Dow closes 100 points higher, S&P 500 and Nasdaq notch best week since November

Stocks rose Friday as investors digested bank earnings and bet inflation would ease in 2023.

All of the major indexes fought their way into the green after beginning the day deep in the red.The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 112.77 points, or 0.33%, to 34,302.74. The S&P 500 rose 0.4% to 3,999.08, and the Nasdaq Composite advanced 0.71% to 11,079.16.

The S&P and Nasdaq each posted their second consecutive up week and best weekly performance since November. The tech-heavy Nasdaq was the outperformer for the week after rising 4.82%. The S&P advanced 2.67%, and the Dow added 2%.

Bank earnings weighed on equities to start the day, but sentiment reversed as investors appeared to shrug off negative news that was expected anyway to some degree, according to Ross Mayfield, investment strategy analyst at Baird.

“Financials weren’t really quite expected to have a blockbuster quarter,” he said. “It’s just providing a bit of a sentiment wave, and since the banks lead earnings season they can kind of set the tone for how investors look at the broader picture.”

“Frankly, the market has rallied pretty nicely over the last few weeks, absent a catalyst, and so there might be a little bit of profit taking out of earnings season going,” Mayfield added.

Wells Fargo, whose profits for the last quarter had been cut by half, said it’s preparing for the economy to “get worse than it’s been over the last few quarters.”

JPMorgan Chase posted revenue that beat expectations, but even so, the bank warned it’s setting aside more money to cover credit losses because a “mild recession” is its “central case.” The bank posted a $2.3 billion provision for credit losses in the quarter, a 49% increase from the third quarter.

The CEOs of Citigroup and Bank of America also said they’re anticipating a “mild recession.”

Elsewhere, Delta Air Lines reported earnings and revenue that beat estimates for the final quarter of 2022. However, the stock slid about 4%. Investors have been awaiting these results to gain more insight into the health of the economy.

In economic data, the University of Michigan consumer sentiment survey showed the one-year inflation outlook down to 4%, the third straight monthly decrease and the lowest level since April 2021.

That followed December’s CPI report, released Thursday, which showed prices declined 0.1% over November. While prices rose at a 6.5% pace compared to the previous year, the results heightened hopes that the Federal Reserve may soon slow its hiking.

There’s confusion, optimism over China’s shift away from zero-Covid: British Chamber of Commerce

Beijing’s “U-turn” on Covid policies is leading to both confusion and optimism, said Steven Lynch, managing director at the British Chamber of Commerce in China.

“There’s a lot of optimism and hope for 2023, but there is huge amounts of confusion,” he told CNBC’s “Squawk Box Asia,” describing the departure from strict Covid rules as happening “almost overnight.”

He said there may still be “enormous inconsistencies” between local policies and the central government’s rules, and people remain concerned about falling sick.

“One thing is very clear Covid is now here. Covid is pretty rife here in Beijing. And I think that brings a whole new set of challenges to what’s going to face China,” he said.

Credit Suisse says inflation is still not a problem in China

China’s inflation is likely to stay below 3% in the next 12 to 18 months, and the central bank is comfortable with this range, according to Jack Siu, Greater China chief investment officer at Credit Suisse.

“We don’t think CPI is an issue in China, in fact, it’s going to be remaining steady within this range of 1% to 3% in the foreseeable future,” he told CNBC’s “Street Signs Asia.” Inflation soared in many economies, but consumer prices in China remained moderate due to weak demand.

But China is likely to see “a resurgence in consumer activity” in the coming six months as people get used to living with the virus after some back and forth in the reopening of the economy, Siu said.

“In the second quarter, we expect the GDP to rally to 6.1% — partly it’s base effects, partly because people are living more normally,” he said.

China’s producer prices fell in November, while consumer prices rose

China’s producer price index fell 1.3% in November compared to a year ago, extending its decline after shedding 1.3% in October, and slightly beating estimates for a 1.4% contraction in a Reuters poll.

