Houston Texans expected to seek second interviews with Bills’ Leslie Frazier, Chiefs’ Eric Bieniemy, sources say

The Houston Texans are expected to request second interviews with Buffalo Bills defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy after Sunday’s AFC Championship Game, sources told ESPN.

Both candidates believe they have a legitimate chance to land the Texans’ head-coaching job and have begun assembling coaching staffs in the event that they are hired, sources said.

Frazier is said to have had a strong interview with the Texans and has previous head-coaching experience from his time with the Minnesota Vikings. Bieniemy is viewed in many circles as a head coach in waiting, though he has recently been passed over by several teams.

As Houston’s head-coaching search ramps up, the winning coordinator from Sunday’s game could be the loser in the Texans’ search, as they would have to wait to hire him. The Texans could act quicker with the coordinator from the losing team.

This scenario played a key role in the Los Angeles Chargers’ hiring of Brandon Staley last weekend over Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll. Once Staley’s Rams were eliminated from the playoffs, the Chargers were unwilling to wait for Daboll and hired Staley.

Other candidates the Texans have interviewed include quarterback Josh McCown, former Lions and Colts coach Jim Caldwell, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and Ravens assistant head coach David Culley.

Super Bowl teams not allowed in Tampa until 2 days before game

In a season unlike any other, Super Bowl week also will not be like any other.

Super Bowl teams always arrive in the city of the game one week in advance, but this season’s participants are not allowed to arrive in Tampa, Florida, any earlier than the Friday before Super Bowl LV, league sources told ESPN.

If the Buffalo Bills and Green Bay Packers win their conference championship games Sunday, they have tentative plans to arrive in Tampa on Friday, Feb. 5, two days before the Super Bowl, according to sources.

If the Kansas City Chiefs advance to the Super Bowl, they do not plan to arrive in Tampa until the day before the Super Bowl, according to sources.

The fourth team involved in Sunday’s conference championship games is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, who spent the week practicing opposite Raymond James Stadium, in clear sight of the Super Bowl LV banners now hanging on the stadium.

All of these changes and adaptations are being done to keep teams in the COVID-19 prevention routines they have adhered to all season. Teams now will be approaching the Super Bowl like it’s any other road trip during the season, rather than a trip to the biggest game of the season.

This also means that Super Bowl media day, the Monday night event that has become a Super Bowl staple, will be done virtually. News conferences that have been held with players and coaches also will be done virtually.

Many of the other events associated with Super Bowl week also will go virtual or be canceled, according to a source. Even the post-Super Bowl parties for the winning and losing teams are not certain. Teams have the option of flying home immediately after the game.

Had the Los Angeles Rams beaten the Packers last weekend in the divisional round and advanced to play the higher-seeded Bucs on the road, the NFL would have encountered a situation it never has in its history: Sunday’s conference championship game would have been the first to ever be played on the same Super Bowl grass field that already had been installed in advance of the big game.

Fortunately for the NFL, the Packers beat the Rams, averting the potential issue that arises when a team from the Super Bowl host city also hosts the conference championship game.

The NFL installs the Super Bowl field weeks before the actual game itself, and did so in Tampa. The grass for the Super Bowl field is grown months in advance, planned to be unveiled during the big game, but an NFC Championship Game in Tampa would have changed that.

That was not the only change in and around Raymond James Stadium. The league also began transforming the Buccaneers’ parking lot and converting it into fenced-off areas. Many of the Buccaneers banners that surround Raymond James Stadium also have come down in favor of more neutral NFL banners.

NFL Championship games: What you need to know

Whether one of your teams is playing on Sunday, both games have historic value, and will be exciting match-ups to watch.

NFC Championship: Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Green Bay Packers

When: 3:05 p.m. ET on FOX

Who to watch:

The obvious players to watch in this game will be the veteran quarterbacks, and for good reason.

