Peloton (PTON) Q2 earnings 2023

Peloton said Wednesday its net loss narrowed year over year, and, for the third quarter in a row, subscriptions revenue was higher than sales of the company’s connected fitness products.

CEO Barry McCarthy called the results a possible “turning point” for the business, which has spent much of the past year executing an aggressive turnaround strategy. 

The fitness equipment company’s fiscal second quarter revenue beat Wall Street’s expectations, but the company posted wider losses per share than expected. Peloton’s stock jumped about 7% in premarket trading.

Here’s how Peloton did in the three months that ended Dec. 31 compared with what Wall Street was anticipating, based on a survey of analysts by Refinitiv:

  • Loss per share: 98 cents vs. 64 cents expected
  • Revenue: $792.7 million vs. $710 million expected

The company’s reported net loss for the three-month period that ended Dec. 31 was $335.4 million, or 98 cents per share, compared with a loss of $439.4 million, or $1.39 per share, a year earlier. While it’s the eighth quarter in a row the exercise company has reported losses, it’s the narrowest loss Peloton has marked since its 2021 fiscal fourth quarter. 

Revenue dropped 30% compared to the year ago period but exceeded the company’s expected range of $700 to $725 million. Connected fitness product sales, which are typically strong during Peloton’s holiday quarter, dropped 52% year-over-year while subscription revenue jumped 22%. 

“This is the time of year when, if we’re going to sell a lot of hardware, we have so you would expect there to be lots of hardware related revenue, and you would expect that maybe that revenue would exceed subscription,” McCarthy told CNBC. “It didn’t. It’s why in the letter [to investors], I call it out, as it may be a turning point.”

In his letter to investors, McCarthy said he expects the trend to continue. 

The company ended the quarter with 6.7 million total members and 3.03 million connected fitness subscriptions, which is a 10% jump compared to the year ago period. The company counted 852,000 subscribers to its app, a 1% drop compared to the year ago period. It has a goal of getting 1 million people to sign up for trials of its app over the next year.

Peloton is losing money on Bikes, Treads and other machines, but its subscription business has once again kept its overall margins above water. Gross margins for its connected fitness products were negative 11.2%, but gross margins for subscription sales were 67.6%. The total gross margin was 29.7%, up from 24.8% in the year ago period. It declined from the previous quarter, however, driven in part by increased promotions in the holiday quarter.

Peloton expects revenue to be lower but margins higher in the next quarter. The company is forecasting sales between $690 million to $715 million and a total gross margin of about 39%. Wall Street analysts pegged their revenue estimate for the quarter at $692.1 million.

The company is also expecting connected fitness subscribers to be between 3.08 million and 3.09 million. 

Next phase of the turnaround

Peloton, which boomed during the earlier days of the pandemic, has been in the midst of a broad turnaround strategy under McCarthy, who took the helm of the business a year ago. 

The company’s stock is up about 62% so far this year, closing at $12.93 on Tuesday, giving it a market value of about $4.4 billion. Shares are well off their 52-week high of $40.35, which they hit around the time McCarthy became CEO.

“The viability of the business was very much in doubt when I walked in,” said McCarthy, a former Spotify and Netflix executive. “It probably wouldn’t be an overstatement to say there were some people who didn’t expect us to survive this long.”

Since he took over, McCarthy has cut Peloton’s workforce by more than half, expanded its Bike rental program nationwide, started selling certified pre-owned Bikes, debuted a rowing machine and partnered with Amazon and Dick’s Sporting Goods to sell its Bikes and Treads. 

McCarthy’s top priority was to manage cash flow and get the company out of the red, a goal he said the company has nearly accomplished. Free cash flow was negative $94.4 million, compared with negative $246.3 million in the previous quarter and negative $546.7 million in the year-ago period. 

McCarthy said he’s ready to pivot from trying to keep the company alive to growing it, he told CNBC. 

“Now that we’ve addressed the viability issues, let’s get back to thinking about growth and the future of the business, like full stop,” said McCarthy. 