The nation’s consumer price index rose 1.6% in November on an annualized basis, in line with expectations and easing from October’s reading of 2.1%.

The onshore and offshore Chinese yuan strengthened, and were around 6.94 per dollar shortly after the economic data releases.

South Korea posts smaller current account surplus for October

South Korea registered a current account surplus of $880 million in October, a decline from September’s $1.6 billion.

Direct investment assets in South Korea increased by $2.75 billion, compared to $4.74 billion a month ago. Direct investment liabilities increased from $430 million to $810 million.

South Korea has been posting a current account surplus for the year, except for the months of July and August. A current account surplus indicates that a country sells more to the world than it buys from outside its borders.

Stocks finish higher, S&P 500 breaks 5-day losing streak

Stocks closed higher, with the S&P 500 snapping its longest losing streak since October.

The S&P added 0.75% to finish at 3,963.51. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 183.56 points, or 0.55%, to settle at 33,781.48, while the Nasdaq Composite rallied 1.13% to end at 11,082.00.

Interest on 30-year fixed rate mortgages falls

The cost of financing a home has ticked lower for a fourth consecutive week, according to Freddie Mac.

The weekly average rate on a 30-year mortgage is now 6.33%, down from 6.49% last week. Over the past month, the interest rate on these loans has come down about 75 basis points: On Nov. 10, the average rate on a fixed 30-year mortgage was 7.08%.

Even with the decline in the short term, the cost of financing a home loan is up significantly from a year ago. Last year at this time, the rate on a 30-year mortgage averaged 3.1%.

Despite the decline in rates, demand for home loans continues to decline. Mortgage application volume slid 1.9% last week, compared to the week before that, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association.

Part of the yield curve is now most inverted since 2001

The inversion of the 3-month and 10-year Treasury yield curve is now the deepest since January 2001 at nearly 90 basis points, according to CNBC data. The short end of the curve soared to 4.30% from just 0.05% at the beginning of the year as traders priced in higher interest rates.

The yield curve inverts when shorter-term Treasury rates rise above longer-term yields. Many economists view the 2-year 10-year part of the yield curve as more predictive of a potential recession.

Cathie Wood pointed to that part of the yield curve, which is the most inverted since the early 1980s. The popular investor said the bond market is signaling that the Federal Reserve is making a “serious mistake” with its jumbo rate hikes.

China stocks notch trillion-dollar gain on hopes of reopening, better U.S. ties

  • Hang Seng surges to best week since 2011
  • Tech, property stocks lead gains
  • Yuan, commodities, China-sensitive luxury stocks rise

SINGAPORE, Nov 4 (Reuters) – Chinese markets soared and the yuan rose on Friday, with about a trillion dollars added to the value of Chinese stocks in week, as rumours and news reports fed hopes for twin relief in U.S.-China tension and China’s tough COVID rules.

The Hang Seng (.HSI) surged 5.3% and notched its biggest weekly gain in 11 years. The Shanghai Composite (.SSEC) rose 2.4% for a 5.3% weekly gain, the largest in more than two years and China-sensitive assets around the world rose sharply.

Bloomberg News reported initial U.S. inspections of audit papers at U.S.-listed Chinese companies – a long-running point of regulatory tension and risk – finished ahead of time, raising hopes that the U.S. officials were satisfied.

Unsubstantiated social media posts flagging an aim to relax COVID rules in March have also driven optimism all week and seemed to get new momentum on Friday.

A former Chinese senior disease control official told a closed-door conference that substantial changes to the country’s zero-COVID policy were set to take place in the next five to six months, according to a recording of the session heard by Reuters.

“Any indication that some rules could be relaxed would be an immediate dose of grease in the jarring cogs of China’s economy,” said Sophie Lund-Yates, lead equity analyst at Hargreaves Lansdown.

Focus was now on a press conference from China health authorities on Nov. 5.

