Round Up: Here’s What Switch Online Players Think Of GoldenEye 007 So Far

Over on the Nintendo Switch subreddit there was also some conversation about the control setup, but others are just happy to see the return of the iconic shooter:

BBQQA – “I am still floored by this happening. For YEARS me and my buddies would complain that we’d never see this with a modern release, that it’d be stuck in IP Rights hell. But somehow this happened. I don’t think the younger generation truly understands the impact this game had, or how improbable this being on the Switch and Xbox are. It’s insane.”

Odie_Odie – “I still play Goldeneye on my N64 about annually, play it for a few hours over the weekend before storing my system away again and I gotta say, The controls aren’t that bad. It’s very similar to the original. I think a lot of people are realizing they just don’t like Goldeneye because of the controls. They’ve always been there, lol.”

MillwrightWF – “…Just a disclaimer older millennial here so 007 was a huge part of growing up. First of all I let my Fortnite obsessed son play and after him absolutely destroying me in Fortnite this was more my style. He does the building and stuff so that is where he gets me. Haha no building in this game son and I took him out several times. But once he got the controls down he wanted to keep playing! It looks pretty good. Not the jumbled mess I was expecting. No slowdown from the original. Looking forward to getting some more time in tomorrow.”

And here’s what the community over on our sister website Pure Xbox has been saying about the Xbox version of the game:

Gamecuber – “as a veteran of the original game from back in the day this version plays better than ever. The modern control scheme on the Xbox drags it kicking and screaming into the present. I’ve briefly tried the Switch version with the original control layout and it would clearly benefit from an actual N64 controller. The Xbox version played brilliantly with twin thumb sticks.”

Bucky – “Played through the campaign on Agent difficulty on the Switch last night and this morning. Just tried a few levels on Xbox and thought it felt better on Switch, although it did require a little button remapping”

SugarSkullM – “I’m loving this but can’t deny the nostalgia factor (and the force) is strong with this one. Still fun after all these years.”

Techno92LFC – “There’s no doubt I along with other people would have loved to seen the Xbox Live Arcade version so don’t understand why we don’t have that one, Perhaps somebody here knows? However, It’s amazing to see this on an Xbox console and with updated controls.”

Random: GoldenEye Control Troubles On Switch? This Simple Joy-Con Swap Trick Is The Answer

GoldenEye is now available to play on Nintendo Switch. Ah, how long we’ve waited to type that sentence! After 25 years as an N64 exclusive, Rare’s seminal first-person shooter has finally escaped from its 64-bit confines and is now playable via a Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscription, or on Microsoft’s Xbox.

However, anyone who has tried the game already on Switch may well have run into control issues. Frankly, the way the N64 pad inputs map to a modern dual stick controller is a bit messy to say the least, and the default layout is almost guaranteed to have you pressing the wrong buttons and pulling the wrong trigger — at least to begin with. On Xbox, it seems, the controls have been tweaked for dual-analogue control by default, but not on Switch. It’s possible to remap buttons at a system level, of course, (and check out the video above to see Alex explain the simple steps), although remapping can be a minor hassle.

However, we’ve discovered a little trick that any Switch owner can use to quickly transform the controls into something a little closer to the dual-analogue setup that’s become the standard for the genre over the past two decades. Granted, it’s not the most comfortable control scheme, but it’s a decent workaround for anyone who is struggling: Split your Joy-Con and swap the hands you’re holding them in.

Like this. Cross the streams! — Image: Nintendo Life

There’s a little more to it. You’ll also need to go into the in-game settings via the pause screen and switch the control type from the default ‘1.1 Honey’ to ‘1.2 Solitare’, but by switching your left Joy-Con to your right hand and vice versa, the ‘left’ trigger pulls up your sights and the ‘right’ one becomes the trigger — just as you’d find in any standard FPS these days. It also puts WASD movement on the ‘left’ analogue stick while you look with the ‘right’, just as normal.

For reference, here are the instructions in bullet points, ’cause we’re nice like that:

  • Start the game as per normal, using two Joy-Con as a single controller (hold ‘L’ on the left and ‘R’ on the right)
  • Once you’re in a level, pause immediately, go to the Controls screen on your watch and switch the style from ‘1.1 Honey’ to ‘1.2 Solitare’
  • Also, change the ‘Look Up/Down’ setting to ‘Upright’ if you want to invert the default Look controls
  • Unpause the game and put the left Joy-Con in your right hand and vice versa
  • Play GoldenEye on Switch with controls that feel more natural in 2023

Is it perfect? Obviously not. Switching weapons or opening doors isn’t so easy anymore. However, it’s a decent workaround if you’re just not clicking with the unwieldy default NSO layout and don’t want to screw up your other games by remapping buttons.

