NFL Divisional Playoff Predictions: Titans, Packers, Buccaneers and Chiefs? Who will progress to the Conference Championships? | NFL News

The opening round of the NFL playoffs followed much the same pattern of the regular season, with some thrilling football played out over Super Wild Card Weekend – and Neil Reynolds again getting the better of Jeff Reinebold with his predictions…

As well as hosting Inside The Huddle on Sky Sports NFL every Tuesday at 9pm, Neil and Jeff release a weekly audio edition of ITH every Wednesday in which they make their game picks.

Neil emerged victorious (175-168) in the regular season, and Neil opened the playoffs with a further two-point swing in his favour as he correctly called wins for the San Francisco 49ers, on the road against the Dallas Cowboys, and for the Los Angeles Rams over the Arizona Cardinals on Monday night. Can Jeff play for some pride and get a win this weekend?

NEIL PICKS: Titans

“This one is tricky. Initially I fancied Cincinnati to beat Tennessee… but only one team gets a bye, and the Bengals are quite banged up now on their defensive line – Larry Ogunjobi we know is out with a foot injury, he’s on injured reserve, and Trey Hendrickson has a concussion.

“I do still think the Bengals will make this a really competitive game – Joe Burrow is in red-hot form, with 1,215 yards, 10 touchdowns and zero picks in his last three outings – but I’m actually going to flip my pick, and probably annoy myself if Cincinnati now win. I’m taking the Titans.”

JEFF PICKS: Titans

“A team like Cincinnati is rebuilding, and the way the league is structured – with a salary cap and draft choices – the hardest thing to acquire is depth, because that takes time.

“So when you lose a guy like Ogunjobi, or Hendrickson, the drop off to the next guy can be really steep. That’s my concern for the Bengals, so I’m taking Tennessee too.

“I am a huge Burrow fan, but this is his first venture into this water, Ja’Marr Chase too, and the head coach Zac Taylor. With every game up the chain in the playoffs, the attention, the pressure, the importance all ratchets up. The Titans just have more experience of these kind of moments.”

San Francisco 49ers @ Green Bay Packers

NEIL PICKS: Packers

“This is going to be an absolute cracker at Lambeau Field.

“The 49ers have a run game that is very diverse and exciting to watch. That helps when it comes to travelling on the road, as we saw last week when they went into Dallas – I picked them to win – and beat the Cowboys. I absolutely love watching Deebo Samuel. They’ll be very confident.

“But I think Green Bay can run the ball as well and, if it’s a close game, I’m riding with Aaron Rodgers over Jimmy Garoppolo all day long and twice on Sundays. Packers for me.”

JEFF PICKS: Packers

“This is going to be a great football game, played out in the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. Even the uniforms in this game, they conjure up great memories of NFL playoff history – its so awesome!

“I’m not sold yet on how the Niners handle the pressure moments of big games. Everything goes through the quarterback, and that is amplified even more in the playoffs; if all other things are equal, who do you want, Rodgers or Garoppolo? I’m taking Green Bay.”

Los Angeles Rams @ Tampa Bay Buccaneers

NEIL PICKS: Buccaneers

“This is another one where if you’d have asked me at the start of the playoffs, I’d have had the Bucs advancing.

“But, this becomes a much tougher proposition now for Tampa Bay if Tristan Wirfs – their All-Pro right tackle – is not playing in this game with an ankle injury. Ryan Jensen, their center, also was banged up, although he went back into the game last week. Wirfs, according to head coach Bruce Arians, is a game-time decision, it’s going to go right down to the wire. And, suddenly, here come Aaron Donald, Von Miller and Leonard Floyd on the Rams defensive line.

“I am going to continue to ride the Tampa Bay train and still pick the Bucs, but this becomes a much, much tougher game.”

