Nebraska football, Matt Rhule land commitment from Texas 2023 WR

Texas wide receiver Jeremiah Charles will be a Husker. The 2023 prospect out of Arlington Martin High School committed to Nebraska on Monday.

Charles’ pledge gives the Huskers three commitments on the day as he joins Texas 2023 TE Ismael Smith Flores and Georgia OL transfer Jacob Hood.

Charles joins Smith Flores as the Huskers’ second commitment out of Arlington Martin, where both were coached by Nebraska tight ends coach Bob Wager.

It was a fast recruitment between Charles and Nebraska since the team offered him just last week. Matt Rhule got a unique perspective on what type of player and person Charles is because of Wager.

Nebraska was at his high school on Jan. 17 where they saw Charles play basketball. Charles might not have known it going into the game but that game ended up being very important for his future. After putting up 22 points that included four dunks Nebraska had seen enough. The program offered him a scholarship–his first for football–and set an official visit.

In his first year of playing football Charles caught 23 passes for 452 yards and five touchdowns. The Texas native is a three-sport athlete that showed his skills as a triple jumper through his high school career.

The overhaul of the receiver room has been a priority this offseason for Nebraska. The team needed more numbers there but also more variety in the types of players in the room.

“Receiver is a spot we need to build,” offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield said Jan. 6. “We’ve got some good receivers, I just think we need to build the depth there, and the different types of receivers. You don’t want them all to look the same and be the same. You need different body types.”

Charles is the sixth Texan to join the Huskers’ 2023 recruiting class. The Lone Star State has been an intense focus for Rhule since taking over as Nebraska coach, and Charles’ commitment was the latest example.

Monday’s commitments of Charles and Smith Flores puts the Huskers at 25 commitments in the 2023 class, and they are now tied with Colorado for the No. 25-ranked class in the nation. Nebraska remains No. 4 in the Big Ten – well ahead of Iowa and trailing Ohio State, Penn State and Michigan.

Nebraska football lands former LSU, Georgia TE transfer

Nebraska’s tight end room gained an intriguing addition from the transfer portal today in Arik Gilbert. The former top-10 national recruit, who spent time at both LSU and Georgia, has committed to the Huskers.

Gilbert, a 6-foot-5, 255-pounder, was the No. 9 overall recruit and No. 1-rated tight end in the 2020 class out of Marietta, Georgia. The former five-star athlete and Gatorade National Player of the Year chose LSU out of high school before transferring to Georgia.

>>> RELATED: Three thoughts on how Gilbert’s commitment impacts Nebraska

He is the No. 6 tight end and No. 92 overall player in the Rivals transfer rankings, and he has a 5.8 player rating. He joins safety Corey Collier Jr. (No. 73 overall) as the Huskers’ second transfer addition ranked in the top 100.

Gilbert, who has up to three years of eligibility remaining, is the Huskers’ 10th transfer portal addition of the offseason. Nebraska got him on campus for a visit in mid-January, and Matt Rhule and Bob Wager were able to land his commitment. He will need a waiver from the NCAA to play in 2023 because it is his second transfer.

Gilbert had a great true freshman season in 2020, playing in eight of LSU’s 10 games. He showed off his ability to be a dynamic receiving target as he caught 35 passes for 368 yards and two touchdowns.

Gilbert entered the transfer portal following his freshman season at LSU and landed at Georgia after initially committing to Florida out of the portal. He stepped away from the team for personal reasons in August 2021, though, and never played during the 2021 season.

Gilbert returned to Georgia’s team in January 2022 and played in three games last season behind other talented tight ends in John Mackey Award winner Brock Bowers, Darnell Washington and highly rated freshman Oscar Delp. The most action Gilbert saw was against Vanderbilt, where he caught two passes for 16 yards and one touchdown.

Gilbert joins a Nebraska tight end room that loses its top two contributors in Travis Vokolek and Chancellor Brewington. The room currently lacks experience and production as the other scholarship tight ends in it include Thomas Fidone II, Chris Hickman, AJ Rollins, James Carnie, Chase Androff and Brodie Tagaloa.

Nebraska hosted tight end Brett Seither, Gilbert’s teammate at Georgia, for a visit in mid-January, but Seither chose to play for Georgia Tech next season.

Gilbert is Nebraska’s second transfer addition from Georgia, joining OLB MJ Sherman, and he is the Huskers’ sixth transfer from the SEC.

He is the 12th player from the portal to be added to Rhule’s roster as receivers Zavier Betts and Isaiah Garcia-Castaneda withdrew from the portal and returned to Nebraska. Betts left the team for personal reasons in March 2022 while Garcia-Castaneda entered the transfer portal on Oct. 11, four games into the 2022 season, but chose to return.

The deadline for players to enter the portal was Jan. 18, and the deadline for players to join the program and still be eligible to participate in spring practices is Jan. 23 – the first day of classes in the second semester at Nebraska.

