Assassin’s Creed Nexus for Oculus Quest 2 is the series’ first VR adventure

Updated 4/25: first leaked menu footage added.

What you need to know

  • Assassin’s Creed VR for the Quest 2 will reportedly be called Assassin’s Creed Nexus.
  • Players will reprise the role of several different well-known assassins from the series’ past.
  • The game comprises of 16 full missions with all the gameplay and stealth mechanics you would expect from the series.

It’s been some time since we’ve heard anything about Assassin’s Creed VR, but the first leaks are sounding exactly like what people have hoped. The game is said to be called Assassin’s Creed Nexus and will allow players to literally fill the shoes of famous assassins from the series’ past including Ezio Auditore, Kassandra, Connor, Haytham, and more, according to the leak.

Tom Henderson from Exputer says to have both seen the game himself and been given descriptions of what it’s like to put on a VR headset and play the role of everyone’s favorite assassins in Ubisoft’s long-running franchise. Ubisoft posted job openings for Assassin’s Creed VR back in January and, given its absence from the Meta Quest Gaming Showcase earlier this week, it’s likely the title won’t be released until sometime in 2023 for the Oculus Quest 2 and likely other VR headsets.

As this is an Assassin’s Creed game, the gameplay will consist of running around as stealthily as possible, climbing to your heart’s content, and coming up with unique ways to complete each mission. Players will be able to extend their assassin’s hidden blades by holding a button and flicking their wrist. Proper stealth kills will result in instant elimination, while botched attempts will require players to enter more complex combat scenarios including sword fights.

During the 16 missions, Henderson says the game contains, players are said to be able to explore the world and search for treasures, locked doors, and other hidden areas to find loot and other rewards. You’ll even be able to pick locks, which should lend well to VR’s interaction strengths. This is all, of course, in addition to the main objectives which will most assuredly be filled with clever assassinations, interesting characters, and intriguing plot points across multiple historical settings.

Players will move around either via controller joysticks or standard teleportation, whichever is most comfortable for the player. Since stealth is a big part of the franchise, the developers have ensured that teleportation makes sense from a stealth paradigm. Teleport too close to an enemy and they’ll certainly hear you. Thankfully, if you do make a mistake, you’ll be able to run and hide, or even do a leap of faith off buildings into those infamous hay carts. All in all, it sounds like a shoo-in for one of the best Quest 2 games ever.

Update

UploadVR came across a Reddit post that included what looks like leaked footage of the menu in the game, including mention of a quest called “The Sword of Ezio” which takes place in Italy in 1509. You can find that trailer below.

Skyrim Mod That Makes It Unplayable Removed From Nexus Mods

Image: Bethesda

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a popular game that millions of people are still playing a decade after it was first released. And thanks to mods and user-created content, some have dedicated years of their lives to playing this game. Bethesda’s insistence on re-releasing the iconic RPG likely isn’t helping anyone escape Skyrim’s vice grip, either. So one modder created a way out for those unable to stop playing. The mod, NoSkyrim, makes the Bethesda RPG unplayable once installed.

Made by ThatLittleCommie, that’s literally all the admittedly silly mod does. It doesn’t add extra characters, new weapons, or copyright infringing content like lightsabers or Thomas the Tank Engine. You install it and after that, you can no longer play Skyrim. It just crashes instead. Here’s how the mod’s creator describes the mod.

“Did you ever feel like the game which you spent your hard-earned money on, should be removed and be unplayable, well so did I. Now with NoSkyrim, instead of being able to start a new game like most Skyrim players, you just can’t.”

The mod was originally uploaded to popular modding site Nexus Mods. But it has since been removed for unclear — but probably easy to guess — reasons. I’d bet a mod that simply breaks Skyrim and makes it impossible to play isn’t something the folks running the site want on their mod depository. Kotaku has reached out to Nexus Mods about the removal and if NoSkyrim will ever return.

Currently, if you want to download this silly mod you can find it over at LoversLab.com, which is a uh… more adult modding site. It seems the folks at LoversLab don’t care if a Skyrim mod breaks the game and renders it unplayable.

As spotted by PCGamer, the mod currently has a Change.org petition that folks can sign to support it being readded to Nexus Mods. As of this writing, it has nearly 350 signatures. Meanwhile, a subreddit dedicated to the mod and its return to the Nexus site has also popped up. It has just over 260 members. The top post is a smiling image of Todd Howard, Bethesda’s director, and executive producer. Other posts include people lamenting the mod’s removal as it was the only thing keeping them from playing the decade-old open-world RPG. (These posts are jokes, if you hadn’t figured it out yet.)

For now, it seems NoSkyrim will not return to Nexus Mods. It’s a sad day for folks unable to uninstall a video game or who have no self-control. Meanwhile, Bethesda is still announcing ports of Skyrim in 2021. I wonder if the latest port will work (or cease to work) with the NoSkyrim mod?

Concert ‘a nexus point’ in downtown San Rafael shooting that left 2 dead, 4 injured

A burst of gunfire in downtown San Rafael on Friday night left two dead and four injured, police are reporting.

The San Rafael Police Department says it began receiving multiple 911 calls about shots fired near Third Street at Lootens Place around 10:40 p.m. Police say witnesses reported seeing multiple vehicles speeding away from that location.

A police officer intercepted a black Dodge Charger that eventually stopped near the top of Wolfe Grade. Inside the car were four people, including two men with gunshot wounds: a 25-year-old Fairfield resident whose injuries were life-threatening and 25-year-old Pittsburg resident whose injuries were not.

Back at a parking structure on Lootens Place, police found a 62-year-old San Rafael man with non-fatal gunshot wounds.

Police also found two victims at the scene of a vehicle collision in central Marin. A 24-year-old Stockton man was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 29-year-old Stockton man was transported to a hospital with nonfatal injuries.

Police learned of the second fatal victim after a car dropped the 27-year-old Fairfield man in front of the emergency department at a hospital. Police say the car’s occupants called for help and then drove away. The victim died at the hospital.

Police say they believe many of the victims had come to San Rafael to attend a rap concert at a downtown bar. By Saturday morning, the first floor under the parking garage resembled a crime scene, with bullet holes gouged in load-bearing cement pillars and shattered storefront glass.

Lt. Dan Fink, a spokesperson for the San Rafael Police Department, said the victims that police interviewed said they were either at the concert or on their way to it. Police were not yet ready to identify the venue and had no arrests or updates to report.

“It was a nexus point,” he told The Chronicle.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
