Finland pauses the use of Moderna vaccines in certain age groups.

On Thursday, Finland joined Sweden, Norway and Denmark in pausing the use of Moderna vaccines due to reports of rare cardiovascular side effects found in younger males. The Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare announced males under 30 would be offered the Pfizer vaccine instead, after studies found younger males were at a slightly higher risk of developing heart issues with Moderna.

“An increased risk of side effects such as inflammation of the heart muscle or the pericardium [the double-walled sac containing the heart and the roots of the main vessels]. The risk of being affected is very small,” said Sweden’s Public Health Agency.

All four countries based their decision on an unpublished study with Sweden’s Public Health Agency and although the study suggests risks of being affected are small, the Nordic countries have encouraged using other vaccines for now.

Natural Covid infection produces a stronger secondary immune response than the vaccine, study claims

Are children better protected by natural immunity than vaccination? Natural Covid infections produce a stronger secondary immune response than the vaccine, study claims

  • Natural infection cause the body to produce memory B cells that get stronger
  • The cells evolve and produce antibodies that work against new Covid strains
  • B cells stand ready to produce new antibodies if the body encounters the virus

Natural Covid infection produces a stronger secondary immune response than the vaccine, a study has claimed.

Important components of the body’s immune response called memory B cells continue to evolve and get stronger for at least several months, producing highly potent antibodies that can neutralise new variants of the virus.

By comparison, vaccine-induced memory B cells are less robust, evolving for only a few weeks and never ‘learning’ to protect against variants.

Covid vaccines do induce more antibodies than the immune system does after a coronavirus infection.

But the immune system response to infection appears to outshine its response to vaccines when it comes to memory B cells.

If the effect is replicated in children who are unlikely to develop Covid symptoms, it raises the prospect that they could be better protected by natural immunity than vaccination.

Regardless of whether antibodies are induced by infection or vaccine, their levels drop within six months in many people.

But memory B cells stand ready to produce new antibodies if the body encounters the virus.

Now ministers are set to SCRAP £2,285 hotel quarantine for travellers returning from red list countries

Government ministers are said to be considering scrapping the expensive and controversial hotel quarantine programme.

The news comes amid the travel list of ‘red’ nations being slashed to just seven this week and dwindling numbers of those in mandatory self-isolation testing positive for Covid-19.

Double-vaccinated people arriving in England from 47 new countries, including South Africa, Mexico and Thailand, will no longer be required to spend 11 nights in quarantine at a cost of £2,285 per traveller from Monday.

Foreign Secretary Liz Truss said the decision to lift advice against non-essential travel meant people could ‘exercise personal responsibility’.

Prior to this study, there had been little data on how vaccine-induced B cells compare to infection-induced B cells.

The researchers caution that the benefits of stronger memory B cells after infection do not outweigh the risks that come with Covid.

‘While a natural infection may induce maturation of antibodies with broader activity than a vaccine does, a natural infection can also kill you,’ said study leader Michel Nussenzweig of Rockefeller University, in a statement.

‘A vaccine won’t do that and, in fact, protects against the risk of serious illness or death from infection.’

It comes after a separate study showed the Delta variant does not appear to cause more severe disease in children than earlier forms of the virus.

The researchers lacked information on differences between the groups that might have influenced the results, such as whether lockdowns were in place, and the effects of different seasons.

‘Our data suggest that clinical characteristics of Covid due to the Delta variant in children are broadly similar to Covid due to other variants,’ the researchers concluded.

That appears to jibe with data reported by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

‘Although we are seeing more cases in children … these studies demonstrated that there was not increased disease severity in children,’ CDC Director Dr Rochelle Walensky said of the Delta-driven wave in a statement.

‘More children have Covid because there is more disease in the community.’

Tyson Fury enters WBC heavyweight title fight vs. Deontay Wilder as heavy betting favorite

This time, Tyson Fury is the favorite — and a big one.

Fury is a -280 favorite over Deontay Wilder in their WBC heavyweight title bout, according to Caesars Sportsbook. Wilder is a +230 underdog for Saturday’s fight in Las Vegas (9 p.m. ET, ESPN+ PPV).

It’s the third meeting between the two heavyweights, and the first in which Fury has been the favorite. Wilder was the favorite in the first meeting in 2018, which ended in a split draw, and again in the 2020 rematch that Fury won by TKO in the seventh round.

Entering Saturday, nearly 80% of the money that had been wagered on the fight at Caesars Sportsbook was on Fury, highlighted by a $265,000 bet on the favorite at -265 odds.

