Jonathan Van Ness Says Government’s Reaction to Monkeypox Is ‘Fueled by Homophobia and Transphobia’

Jonathan Van Ness is sharing his thoughts on the U.S. government’s “botched response” to the monkeypox outbreak.

In a pointed TIME essay published on Monday, the 35-year-old Queer Eye star recalled the moment the nation reported its first official case in May, calling out the government’s reaction.

“Watching the government’s botched response to monkeypox has been surreal, and in many ways, I believe it’s been fueled by homophobia and transphobia,” he said, adding, “When an outbreak affects mainly men who have sex with men, some portion of our elected legislators will have no incentive to act. He thinks it will not touch their constituents, which is obviously messed up because people’s lives are at stake, and there are queer people in all 50 states.”

The reality of the virus hit home for Van Ness when a friend was forced to cancel a trip to New Orleans, where Van Ness is taping Queer Eye, after being exposed to monkeypox.

“I started calling all the political contacts I have, ringing alarm bells about how quickly cases were rising, and pleading with officials to take the virus more seriously.”

Likening the government’s reaction to monkeypox to that of the deadly slow response by authorities to the AIDS epidemic, Van Ness said he is “disappointed” in politicians who were in office then and now “like President [Joe] Biden and Speaker [Nancy] Pelosi.”

“Once again, we’re seeing too little action taken until the situation has ballooned out of control. If nothing changes, we’ll continue to experience failures like this response, which has been plagued with too few tests, lack of access to treatments, inadequate vaccine supply, and ambiguous guidance,” he said.

Van Ness then called out officials for not taking “more proactive steps” to release an easily accessible vaccine after cases “began rising in June.”

“Why is it that we haven’t seen this administration prioritize the rapid procurement of monkeypox vaccines?’ he asked pointing to how, like at the start of the AIDS epidemic, many seem to be considering –– and dismissing –– the virus as something just impacting the LGBTQ+ community.

The star noted that monkeypox being declared a public health emergency “was a step in the right direction — but it was a day late and a dollar short” before sharing a joke he often tells during his stand-up shows.

“It’s been so funny watching straight people be shocked with the government response during COVID-19, because we’re like, ‘Honey, this is Tuesday,” Van Ness, who discovered he was HIV positive 10 years ago, said. “You thought the government was going to come help you?’ We’re used to this sort of inaction. Monkeypox is like: same day, different virus.”

Added the star: “I think that tragedy, hope, despair, and resilience all can live next door to each other. But we need to act.”

Stating that “everyone should care about monkeypox” even if they aren’t directly impacted by it, “because we should care about each other,” Van Ness left fans with a reminder that other diseases, such as HIV, still exist, along with the stereotypes around them and the limits to proper health care.

“This isn’t just a monkeypox story. This is a story of how we consistently fail people on the margins. We have to become bold about what we’re willing to witness—and no one should have been willing to witness this outbreak spread for the last two months,” he wrote.”

Smash Bros. Ultimate Last DLC Sparks Kingdom Hearts Debate

Are you pointing at the Smash invitation you shouldn’t get, Sora?

If you’ve spent any time on Twitter recently, you may have noticed Kingdom Hearts’ Sora has been trending. That’s thanks to the ever-vocal Super Smash Bros. Ultimate community once again debating the potential of Square Enix’s big-shoed hero joining the already-packed fighting game as its final new combatant.

This isn’t a new song and dance for the game’s community, of course. The conversation goes back to at least 2016, when modders Nibrock.Rock and KTH put Sora in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate using Shulk as the base. Hell, even pro Smash player Tyrell “Nakat” Coleman told Kotaku over Twitter DMs that he’s been begging for the character’s inclusion for “over 10 years.” That’s a long time for one request.

The discussion resurfaced this past week for two main reasons: Sora’s got as many haters and as he has stans, and on October 5 game director Masahiro Sakurai will reveal Smash Bros. Ultimate’s long-awaited final DLC character. Needless to say, there’s lots of speculation about who it could be. And the game’s community is very much torn when it comes to Sora.

Some fans, like Twitter user 2xDana_, don’t want Sora in the game because of the character’s Disney ties. 2xDana_ told us that while they dislike Disney’s business practices, they also fear the company “would have too big of an influence in their characters’ design in Smash, taking away from Sakurai and the design team’s vision.”

The Disney connection was a contentious point among fans, but so too was Sora’s look. IGN senior editor Kat Bailey echoed that sentiment, telling Kotaku over Twitter DMs she “dislikes his design—the big shoes, the hair, all of it.” Bailey also found Sora to be “the least interesting element of Kingdom Hearts,” though she did enjoy the myriad Disney references and Final Fantasy callbacks.

On the other side of the debate are Sora-loving diehards who would possibly kill to see the character join a Smash roster. An artist who goes by the Twitter handle Caehum, who happened to post a super-popular render of Sora in front of the Smash logo, told Kotaku that Sora was one of their favorite characters ever, and said they’d straight-up buy Super Smash Bros. Ultimate if Sakurai added Sora. (They don’t own the game, but have access to it via game sharing on Nintendo Switch.)