ALTERNATIVELY, as we mentioned, you can use the Switch’s system-level button remapping feature to switch the sticks from Left to Right, and, optionally, also remap ZR>ZL, and ZL>R.

This has the advantage of you not having to switch your Joy-Con between hands and also working with the Switch Pro Controller. The disadvantage here is that you’ll have to manually change the buttons back again to function ‘normally’ with other games, although you can save the setup as a preset to quickly change between them. Either way, there’s no need to struggle with the default layout — you’ve got options!

Of course, we would definitely recommend playing this one with the official Nintendo Switch Online N64 pad if you’ve got it, but those have been in very short supply ever since they debuted, with stock disappearing the moment it pops up on Nintendo’s online stores. If you’re not lucky enough to have one of those, remap those buttons or give this unconventional setup a go and let us know if it helped!

(Also, don’t forget to switch the ratio to 16:9 in the settings for a full widescreen experience — a first for any game on Switch Online, we think. It looks sharp!)

How does that work for you? Have you found a better workaround, using two controllers perhaps? Let us know in the polls and the comments below.

Nintendo Switch Online Subscribers Get Free N64 Surprise

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers on Switch, Switch Lite, and Switch OLED — or, more specifically, Nintendo Switch Online subscribers with the Expansion Pack — just got a free N64 surprise. In addition to adding the first two Mario Party games on N64 to the Switch Online Expansion Pack library, Nintendo has dished out free N64 icons, the first of their kind.

The icons come as part of a new promotion where each month Nintendo will add new N64 icons for Switch Online for Expansion Pack owners to claim. For the month of November, there are Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask, and Kirby 64 icons. In December, there will be icons for F-Zero X, Yoshi’s Story, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. The promotion will then finish in January, when Mario Kart 64, Paper Mario, and Star Fox 64 will feature.

Below, you can check out an official promotional image for this month’s icons, courtesy of Nintendo PR:

As noted, these icons are locked behind the Expansion Pack tier of the subscription service, which has been the case for all of the free icons Nintendo has released for Switch users this year. In addition to free icons, the Expansion Pack tier allows you access to retro games beyond just the SNES and NES. For example, it nets you N64 games. And it’s N64 that has been the focus of the subscription service lately, hence why there are now N64 icons.

As always, feel free to leave a comment or two letting us know what you think. Will you be redeeming any of these N64 icons and rocking them going forward? If so, which ones?

Nintendo Switch Online Surprise Gives Subscribers Extra Perks

Nintendo Switch users who are already subscribed to Nintendo’s top-tier version of its online service, the Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack option, have some more perks coming their way soon. These limited-time offerings were announced by Nintendo this week a surprise additions tot eh benefits already included in the service and will be live starting on November 1st. They include double the Gold Points spent on eligible games and DLCs as well as some icons that invoke the Nintendo 64 era.

As is the case with some of these announcements, players first found out about these extra perks through some posts on the Nintendo Japan site, but the benefits were later confirmed for other regions as well. The Nintendo of America Twitter account, for example, tweeted about it this weekend to confirm what the perks would be and when they’d start. That tweet also offered a preview of the Nintendo 64 icons that’ll be available come November which include things like the console and controller itself, Mario Kart, Star Fox, Kirby, and other memorable characters and games.

Nintendo didn’t specify what “eligible digital games or DLC” look like, so we don’t know just yet what this deal applies to and what it doesn’t. However, Nintendo does have a couple of high-profile releases coming up, so there’s a good chance subscribers will be able to get double the Gold Points from purchases on things like Bayonetta 3, Pokemon Sword, and Pokemon Shield.

This perk is going on the UK, too, though that promotion said users would get twice the Gold Points on all Nintendo eShop purchases instead of just some of them. But again, if there’s something newish that you’ve been considering buying from the eShop, you probably don’t have much to worry about in terms of eligibility.

Even though these perks are marketed as being limited-time benefits, they’re going on for quite a while. These won’t end until January 31st, and hopefully, something will replace them after they expire to give Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers extra benefits.

Switch Online’s N64 Update Is Live (Version 2.6.0), Here’s What’s Included

Image: Nintendo Life

Switch Online’s N64 library received an update earlier on adding the Nintendo classic Wave Race 64, and also bumping the application all the way up to Version 2.6.0.

