apartment via FaceTime, or from a video she had sent them.

Gartenberg offered rental tips for the summer.

Get your paperwork in order, such as your proof of income, photo ID, 1040 tax form, bank statements, and other financial documents. Also, get your job to write a letter to say you’re in good standing, Gartenberg said.

Given the number of rentals going for above asking, be prepared to look below your price point, she added. If you know which building you want to live in, get in touch with the landlord’s agent, she said, and find out what’s coming to market.
