MLB, union finish 17-hour negotiating marathon with no deal

For a second straight Tuesday, MLB and the Players Association spent a long day of negotiating — and ended up without a deal.

With the MLB lockout into its fourth month, the owners gave the players another Tuesday deadline to try to preserve a 162-game schedule — after initially saying last week that the first two series of the season had been canceled.

But after 17 hours of negotiating that began Tuesday morning and lasted into early Wednesday morning, a league official said the union asked for time for its executive board to review MLB’s latest proposal and said it would respond Wednesday morning.

Previously, MLB threatened another week of missed games during the regular season if no deal was reached Tuesday, but the talks will continue Wednesday with no added cancellations .

Top negotiators for both sides met several times in midtown trying to hammer out a deal, with the sides butting heads over several key areas, including the competitive balance tax, the pre-arbitration pool and minimum salary.

Progress had been made late Monday, when MLB raised its proposal for the first CBT tier from $220 million to $228 million, still short of the union’s request of $238 million.

They came closer on Tuesday, with the league proposing a deal that included a threshold beginning at $230 million, which would rise to $242 million, a source confirmed after the numbers first reported by The Athletic.

The players have been at $238 million to start, with the threshold moving to $263 million over the length of the deal.

And MLB also wants a fourth tier of penalty when it comes to the CBT, in the hopes of cutting back at what the league calls “runaway spending.”

The league also is interested in introducing an international draft, long considered a non-starter by the union.

The owners also increased their offer for the pre-arbitration pool to $40 million per season, still short of the $80 million the players have sought. And the minimum salary in the owner’s proposal would go from $700,000 next season to $770,000 by the end of the CBA.

The talks came a week to the day after the two sides met for over 16 hours in Jupiter, Fla., only to see them break down and lead to more animosity between both sides that continued through the weekend.

Since Monday, though, there has been a more conciliatory tone in the discussions as the last gasp of a full season is on display.

Louisville, coach Chris Mack negotiating final stages of separation agreement: Source

Louisville and coach Chris Mack are in the final stages of negotiations for a separation agreement, a source with direct knowledge told The Athletic on Tuesday.

A meeting of Louisville’s Board of Trustees and Athletics Board has been called for Wednesday to consider approving the agreement and Tuesday’s edition of the Chris Mack Radio Show was canceled. Nothing is finalized but the widespread expectation in Louisville is that Mack has coached his last game there.

Mack is in his fourth season of a seven-year deal with Louisville, which has gone 11-9 (5-5 in ACC play) this year. All five of the Cardinals’ conference losses have come in their last six games. After the team’s loss to Notre Dame Saturday, center Malik Williams was asked if the players had tuned out the coaching staff, responding “I don’t have a comment for that.”

In Mack’s first season (2018-19), the team earned a 20-14 record and a No. 7 seed in the NCAA Tournament. In the 2019-20 campaign, the Cardinals went 24-7 before the postseason was canceled due to COVID-19. In the 2020-21 pandemic-shortened season, Louisville went 13-7.

To start this season, Mack was suspended without pay for six games — from Nov. 6 through Nov. 27 — for failure “to follow university guidelines, policies, and procedures in handling” an extortion attempt by former assistant Dino Gaudio. Gaudio had said in court documents that he knew of NCAA violations being committed by the program a year before his firing in March 2021.

As a result of the dust-up between Mack and Gaudio, Louisville faces three more alleged NCAA violations. The program still faces a total of one Level I and six Level II violations, most stemming back to the FBI pay-to-play investigation into college basketball in 2013.

Mack was previously the head coach at Xavier for nine seasons; he was named National Coach of the Year in 2016. Mack’s teams have participated in the NCAA Tournament in nine of his 12 seasons as head coach.

Netanyahu negotiating plea deal in corruption trial

Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is negotiating a plea deal in his corruption case

TEL AVIV, Israel — Former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is negotiating a plea deal in his corruption case, a person involved in the talks said Sunday.

Reports of a deal angered critics who said a it would undermine the rule of law.

“The man who worked to destroy the public’s trust in the foundations of democracy for personal reasons is not eligible for deals,” Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz tweeted. He was referring to Netanyahu’s attempts after he was indicted to cast doubt on Israel’s justice system, saying it was biased and pursuing a witch hunt against him.

Demonstrators gathered against the developing deal outside the attorney general’s house Saturday evening. Any deal will likely be challenged in court.

A spokesman for Netanyahu declined to comment.

Netanyahu is on trial for fraud, breach of trust and accepting bribes in three separate cases. The former premier, now opposition leader, denies wrongdoing.

The person involved in the negotiations said the plea deal would drop the bribery and fraud charges and scrap one case entirely.

The person asked for anonymity because he wasn’t authorized to discuss the details of the talks. He said a plea deal would likely be announced in the coming days.

The person said a number of elements remained unresolved, including the inclusion of the charge of “moral turpitude,” which under Israeli law would ban Netanyahu from politics for seven years. They were also deliberating whether Netanyahu would be forced to do community service under the deal.

Including “moral turpitude” would challenge Netanyahu’s vows to return to lead the country after his 12-year reign was ended last year by a coalition of ideologically disparate parties with little in common other than its opposition to his leadership. But Netanyahu, dubbed a political wizard for his ability to survive repeated attempts at ending his rule, could make a comeback when the ban expires. He would be nearly 80.

His departure from the political scene would set off a leadership race in the Likud party, with several lawmakers already promising to run. Likud isn’t expected to remain as dominant without Netanyahu, but would still be a major force under a new leader.

With Netanyahu gone, the more nationalist elements of the coalition could decide to break off from the fragile union and opt to join forces with their ideological brethren.

Netanyahu is charged in three separate cases. The first alleges that Netanyahu received gifts worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from wealthy associates.

In the second case, Netanyahu is accused of orchestrating positive coverage in a major Israeli paper in exchange for promoting legislation that would have harmed the news outlet’s chief rival, a free pro-Netanyahu daily.

The third, nicknamed Case 4000, alleges that Netanyahu promoted legislation worth hundreds of millions of dollars to the owner of Israeli telecom giant Bezeq in exchange for positive coverage on its Walla news site.
