Gabe Newell: Steam Isn’t Interested in Agreements Like Xbox’s Nintendo Call of Duty Deal

Valve appreciates Microsoft’s continued support of the Steam storefront and says that a formal agreement isn’t really necessary for their partnership together.

We’re happy that Microsoft wants to continue using Steam to reach customers with Call of Duty when their Activision acquisition closes,” said Valve CEO Gabe Newell in a statement to Kotaku. “Microsoft has been on Steam for a long time and we take it as a signal that they are happy with gamers reception to that and the work we are doing. Our job is to keep building valuable features for not only Microsoft but all Steam customers and partners.”

Newell explains that Microsoft even sent a draft for a long-term community to keep Call of Duty on the Steam platform but clarifies that there was no need to do so. He says that Valve doesn’t believe in requiring any partner to have a formal agreement that essentially locks them into shipping games on Steam.

Newell also notes that Phil Spencer and the Xbox team have always followed through on their commitments and trust their intentions. Additionally, Newell believes that Microsoft has the motivation to put Call of Duty on platforms and devices that players want to be on.

Just yesterday, Microsoft committed to bringing Call of Duty onto Nintendo platforms for the next 10 years if the Activision-Blizzard merger goes through. Spencer has also said that Microsoft has not made any progress with PlayStation in accepting similar terms.

Microsoft Acquires Activision Blizzard: The Story So Far

Microsoft’s merger with Activision Blizzard merger is currently being reviewed by the FTC and other regulators in Europe and the UK. The deadline to close the deal is July 2023, otherwise, the two parties will have to renegotiate.

Here’s Gabe Newell Hand Delivering Signed Steam Decks in Seattle

Following rumors that Gabe Newell was out hand delivering Steam Deck’s to lucky fans, Valve posted a new video that shows the company’s co-founder hitting the streets.

The reactions range from pleasant, to bewildered, to casually nerdy. One fan chats amiably with Newell about Final Fantasy XIV, which he recently picked up after tiring of World of Warcraft (they even talk about navigating Final Fantasy XIV’s famously full queues).

The video was released following reports on Reddit that Newell was out and about with a camera crew. The original story continues below.

Valve boss Gabe Newell is apparently hand delivering Steam Decks around the Seattle area, where the developer is based.

Reddit users who preordered the tech have claimed that Newell appeared at their door with a signed Steam Deck, and was even giving them away for free. User bitfiddler0 posted a photo of the case with Newell’s signature and the Steam Deck itself, adding that it was free and the highest specs version.

A camera crew was also allegedly accompanying Newell, meaning the deliveries could be part of a promotional stunt for the Steam Deck’s launch.

In a separate post, user SeattleRainPidgeons said he saw Newell delivering a Steam Deck to his neighbour, and when he and his flatmates shouted over to Gabe, he handed them one too.

They said in the post: “After delivering my neighbour’s Deck we yelled ‘Hi Gabe’, at which point he asked how many were living in the house, then he went back to his van and grabbed us each a Deck.”

IGN can’t currently verify that this information is correct but photos posted to Reddit do appear to show Newell delivering the machines. IGN has reached out to Gabe Newell and Valve for comment.

In our review in progress, IGN said “the Steam Deck is a well-built piece of hardware that feels good to hold and play on,” but “on the eve of its official launch, it isn’t the smooth user experience” we had hoped for.

Maryland Judge Jonathan Newell commits suicide as feds moved in for child porn arrest

A Maryland judge fatally shot himself just as federal law enforcement showed up to his home to arrest him on child porn charges Friday morning, authorities said.

Caroline County Circuit Court Judge Jonathan Newell, 50, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound by FBI agents at around 6:43 a.m., according to the Maryland US Attorney’s Office.

The feds were at the judge’s Henderson home to arrest him on a complaint charging him with sexual exploitation of a child for allegedly filming teenage boys in the nude in his hunting cabin, The Baltimore Sun reported.

Neighbors reported that the FBI had arrived just after 6 a.m. demanding Newell come outside with his hands up before they heard a gun shot.

Newell had been on leave since July, after one of several boys that the judge had brought on a hunting trip on Hoopers Island discovered a hidden camera in the bathroom and called his parents, according to court documents obtained by the Sun.

At least two of the boys told investigators that Newell checked them for ticks when they were naked.

“One stated that he moved his own genitalia for Newell to look for ticks, and the other initially did not recall if Newell touched his genitalia, but later stated that Newell once or twice moved the minor’s genitalia to look for ticks,” FBI Special Agent Rachel Corn wrote in the complaint.