“So there are a bunch of initiatives that we’ve announced that position us to pursue growth,” he added. “And the question we need to answer for investors now that we’re not talking about viability is how fast, how profitable, where’s it coming from, and over time we’ll begin to address some of those questions.”

Showtime to combine with Paramount+, rebrand with new name

Paramount Global is further joining its streaming and cable TV business by combining its Showtime TV network and streaming service, Paramount+.

The company said Monday it plans to integrate Showtime’s streaming service fully into Paramount+, its marquee standalone streaming platform and response to the streaming wars.

But the union doesn’t stop there. As part of this integration, the premium cable TV network, known for shows like “Yellowjackets,” “Billions,” and “Dexter,” will be rebranded as Paramount+ with Showtime. The TV channel will also feature content from Paramount+, which has produced original series that spun off from the popular “Yellowstone” and “Criminal Minds” franchises. People can subscribe to Showtime for an extra fee on their pay-TV bundle,

Pricing for the combined streaming platform and other details will be announced in coming weeks, a Paramount spokesperson said Monday. Paramount+ starts at $4.99 a month, and Showtime’s streaming service is $10.99 a month. A bundled offering of the two already exists, beginning at $11.99 a month.

In November, Paramount reported that Paramount+ had 46 million customers. The company reports fourth quarter earnings Feb. 16.

The move comes as media companies work to make their streaming businesses profitable. Competition is at an all-time high following a pandemic-fueled streaming boom, slowing the addition of subscribers. Stock prices have suffered, in part, due to this, and these companies have been experimenting to grow their streaming businesses.

Last year Netflix introduced a cheaper, ad-supported tier. While Disney was early to bundling its streaming options – Disney+, Hulu and ESPN+ – it also debuted an ad-supported option and increased prices last year. Warner Bros. Discovery has been pulling back on content for its HBO Max, as it looks to cut costs, and also plans to debut a combined HBO Max and Discovery streaming app in the spring.

“This new combined offering demonstrates how we can leverage our entire collection of content to drive deeper connections with consumers and greater value for our distribution partners,” Paramount CEO Bob Bakish said in a memo to employees Monday.

During the fall, Paramount restructured its Showtime business. Executive David Nevins, who’d been running the network since 2016, departed and Chris McCarthy and Tom Ryan took over. McCarthy also runs Paramount’s cable-TV networks like MTV and Comedy Central. Ryan runs Paramount’s streaming segment.

While McCarthy and Ryan will remain in place, Bakish acknowledged that the integration “brings uncertainty to the teams” that work on each brand.

Stock futures rise after Dow goes negative for the year

Stock futures ticked higher early Friday morning as investors tried to hang onto the January rally amid worries about monetary policy and slowing earnings.

Futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 45 points, or 0.14%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 futures gained 0.24% and 0.43%, respectively. Nordstrom slipped more than 5% in after hours trading after reporting weak holiday sales and cutting its year-end forecast. Netflix jumped 7% after reporting more subscribers than expected even though its quarterly earnings missed analysts’ estimates.

During Thursday’s session, the Dow and the S&P 500 both closed lower to hit their third negative days in a row as corporate earnings and economic data signal a slowing economy. The Dow slipped more than 252 points, or 0.76% and is now down 0.31% year to date. The S&P 500 shed 0.76% and the Nasdaq Composite lost 0.96%, but both indexes are positive for the year.

For the week, however, all three indexes are on track to close lower. The Dow is down 3.67%, on track for its worst week since September. The S&P 500 is down more than 2.5% and could notch its worst weekly performance since December. The Nasdaq is down more than 2% and on pace to break a two-week win streak.

“The market is focused and is not sure how to react between the backward looking Fed analysis of the market versus the forward and leading indicators of the market,” said Tim Seymour, founder and chief investment officer of Seymour Asset Management, on CNBC’s “Fast Money.”

Those forward indicators include economic data such as retail sales and industrial production. “This is where the market is starting to break down,” he said.