Green Bay’s Aaron Rodgers has a 2020 regular season completion rate over 70% and is first in the league in touchdowns with 48 this season. Rodgers has reached the playoffs 10 seasons and has appeared in 19 playoff games, including winning one Super Bowl.

Tampa Bay’s Tom Brady is considered by many as the G.O.A.T of NFL quarterbacks with 43 playoff appearances in 18 years of postseason play, including nine Super Bowls, winning six times. This is his first season with the Bucs, so his leadership is definitely in the spotlight.

Who has the most to prove:

Both teams have a little something that will light the fire underneath them.

For the Bucs, if they win, this will only be the second time ever the team has reached the Super Bowl. With Brady at the helm for the first time, there is a lot riding on their success.

As far as Green Bay is concerned, it’s the quarterback face-off that really stands to bring some heat. Can Rodgers outplay Brady?

AFC Championship: Kansas City Chiefs vs. Buffalo Bills

When: 6:40 p.m. ET on CBS

Where: Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, Missouri

Who to watch:

Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes has cleared concussion protocol after suffering a hit last week against the Browns, and will be ready to go for the game.
Travis Kelce, the Chiefs’ heavily used tight end, is always a go-to for Mahomes. With 11 touchdowns and over 1,400 yards on the season, Kelce is the 6-foot-5 260 pound offensive weapon for Kansas City, and they should look to him in this match-up.
Wide Receiver Tyreek Hill, who has been an asset for the Chiefs all season, will also be a key player to watch. Hill is currently second in the league for touchdowns with 15 overall, and his season total of 1,276 yards is in the top 10. However, Hill has not scored a touchdown in the postseason, so he will be looking to get his first 6.
Bills’ quarterback Josh Allen has had an uphill battle as an underdog all season, but he is looking to surpass 350 passing yards in this game. Allen has a 69.2% completion rate and already has three post season touchdowns.
Allen will be looking for wide receiver Stefon Diggs to have his third straight game at over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown. He is first in the league for both total yards and total receptions.

Who has the most to prove:

The Bills are definitely the underdogs heading into the game against the current Super Bowl champions. The Chiefs have been dominating all season, but the Bills are looking to punch their ticket to big game for the first time since 1994. The Bills Mafia, as their fans are called, are ready for a renewed reason to cheer.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes, still in concussion protocol, at practice again Friday

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Patrick Mahomes was with the Kansas City Chiefs as they began Friday’s practice session, their last one before Sunday’s AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills at Arrowhead Stadium.

His participation on Friday would appear to put Mahomes on a path to play Sunday. Chiefs coach Andy Reid said Mahomes took all of the snaps in Wednesday’s practice and a majority of them on Thursday.

Mahomes was knocked out of last week’s divisional-round playoff win over the Browns with symptoms of a concussion after he was tackled hard on a running play. He has been in the NFL’s concussion protocol.

Three other key Chiefs players who have been fighting injuries were also present for the start of Friday’s practice: wide receiver Sammy Watkins (calf), running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire (hip, ankle) and cornerback Bashaud Breeland (concussion, shoulder).

Coach Sean McDermott said the Bills were preparing for Mahomes to play.

“I guess at the beginning of the week we weren’t quite sure, and we really won’t know, I guess,” McDermott said. “It’s probably trending in that direction, so that’s what we’re anticipating.”

ESPN’s Mike Reiss contributed to this report.

Deshaun Watson Trade Value: NFL Exec Thinks Texans QB Worth ‘At Least’ This Price

The Houston Texans presumably don’t want to trade Deshaun Watson, a legitimate franchise quarterback in the prime of his NFL career.

But, with all signs pointing to a superstar who wants out of his current situation, the Texans ultimately might have no other choice.

Thus, the question becomes: What can Houston realistically expect to receive in a trade involving Watson?

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler recently posed this question to front-office personnel across the NFL, and several evaluators told him Houston definitely could land at least three first-round draft picks.

“Oh yeah — he’s worth at least that,” an NFC executive said, per Fowler. “The haul would be pretty insane.”

