Olivia Newton John, singer and actress, dead at 73

“Dame Olivia Newton-John passed away peacefully at her Ranch in Southern California this morning, surrounded by family and friends. We ask that everyone please respect the family’s privacy during this very difficult time,” her husband, John Easterling, wrote in a statement on the singer’s verified Instagram account. “Olivia has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.”

The singer revealed in September 2018 that she was treating cancer at the base of her spine. It was her third cancer diagnosis, following bouts with breast cancer in the early ’90s and in 2017.

Thanks to a string of country and soft-rock hits, Newton-John was already a popular singer by the late 1970s. But her co-starring role opposite John Travolta in 1978’s “Grease,” arguably the most popular movie musical of all time, lifted her to a new level of stardom.

Although she had little acting experience (and turned 29 during filming), Newton-John gave an indelible performance as Sandy, a sweet-natured Australian transfer student who romances Travolta’s alpha greaser Danny at a Southern California high school in the 1950s.

Their onscreen chemistry as mismatched lovebirds who undergo final-act makeovers to win each others’ hearts — she ditches her frilly dresses for heels, leather, spandex and a cigarette — anchored the movie and inspired repeat viewings by legions of fans.

”I don’t think anyone could have imagined a movie would go on almost 40 years and would still be popular and people would still be talking to me about it all the time and loving it,” Newton-John told CNN in 2017. “It’s just one of those movies. I’m very lucky to have been a part of it. It’s given so many people pleasure.”

Newton-John sang on three of the movie’s biggest hits: the duets “You’re The One That I Want” and “Summer Nights” with Travolta, and her swoony solo ballad, “Hopelessly Devoted To You.”

Born in Cambridge, England in 1948, Newton-John moved with her family to Melbourne, Australia, when she was five. After winning a talent contest on a TV show, “Sing, Sing, Sing,” as a teen she formed an all-girl group and began appearing on weekly pop music programs in Australia.

Newton-John recorded her first single in England in 1966 and scored a few international hits, but she remained largely unknown to US audiences until 1973, when “Let Be There” became a top-10 hit on both the adult contemporary and the country charts.

A series of No. 1 easy-listening hits followed, including “I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow” and “Please Mr. Please.”

Then came “Grease,” which was 1978’s top-grossing movie and became an enduring cultural phenomenon.

The movie gave Newton-John an opportunity to change her squeaky-clean image. The cover of her next album, “Totally Hot,” featured the singer in black leather, while its songs had an edgier, more contemporary pop sound.

Her singing success

In 1981, she took her new, sexier persona a step further with “Physical,” a dance number with such suggestive lyrics as, “There’s nothing left to talk about unless it’s horizontally.” Banned by several radio stations, it became her biggest hit, spending 10 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.

She also appeared in several more big-budget movies, including the musical fantasy “Xanadu” with Hollywood legend Gene Kelly in his final screen role. The film bombed, but its soundtrack sold well and spawned “Magic,” a No. 1 hit.

In 1983 she teamed with Travolta again for “Two of a Kind,” a romantic comedy-fantasy, but it failed to recapture their “Grease” spark.

Over a lengthy career Newton-John won four Grammy Awards and sold more than 100 million albums.

“I’ve had many lives in music. I’ve had country when when I started, then I crossed over into pop,” she told CNN. “I had ‘Xanadu’ and ‘Grease,’ many songs in between. I feel very grateful. I have such a large repertoire to choose from.”

Overcoming tragedy

But Newton-John also faced her share of troubles and tragedy. Her breast cancer diagnoses forced her to postpone and cancel several tours.

And in 2005 Newton-John’s then-boyfriend, Patrick McDermott, disappeared at sea while on a fishing trip off the coast of California. He was never found — an unsolved mystery that haunted the singer for years.