Gains were broad, overshadowing a downbeat mood in global markets on the prospect of U.S. interest rates rising further than previously expected. Property and tech shares led the way.

Shares in online giants Alibaba (9988.HK) and JD.com (9618.HK) each rose more than 10% and the Hang Seng Tech index (.HSTECH) rose 7.5%. Property manager Country Garden Services rose 15% and an index of mainland developers (.HSMPI) rose 9%.

Hedge fund manager Lei Ming said the re-opening rumour is just the trigger for a rebound in an oversold market.

“The main reason for the market jump is that selling pressure had been exhausted after the market fell so much.”

Gains in value, across Hong Kong, Shenzhen and Shanghai over the week are approximately $1 trillion. However the Hang Seng remains down 30% this year against a 24% fall in world stocks (.MIWD00000PUS). The Shanghai Composite is down 15% this year.

The rally extended to commodities markets with iron ore futures surging on Friday, and China-sensitive stocks listed in London and Europe.

Miners such as Rio Tinto (RIO.L) and Anglo American (AAL.L) rose sharply along with luxury retails like LVMH (LVMH.PA) and Swiss jeweller Richemont (CFR.S).

U.S.-listed China stocks surged in premarket trading, with KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF and iShares MSCI China ETF (MCHI.O) set for weekly gains after sharp declines in October.

Strategists at TD Securities continue to expect a gradual easing of zero-COVID restrictions, warning that markets could be in for some disappointment if investors are expecting something more rapid.

BUY THE RUMOUR

Changes to COVID policies have not been officially flagged. A foreign ministry spokesman said on Tuesday he was not aware of the situation, when asked about rumours on social media that China was planning a reopening from strict COVID curbs in March.

Bloomberg News also reported on Friday, citing unnamed people familiar with the matter, that China was working towards relaxing rules that penalise airlines for carrying COVID-positive passengers.

A foreign ministry spokesman later said he was not aware of the report and that China’s COVID policies were consistent and clear.

An early conclusion to audit checks has also not been confirmed by either Chinese or U.S. officials. Yet markets have desperate reasons to rally after the Hang Seng hit a 13-year low last month in the wake of China’s Communist Party Congress.

“I do not see anything new that has changed the Hong Kong and China investment environment,” said Frank Benzimra, head of Asia equity strategy at Societe Generale in Hong Kong.

“The only explanation I have is that the sell-off has been excessive post-Congress, valuation on some offshore names has been very distressed, and there is some bottom-fishing.”

The currency joined in the rally, jumping more than 0.5% to touch a one-week high of 7.2340 per dollar.

iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max Hands-on: No Notch, Dynamic Island, 48MP Camera

This story is part of Focal Point iPhone 2022, CNET’s collection of news, tips and advice around Apple’s most popular product.

Apple unveiled a new line of iPhones at its “Far Out” event on Wednesday, but it reserved its biggest changes for the higher-end iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models. The new standout feature is that the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max each lack a notch. In its place is a small pill-shaped screen cutout that houses a revamped TrueDepth camera unit for Face ID, selfies and video calls. Rather than ignore the cutout, Apple built a system of moving alerts and notifications called Dynamic Island that utilizes the black space around it. Strange name aside, the feature in-person is compelling and looks cool.

Dynamic Island, not present on the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Plus, is just one of the ways Apple widened the gap between Pro and non-Pro iPhone models. Another way is price. The iPhone 14 Pro starts at $999 which is $200 more than the iPhone 14 that starts at $799. The 14 Pro costs the same price as previous Pro models and the iPhone X which debuted in 2018. But some people will be put off by the 14 Pro’s price or the 14 Pro Max which starts at $1,099.

iPhone 14 Display: Goodbye notch, hello Dynamic Island

From the back, the iPhone 14 Pro doesn’t look that much different from last year’s flagship, the iPhone 13 Pro. But from the front, the 14 Pro’s display cutout looks contemporary and fresh compared the notch on the 13 Pro. The first thing I noticed picking up an iPhone 14 Pro was that the infamous notch was gone. The pill-shaped display cutout is so much smaller in comparison.