JEFF PICKS: Rams

“Football is a game of matchups. It’s such a strategic game. And with the Rams, you’ve got Cooper Kupp and Tyler Higbee who are really good against zone coverage. But then there’s Odell Beckham Jr. and his unique set of skills, which is particularly effective when it’s one-on-one, him versus another athlete.

“The Rams build formations to ensure they isolate your player against their player, OBJ. That presents so many challenges. It’s a fascinating chess match.

“I was down on the Rams defense after they melted down against San Francisco a couple of weeks ago, but I was so impressed by them against the Cardinals. If Wirfs doesn’t play, Tom Brady should watch out!”

Buffalo Bills @ Kansas City Chiefs

NEIL PICKS: Bills

“This one is mouth-watering. Both teams went on incredible offensive tears in their Wild Card wins last week.

“My overriding felling on this game is that I’m just going to be sad to have to wave goodbye to one of them – one of these quality teams is heading out of the playoffs on Sunday night.

“In the summer, I picked Buffalo to win the Super Bowl, but at the start of the playoffs, I picked the Chiefs to go to the Super Bowl – so I don’t know where to go here, I’m stuck.

“Both teams are pretty unstoppable on offense, but I think Buffalo have the better defense – that was the case when they played in Arrowhead earlier in the season – so I’m flip-flopping again and going back to Buffalo to win this one.”

JEFF PICKS: Bills

“The Bills are uniquely built not to beat the New England Patriots, not the New York Jets or the Miami Dolphins in their division. They’ve been built to beat the best in the AFC, and that’s the Chiefs.

“I’m going to take the Bills to win on the road in Kansas City.”

Orange County offshore oil sheen likely related to repair work on damaged line, not a new spill, officials say

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) — An oil sheen reported on the water off Orange County on Saturday near the location of an earlier spill was likely a result of repair work being done in the area and not a new spill – and was not visible later in the day, officials said.

The U.S. Coast Guard said by Saturday afternoon it did not observe the sheen that was reported earlier in the day, according to updates from local elected officials.

Earlier Saturday, authorities were investigating a report of an oil sheen measuring about 30 feet by 70 feet on the water in the area where crews continue to make repairs to a damaged pipeline that resulted in an oil leak of some 25,000 gallons in early October.

The observation sparked concerns about a new spill in the area.

By later in the afternoon, authorities said the sheen was likely related to the repair work and not an indication of a fresh leak.

“We are expecting another flash alert later this afternoon, but initial observations from @uscoastguard & @CaliforniaDFW are not seeing signs of an oil spill,” state Sen. Dave Min tweeted. “Possible that the first sheen was related to remedial work being done on the damaged pipeline.”

Orange County Supervisor Katrina Foley says the initial sheen was reported by crews approaching the pipeline for scheduled repair work.

Divers then observed oil droplets on the syntho-glass wrap covering the damaged line, Foley said. They removed the old wrap and installed a new one. As of 2 p.m. no sheen has been observed in the area, she said.

The pipeline itself has remained shut down since the initial spill on Oct. 2.

Authorities are still investigating to see if the sheen is related to the droplets found on the wrap.

Early last month, a pipeline owned by Houston-based Amplify Energy leaked at least about 25,000 gallons of crude oil into the ocean off the coast of Orange County. Blobs of oil washed ashore, oiling birds and shuttering the famed shoreline of Huntington Beach for a week.

Environmentalists braced for the worst but the damage has been less than initially feared. Much of the oil broke up at sea and local officials put up booms to keep the crude out of sensitive wetlands.
The cause of that spill is under investigation, but federal officials have said the pipeline was likely initially damaged by a ship’s anchor.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Researchers explain newest mutation of COVID-19 virus, how to prevent future mutations

The EVT Viral Genomics and Sequencing Lab at LSU Health Shreveport says it is the first in the state to sequence and report that a new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19, has been detected in Louisiana.

The new variant, B.1.630, was sequenced last week from two samples collected in Baton Rouge.