Going forward, investors will continue to watch corporate earnings with oilfield services name SLB and Ally Financial set to report Friday. They will also listen closely to speeches from Fed officials ahead of the central bank’s February meeting, seeking clues on the size of the rate hike that’s likely forthcoming.

Wait before trading on company earnings

CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Friday warned investors not to make trading decisions fresh off a company’s earnings report.

Stocks made a comeback on Friday after falling initially on quarterly earnings reports and recession warnings from major banks. All three major indexes ended the week up, as investors digested a slate of earnings reports and economic data that suggested inflation is cooling. 

Cramer, who earlier this week offered investors a set of guidelines for earnings season, called Friday’s trading session an example of why investors should be disciplined with their portfolios.

“Every quarter I make the same argument about how you should wait and do more work before you pull the trigger, but a lot of people remain unconvinced,” he said.

He also went over next week’s slate of quarterly reports. All estimates for earnings, revenue and economic data are courtesy of FactSet.

Tuesday: Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, United Airlines

Goldman Sachs

  • Q4 2022 earnings release at 7:30 a.m. ET; conference call at 9:30 a.m. ET
  • Projected EPS: $5.56
  • Projected revenue: $10.76 billion

The company’s stock could soar higher if the earnings report beats expectations, he said.

Morgan Stanley

Cramer said he expects a “terrific” report from the bank.

The company will put up great numbers, since consumers are still spending on travel, he predicted.

He said he expects the company to report a solid quarter as raw costs come down and foreign exchange headwinds abated.

  • Projected revenue: $7.84 billion

“I think Netflix could be one of the strongest stories out there,” he said.

Friday: SLB

  • Projected EPS: 68 cents
  • Projected revenue: $7.78 billion

“SLB will tell us where the new finds are. They will play with an open hand. I bet you they give you a little update on Russia, too,” he said.

AEW has interest in merging with WWE

All Elite Wrestling, a professional wrestling league owned by the Khan family, is interested in merging with World Wrestling Entertainment, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Khans, who also own the National Football League’s Jacksonville Jaguars and the Premier League’s Fulham F.C., could partner with a strategic media company to share the intellectual property while merging the wrestling leagues, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions are private. AEW has a TV carriage rights agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery‘s TNT and TBS.

The idea that Vince McMahon, the controlling shareholder of WWE, would merge his company with the much smaller AEW is a long shot. AEW hasn’t had talks with McMahon or Nick Khan, the company’s chief executive, said the people. McMahon may view selling to the Khans as a non-starter.

The Khans are open to discussing a potential role for McMahon, 77, after a sale but haven’t yet had those talks, one of the people said. It’s unclear what type of job McMahon would want with WWE after a sale, but WWE is a much larger and more established organization than AEW. McMahon, who was worth more than $3 billion as of July, is also known as the primary creative force behind WWE’s storylines.

Sports tycoon Shahid Khan, 72, is ranked 292 on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index with a net worth of $7.56 billion. He also owns auto parts manufacturer Flex-N-Gate.

S&P 500 closes out dismal year with worst loss since 2008

Wall Street capped a quiet day of trading with more losses Friday, as it closed the book on the worst year for the S&P 500 since 2008.

The benchmark index finished with a loss of 19.4% for 2022, or 18.1%, including dividends. It’s just its third annual decline since the financial crisis 14 years ago and a painful reversal for investors after the S&P 500 notched a gain of nearly 27% in 2021. All told, the index lost $8.2 trillion in value, according to S&P Dow Jones Indices.

The Nasdaq composite, with a heavy component of technology stocks, racked up an even bigger loss of 33.1%.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average, meanwhile, posted an 8.8% loss for 2022.

Stocks struggled all year as inflation put increasing pressure on consumers and raised concerns about economies slipping into recession. Central banks raised interest rates to fight high prices. The Federal Reserve’s aggressive rate hikes remain a major focus for investors as the central bank walks a thin line between raising rates enough to cool inflation, but not so much that they stall the U.S. economy into a recession.