“It’s very hard to live with that,” she told CNN’s Larry King in 2006. “It’s probably the hardest thing I’ve ever experienced, and I’ve been through a lot of things.” Although her career profile dimmed in her later years, Newton-John never stopped recording and performing. Among her highlights were guest appearances on “Glee,” a long-running “Summer Nights” residency at the Flamingo Las Vegas and a dance-club hit, “You Have to Believe,” recorded with daughter Chloe.

”I love to sing, it’s all I know how to do,” she told CNN in 2017. “That’s all I’ve ever done since I was 15, so it’s my life. I feel very grateful that I can still do it and people still come to see me.”

Westworld HBO: First Season 4 Trailer

Screenshot: YouTube

Remember when Westworld season three ended and most fans of the series (including io9) kind of shrugged a big “huh” and moved on to the rest of the hellscape that was 2020? The series hopes to make up for underwhelming you with its fourth season—arriving next month, with a first trailer here today.

Set to the melancholy strains of Lou Reed’s “Perfect Day,” it starts on that Western landscape we knew so well during seasons one and two—though, yes, that sleek, ultra-modern cityscape from season three also gets its due. And if the hints in this trailer are to be believed, might that city be a new Delos Destination in the making?

That trailer doesn’t give us much in the way of plot. But it does give us a crash course in who’ll be returning for more: Thandiwe Newton’s Maeve and Aaron Paul’s Caleb, and it looks like they’ll team up this season. Plus, Luke Hemsworth’s Stubbs; Jeffrey Wright’s Bernard; Tessa Thompson’s Charlotte Hale; Angela Sarafyan’s Clementine; Ed Harris’ William—who is apparently very much back in Man in Black mode; and (surprise! Not really… you knew they’d find a way to bring her back) Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores. Also, what have they done with Maeve’s daughter? The callback to season one, episode one with all the flies is a nice (and also completely terrifying) touch.

Of course, it remains to be seen which version of these people—particularly the ones who aren’t actually people—we’ll really be seeing in season four. Never forget Westworld adores confusing the viewer with flashbacks. Remember season two? If not, now’s a great time to do a rewatch, because Westworld season four hits HBO on June 26.

Salma Hayek Replaces Thandiwe Newton in HBO Max Movie – The Hollywood Reporter

Thandiwe Newton is leaving Magic Mike’s Last Dance, with Salma Hayek taking over her role in the Warner Bros. film. Production had recently begun in London.

“Thandiwe Newton has made the difficult decision to step away from the production of Warner Bros. Pictures’ Magic Mike’s Last Dance to deal with family matters,” a Warners spokesperson said in a statement.

Magic Mike’s Last Dance will be premiering exclusively on HBO Max and will see Channing Tatum return as male stripper Mike Lane, a character loosely based on Tatum’s own experiences as a stripper in Florida. Plot details are not yet known for Last Dance, but the movie is expected to wrap up the Magic Mike story.

The first Magic Mike film grossed $167 million at the box office and was followed by the 2015 sequel, Magic Mike XXL. Both films’ combined global gross nearly reached $300 million. The franchise also spawned a lucrative stage show, Magic Mike Live, which has had runs in Las Vegas, London, Berlin and Australia.

Steven Soderbergh will return to the director’s chair, having stepped away for the 2015 sequel. Reid Carolin, who was behind the screenplays for the first two Magic Mike films, is returning to write.

Newton is currently on screens with Chris Pine in All the Old Knives, and last year appeared in Reminiscence for Warner Bros. and her Westworld co-creator Lisa Joy. Hayek appeared in last year’s Marvel Studios film Eternals and Ridley Scott’s House of Gucci and has a voice role in the upcoming animated feature Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. She is repped by CAA, Management 360 and Laird & Sobel.

Free-agent QB Cam Newton under fire for comments about women who ‘don’t know when to be quiet’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — For the second time in his NFL career, 2015 league MVP Cam Newton is being scrutinized on social media for making a sexist comment regarding women.

The 32-year-old free-agent quarterback, on the “Million Dollaz Worth of Game” podcast released Monday, complained about women who “can’t cook” and “don’t know when to be quiet.”

