Person of Interest Arrested in Pennsylvania Near Pocono Mountains – NBC10 Philadelphia

A man has been taken into custody near the Pocono Mountains in connection with the homicide of four University of Idaho students.

Bryan Kohberger, 28, is the person of interest in custody in Monroe County, Pa., sources confirm to NBC10’s Deanna Durante and Brian Sheehan.

Further circumstances regarding the nature of the arrest and the suspect’s capture are not yet known. Kohberger appeared in front of a Monroe County judge around 8:30 a.m. Friday, sources tell NBC10.

The Nov. 13 killings of the four students — Madison Mogan, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle, and Ethan Chapin — left their community of Moscow, Idaho in shock and garnered attention nationwide.

Police say the four were stabbed to death in an off-campus house rented by the three female students in the middle of the night, some with wounds that suggest they fought back against their attacker. The investigation to this point has largely come up empty. Two roommates on the first floor who police say slept through the attack have already been ruled out as suspects.

A press conference is scheduled in Moscow, Idaho at 4 p.m. ET.

At Least 9 Wounded in Philadelphia Mass Shooting, Police Say – NBC10 Philadelphia

At least nine people were wounded in a mass shooting in Philadelphia’s Kensington neighborhood Saturday night, police said.

Philadelphia Police Department Inspector D.F. Pace said the victims were shot near Kensington and Allegheny avenues, adding that there are likely more victims than the initial nine. Two were in critical condition and seven were stable, Deputy Police Commissioner John Stanford said.

The shooting happened around 10:45 p.m. outside a bar in the area, Pace said. The gunmen got out of a black vehicle and opened fire on a crowd on the sidewalk before getting back in the vehicle and fleeing, Stanford said.

There were police officers in the area who heard the gunshots, he noted. “Our men and women are where they’re supposed to be in the sense of being out here patrolling, but we have some brazen individuals in this city that don’t care. They don’t care how many police officers are out here, and some of them don’t care in terms of how many people are out here,” the deputy police commissioner said.

Police did not immediately make an arrest, nor could they immediately determine a motive.

NBC10 spoke with state Rep. Amen Brown, a Democrat who represents West Philadelphia, who said he received a call “from the chief” and got out of bed to get to the scene of the shooting.

Brown laid blame for the city’s gun violence on Mayor Jim Kenney, the office of District Attorney Larry Krasner and “weak City Council members.” “Innocent women and children are dying every single day, and it’s got to stop,” Brown said, adding that solutions will only be found with legislators working across party lines.

As of Saturday night, the PPD had recorded at least 447 homicides in the city. At least 417 of those killings were committed with guns, according to a city controller’s office tally, which was last updated Nov. 3.

Street Cleaner Fatally Shot by Coworker in ShopRite Parking Lot, Police Say – NBC10 Philadelphia

A street cleaner was fatally shot by his coworker early Saturday morning in a ShopRite parking lot in Philadelphia, authorities said.

After the two men had a verbal altercation inside a street sweeping vehicle, the pair pulled over at a ShopRite parking lot on Oxford Avenue in Oxford Circle, Philadelphia police Capt. A.J. Mirabella Jr. told NBC10.

One man pulled out a handgun and shot the other man once in the chest, Mirabella Jr. said, adding that the shooter turned himself in when police arrived at the scene.

The victim, 44, was pronounced dead at the scene at around 3:18 a.m., police said.

The deadly shooting comes amid another night of gun violence in Philadelphia, with a 22-year-old man fatally shot in a building on N. American Street in Feltonville at around 4:41 a.m., police said.

A third shooting was reported in North Philadelphia on N. Bancroft Street around 9:12 a.m. Saturday, police said, which left a 26-year-old man in critical condition.

Another shooting was reported in Bridesburg after a male victim was shot in the back on Edgemont Street. The victim was listed in critical condition; no arrests have been made as of Saturday morning.

The offenders reportedly fled in a black and white Toyota Camry southbound on Edgemont Street, police said. One offender is described as wearing all-black clothing with white socks; the second is described as wearing an Adidas hooded sweatshirt with white stripes and grey shorts.

A count by the Philadelphia Office of the City Controller, last updated Oct. 19, shows at least 403 fatal and 1,535 non deadly victims of gunfire in 2022. The Philadelphia Police Department had recorded at least 433 killings as of Oct. 22, a 2% decrease from the same time in 2021, which ended as the year with the most killings in Philadelphia’s recorded history.