The action has varied at other sportsbooks. BetMGM reported Saturday morning that 64.6% of money wagered was on Wilder. The SuperBook said it received a $10,000 bet on Wilder at +250, and Circa Sports also reported taking some early action on the underdog.

“Overall, the action is definitely picking up,” Nick Kalikas, risk supervisor for Circa Sports, told ESPN on Friday. “We did see a lot of straight bets on Wilder earlier. Now, as we’re getting closer to the fight, there is an uptick of action both ways. We did see some sharp action, some max bets on Tyson Fury, as of late.”

At sportsbooks in the United Kingdom — where Fury is from — the betting action was evenly divided, according to OddsChecker.com, a site that tracks betting markets internationally and in the United States.

Costumes galore as New York Comic Con returns to Manhattan after a COVID-induced hiatus

New Yorkers may have noticed a few more costumed characters than usual as the New York Comic Con returned to Manhattan this weekend.

The event’s organizers announced the cancellation of their four-day in-person annual event in 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In its place, a virtual event called ‘New York Comic Con X MCM Comic Con Metaverse’ was on those dates.

The convention returned in 2021 with a requirement that all attendees ages 12 and up to provide proof of full vaccination in order to enter.

Many of the convention-goers were masked both to protect from COVID-19 and because that’s what was required of their colorful costumes, as they cosplayed as various characters throughout film, TV, movies and graphic novels.

Many of the convention-goers were masked both to protect from COVID-19 and because that’s what was required of their colorful costumes, as they cosplayed as various characters throughout film, TV, movies and graphic novels, like these Spidermen (and Spiderwoman)

People got into the spirit of a newly relevant costume, dressing like characters from Netflix’s Squid Game

The convention has drawn as many as 180,000 people over a weekend to New York’s Jacob Javits Center

Celebrities who both create and portray those beloved characters are always a big part of conventions, and the 2021 New York Comic Con is no exception.

Autograph seekers could pay as much as $100 to get signatures from or photos with the likes of William Shatner, Hayden Christensen, David Harbour, John Cena, George Takei, Chace Crawford, Anthony Starr, Jurnee Smollet, Edward James Olmos, Erin Moriarty, Jack Quaid, Kel Mitchell, Daryl ‘DMC’ McDaniels, Jim Ross and Jerry ‘The King’ Lawler.

There were also several panel sessions, including a 40th anniversary retrospective of MTV, a virtual Q&A with the cast of the upcoming reboot of I Know What You Did Last Summer and a panel with the main cast of Amazon’s The Boys.

Amazon’s hit series The Boys had one of the larger panels Friday, as cast members looked back on the show’s first two seasons

The series, which debuted on the streamer in 2019, combines action and comedy and satirizes the larger comic book universes popular in modern movies

Former Gossip Girl star Chace Crawford plays aquatic superhero The Deep on The Boys, which recently wrapped production on its third season

There were also planned meetups available for various fandoms. The Comic Con encouraged hour long sessions for devotees of the likes of Harry Potter, Pokemon, Star Wars, Twilight and Doctor Who.

The convention also features several events centered around the business and hobbying of cosplay.

Attendees can find out how they can do charity work or occasionally volunteer as cosplayers. They can even learn how to turn it into a business at the ‘Business of Cosplay: Professional Development’ session.

The convention not only holds panels for cosplayers but encourages those who dress up from similar fandoms to hold meetup events

Convention-goers often dress up in a different costume for all four days of the convention

Some come dressed as the real thing, like this person showing off as Sonic the Hedgehog, which is awaiting a sequel to the legendary video game character’s hit film

Diversity and inclusion in cosplay were also hot topics at various sessions, including ones that focused on how to incorporate body positivity and disabled access into costumes, or one session that was themed around cosplay and drag.

There are also several events centered around video games, podcasts, Broadway and even wrestling, as several AEW performers are in attendance.

The convention runs through Sunday at Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center.

Several characters came dressed as Harley Quinn, who has featured in three different films in recent years

The costumes ranged from homemade to professional and extremely elaborate

Part of the joy of cosplaying at conventions is the combination of characters from various universes posing for photos, like this one of the Incredible Hulk

Trailer previews new characters, new CG animation style

Toei Animation revealed a new trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, the second anime film in the Dragon Ball Super franchise, during the New York Comic Con event on Thursday. The video previews new characters and a new CG animation style.