“Now a woman, for me, is handling your own but knowing how to cater to a man’s needs. Right?” Newton said on the podcast. “And I think a lot of times when you get that aesthetic of like, ‘I’m a boss b—-, I’m this, I’m that.’

“No, baby! But you can’t cook. You don’t know when to be quiet. You don’t know how to allow a man to lead.”

In 2017, as the starting quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, Newton responded about how “funny” it was hearing a female reporter ask a question about a receiver running routes.

“It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes,” he said in response to a question from then-Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue. “It’s funny.”

In a statement at the time, the league said, “The comments are just plain wrong and disrespectful to the exceptional female reporters and all journalists. They do not reflect the thinking of the league.”

Newton later apologized in a two-minute video without addressing Rodrigue by name.

“After careful thought, I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women,” he said at the time. “To be honest, that was not my intentions. And if you are a person who took offense to what I said, I sincerely apologize to you.”

The league did not immediately respond when asked for comments about Newton’s latest quotes.

Newton spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Panthers after being selected with the top pick of the 2011 draft. He spent the 2020 season with the New England Patriots but was cut at the end of the 2021 training camp.

He signed a one-year deal late last season with the Panthers and went 0-5 as the starter. He has not been signed by another team in free agency, but Carolina general manager Scott Fitterer and coach Matt Rhule recently left the door open for his return. A team spokesperson declined to comment Tuesday.

“I love Cam Newton,” Rhule said at the NFL owners meeting in South Florida last month. “He’s an amazing leader. He’s an amazing football player. Everything we do has to be right for the organization, right for him.”

A Review Of All The Old Knives

Thandiwe Netwon and Chris Pine in All The Old Knives
Photo: Prime Video

Chris Pine’s career as Jack Ryan came to an abrupt end after one movie, but much like George Lazenby and James Bond, that might just make him the perfect guy to play knock-offs of other iconic heroes. In All The Old Knives, Pine enters the film sporting perfect hair, an absurdly fashion-forward scarf and a dead-eyed stare, a look that’s more Derek Zoolander than Tom Clancy’s rugged, quick-thinking analyst. But director Janus Metz Pederson wastes little time on the spy world’s Blue Steel before tapping the less superficial qualities that Pine brought to Ryan and James Kirk, even if his role here feels more like a copycat of his better ones.

Most movies set in the “present” use their expected release date as the timeframe. This one’s explicitly set in 2020, its year of production, but it also includes frequent flashbacks to 2012, indicated by conspicuous pictures of Barack Obama on the walls of the CIA offices. In that 2012 “reality” a major Austrian plane hijacking ended with the deaths of everyone on board, and eight years later the case is reopened. Pine’s Henry Pelham is assigned by director Vick Wallinger (Laurence Fishburne) to figure out why it wasn’t solved the first time.

While there’s a possibility of a mole, the stronger likelihood is that Henry’s former coworker and lover Celia (Thandiwe Newton), or at least someone she knows, was the culprit. At a perfect golden-hour dinner meeting in Carmel, a conversation between the two, along with a series of flashbacks, starts to piece together what actually happened. Henry has stationed a hitman outside waiting to take Celia out if doesn’t like what he hears, but Celia, despite her retirement, is smart enough to come prepared with her own back-up.

It seems fitting that Amazon initially became a retail giant based on book sales, and as a studio now cranks out the cinematic equivalent of airport impulse-buy thrillers. A decade or more ago, an adaptation of Olen Steinhauser’s novel All The Old Knives might easily have competed with big-screen versions of John Grisham and Scott Turow bestsellers, but audiences no longer want to pay upwards of $20 per ticket for them—at least not in theaters. Streaming services stepped in to fill the gap, along with companies like Potboiler Productions, whose name couldn’t be more appropriate for developing films like this.