OSHA Investigates Deaths of NJ Amazon Workers – NBC10 Philadelphia

Federal work-safety investigators are looking into the death of an Amazon worker and an injury that potentially led to the death of another employee, adding to a probe already underway following a third fatality during the company’s annual Prime Day shopping event in mid-July.

All three Amazon workers died within the past month and were employed at company facilities in New Jersey.

The new Occupational Health and Safety Administration investigations are putting fresh scrutiny on Amazon’s injury rates and workplace-safety procedures, which have long been criticized by labor and safety advocates as inadequate.

Department of Labor spokesperson Denisha Braxton confirmed Thursday that the most-recent fatality took place last week at an Amazon facility in Monroe Township, about 20 miles (35 kilometers) northeast of Trenton. The second probe is looking into a July 24 accident at an Amazon facility in Robbinsville. The worker involved in that accident died three days later, according to Braxton.

In a statement, Robbinsville Police Chief Michael Polaski said police responded to the warehouse, called PNE5, on July 24 after receiving a report that a worker fell from a three-foot (one-meter) ladder and struck his head.

Polaski said the worker was conscious and alert when police arrived. But police were told CPR was conducted on the person by other workers prior to their arrival, he said. The person was transported to a hospital and OSHA was notified of the incident on the same day, he added.

Police in Monroe Township didn’t immediately reply for a request for comment on the incident there.

The two most recent deaths were first reported by the USA Today Network.

OSHA officials declined to provide additional information about any of the deaths, citing the open investigations. The agency has up to six month to complete each probe.

Sam Stephenson, a spokesperson for Seattle-based Amazon, said in a statement the company was “deeply saddened by the passing of our colleagues and offer our condolences to their family and friends.”

“Our investigations are ongoing and we’re cooperating with OSHA, which is conducting its own reviews of the events, as it often does in these situations,” Stephenson said.

Last month, OSHA launched another investigation into a worker fatality at an Amazon warehouse in the New Jersey town of Carteret during the company’s Prime Day shopping event, which turned out to be the biggest in the company’s history. Federal officials haven’t released additional details about the death, but news reports have identified the worker as 42-year-old Rafael Reynaldo Mota Frias.

A spokesperson for Amazon said the company’s internal investigation into the Carteret death shows it “was not a work-related incident, and instead was related to a personal medical condition.”

“OSHA is currently investigating the incident, and, based upon the evidence currently available to us, we fully expect that it will reach the same conclusion,” the spokesperson said.

News of the deaths comes amid broader scrutiny into the company’s operations. In late July, OSHA officials inspected Amazon facilities in New York, Illinois and Florida after receiving referrals alleging health and safety violations from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York. The civil division of the U.S. attorney’s office is also investigating safety hazards at Amazon warehouses and “fraudulent conduct designed to hide injuries from OSHA and others,” according to a spokesperson for the office.

Fire Breaks Out at Jim’s Steaks in South Philadelphia – NBC10 Philadelphia

Lee esta historia en español aquí.

Firefighters were battling a blaze at Jim’s Steaks in South Philadelphia that broke out Friday morning and continued to burn into the afternoon, weaving through the eatery’s HVAC system.

More than 100 firefighters responded to the blaze, but they were having a hard time putting it out because it appeared the flames were difficult to access as they snaked their way through the building’s heating, ventilation and air conditioning system, Philadelphia Fire Department Commissioner Adam Thiel said at a press conference shortly before 2 p.m.

“We’re very concerned about the structural stability of this building. There really is almost no way to assess that,” Thiel said. “So again, we’re taking a defensive posture in an abundance of caution, and we’re hopeful that we’ll be able to preserve as much of the property as possible – at least the building itself.”

Firefighters responded to the eatery on the corner of 4th and South streets after someone reported that some wires had caught fire around 9:15, Thiel said. Smoke could be seen billowing from every floor of the four-story building as firefighters knocked down windows.

The floors on top of the cheesesteak shop, a city staple dating back to the 1930s, were empty and are used for storage, Thiel noted.

A manager at the eatery told NBC10 the air condition had stopped working in the morning and then started smoking. That’s when she said she got everyone out of the building. Everyone was OK, the manager said.

NBC10’s Miguel Martinez-Valle was at the scene and reported shortly after 11 a.m. that firefighters were evacuated from the building and people in the vicinity were told to back up.

Firefighters seemed to be focusing their efforts on an HVAC unit, dousing it with water from above and below. However, Thiel said, crews were not “drowning” the building with water because they believed the fire was in the ducts.