The film is scheduled to premiere in 2022 in Japan. The release schedule may differ depending on each country and region. As the name suggests, the film will have a focus on the “superhero” aspect.

Original creator Akira Toriyama is in charge of the screenplay and character design. He was already starting work on the script while the previous film Dragon Ball Super: Broly was still in production.

Planning for the new film project began in 2018, before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The film has a goal of telling “a large-scale story.” Aside from story composition and character design, Toriyama is also writing lines of dialogue for the film.

The film will be the 21st anime film in the overall Dragon Ball franchise.

A High-Salt Diet Could Be Behind Your Sleep Issues, Study Finds

Namely, those mice showed much higher neuronal activity at night compared to the control group, despite the SCN typically showing less activity at this time. As the team notes in their research, “Neuronal excitability at night could lead to decline or mistiming of sleep-wake, hormonal, and physiological rhythms.”

Then, when those mice were given an endothelin B receptor blocker, all that late-night neural activity slowed down. So not only was the salt affecting their circadian rhythm, but the team adds that endothelin B receptor blockers (which are used to promote healthy blood pressure), could also potentially influence the circadian rhythms of people who take them.

Meghan Markle news latest – Prince Harry & Duchess’ expensive taste & lifestyle ‘out of touch’ with ‘target audience’

Buckingham Palace left terrified

THE Royal Family is braced for another devastating attack from Prince Harry — as he personally researches his mother’s life for a new book.

Experts also fear he may use the memoir to name the “royal racist”.

Royal insiders believe he will now be under extreme pressure to identify the family member he alleges made racist remarks about the colour of baby son Archie’s skin.

Harry is understood to have been contacting Princess Diana’s old friends.

It had been thought he would leave most of the work to a ghostwriter.

Now, Palace sources are “surprised” at how involved he has become.

Harry has told how he took wife Meghan and Archie to the US to stop “history repeating itself” — and drew comparisons to Di.

There are concerns his delving into Diana’s life and divorce will paint Prince Charles and Camilla as the bad guys in his book.

Royal expert Penny Junor said: “The publishers are going to want a lot for their money, such as naming this so-called racist.

“He’s researching his mother’s life so he’s going to be talking about his parents’ marriage, the break up, the affairs. That could be incredibly damaging for his father and Camilla. Charles is going to be king and Camilla his queen. The last thing they or the country needs is another upsurge of anger based on what I believe to be false, false accusations.”

Pregnant San Diego Woman Dies from COVID-19 | News

An unvaccinated woman is the first pregnant San Diego woman to die from COVID-19, the County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

The woman died earlier this week after being hospitalized, as did her unborn child. Her age and other details about her death and pregnancy are not being reported to protect her and her family’s privacy.

“This is a very unfortunate death, and our sincere condolences go out to the family and friends of the deceased,” said Seema Shah, M.D., medical director of HHSA’s Epidemiology and Immunization Services branch. “Contracting COVID-19 during pregnancy puts you at greater risk of having serious complications and death. We urge anyone who is pregnant and unvaccinated to get immunized to protect themselves and their babies.”

On Oct. 6, the County Health and Human Services Agency issued a health alert to the local medical community alerting them of an increase in cases and hospitalizations of unvaccinated pregnant women, and encouraging them to urge their patients to get vaccinated.

From June 1, 2021 through Sept. 30, there have been 253 laboratory-confirmed cases among pregnant people, including 203 among those not fully vaccinated compared to 50 who were fully vaccinated. Of the 253, a total of 31 required hospitalization; 30 of those hospitalized were not fully vaccinated.

Not fully vaccinated is defined as being unvaccinated or having received a single dose of Moderna or Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines. Fully vaccinated is defined as being 14-days after the 2nd dose of Pfizer or Moderna COVID-19 vaccines or a single dose of Johnson & Johnson vaccine.

In late September, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued a health advisory strongly recommending that people get vaccinated against COVID-19 either before, during or after pregnancy —including those who are breast-feeding — because the benefits of vaccination outweigh known and potential risks.

According to the CDC, pregnant people who contract and develop symptoms from COVID-19 “have a two-fold risk of admission into intensive care and a 70% increased risk of death.”

“This is heartbreaking and tragic news that a pregnant mother and her unborn baby have died from this terrible disease,” said Dr. Joanna Adamczak, a maternal-fetal specialist and chief medical officer of Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women & Newborns. “We, as health care providers, urgently encourage anyone who is pregnant, or plans to get pregnant, to get the vaccine. It provides important protection for both mom and baby.”