In addition to their intellectual tete-a-tete, Pine and Newton engage in a bedroom showdown as well, a welcome rejoinder to social media grousing about a lack of love scenes in contemporary movies. Then again, the movie is mostly set in 2020, so perhaps it’s included more as an act of nostalgia. Nevertheless, from its celebrity butt shots to Jonathan Pryce’s American accent, All The Old Knives is compelling moment by moment, but afterward viewers may have some lingering questions about what characters hoped to accomplish, or why they were involved at all. Pine and Newton command the audience’s attention, but as CIA analysts they both seem to miss details that would be important for their jobs—though to be fair, it’s easy to get distracted by their mutual hotness.

For better or worse, the film names both Islamic terrorists and (indirectly) Vladimir Putin as the world’s bad guys, and underscores the trouble that ensues when other world powers try to take sides. Nevertheless, All The Old Knives offers enough of a clearinghouse for well-known villains (here come the Chechens!) that it’s likely to feel more like a fun time waster than a measured referendum on geopolitics. Critics inclined to get angry that it takes the CIA mostly for granted might have a point, but this film is also unlikely to stir deeper cultural debate than what to watch on a Friday night after Mom and Dad have put the kids to bed and poured a few glasses of wine. Not to mention, it’s clearly told from the CIA’s point of view, regardless of which character the viewer sides with in the end.

While it’s unlikely that Pine has found himself a new franchise here, the actor’s ability to exude bravado and then to undercut it with vulnerability makes him the perfect casting choice for more not-Jack Ryan projects like this. Maybe he can do it in the next Expendables.

Slim chance Cam Newton is active vs. Cardinals with small package of plays

While the meeting for Thursday was being scheduled, Newton’s agents negotiated the deal with Samir Suleiman, the team’s director of player negotiations and salary cap manager. The original thought was a two-year deal, but with so much invested in Darnold for 2022, it ended up as a one-year deal worth up to $10 million (a base value of $6 million).

Newton wasn’t coming back to play for the minimum, especially with money still coming from the Patriots. And money speaks louder than words, which explains why Newton is making real money. He had previously had some talks with the Seahawks and Texans, but nothing materialized. This was different.

So the meeting was set, and the money was set. Then it was all about what took place inside that meeting.

Tepper was there, as was general manager Scott Fitterer and VP of Football Operations Steven Drummond, who formed a close relationship with Newton during his time in Carolina and whose presence was key. For Newton, it was him and his father.

The divorce wasn’t pretty last time, with Newton taking issue with several facets of it. During the time of COVID-19, when all communication was virtual, plenty of things could have been different. It took plenty of honest and open conversation in Thursday’s meeting.

What did Cam want this time?

The main thing he wants is direct communication and accountability, one source said. If something is wrong he wants to be told directly. In the past when frustrations would occur, staffers or coaches wouldn’t always come to him directly. Newton appreciated the direct communication he received from Bill Belichick in New England and he wanted the same from Rhule.

They promised he would have it.

As for Tepper, he told Newton that this move to sign him was the best football decision for the team at the time. Simple.

As for Darnold, the team is on the hook for $18.858 million next year, fully guaranteed. The Panthers do not plan to give up on him. They liked what he did in the first three games, and they know that part of his play the last few weeks was due to injury. They plan to bring him back, and see what happens.

If Newton plays well enough, next year will be in the conversation, as well. Certainly, the door is open. As of now, there is just excitement. When the Panthers and Newton were driving to the stadium after their Thursday meeting, news had broken about why the meeting took place.

Fans realized who was in the SUVs driving together, and they started going nuts. Honking, yelling, clapping, serenading Newton as he returned. A shot in the arm to the region, is how one person described it.

Of course, Newton ended his introductory press conference like this: “Without further ado, I will say something that I’ve been wanting to say for a long time: Keep Pounding.”

QB Cam Newton ‘still floating’ over return to Carolina Panthers

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Cam Newton had a question for reporters Friday as he drove past them in a golf cart to his first practice in his second stint with the Carolina Panthers.