Apple’s Dynamic Island interface works so well, too. For example, I had a song in Apple Music playing. When I exit the app there was was a tiny waveform on one side of the cutout and a minute thumbnail featuring album artwork on the other. When I tapped on the Dynamic Island, I was immediately taken to the song in the Apple Music app.

Of course the cutout is just one part of the Super Retina XDR display which can now hit 2,000 nits of brightness for better visibility in bright light. By contrast, the iPhone 13 Pro maxes out at 1,200 nits of brightness. The 14 Pro uses LTPO (low-temperature Polycrystalline oxide) technology to bring the refresh rate down to 1Hz, which could help save on battery drain and allow for Always-On display. The 13 Pro’s LTPO screen bottoms out at 10Hz.

iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 Bionic: The new chip for 2022

Apple A16 Bionic chip.

Apple

There’s also the new A16 Bionic chip which this year is just reserved for Pro models. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus use the same version of the A15 Bionic chip found in last year’s iPhone 13 Pro. The A16 chip is more efficient and uses 20% less power than the A15 chip.

The A16 chip features 16 billion transistors on a 4-nanometer process versus 15 billion transistors on the A15’s 5-nanometer. Apart from the added transistor count the new manufacturing process, the jump in computational power might not be as significant from the 13 Pro to the 14 Pro as it was from the 12 Pro to 13 Pro. It’s also uncertain how much RAM the iPhone 14 Pro will have as Apple historically doesn’t share how much RAM is in the iPhone.

The GPU sees an upgrade as well, with 50% more memory bandwidth. The display engine on the A16 Bionic chip helps power the LTPO display as well as the Dynamic Island. Apple says the A16 Bionic’s neural engine is capable of 17 trillion operations per second, which is needed for computational photography.

In my few minutes with the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, system animations seemed smooth and iOS 16 peppy.

iPhone 14 Pro Camera: Pixel binning arrives on the iPhone

The iPhone 14 Pro will feature a 48-megapixel camera. The quad-pixel sensor uses pixel binning to group four pixels and have them act as one large pixel for better light capture. Android phones including the Galaxy S22 Ultra employ a similar technique with high-megapixel camera sensors. The handset’s Pro Raw mode allows photos to be captured at its full 48-megapixel resolution.

Apple developed a new computational image-processing method to take advantage of the new pixel pattern for better color accuracy and detail. It’s called Photonic Engine, which improves the iPhone Pro’s camera performance two times in low-light compared with the iPhone 13 Pro. The 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max can also use the 48-megapixel sensor to “punch-in” a photo, emulating a 2x zoom with the middle 12-megapixels of the sensor.

The Photonic Engine processing also benefits the ultrawide camera with a three times improvement in low-light photos, and two times better on telephoto and front-facing camera photos.

In video capture, Apple said the iPhone 14 Pro will come with Pro Video and Cinematic modes that can now record at 4K and 24 frames per second. Both Pro models also get Apple’s new video image stabilization which is called Action mode. Essentially when you are filming a video, on the top-left corner of the camera preview is the Action mode icon. When i tried it out, it seemed to work well smoothing out hand-shakes. i noticed that if I had video resolution set to 4K that Action mode reduced it down to 2.8K.

iPhone 14 Pro’s camera bump and new TrueDepth camera display cutout.

Apple

iPhone 14 Pro vs. iPhone 13 Pro

With the release of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, Apple also discontinued the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. Even though Apple isn’t selling last year’s Pro models doesn’t mean it’s entirely gone. Various third-party retailers and carriers might continue to sell the old Pro. But should you get an iPhone 13 Pro or and iPhone 14 Pro?