There are over 400 locations where San Diegans can get vaccinated against COVID-19. They include doctors’ offices, retail pharmacies (Rite Aid, Walgreens, CVS, etc.), community clinics and County public health centers.

Nearly 80% of eligible San Diegans are now fully vaccinated. There is plenty of COVID-19 vaccine available in the region for San Diegans who are eligible and due for a booster shot and for San Diegans who have not yet been vaccinated. You can also find a complete list of locations at coronavirus-sd.com.

Russia labels investigative news outlet Bellingcat a ‘foreign agent’ | Russia

Russia has designated the Bellingcat investigative news outlet a “foreign agent” along with nine journalists and three media organisations — hours after a Russian journalist won the 2021 Nobel peace prize.

The designations, which targeted one employee of the BBC’s Russian service, are the latest twist in a crackdown on media outlets that the authorities in Moscow see as hostile and foreign-backed.

The outlets and western governments say the campaign is designed to hamper their work and muffle dissent, something the Kremlin denies.

The foreign agent designation has cold war-era connotations and requires designees to prominently indicate in all their content that they are “foreign agents”, something which hurts advertising revenue. It also imposes burdensome financial reporting requirements.

The Ministry of Justice said in a statement it had added three companies to its foreign agent registry, including Dutch-registered entity Stichting Bellingcat.

Nine individuals were also named, including reporters for the BBC, US broadcaster RFE/RL, Dozhd independent TV, and The New Times, among others.

The two other news outlets labelled as foreign agents were the Kavkazsky Uzel (Caucasian Knot) which covers events in Russia’s volatile North Caucasus region and M.News online publication.

The announcement came the same day as the Nobel peace prize was awarded to Russian newspaper editor Dmitry Muratov along with a journalist from the Philippines, in what the committee called an endorsement of free speech rights in jeopardy around the world.

Bellingcat has angered Moscow for years with investigations into the poisoning of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal and the downing of the MH17 passenger plane over eastern Ukraine.

“What took you so long?” tweeted Christo Grozev, an investigator for Bellingcat.

“Bellingcat has been deemed such a threat to Russia that we’ve been declared a foreign agent,” said Eliot Higgins, Bellingcat’s founder. “I guess this is the Russian Nobel prize?”

San Francisco 49ers rookie QB Trey Lance to make first career start in place of injured Jimmy Garoppolo

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance was thrown into last week’s game at halftime on short notice. This week, there’s no such uncertainty.

Lance will make his first NFL start Sunday against the 4-0 Arizona Cardinals, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday. That announcement comes after a week in which Lance took the reps with the starting offense with starter Jimmy Garoppolo dealing with a strained and bruised right calf.

Garoppolo is listed as out on Friday’s injury report after he did not practice all week. That means it will be Lance starting and veteran Nate Sudfeld expected to get elevated from the practice squad to serve as Lance’s backup.

Lance, who will be 21 years and 154 days old on Sunday, will become the fourth-youngest quarterback at the time of his first NFL start. He will also attempt to become only the second quarterback (joining Phil Simms in 1979) selected in the first round to get his first start against a team that’s 4-0 or better.

While this will be Lance’s first start, he is coming off his first extended playing time. He replaced Garoppolo at halftime of last week’s loss to the Seattle Seahawks, learning he was going into the game just moments before the third quarter began. After some shaky early moments, he settled down a bit in a performance Shanahan said had “some good and some bad.”

Lance finished that game 9-of-18 for 157 yards with two touchdowns and ran seven times for 41 yards. Having the full week of practice with the starters not only allowed Lance to get more comfortable but also gave the 49ers the chance to build out a game plan with more Lance-specific plays.

On Wednesday, Garoppolo was hopeful he’d be able to play against the Cardinals but acknowledged that he’d be “battling through” the calf injury rather than being fully healthy.

That was an important distinction given that Garoppolo attempted to return too quickly from a high ankle sprain in last year’s Week 5 loss to the Miami Dolphins. A clearly hobbled Garoppolo went 7-of-17 for 77 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions before heading to the bench in that 43-17 loss.

This week, Garoppolo is expected to be a pregame inactive, but with the Niners heading toward a Week 6 bye, the team hopes he can be healthy for the Oct. 24 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Garoppolo said Wednesday that while he was hoping to play this week, he was also spending time helping Lance prepare when possible.

“It’s kind of the balancing act,” Garoppolo said. “If Trey has any questions, anything that just I’ve ran in the past or that he hasn’t ran, [I’m] helping him out any way with that.”