The Fed’s key lending rate stood at a range of 0% to 0.25% at the beginning of 2022 and will close the year at a range of 4.25% to 4.5% after seven increases. The U.S. central bank forecasts that will reach a range of 5% to 5.25% by the end of 2023. Its forecast doesn’t call for a rate cut before 2024.

Rising interest rates prompted investors to sell the high-priced shares of technology giants such as Apple and Microsoft as well as other companies that flourished as the economy recovered from the pandemic. Amazon and Netflix lost roughly 50% of their market value. Tesla and Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, each dropped more than 60%, their biggest-ever annual declines.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine worsened inflationary pressure earlier in the year by making oil, gas and food commodity prices even more volatile amid existing supply chain issues. Oil closed Friday around $80, about $5 higher than where it started the year. But in between oil jumped above $120, helping energy stocks post the only gain among the 11 sectors in the S&P 500, up 59%.

China spent most of the year imposing strict COVID-19 policies ,which crimped production for raw materials and goods, but is now in the process of removing travel and other restrictions. It’s uncertain at this point what impact China’s reopening will have on the global economy.

The Fed’s battle against inflation, though, will likely remain the overarching concern on Wall Street in 2023, according to analysts. Investors will continue searching for a better sense of whether inflation is easing fast enough to take pressure off of consumers and the Fed.

If inflation continues to show signs of easing, and the Fed reins in its rate-hiking campaign, that could pave the way for a rebound for stocks in 2023, said Jay Hatfield, CEO of Infrastructure Capital Advisors.

“The Fed has been the overhang on this market, really since November of last year, so if the Fed pauses and we don’t have a major recession, we think that sets us up for a rally,” he said.

There was scant corporate or economic news for Wall Street to review Friday. That, plus the holiday shortened week, set the stage for mostly light trading.

The S&P 500 fell 9.78 points, or 0.3%, to finish at 3,839.50. The index posted a 5.9% loss for the month of December.

The Dow dropped 73.55 points, or 0.2%, to close at 33,147.25. The Nasdaq slipped 11.61 points, or 0.1%, to 10,466.48.

Tesla rose 1.1%, as it continued to stabilize after steep losses earlier in the week. The electric vehicle maker’s stock plummeted 65% in 2022, erasing about $700 billion of market value.

Southwest Airlines rose 0.9% as its operations returned to relative normalcy following massive cancellations over the holiday period. The stock still ended down 6.7% for the week.

Small company stocks also fell Friday. The Russell 2000 shed 5 points, or 0.3%, to close at 1,761.25.

Bond yields mostly rose. The yield on the 10-Year Treasury, which influences mortgage rates, rose to 3.88% from 3.82% late Thursday. Although bonds typically fair well when stocks slump, 2022 turned out to be one of the worst years for the bond market in history, thanks to the Fed’s rapid rate increases and inflation.

Several big updates on the employment market are on tap for the first week of 2023. It has been a particularly strong area of the economy and has helped create a bulwark against a recession. That has made the Fed’s job more difficult, though, because strong employment and wages mean it may have to remain aggressive to keep fighting inflation. That, in turn, raises the risk of slowing the economy too much and bringing on a recession.

The Fed will release minutes from its latest policy meeting on Wednesday, potentially giving investors more insight into its next moves.

The government will also release its November report on job openings Wednesday. That will be followed by a weekly update on unemployment on Thursday. The closely-watched monthly employment report is due Friday.

Wall Street is also waiting on the latest round of corporate earnings reports, which will start flowing in around the middle of January. Companies have been warning investors that inflation will likely crimp their profits and revenue in 2023. That’s after spending most of 2022 raising prices on everything from food to clothing in an effort to offset inflation, though many companies went further and actually padded their profit margins.

Companies in the S&P 500 are expected to broadly report a 3.5% drop in earnings during the fourth quarter, according to FactSet. Analysts expect earnings to then remain roughly flat through the first half of 2023.

U.S. stock markets will be closed Monday in observance of the New Year’s Day holiday.

Lululemon — Shares of Lululemon fell 12% after the athletic apparel company gave a weaker-than-expected fourth-quarter outlook. In the third quarter, the company beat Wall Street’s expectations on the top and bottom lines.