“Did ya miss me?” the 32-year-old quarterback asked.

The huge smile on Newton’s face and his interview later made it obvious he had missed the Panthers after spending the past year and a half with the New England Patriots following his first nine NFL seasons at Carolina.

“Honestly, I’m still floating,” Newton said in his first comments after rejoining the team on Thursday.

Newton made it clear that any hard feelings there might have been when the Panthers released him after the 2019 season were irrelevant and that the only thing that matters now is “winning.”

“Were there disconnects in the past? It’s irrelevant,” Newton said. “The fact that we’re able to make what may seem a lot of wrongs or some wrongs right, that’s the most exciting thing about it.

“To hell with feelings. It would be the biggest right and wrong by just winning football games.”

Newton on Thursday signed a one-year deal worth up to $10 million for the remainder of the season, including $4.5 million guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus.

“This ain’t for no ploy. This ain’t for no ticket sales. This ain’t for no Cinderella story,” Newton said. “It’s to win football games. That’s pretty much what’s on my heart, and that’s how I’m going about it.”

Newton made it clear the past was the past and has been since he began talking to coach Matt Rhule on Tuesday about a return to the team he led to the Super Bowl in 2015 under then-coach Ron Rivera.

“This wasn’t no apology, ‘Oh, we did you wrong, let’s bring you back,'” Newton said. “… It’s time to win. We’ve got a big game coming up. As far as that goes, it’s a must-win. That’s where all of our energy is.”

The Panthers (4-5), despite losing five of their past six games, are just out of a wild-card playoff spot in the NFC heading into Sunday’s game at Arizona.

PJ Walker will start at quarterback with Sam Darnold, acquired in an offseason trade with the New York Jets, having been placed on injured reserve Friday with a shoulder injury that will take four to six weeks to heal.

Rhule said Newton “looks in great shape” and will make the trip to Arizona. He “doubts” Newton will play Sunday but noted that stance could change after Saturday’s practice.

At best, the Panthers wouldn’t have more than 10 to 12 plays in for Newton.

“It’s always mental that you think you can conquer and do anything, but you actually won’t know until you actually are in that situation,” Newton said of when he might get on the field. “There’s the old saying: Stay ready so you won’t have to get ready. It’s safe to say I’ve been staying pretty ready.”

Newton said accountability, and doing everything Rhule and the staff ask of him whenever called on, is his priority. That process began Friday with Newton spending the early portion of his first practice off to the side with quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan while offensive coordinator Joe Brady worked with Walker and backup Matt Barkley.

Newton likely will get his first start next week against the Washington Football Team coached by Rivera, who made the former Auburn star the top pick of the 2011 draft.

Newton’s goal is to help Carolina get to the playoffs, where the Panthers haven’t been since he led them to an 11-5 record in 2017. He’s more interested in that than in the fan excitement over him returning.

He hasn’t even looked at his phone since he got back.

“My head has been so far into a playbook,” Newton said. “I know the buzz is going on. If you follow me, you know I’m off of social media. So it’s not like I can follow it. That’s a good thing for me now because it would be distracting.

“I just want everybody to know who’s a part of the Panthers Nation, I receive it, but this ain’t no parade. Let’s get to work.”

The 2015 NFL MVP admitted that the past few months, since the Patriots cut him, have been therapeutic. He has spent little time paying attention to what’s going on in the league, focusing on being a “full-time dad, full-time workout fiend.”

He also has spent time fasting and gave a very biblical explanation of why he did that.

“One thing that God was trying to teach Moses through this transition was just have faith, trust me, trust in me,” Newton said. “Everything that your heart desires, that you need, I will give it to you.

“I felt in a lot of ways why I had that off time, I felt like Moses.”

Newton ended the videoconference with an almost drop-the-mike moment before getting up and walking away.

“So without further ado,” Newton said. “I will say something that I’ve been wanting to say for a long time, Keep Pounding.”