We spoke to Dr. Krista Queen from Shreveport, who does the sequencing to identify these mutations. The mutation this time around is found on the spike protein, which is what your body uses to detect it’s in danger and fight.

“And that helps it evade the host immune response,” Dr. Queen said. “Vaccines are still going to be effective against this variant, and this variant is no cause for concern at this point. We’ve only detected it in a few samples, but these are the things that scientists behind the scenes are always watching and looking out for.”

Although only 79 samples of this mutation have been found in the United States, Dr. Queen says they’re closely monitoring it.

“It’s important right now while Delta is still so prevalent, that we keep an eye on anything that’s not Delta,” she said. “That way we can start to see if those are going to increase in abundance or if there are any changes that happen that we might need to be aware of.”

She says these mutations are completely natural and normal behavior from the virus as it tries to infect others.

“The virus, when it’s copying its genome to make new copies, to infect other people, it will mutate or change part of its genome, part of its sequence, that’s what gives rise to these variants,” she said.

While natural, Dr. Amanda Logue from Ochsner Lafayette General says when there are surges, like the one the state just witnessed, there’s more room for mutation.

“So there’s tons of virus floating around at that time, throughout all of the community,” said Dr. Logue. “And so every time the virus replicates, there’s a chance for it to mutate. So there are some thoughts that when that replication gets going so strongly, that mutations happen, and they happen naturally all the time in viruses.”

Both Dr. Logue and Dr. Queen agree – vaccination is the best way to keep these mutations from happening.

“The vaccine can stop the virus from spreading, it stops those future infections by lowering the virus’s ability to replicate within us, then we reduce those chances of mutation,” said Dr. Queen. “Absolutely.”

According to a release, the B.1.630 variant was first detected in the United States earlier in March of 2021. It does not have variant classification or a Greek alphabet name like the Delta variant because such a small proportion of samples have been sequenced.

“Thanks to our many partnerships across the state, our EVT Viral Genomics and Sequencing Lab is able to sequence a large variety of samples which increases our chances of finding new variants. Genomic sequencing and the data this science provides is important to continuing our mission of public health surveillance so we can help best protect citizens of Louisiana throughout the duration of this pandemic,” said Dr. Chris Kevil, Vice Chancellor for Research at LSU Health Shreveport.

LSU Health Shreveport says the variant does contain the E484Q mutation, which may help the virus escape the host immune system and lead to infection.

There have only been 79 of these variants sequenced in the U.S., researchers say. The predominance is very low.

“Even though the predominance of this variant is low, we will continue to keep an eye on it and watch for any changes or if it starts to increase,” said Dr. Krista Queen, Director of Viral Genomics and Surveillance for the Center of Excellence for Emerging Viral Threats at LSUHS. “Any lineage or sub-lineage of SARS-CoV-2 with this E484Q mutation is watched because of the possibility of immune evasion. Some of the variants that do not have other mutations that increase transmissibility will eventually die out, but it is important to monitor any changes in abundance.”

While viruses that contain this mutation may be able to escape the immune response and resist antibodies, researchers say vaccination remains the best tool to prevent transmission and severe illness.

Mutations in viruses are not uncommon.

According to LSU Health Shreveport, RNA viruses, like the virus that cause COVID-19, are more prone to mutation because of their method of copying their genome. Vaccination does not prevent the virus from mutating; however, the virus does not get the opportunity to mutate in the case of infections prevented by vaccination. The higher the percentage of the population that is vaccinated, the fewer chances the virus gets to mutate into new lineages that could be potentially more transmissible or more harmful lineages.

LSU Health Shreveport says that, to date, the EVT Viral Genomics and Sequencing Lab has completed genome sequencing for more than 7,000 COVID-19 test samples and is the top submitter in the state of Louisiana to the global GISAID database. LSUHS scientists are still seeing the B.1.617.2 (Delta) SARS-CoV-2 variant as the most prevalent in North Louisiana.