Beyond Meat — Beyond Meat’s stock dropped more than 8% after being downgraded by Argus to sell from hold. The firm’s analyst cited falling demand amid weaker economic conditions.

Broadcom — Broadcom gained 3.1% after giving an upbeat revenue forecast and reporting better-than-expected quarterly results after the bell Thursday. The chipmaker also increased its dividend by 12.2% and said it would resume stock buybacks.

Tesla — Tesla’s stock was up more than 4%, paring some of the losses it suffered this week. Reuters reported on Friday the electric-vehicle maker will suspend Model Y assembly at its Shanghai plant between Dec. 25 and Jan. 1. Inventory levels at the plant had risen sharply over the summer.

Carvana — Shares of Carvana rose 2% after lenders told The Wall Street Journal that they don’t anticipate the online car seller will file for bankruptcy soon. These debtholders are joining together amid reports earlier this week that the company is looking to restructure its debt, the paper said. Carvana had seen success during the pandemic, but rising interest rates and weaker car demand have hurt its performance.

Netflix — Netflix gained 5% after being named a “best idea” for 2023 by Cowen and being upgraded by Wells Fargo to overweight from equal weight. Cowen said it sees free-cash flow ramping up next year, while Wells Fargo said content growth would lessen customer churn.

RH — RH, formerly known as Restoration Hardware, rose 4.5% after reporting third-quarter earnings-per-share and revenue that beat expectations. However, the retailer also said it expected business trends to deteriorate.

Coinbase — Shares of the crypto services firm fell 2.6% after Mizuho downgraded Coinbase and said its price could fall another 30%. Crypto equities such as Coinbase have been under pressure with cryptocurrency prices, as investors digest the macro picture and the latest developments on FTX.

DocuSign — Shares of DocuSign jumped 16% after the electronic signature company posted upbeat quarterly results. It also reported better-than-expected billings, subscription renewals and additional sales to existing customers.

Costco — The wholesaler gained 1.6% after Cowen named the stock a “best idea” heading into 2023, noting the company’s focus on value could be a winning strategy as consumers get more price conscious.

AmerisourceBergen — AmerisourceBergen fell 2.7% after Walgreens sold about $1 billion shares of the drug distributor. Walgreens remains its largest shareholder, with its stake now down to 17% from 20%.

Vale — The Brazil-based mining company gained 3.5% after Morgan Stanley upgraded the stock to overweight from equal weight, citing a “cocktail” of positive catalysts such as price momentum for iron ore and China exiting its Covid-zero policy.

Bath & Body Works — Shares of Bath & Body Works gained rose 2.1% after activist investor Dan Loeb boosted his stake in the retailer. Loeb said he might push for board charge to improve governance issues at the company.

Walmart — Shares of retailer Walmart jumped more than 7% after reporting quarterly earnings that beat Wall Street’s expectations and raising its forward guidance. The company reported adjusted earnings per share of $1.50 on $152.81 billion in revenue, where analysts expected adjusted earnings per share of $1.32 and $147.75 billion in revenue, per Refinitiv.

Retail stocks — Retail stocks rose following Walmart and Home Depot‘s stronger-than-expected financial reports for the third quarter. Home Depot rose 1%, while Target shares rallied more than 3%. Kohl’s and Bed Bath & Beyond added roughly 3%. Macy’s and Nordstrom advanced about 5% and 3%, respectively.

Taiwan Semiconductor — Shares of the Taiwanese chipmaker soared more than 12% after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway built a $4 billion new stake in the company. Berkshire added more than 60 million shares of the Taiwanese chipmaker’s American depositary receipts, by the end of the third quarter, making Taiwan Semi the conglomerate’s 10th biggest holding at the end of September.

Paramount Global — Shares of the media company jumped more than 9% after a filing revealed that Berkshire Hathaway increased its holding to $1.7 billion at the end of the third quarter. Paramount is still down more than 30% this year as it suffered from cord cutting and a drop in advertising revenue.