Agents raided Newell’s home, truck and law office, and said they found a hard drive in his den that contained numerous videos of naked young men showering. Newell was captured on the footage setting the camera up and in one clip, could be seen searching a naked young man for ticks, the Sun reported.

Newell denied setting up the camera — but investigators said they caught him trying to chew up and swallow a memory card when he was first confronted with the allegations.

“The investigator heard a loud, distinguishable, ‘crunch,’ sound from the area of Newell’s mouth,” the FBI wrote in charging documents.

“After another minute or two, the investigator heard the same ‘crunch’ again from Newell’s mouth, followed by Newell immediately reaching for and drinking from a cup located on his dresser.”

Investigators forced Newell to take a CT scan at a nearby hospital, which revealed a “foreign object” believed to be the missing memory card from the camera.

The federal prosecutors said that Maryland State Police “will lead the investigation into the apparent suicide.”

Newell’s defense attorneys issued a short statement to the Sun, saying: “Our hearts break for Judge Newell’s family, especially for his two sons with whom he was very close.”

Newell had been a judge since 2016 and a leading prosecutor in the county for more than a decade.

Watch Valve’s Gabe Newell explain why the Steam Deck exists

Valve president Gabe Newell has given a rare interview to IGN, where he talks about why the company’s upcoming Steam Deck handheld exists and the philosophy the company had when designing it. The interview is worth a watch to see Newell and developer Pierre-Loup Griffais discuss the motivation behind creating an “open” device (with Newell mentioning that you could hook up an Oculus Quest to it if you wanted), along with what discussions inside Valve led to the system’s development. IGN also has a write-up summarizing the interview if you’d rather read than watch.

Newell also discusses the obvious comparison between the Steam Deck and the Nintendo Switch, saying Valve has chosen different trade-offs when creating its portable gaming system. The interview covers more topics, like the future of work at Valve, Newell’s interest in medical research, and how the company is trying to avoid the stock problems that have plagued consoles like the PS5, Xbox Series X, and Switch. Of course, it wouldn’t be an interview with Gabe Newell if he wasn’t asked a question about Half-Life, which he answers by saying that “[Half-Life: Alyx’s ending] feels like the right progression for where we’re going with Half-Life.”

For those interested in Valve and the Steam Deck, this interview is well worth a watch. To paraphrase Newell talking about the Steam Deck: you’ll know if it’s for you pretty quickly.

Gabe Newell: Pricing Valve’s Switch-Like Steam Deck Was “Painful”

© Valve

In case you missed it, Valve’s rumoured “Switch-like” handheld device has now been officially revealed as the Steam Deck.

While the American company best-known for its digital games platform on PC hasn’t drawn any comparisons to Nintendo’s hybrid system itself, it’s sort of hard to ignore certain similarities and the fact the price point is only $50 more than the recently announced Switch OLED.

During a chat with IGN, Valve’s president Gabe Newell mentioned how crucial it was to find the balance between performance and pricing when designing the Steam Deck. While performance was the top priority, unfortunately, the trade-off was what Newell refers to as a “painful” price point:

“I want to pick this up and say, oh, it all works. It’s all fast. It’s all… and then price point was secondary and painful. But that was pretty clearly a critical aspect to it.”

In a hands-on video, IGN compared the tech inside the system within the “ballpark” of the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 – while showcasing games like Control and Death Stranding running on it. Admittedly it’s light years ahead of the Switch in terms of the kind of games it’ll be able to run, and yet it’s only $50 more than an OLED model.

If Valve gets it right, Newell believes this new device – which the company has described as a “small PC” and can even support windows – could go onto potentially sell millions of units:

“So our view is, if we’re doing this right, then we’re going to be selling these millions of units.”

Just yesterday, Bloomberg released a report claiming Switch OLED upgrades cost Nintendo around $10 more per unit.

What are your own thoughts about the $399 / £349 starting price of the Steam Deck compared to Nintendo’s Switch pricing? Do you think Nintendo has anything to be worried about? Leave your thoughts down below.

Gabe Newell has big plans for brain-computer interfaces in gaming

Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell talks about Valve’s exploration of brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) for gaming and beyond, in an interview with New Zealand’s 1 News. Although Newell admits that the idea of having your brain interface directly with a computer sounds “indistinguishable from science fiction,” he says developers would be making a “silly mistake” if they ignore the area.