The blaze was contained to the restaurant, but crews were proceeding with caution because of the risk that the building was structurally unstable.

“This is a very challenging incident and right now we’re trying to balance the risk and benefit of our firefighters’ lives and protecting the property here at this iconic building and everywhere that’s attached to it,” Thiel said, referencing an incident in which a firefighter died last month after a building collapsed following another blaze.

Officers Wounded, Masses Scatter After Shooting Near Philadelphia Parkway Concert – NBC10 Philadelphia

Lee esta historia en español aquí.

Police were responding after two officers were shot near the Benjamin Franklin Parkway as thousands of people celebrated a 4th of July concert and fireworks show, multiple sources told NBC10.

One officers sustained a graze wound to the head and the other a gunshot wound to the right shoulder, sources told NBC10’s Rosemary Connors. Both were in stable condition at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, the sources said.

A photo supplied to NBC10 by John McNesby, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge No. 5 union, showed what he said was a bullet lodged in an officer’s cap. Inside the cap was a memorial card for a Philadelphia police chaplain who recently died.

The gunfire broke out around 9:47 p.m. near the Philadelphia Museum of Art on the final day of the Wawa Welcome America festival as throngs of people watched a fireworks show following a concert headlined by Jason Derulo on the parkway, police said.

The shots came from the area near 25th and Spring Garden streets, behind where the concert took place, Connors’ sources said. Various people could be seen running from the area. Police instructed people in surrounding buildings to shelter in place.

“I didn’t hear the shots, but the cops were like, ‘Run, run, run,’” one woman told NBC10.

NBC10 had various reporters in the area covering the festival.

NBC10 reporter Leah Uko reported a “stampede” of people running toward the concert stage. Uko was interviewing a group of teens when an NBC10 cameraman captured the moments people, including various visibly distressed children, began screaming and scattering.

NBC10’s Leah Uko reports on what she experienced as people ran from what multiple sources say was the shooting of two police officers near July 4th festivities in Philadelphia.

She said she helped three people onto the stage and they took cover behind a DJ podium. A man speaking with the director of the show then instructed them to stay there until it was safe enough to “rush back” to their vehicles, Uko said.

NBC10’s Tim Furlong said he saw a “wave of people” running from near Eakins Oval down the parkway. Several children were crying during what were moments of confusion from the crowd and police officers at the scene, Furlong said.

Fellow reporter Karen Hua reported laying in the dirt inside a tent with other people.

“We made a fort around us with catering equipment. Everyone is crying or screaming,” Hua tweeted. “It has just been a night of absolute horror and terror,” Hua said later.

The Philadelphia Police Department instructed those looking to reunite with loved ones to meet at 1901 Vine St. in front of the Free Library of Philadelphia. Anyone else was asked to stay away.

Around 11 p.m., police officers could be seen scouring an area from near 19th Street and the parkway up to Eakins Oval.

Various people sought shelter at the Parke Town Apartments, which are just off the parkway. They asked residents to “stay calm” during police activity “on-site, throughout the community.” All towers of the complex were on lockdown “until we have further information available,” the company said in an email.

Residents were later allowed back in. Police officers at the complex told an NBC10 producer that their search there ended up having nothing to do with the shooting.

Humans Are Making It Harder to Listen for Possible Aliens – NBC10 Philadelphia

A pioneering researcher in the field of astronomy known as SETI, or the search for extraterrestrial intelligence, Dan Werthimer’s work involves scanning the cosmos with huge, ground-based radio telescopes to look for strange or unexplained signals that may have originated from alien civilizations.

In recent years, however, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence has become even more complicated. Increasing demands for mobile services and wireless internet have crowded the radio spectrum, creating interference that can skew data and add “noise” to scientific results.

“Earth is just getting more and more polluted,” said Werthimer, chief technologist at the Berkeley SETI Research Center. “With some radio bands, it’s already impossible to do SETI because they’re so full of television transmitters, WiFI and cellphone bands.”

At its heart, SETI research aims to answer the question: Are we alone in the universe? In the decades since scientists first started listening for alien signals, improvements in telescope technology and data processing have bolstered the search, Werthimer said.

Werthimer was recently one of the authors of a pre-print study led by Chinese researchers that identified a radio signal that several news outlets mistakenly reported as having characteristics of an alien civilization. The signal was actually found to have been radio interference, Werthimer clarified.