Louisiana-Pacific — The lumber maker saw its stock jump more than 10% after Omaha-based Berkshire took new positions in the company last quarter. The conglomerate’s stake was worth $297 million at the end of September.

Bath & Body Works — Bath and Body Works rose 4% after an SEC filing revealed that Dan Loeb’s Third Point bought $265 million in the retailer’s stock in the third quarter.

Netflix — The streaming giant added 3.8% after Bank of America double-upgraded the stock to a buy from underperform. He said the new ad tier and crackdown on password sharing could help the stock’s value increase 23.6%.

Fulcrum Therapeutics — Shares of the biotechnology company gained 8.6% after Goldman Sachs initiated coverage of the stock as a buy and said it could see an upside of 61.5% if its main experimental drugs kept performing well.

Vodafone — Vodafone’s stock dropped 6.8% after the company cut its earnings guidance and cash flow forecast. The mobile operator cited a challenging economic environment.

Albemarle — Shares of the lithium miner dropped 6%. Rumors that an unnamed Chinese cathode manufacturer was cutting its production targets was putting pressure on U.S. lithium stocks, according to FactSet.

Signature Bank — Shares of the crypto bank jumped more than 10% after Signature reported minimal exposure to FTX and any potential destruction that could come from its collapse. Signature said it has only a deposit relationship with the exchange — it does not lend crypto or invest in it on behalf of clients — representing less than 0.1% of its overall deposits.

Mobileye Global — The autonomous vehicle systems software company rallied 4% after Baird initiated coverage of the stock with an outperform rating. Analyst Luke Junk called Mobileye a market leader, writing, “Net, we recommend purchase/would lean into any volatility, for this premier franchise/longer-term optionality.”

Sunnova Energy — Shares of solar company rose 7.5% after Deutsche Bank initiated coverage of Sunnova Energy, First Solar and Enphase Energy with buy ratings. First Solar was up 3.2%, and Enphase Energy rose 2%.

Capital One Financial — The regional bank’s stock sank 5% after it was downgraded by Bank of America to neutral from buy. Analyst Mihir Bhatia also cut his price target to $113 per share from $124.

Carnival — Shares of the cruise operator rose 6% after another report hinted inflation could be slowing. Royal Caribbean Cruises and Norwegian Cruise Line were also higher, up 4.9% and 2.5% respectively.

Chinese stocks — Chinese companies listed on the U.S. stock market rose following President Joe Biden’s meeting with China President Xi Jinping and despite disappointing retail sales data. Tencent Music Entertainment, which also posted beats on the top and bottom lines, soared about 30%. Alibaba rose roughly 12%. Pinduoduo and Baidu both rallied about 10%, and JD.com rose nearly 8%.

Disney plans job cuts and hiring freeze, CEO Bob Chapek says in memo

Disney plans to institute a targeted hiring freeze as well as some job cuts, according to an internal memo sent to executives.

“We are limiting headcount additions through a targeted hiring freeze,” CEO Bob Chapek said in a memo to division leads sent Friday and obtained by CNBC. “Hiring for the small subset of the most critical, business-driving positions will continue, but all other roles are on hold. Your segment leaders and HR teams have more specific details on how this will apply to your teams.”

He added: “As we work through this evaluation process, we will look at every avenue of operations and labor to find savings, and we do anticipate some staff reductions as part of this review.” Disney has approximately 190,000 employees.

Chapek also told executives business travel should be limited to essential trips only. Meetings should be conducted virtually as much as possible, he wrote in the memo.

Disney is also establishing “a cost structure taskforce” to be made up of Chief Financial Officer Christine McCarthy, General Counsel Horacio Gutierrez and Chapek.

“I am fully aware this will be a difficult process for many of you and your teams,” Chapek wrote. “We are going to have to make tough and uncomfortable decisions. But that is just what leadership requires, and I thank you in advance for stepping up during this important time.”

The moves come after Disney reported disappointing quarterly results. Shares of the company fell sharply Wednesday, hitting a new 52-week low, before rebounding later in the week.