In terms of features, hardware and lifespan the iPhone 14 Pro seems to outshine the iPhone 13 Pro in nearly every way. However, sometimes there isn’t a drastic difference between the two phones. If you own an iPhone 13 Pro it looks like upgrading to the iPhone 14 Pro is unnecessary. But if you have an older iPhone and are trying to choose between the two, I’d likely push you towards the newer 14 Pro, unless you’re getting an absolute killer discount on the 13 Pro.

iPhone 14 Pro: Battery life, price and other features

Apple said the iPhone 14 Pro will feature all-day battery life, longer than previous models. It’ll also include the newly unveiled features found in the base iPhone 14, such as Emergency SOS via satellite, a satellite-based system for communication in cellular and Wi-Fi dead zones, and Crash Detection, which lets the device know if you’ve been in a car accident.

The upcoming iOS 16 will be the operating system powering Apple’s iPhone 14 line out of the box.

The iPhone 14 Pro will start at $999 (£1,099, AU$1,749). The 14 Pro Max will start at $1,099 (£1,199, AU$1,899). Both of Apple’s premium handsets are more expensive than the base iPhone 14 and 14 Plus devices, which start at $799 (£849, AU$1,399) and $899 (£949, AU$1,579) respectively.

Preorders start on Sept. 9, with the phones launching on Sept. 16.

College football Top 25 scores, highlights, games today: Michigan State, Indiana notch dramatic Week 1 wins

Week 1 of the college football season continued it’s build-up on Friday night with eight more games, a couple of which featured serious drama. A Big Ten showdown between Illinois and Indiana came down to the wire before the Hoosiers escaped with a 23-20 victory courtesy of a 1-yard touchdown run from Shaun Shivers with 23 seconds left.

The go-ahead score marked Indiana’s first touchdown since early in the second quarter, and the Hoosiers struggled to run the football all night against a stingy Illinois defensive front. But after the Illini settled for a field goal with 2:16 left to make it 20-16, the Indiana offense came to life in a two-minute drill situation. Missouri transfer quarterback Connor Bazelak led the decisive 75-yard scoring drive — the Hoosiers had just 70 yards in the second half to that point — and set up Shivers’ touchdown by completing 7 of 10 passes on the series.

In other Big Ten action, No. 15 Michigan State got a test from Western Michigan before emerging with a 35-13 win. The Spartans led 21-3 early in the second quarter before hitting a dry spell, allowing the Chippewas to close to within one score late in the third quarter. Ultimately, Michigan State snapped back to life in the fourth quarter to avoid any late-game drama, but things were tense in East Lansing for a while.

Though WMU’s upset bid came up short, there were a couple of unexpected results from the night. Old Dominion knocked off Virginia Tech 20-17 and William & Mary of the FCS upset Charlotte 41-24.

College football scores, highlights, games today: Illinois, Northwestern, Vanderbilt notch big wins in Week 0

Week 0 is sometimes a simple appetizer for the rest of the college football season, but Saturday’s slate of games started with a bang. A handful of unsuspecting matchups went down to the wire, and a few individual efforts shook up our preconceived notions as the 2022 season got underway.

Northwestern delivered the first upset of the year, knocking off Nebraska 31-28 in Dublin, Ireland, behind a dominant performance from its offensive line to the tune of 214 yards on the ground. While the Wildcats pulled off the only real upset of the day, fellow underdogs Austin Peay, Florida A&M and UConn all gave their respective opponents a scare.

The Governors had a real shot of springing the first FCS-over-FBS upset of 2022 before falling 38-27 to Western Kentucky; the Rattlers carved up North Carolina’s pass defense, but were unable to keep up with a depleted roster in a 56-24 loss; and Huskies star running back Nathan Carter had 190 yards rushing in a closer-than-expected 31-20 loss against defending Mountain West champs Utah State.

Not every mismatched game on paper was close, however. Florida State produced three 100-yard rushers in a 47-7 win over Duquesne, while Illinois crushed a struggling Wyoming team 38-6.

CBS Sports was here every step of the way to update you with the latest scores, highlights and storylines throughout the first Saturday of the season.
