DC Residents Demand Police Action After 13-Year-Old Killed – NBC4 Washington

The fatal shooting of a middle-school student has sparked public uproar as the nation’s capital struggles with rising tensions about violent crime and racial justice.

Police said they found 13-year-old Karon Blake early Saturday morning suffering from multiple gunshot wounds after having been shot by a local resident, who said Blake had been breaking into area cars.

According to the police media report on the incident, the resident “heard noises and observed someone that appeared to be tampering with vehicles. The male resident went outside, armed with a registered firearm, to further investigate. There was an interaction between a juvenile male and the male resident. During the interaction, the male resident discharged his firearm striking the victim.”

Blake died of his injuries at the hospital, and his death has sparked a fierce community response from activists demanding that the shooter be arrested and his name be made public.

The shooter has not been charged with a crime or publicly identified, but police and the U.S. Attorney’s Office say the investigation is ongoing.

A community meeting Tuesday night drew more than 300 angry citizens, packing a community center adjacent to Brookland Middle School, which Blake attended.

“I didn’t know you could just kill somebody over property damage. That’s just crazy,” said Sean Long, the teen’s grandfather.

Struggling to speak over the shouts of the crowd, Assistant Police Chief Morgan Kane of the Metropolitan Police Department said she could not share the shooter’s identity or any details about the investigation in progress.

“We want the same thing you want,” Kane said. “We want to find out what happened and whatever chips fall, they fall.”

Area resident Tracey Lucas addressed Kane and accused the MPD of taking a soft approach to what she said was vigilante violence against a young Black man. She compared the shooting to the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin by George Zimmerman — an event that led to the creation of the Black Lives Matter movement.

“I don’t see why you are protecting his name,” Lucas said. “Knowing who the killer is does not breach this investigation.”

A group of community activists launched a new movement aimed at reducing violence in D.C. News4’s Mauricio Casillas reports.

At one point, the crowd broke into a loud chant protesting D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s absence, shouting, “Where is the mayor?”

Earlier in the day, MPD Chief Robert Contee pleaded for patience and warned against misinformation and hysteria.

“There has been too much misinformation swirling around this incident,” Contee said. “Too many people have made assumptions about this case and it is unfair to the grieving family.”

The controversy comes at a delicate time for Bowser, who is regarded by Black Lives Matter and other activist groups as a staunch police defender. Last week, Bowser, who just began a third term in office, vetoed a sweeping revision of the city’s criminal code that would, among other things, reduce the maximum penalties for offenses such as burglary, carjacking and robbery.

In coming out against the bill, Bowser stated, “Anytime there’s a policy that reduces penalties, I think it sends the wrong message.”

The D.C. Council, which unanimously approved the revision, appears likely to override her decision.

Maryland Building Explosion Injures at Least 10 – NBC4 Washington

An explosion and two-alarm fire in Gaithersburg, Maryland, demolished a portion of two residential buildings Wednesday and sent at least 10 people to hospitals, including four children. Two adults have traumatic injuries, an official said.

The blast tore through the Potomac Oaks Condominium in the 800 block of Quince Orchard Boulevard near Rabbit Road at about 8:40 a.m. Wednesday, officials said. Montgomery County Fire & Rescue received multiple calls reporting the explosion and fire, which sent smoke into the air that was visible from miles away.

“It felt like we were bombed,” said a man who felt the blast from his office nearby. “…My heart goes out to everyone.”

The fire went to a second alarm within minutes. While much of the blaze was extinguished in about 40 minutes, crews were still fighting a gas-fed fire in the basement hours later and continued to battle hot spots that were flaring up.

Video and images from the scene showed a massive wall of orange flames and a gaping hole after the blast leveled a portion of a garden-style apartment building. Smoke choked the gap between two jagged edges of the building that apparently was the site of the blast.

A 50-to-75-foot field of debris and rubble covered the grass outside the building. Large chunks of bricks and cinderblocks were visible.

“Woke up to an explosion out front,” said a man who discovered that a steel door had been blown into his living room.

The force of the explosion was so powerful that two people in the area told News4 their bodies were physically shaken by the blast.

Ten people were taken to hospitals, authorities said. Two adults were seriously injured and were rushed to a trauma center, Montgomery County Fire Chief Scott Goldstein said. Eight other people — four children and four adults — had non-life-threatening injuries, Goldstein said.

Other people were evaluated, Fire & Rescue spokesperson Pete Piringer said, but the situation was still fluid.

There was no information available yet on whether anyone else was unaccounted for. Fire & Rescue crews were working with Washington Gas to shut off the gas, but it was not currently safe to search for anyone else inside the building, Goldstein said about 10:40 a.m.

Maintenance workers rescued two people from an apartment using ladders before firefighters arrived, Goldstein said.

The cause of the fire and explosion is yet to be determined, but Goldstein said there was what appeared to be a “gas-fed” fire in the basement.

After first responders arrived, some residents told them they had smelled gas earlier in the morning.

“The smell of gas this morning had been reported to our investigators,” Goldstein said, but he said 911 staff had not received a call before the explosion about the odor of gas. However, it was not yet known whether anyone might have contacted Washington Gas, any other agencies or building management.

Anyone who smells gas at any time should immediately call 911, Goldstein said.