Nintendo doesn’t release patch notes for these particular updates, but fortunately Nintendo dataminer OatmealDome is here once again to reveal everything going on behind-the-scenes. This month has quite a few things happening on the back end – with some adjustments to last month’s release, Pokemon Puzzle League:

[NSO – Nintendo 64] Version 2.6.0 is out.
– Wave Race 64 was added.
– The NTSC, German, and PAL French versions of Pokemon Puzzle League had their renderer settings adjusted (settings related to the color framebuffer removed).
– Sorting adjusted to put PAL versions after NTSC.

In addition to this, there were some changes for the N64 application in Japan. Noticeably some changes to Custom Robo V2 and also the Fanta advertisements in Wave Race 64 being replaced with an N64 logo.

Meanwhile, in Japan, there were some additional changes. Notably, it looks like the Fanta advertisements were removed in Wave Race 64.

Dataminer and Nintendo Life user LuigiBlood goes into a bit more detail:

N64 Switch Online 2.6.0:
– Pokémon Puzzle League has seen removed config and updated PCB and NRO (recompiled code). Probably a fix for something.
– Custom Robo V2 has updated PCB and NRO.
– Wave Race 64 Rumble Pak (Japan) has replaced Fanta advertisements with Nintendo 64 logo.

This latest update follows on from some changes in Version 2.4.0. You can learn more in our previous coverage.

Image: Nintendo

Nintendo has been slowly but surely fleshing out its Switch Online + Expansion Pack service with new DLC content for games like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and also by bolstering its retro libraries with plenty of classic titles.

Knowing this could be a tad overwhelming for some players at this point, it’s now uploaded a guide on how exactly to redeem and download paid DLC when your Switch Online membership is active. Apart from the Mario Kart 8 Deluxe – Booster Course Pass, you can see it’s also highlighted Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Splatoon 2’s Octo Expansion as well as the N64 app.

The Switch Online service has been chugging along at a steady pace over the past few months. Nintendo has added more ‘Missions’ and ‘Rewards, it’s updated the service’s mobile app, and in July it added two SNES titles, one NES game, and four Sega Genesis / Mega Drive games to the existing retro libraries. Pokémon Puzzle League joined the N64 service, too.

Switch Online Should Leverage GameCube, Wii And Deliver “More” N64 Content, Says Former NoA Boss

Former Nintendo America president Reggie Fils-Aimé recently had a chat with CNET about his new book Disrupting the Game.

While the usual batch of Nintendo-related questions popped up, Reggie had a little extra to share on this particular occasion. Firstly, he doesn’t expect Nintendo to revive those “mini consoles” like the SNES and NES classics now that it’s got a strong way to deliver legacy content via the Switch Online service.

In his opinion, he thinks Nintendo should focus its energy and efforts on the delivery of “more” N64 content, and perhaps even some other legacy systems like the GameCube and Wii, and really take advantage of this aspect of Nintendo. Here’s part of the exchange:

On the NES Classic, SNES Classic and whether mini consoles will come back

Reggie: “Will it come back? Will there be other physical boxes with legacy content? I don’t think so. If I were back at Nintendo for a day, I would be much more focused on: How does the company leverage all of its great content, deliver it to the consumer through that Nintendo online experience? Which they are doing… they’re putting out some N64 content, they’re working with other platform holders to bring out some of that legacy content. But that’s where the opportunity is. Nintendo still has more N64 content to leverage.

They’ve got GameCube content to leverage, They’ve got Wii content. I see this future of digitally delivered content to you, the consumer, as just this burgeoning opportunity that I would want to keep taking advantage of.”

The last time we checked in on the SNES and NES Mini, combined sales of the systems had surpassed the ten million mark. While it’s quite an amazing feat for the re-release of two legacy consoles, Switch Online is admittedly generating a lot more interest, with subscriptions (as of last November) exceeding 32 million users.

The system itself also has shifted more than 107 million units as of March 31, 2022 – meaning Nintendo Switch Online and Expansion Pack subscriptions will likely continue to rise.

What do you think about Reggie’s comments regarding Switch Online? Should Nintendo be monopolising on now-classic systems like the GameCube and Wii, in addition to the N64? This follows the news Pokémon Snap will be coming to the N64 Switch Online library next week. After this release, the only other known games scheduled for this library include Custom Robo and its sequel, which are currently exclusive to Japan’s NSO service.