And of course, there’s pro Smash player and Joker/Pichu main Tyrell “Nakat” Coleman. Nakat, sporting #Sora4Smash in his Twitter name, told Kotaku that Kingdom Hearts fans have been “suffering” while waiting for the next mainline entry. (The long-awaited Kingdom Hearts 3 finally launched in 2019.)

“Sora is my favorite video game character and I have been begging for his inclusion for over 10 years now,” Nakat said over DM. “I think he fits in [Super Smash Bros. Ultimate] as an exciting character not only lore-wise, but gameplay as well. With how big he is as a gaming icon I think it is the proper sendoff to Sakurai’s years of work and having most of the world happy with his inclusion is a bonus.”

As a Kingdom Hearts fan myself, I can’t claim to be an unbiased observer. I think Sora would be a cool addition to the Smash roster. He’s got a deep moveset that spans multiple games, so there’s plenty of material to pull from, with copious keyblades and outfits to choose from.

That said! To be honest, I actually don’t want to see Sora in the game, in part because there are too many damn sword characters already. By my count, and according to Screen Rant, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has 20 bladed fighters. If Sora were added, that would mean some 25% of the 82 combatants use swords. That’s way too many! Couple this with the glut of echo fighters, and Sora starts to feel a little redundant in the roster.

So if not Sora, then who? Popular theories range from Jill Valentine to Tifa Lockhart, with dark horses including Dr. Eggman and Phoenix Wright. But Kingdom Hearts and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate YouTuber HMK, who’s released several videos about why Sora should be in the game, has one specific selection.

“While I had some heavily desired picks that eventually became Mii Costumes such as Travis and Dante, when it comes to another big character, I would want…It would definitely be Master Chief from Halo,” HMK told Kotaku over email.” Time to Finish the Fight!”

And yes, as usual, approximately half the internet is still holding out hope for Goku.

All will be revealed on Tuesday, though, when Sakurai-san will debut the game’s 82nd, final character, which will be the final component of the Fighters Pass Vol. 2 DLC. What could well be the final Smash Direct will begin on October 5 at 10 a.m. ET.

Why Choosing Random In Fighting Games Is A Huge Flex

Screenshot: Nintendo / Kotaku

Last week, publisher GameMill Entertainment unveiled Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, a fighting game featuring iconic Nickelodeon characters like SpongeBob SquarePants, Nigel Thornberry, and that one dude with the toast-shaped face. Between the memes, you might see prospective players debate who’d be the strongest fighter (Patrick Star, obviously) and who they plan on maining (also Patrick Star), even this far out from release. I say such debate is needless.

The right answer is no answer at all.

Read More: Nickelodeon Fighting Game Devs Have High Hopes, Competitive Dreams

All-Star Brawl sounds and looks like a legit Smash clone, one with potentially better online functionality than Nintendo’s fighting game. If you, playing as a randomly selected All Stars character, go up against someone fighting as their “main”—a.k.a., the person they’re most accustomed to playing as—you’ve instantly inured yourself to loss. Choosing random also telegraphs a level of self-assuredness only present in players who really know their shit.

Sure, you might technically “lose” a particular match after choosing a random fighter, but you can always chalk that loss up to an imbalanced match-up. Maybe the fickle whims of fate assign you a fighter you’ve mastered. More likely, they’ve stuck you with one you’re woefully unfamiliar with—or have never played before. C’mon, how is that a balanced measure of skill? The game was an uneven playing field; the scales were tipped against you from the jump.

Meanwhile, winning means you get to say you’ve nabbed glory against the odds. Your opponent had the pick of the whole lot, selected the fighter they’re (probably) best at, and still lost—against someone who had no say in the matter as to who they fought as.

In other words, it’s a win-win scenario, at least for you, chooser of “random.”

I’ve learned this lesson the hard way, mostly via five iterations and hundreds if not thousands of hours of Super Smash Bros., Nintendo’s long-running platform fighting game. One guy in our Smash group considers it a point of personal pride to be an effective brawler with every character on the roster. When we meet other Smash players at bars or parties, this will inevitably come up.

“Who’s your main?” people will ask.

“No one,” he’ll say with the dead-eyed confidence of someone who knows he’ll win. “Everyone,” he’ll add with a shrug. “Random.”

It’s maddening.

Periodically, while we’re choosing fighters, he’ll move his cursor over to the “random” tile. Everyone will then sigh and move their cursors over, too. To do otherwise would result in us decried as cowards. Any wins don’t really count. Any losses count double. We know the rules.

On the flip side, playing under such conditions has been a years-long boot camp that’s honed me into a far better player than I’d be if I stuck with Yoshi or Roy or the L-Man for every match. Look, I’m not gonna stand on some pedestal and claim I’m now great—or even merely good—with every single Smash fighter. But, at this point, I’m passably decent with the 912-character roster of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Basically, if you and I both squared off and chose our “best” fighters, you might win. But if we both agreed to let the game choose for us? Well, that’s another story.

Wanna put money on it?