In a statement late Wednesday morning, Washington Gas officials said they were “aware of the incident this morning in Montgomery County, Maryland. Our personnel are responding to assist the fire department on the scene. As always, the safety of our customers and community is our top priority. We are supporting the active response to the incident and do not have further details to share at this time.”

It wasn’t immediately known how many people lived in the affected units. Goldstein said the Potomac Oaks complex has four buildings with a total of 24 units. Two of the buildings were badly damaged, and the other two were evacuated.

Potomac Oaks resident Traci DiMartini was at work in the District when friends suddenly started calling her phone Wednesday morning, but it wasn’t until the fire department rang that she learned her home of 19 years was gone.

DiMartini, a federal worker who was giving a presentation at the time of the blast, said fire officials were called to account for residents. Soon after, she said she spoke with her downstairs neighbor, who was able to escape.

“She had just gotten out, and I think she was in shock, too,” DiMartini said.

DiMartini spoke with News4 as she raced home to see if her cat, Rocky, somehow survived the explosion. She wasn’t hopeful. She’s also anxious for answers about what caused the blast.

DiMartini told News4 the neighbor across the hallway from her unit was renovating their condo, though it’s as of yet unclear whether that was connected to the explosion. Another neighbor, who also lost her home but asked News4 to not be identified, also said the unit across from DiMartini was being renovated by new owners.

DiMartini grew emotional as she spoke of raising her daughter, who is away at college, in her longtime Gaithersburg condo.

“It’s the only home she’s ever known,” she said.

This is at least the third apartment building explosion in Montgomery County in recent years. In 2016, a massive natural gas explosion at the Flower Branch apartments in Silver Spring killed seven people. Earlier this year, an explosion at another building in Silver Spring injured 14 people after a worker accidentally cut a gas line.

People who were nearby at the time of Wednesday’s explosion said on Twitter they could see smoke from miles away. A video posted by Channing Work just before 9 a.m. showed dark smoke rising into the area. Sirens were audible in the distance.

Multiple roads were closed in the area, which includes apartments, townhomes and commercial space. The nearby Brown Station Elementary School was not affected, but students will dismissed early Wednesday, at 12:30 p.m.

14 Hurt After Car Slams Into Arlington Pub, Sparks Fire – NBC4 Washington

Fourteen people were hurt when a car slammed into an Irish pub, causing the building to catch fire in Arlington’s Courthouse neighborhood Friday evening.

Medics took eight people to hospitals, and four of them were critically injured, Virginia’s Arlington County police said. The other four patients have injuries that are not life-threatening, according to police. Medics treated six other people at the scene, and they are all OK, police said.

Photos of the scene at Ireland’s Four Courts show a gaping hole in the front of the building with clouds of smoke pouring out.

A spokesperson for the fire department said the crash happened about 6:45 p.m., and firefighters arrived to the pub to find it engulfed in flames. The fire has since been extinguished, the fire department said.

Mary Reilly, a server at Ireland’s Four Courts pub in Arlington, Virginia, describes the moments when a car slammed into the restaurant Friday night.

“I was just talking to some regulars that come in and I heard a bang. We all heard a bang, an explosion so I just turned around and I saw all the debris coming towards the back of the pub. So, it was just pure panic,” Mary Reilly, a server at the pub, told News4. “It was just pure panic. ‘Everybody out the back, everybody out the back.’ That’s what it was. Just panic.”

Reilly said she didn’t see the car at all from where she was, and she saw smoke and debris.

“I thought the whole place was just going to explode,” she said.

Reilly said she believes the amount of people injured would have been worse had the bar been busier, as it typically is on a Friday night.

“It’s the grace of God that we weren’t busy tonight. Of course, servers, bartenders complain that we’re not being busy, but we’re usually packed. That top bar where the car went through is usually packed,” she said.

It’s too early to know why the car crashed into the building or the extent of the structural damage to the pub, the spokesperson said. While it’s unclear what direction the car was traveling before the crash, the restaurant sits at an intersection with N. Courthouse Road ending at Wilson Boulevard.

More than an hour after the crash, dozens of firefighters, medics and police officers were still working at the scene.

Ireland’s Four Courts is a popular spot for soccer fans and the bar’s trivia nights also garner crowds.

The pub has been around for 20 years, according to its website. It asked in a tweet to “keep the all the injured in your thoughts and prayers.”

Multiple People Killed in Shooting at Maryland Manufacturing Plant – NBC4 Washington

Three people are dead and four others are wounded after someone opened fire inside a manufacturing facility in western Maryland Thursday afternoon, authorities say.

Deputies responded to the active shooting at Columbia Machine, Inc. on Bikle Road in Smithsburg around 2:30 p.m.

A short time later, about 5 or so miles south of the plant, a Maryland state trooper suffered a minor injury in a shootout with the suspect on Mapleville Road, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said.

Authorities captured the shooter, who is alive, officials said.

Chopper4 video of the aftermath of that scene shows a red four-door car pinned in by a burgundy SUV on Mapleville Road near the Mt. Aetna traffic circle.

On the ground outside the driver’s side door of the red car, police put an evidence marker next to a gun.

The shooter was hospitalized, but their condition is unclear at this time.

“The suspect is no longer a threat to the community,” the Washington County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.

Smithsburg is in a remote area near the Maryland-Pennsylvania border a few miles from Hagerstown, Maryland, and about 75 miles west of Baltimore.

No further information was immediately available.