McCarthy said during Disney’s earnings call Tuesday that the company was looking for ways to trim costs.

“We are actively evaluating our cost base currently, and we’re looking for meaningful efficiencies,” she said. “Some of those are going to provide some near-term savings, and others are going to drive longer-term structural benefits.”

Disney’s streaming services lost $1.47 billion last quarter, more than double the unit’s loss from a year prior. McCarthy said losses will improve in 2023, and Chapek has promised streaming will become profitable by the end of 2024.

Other large media and entertainment companies, including Warner Bros. Discovery and Netflix, have cut jobs this year as valuations have slumped. Disney hasn’t announced any plans to eliminate jobs.

As we begin fiscal 2023, I want to communicate with you directly about the cost management efforts Christine McCarthy and I referenced on this week’s earnings call. These efforts will help us to both achieve the important goal of reaching profitability for Disney+ in fiscal 2024 and make us a more efficient and nimble company overall. This work is occurring against a backdrop of economic uncertainty that all companies and our industry are contending with.

While certain macroeconomic factors are out of our control, meeting these goals requires all of us to continue doing our part to manage the things we can control—most notably, our costs. You all will have critical roles to play in this effort, and as senior leaders, I know you will get it done.

To be clear, I am confident in our ability to reach the targets we have set, and in this management team to get us there.

To help guide us on this journey, I have established a cost structure taskforce of executive officers: our CFO, Christine McCarthy and General Counsel, Horacio Gutierrez. Along with me, this team will make the critical big picture decisions necessary to achieve our objectives.

We are not starting this work from scratch and have already set several next steps—which I wanted you to hear about directly from me.

First, we have undertaken a rigorous review of the company’s content and marketing spending working with our content leaders and their teams. While we will not sacrifice quality or the strength of our unrivaled synergy machine, we must ensure our investments are both efficient and come with tangible benefits to both audiences and the company.

Second, we are limiting headcount additions through a targeted hiring freeze. Hiring for the small subset of the most critical, business-driving positions will continue, but all other roles are on hold. Your segment leaders and HR teams have more specific details on how this will apply to your teams.

Third, we are reviewing our SG&A costs and have determined that there is room for improved efficiency—as well as an opportunity to transform the organization to be more nimble. The taskforce will drive this work in partnership with segment teams to achieve both savings and organizational enhancements. As we work through this evaluation process, we will look at every avenue of operations and labor to find savings, and we do anticipate some staff reductions as part of this review. In the immediate term, business travel should now be limited to essential trips only. In-person work sessions or offsites requiring travel will need advance approval and review from a member of your executive team (i.e., direct report of the segment chairman or corporate executive officer). As much as possible, these meetings should be conducted virtually. Attendance at conferences and other external events will also be restricted and require approvals from a member of your executive team.

Our transformation is designed to ensure we thrive not just today, but well into the future—and you will hear more from our taskforce in the weeks and months ahead.

I am fully aware this will be a difficult process for many of you and your teams. We are going to have to make tough and uncomfortable decisions. Cramer warns growth stocks could see ‘more horror’ after CPI release

CNBC’s Jim Cramer on Wednesday warned that growth stocks could take another beating if the October consumer price index reading shows that inflation is still running rampant.

“If we get a steaming hot CPI reading, you’re going to see more horror on your screen, so that’s why people sold ahead of it,” he said.

The CPI measures the prices for a basket of goods and services. Investors will parse through the October report, set for release Thursday morning, for any signs that inflation has cooled with the view that the Federal Reserve could then ease its brisk pace of interest rate hikes.

Stocks fell on Wednesday, weighed down by a crypto sell-off and uncertainty about which political party will gain control of Congress following the midterm elections. The market’s decline comes after three consecutive days of gains.

Cramer echoed his advice to investors in recent weeks to stay away from semiconductor and tech stocks, including names like Meta, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Alphabet

“When rates go up, you immediately get this kneejerk sell-off in virtually everything, but especially in tech,” he said, adding: “Some of these companies are doing much better than others, yet they all trade the same.”