Newell says that Valve is currently working with OpenBCI headsets to develop open-source software with the aim of making it easier for developers to understand the signals coming from people’s brains. At its most basic, this could allow software to understand whether a player is enjoying a game, and adjust the experience accordingly. For example, games could turn up the difficulty if they sense a player is getting bored. But Newell’s more ambitious ideas involve actually writing signals to people’s brains, rather than just reading them.

Newell suggests our ability to experience existing games is limited by our physical body — or “meat peripherals” as he puts it. But interfacing directly with a player’s brain could open up a lot more possibilities. “The real world will seem flat, colorless, blurry compared to the experiences you’ll be able to create in people’s brains,” Newell says.

Valve has spoken publicly about its work on brain-computer interfaces before. Back at 2019’s Game Developers Conference, Valve’s principal experimental psychologist, Mike Ambinder gave a talk on the company’s work in the area, VentureBeat reported at the time, covering many of the same possibilities and use cases that Newell outlines in his recent interview.

Beyond their use in gaming, Newell says that BCIs could help with other areas of human life like sleep. “One of the early applications I expect we’ll see is improved sleep — sleep will become an app that you run where you say, ‘Oh, I need this much sleep, I need this much REM,’” he says.

Despite the possibilities, Newell admits that brain-computer interfaces carry their risks. He says that the idea of a BCI making someone feel pain is a “complicated topic,” and adds that the interfaces will be susceptible to viruses like other technologies, suggesting that they’ll need similar safeguards in place.

“Nobody wants to say, ‘Oh, remember Bob? Remember when Bob got hacked by the Russian malware? That sucked — is he still running naked through the forests?’” Newell quips. “People are going to have to have a lot of confidence that these are secure systems that don’t have long-term health risks.”

Regardless, it sounds like Valve doesn’t have any plans to commercialize its research just yet. Newell says that they’re making such rapid progress that any device risks being outdated once it’s gone through the slow process commercialization. “The rate at which we’re learning stuff is so fast,” Newell says.

Other high-profile companies currently exploring brain-computer interfaces include Facebook, which is working on a way to allow users to type with their brains, and Elon Musk’s Neuralink, which is attempting to develop a less-invasive way of connecting a computer to the human brain.

You can check out more of Newell’s thoughts on the potential for brain-computer interfaces in the full write up from 1 News, who he also recently spoke with about Valve’s future game development plans.

It sure sounds like Valve’s Gabe Newell is having a lovely time in New Zealand

Valve co-founder and president Gabe Newell has given one of his famously rare interviews with New Zealand’s 1 News. In it, he discusses his admiration for the island country, where he recently applied for residency after having sheltered there during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also used the interview to confirm that Valve does indeed have new games in development (though he declined to offer more details) and addressed rumors that the company plans to set up an office in New Zealand.

Mostly it just seems like Newell is having an absolutely lovely time living in a country that hasn’t reported any COVID-19 deaths since September last year. He says he’s been attending motorsport races and pursuing an interest in neuroscience, all while Valve employees back in the US have been stuck at home for months on end. Unsurprisingly, although Newell recently denied reports that Valve is actively planning to set up an office in the country, he says there’s been “strong interest” from the company’s employees to relocate.

“There’s a lot of interest at a grass roots level inside of the company to have some people move,” Newell says, adding that New Zealand’s public health infrastructure is now “critically valuable” for a company in the age of a pandemic.

“It’s as if there’s a new element that’s been discovered called ‘not-stupidium’, and New Zealand is one of the world’s producers of it — it’s actually something that’s been built by the people of New Zealand,” Newell says, “It’s absolutely, insanely valuable — like, any high-tech company would say our people are going to be a lot more productive in New Zealand than they are going to be in Ireland or Los Angeles or lots of other places.”

Inevitably, the interview touches on future games for Valve’s Half-Life and Portal franchises. Although Newell declined to offer exact details (“I’ve successfully not spoken about those things for a long time and I hope to continue to not talk about them until they are moot questions.”), he did confirm that the company has games in development. “It’s fun to ship games,” he said.

It might not be much, but it’s reassuring that a studio with such an enviable back catalog of titles still has plans to release more games in the future — not least because Valve acquired Firewatch developer Campo Santo in 2018, after it teased its impressive-looking follow-up, In the Valley of Gods. Last year, Valve made its long-awaited return to single-player games with the excellent VR-exclusive Half-Life: Alyx, with some employees reporting that its development had got the studio’s “excitement and creative juices flowing” to release more games.

You can check out the full interview on 1 News.