Ohio State Ties Longest Losing Streak in the Chris Holtmann Era With 63-60 Defeat to Nebraska

The hole keeps getting deeper for the Buckeyes.

Ohio State’s losing streak has now stretched to five straight games following a 63-60 Wednesday loss on the road at Nebraska, which was the second-to-last-place team in the Big Ten entering the night. The loss comes just six days after the Buckeyes fell to last-place Minnesota at home, and Ohio State has now tied its longest skid in the Chris Holtmann era.

Team 1 2 FINAL
OHIO STATE 22 38 60
NEBRASKA 21 42 63

Points were hard to come by in an opening half that saw both teams shoot 30% or under. After playing from behind for most of the period, the Buckeyes put together a quick spurt in the final minutes of the half to steal a lead before the intermission.

It didn’t stick, though, as frequent Ohio State turnovers and Nebraska’s pronounced advantage in interior scoring helped the Huskers take control late in the second half. The Buckeyes only trailed by two points with 10 seconds left, and still had a chance to send the game to overtime with a final shot.

With Brice Sensabaugh having already fouled out, Sean McNeil’s game-tying attempt rimmed out at the buzzer.

First Half

The offensive struggles that plagued the Buckeyes in the past few games followed them into this one. Ohio State hit just one of its first 11 shots from the floor, although the Huskers only hit two of their opening 10 on the other end.

But Nebraska had the edge early, holding a lead from 18:06 to 1:47 as the Buckeyes continued to struggle. Sensabaugh and Justice Sueing combined to miss their first 11 shots from the floor while the Huskers managed to be slightly more efficient on offense.

OHIO STATE STAT NEBRASKA

5-17 (29.4%) 3PM-3PA (PCT.) 6-21 (28.6%)
15-23 (83.3%) FTM-FTA (PCT.) 11-17 (74.1%)
11 TURNOVERS 13
38 TOTAL REBOUNDS 39
6 OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS 4
32 DEFENSIVE REBOUNDS 35
12 BENCH POINTS 16
5 BLOCKS 3
6 STEALS 5
9 ASSISTS 11

Despite Ohio State’s offensive ineptitude, Nebraska’s own struggles left the door open for the Buckeyes to take a one-point lead on the back of a 7-0 run with less than two minutes to go in the half. The Buckeyes held that 22-21 advantage as the buzzer sounded, heading into the locker room with a lead despite trailing for 16:20 of the period.

Ohio State shot just 26.7% from the field and 14.3% from the 3-point line, but seven Nebraska turnovers and a 3:12 scoring drought to end the half helped the Buckeyes get back out in front. The Huskers hit just 30% of their first-half shots and missed three of their four free-throw attempts.

Second Half

Ohio State scored 10 of the first 16 points of the second half to earn some breathing room with a five-point lead at the 16:10 mark. But the Huskers responded with back-to-back 3-pointers in the following 58 seconds to retake the lead into the under-16-minute media timeout.

Zed Key scored five straight points from 14:22 to 12:45 to take Ohio State from down three to up two, and the Buckeyes had another chance to take a two-possession lead after Husker head coach Fred Hoiberg was whistled for a technical foul. But McNeil, who hadn’t missed a free throw all season entering the game, missed both attempts.

Both teams traded buckets and leads thereafter as each side heated up considerably from their first-half pace on offense. Sensabaugh scored seven straight points for Ohio State in a two-minute span to give the Buckeyes a two-point edge at 8:55, but Nebraska had an answer as it fired back with an 8-0 run to take a 55-49 lead. Three Ohio State turnovers in less than four minutes contributed to the Husker spurt.

By the 3:41 mark, Ohio State hadn’t hit a shot in well over five minutes of game time as Nebraska held onto a two-possession lead.

The Buckeyes cut it to a three-point game with 2:20 to play, and Ohio State was within two points of the Huskers with 1:48 left on the clock. Ohio State still had a chance in the final 40 seconds as Sensabaugh knocked down a 3-pointer to make it a three-point deficit late.

Ohio State had a final chance to tie the game up in the waning moments, but McNeil’s 3-pointer was off the mark.

Game Notes

  • After coming off the bench on Sunday, both Brice Sensabaugh and Zed Key returned to the starting lineup against Nebraska. Bruce Thornton, Sean McNeil and Justice Sueing were the other three starters for the Buckeyes.
  • Ohio State dropped its lone meeting with the Cornhuskers last season, a 78-70 upset loss at the Schottenstein Center with the Buckeyes holding the No. 23 ranking in the AP poll.
  • Before last year’s loss, Ohio State had won six straight games against Nebraska and 10 of the previous 11 matchups.
  • Fred Hoiberg lost four of his first five matchups against Ohio State since taking over as Nebraska’s head coach in 2019-20.
  • Starting Nebraska forward Juwan Gary (shoulder) did not suit up for the Huskers.