As Fowler notes, eight veteran NFL players have been traded for multiple first-round picks since 2000, but technically no player since Herschel Walker in 1989 has brought back three first-rounders.

It’s reasonable to think the Texans’ asking price for Watson will be astronomical, however, as it’s extremely rare that a player of his caliber becomes available in trade talks, especially a quarterback in today’s pass-happy NFL.

Three first-round picks — or similar value — might be a starting point in negotiations.

“NFL front-office personnel are unanimous in this, with several saying additional draft capital might be necessary,” Fowler wrote in a piece published Wednesday on ESPN.com. “It largely depends where the picks in the first round might fall. Many pointed out that if (Jamal) Adams, (Jalen) Ramsey and (Laremy) Tunsil garnered two firsts, Watson should get far more because of the importance of the quarterback position.”

Watson, the 12th overall pick in 2017, has earned three Pro Bowl selections in his four seasons with the Texans, who posted a 4-12 record in 2020 despite the 25-year-old’s excellent performance.

He’s also under contract through the 2025 campaign after signing an extension with Houston back in September. So, any team that acquires Watson would do so with the understanding that he’s locked up for several years at a reasonable rate for a quarterback of his stature.

Source — Washington Football Team to hire 49ers executive Martin Mayhew as GM

The Washington Football Team is hiring Martin Mayhew as its new general manager, a source told ESPN on Thursday, adding another experienced voice to help coach Ron Rivera.

Mayhew, who most recently was an executive in the Niners front office, interviewed with Rivera on Jan. 16 and had long been considered a strong candidate. Among the other known interviews, Washington also spoke with Ryan Cowden, Tennessee’s vice president of player personnel, Nick Polk, Atlanta’s director of football operations and JoJo Wooden, the Los Angeles Chargers’ director of player personnel.

Mayhew had a longer track record in front offices and also had earned a reputation for knowing how to work with his head coaches. In Washington, Rivera has the power so the general manager will report to him. He and Mayhew share the same agent, but Mayhew also brings a wealth of experience. He served as Detroit’s general manager from 2008 to ’15 — after eight years in the Lions’ front office. Rivera has said he wanted someone who also could handle the administrative duties of the position.

Washington also is expected to hire former Carolina general manager Marty Hurney, though his role was not yet specified, according to a source. Those details were still being worked out Thursday night. ESPN had previously reported that Hurney was expected to become Washington’s GM after he met Monday with Rivera, the main power broker on the football side. Hurney was part of the group that hired Rivera in Carolina; he was fired in 2012 but returned in ’17 for Rivera’s final three seasons. Hurney covered the Washington franchise for the Washington Times in the late 1980s before joining the organization’s public relations group.

Mayhew was named Detroit’s GM late in 2008 after the Lions finished that season 0-16. Detroit was 8-24 in his first two seasons. The Lions made the postseason in 2011 and ’14, the only two years in which they had a winning record during his tenure. Overall, Detroit went 41-63 in his seven-plus seasons.

Mayhew hired Jim Caldwell in 2014 to replace the first coach he had signed, Jim Schwartz. Detroit fired Mayhew midway through the 2015 season. But his hiring of Caldwell paid off: Detroit finished with three winning seasons in Caldwell’s four years with two playoff appearances. It was the first time Detroit had posted consecutive winning seasons since 1994-95.

One person who coached under Mayhew called him “smart, analytical, level-headed” and someone who stayed calm. He was able to have disagreements without it becoming divisive. He also said Mayhew sometimes lacked a gut feel for players, but felt that issue could be lessened if someone else on his staff offered that quality.

Mayhew was the New York Giants’ director of football operations in 2016 before joining San Francisco’s front office a year later. He spent two years as a senior executive and the past two as the vice president of player personnel.

Mayhew played four years as a defensive back in Washington, winning a Super Bowl in the 1991 season. His time in Washington was sandwiched between one season in Buffalo and four in Tampa Bay.
