Taylor Swift becomes first musician to claim entire Top 10 on Billboard Hot 100 | Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift scored a 10 out of 10 to become the first artist in history to claim the Top 10 slots on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US, with tracks from her latest album, Midnights.

Billboard reported on Monday that Swift has surpassed Drake, who had held the previous record with nine of the Top 10 songs for a week in September 2021.

“10 out of 10 of the Hot 100??? On my 10th album??? I AM IN SHAMBLES,” the 32-year-old pop star tweeted.

The new album came out on 21 October with both a 13-track standard release and a deluxe version with seven bonus tracks. It has had one of the biggest album launches in nearly seven years. Billboard also reported that Swift now ties with Barbra Streisand for the female artist with the most No 1 albums.

The No 1 spot on the Billboard chart belongs to Anti-Hero, whose lyrics “It’s me/hi/I’m the problem/It’s me” have quickly become a TikTok trend. The other Top 10 songs include Lavender Haze, Maroon, Snow on the Beach, Midnight Rain, Bejeweled and Question … ?

Swift has set a number of new records with Midnights: it had the biggest first week of sales of any album this year, almost doubling the numbers of the previous title-holder, Harry’s House, the third solo album by Harry Styles. Midnights also had the highest first-week streams of the year: 72.5m, again beating Styles’ figures of 53.9m.

On the day of its release, Midnights broke global Spotify records for the most streams of a single album in one day.

Swift has also overtaken Madonna to set a new all-time UK chart record for the fastest succession of nine UK No 1 albums of any female artist – although Madonna still has the record for the most UK No 1 albums of any solo female artist, with 12 overall. Swift is now second in that list, pushing Kylie Minogue into third place.

But despite her success in the UK she won’t be able to replicate her domination of the Billboard Hot 100: after 16 of the 17 songs on Ed Sheeran’s 2017 album, ÷, charted in the Top 20, rules were introduced that mean that only the three most popular songs of any album are now eligible for the UK’s singles chart.

Cormac Roth Dead: Tim Roth’s Son and Musician Was 25

Cormac Roth, a musician and son of actor Tim Roth, died on Oct. 16 after a battle with cancer, the family announced Monday. He was 25.

“He was a wild and electric ball of energy and his spirit was filled with light and goodness,” his family said in a statement. “As wild as he was, Cormac was also the embodiment of kindness. A gentle soul who brought so much happiness and hope to those around him. The grief comes in waves, as do the tears and laughter, when we think of that beautiful boy across the 25 years and 10 months that we knew him. An irrepressible and joyful and wild and wonderful child. Only recently a man. We love him. We will carry him with us wherever we go.”

A graduate of Bennington College, Roth was a talented guitarist, composer and producer. He announced on his Instagram that he had been diagnosed with Stage 3 germ cell cancer in November 2021.

“It has taken away half of my hearing, 60 pounds of weight, my confidence, and will continue its murderous path until I can manage to stop it some how, and kill it,” he wrote. “But it hasn’t taken away my will to survive, or my love of making music. It hasn’t taken me down yet. If you or someone you love is effected by cancer, please feel free to reach out for it is an emotional rollercoaster unlike anything else. Love to you all please make sure to do the things that you love. Life is short. It is chaos. And you never know when it’s going to be you. Be well and go to the doctor. Fuck cancer.”

He is survived by his parents, Tim and Nikki Roth, and his brother, Hunter Roth.

Megan Fox and MGK’s Halloween Costumes Stir Up Controversy Online

Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox channeled their inner Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee this Halloween.

The couple took to their Instagram accounts to share their looks for the Oct. holiday, where they recreated the former couple’s outfits from the 1995 grand opening party for the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.

Fox looked radiant in a two-tone pink and red latex mini-dress with a sweetheart neckline. MGK recreated the Mötley Crüe drummer’s look with a white tank, black leather pants, a sleeve of tattoos, and Lee’s famous black eyeliner and black hair.

“But are these even costumes,” Fox captioned her carousel of photos.

Although the two pulled off the look very well, their posts stirred up a bit of controversy online.

While Fox’s post showed off the photos they recreated from Anderson and Lee, MGK had another idea for his post, and fans were not happy with it.

The third video in the carousel shared by MGK showcased the singer doing a line of cocaine off Fox’s chest. While it is likely fake, fans were extremely unhappy with his choice to post this, as he has young fans who may follow him on social media.

Many fans took to the comments of MGK’s post to express their concerns.

One fan wrote, “Not cool with the snorting and having teens idol you.”

Another fan commented, “Not sure about the “promoting hard drugs” part… It is stupid as hell… Why the f**k would you do this ?”

One fan also wrote, “Him thinking it’s ok to post a video doing a fucking line is crossing a fucking line after every artist we’ve had overdose in the past few years.”

Fans also took to their Twitter accounts to express their concern, with one fan writing, “MGK is wild for recording himself doing a line of coke off Megan Fox’s boob and putting it on his instagram story lol.”

Another addressed the former celebrity couple’s tumultuous and sometimes violent relationship, tweeting, “tommy lee was handcuffed and sent to jail for six months for felony spousal abuse but apparently that’s trendy now, huh,” alongside a snap of MGK and Fox, and singer Jesy Nelson and photographer Noah Sapon recreating the look.

Someone else called the costume a “red flag.”

While MGK or Fox have yet to address the controversy of what looked to be illicit substances in his Instagram Story, MGK has stated in the past that he is steering clear of drugs.

“As I grow, that same person who I was when I was 25 isn’t who I am now,” he said in a 2020 interview with Dave Franco. “Currently, my drug of choice is happiness and commitment to the art, rather than commitment to a vice that I believed made the art. I’m taking steps.”

How a Jazz Musician and Entrepreneur Spends His Sundays

The jazz bass player Matthew Garrison doesn’t like to slow down. “I’m always thinking, doing,” he said.

As a performer, he has toured with Herbie Hancock, and as a producer, he is helping to organize upcoming shows with the pianist Jason Moran, the drummer Jack DeJohnette and others. But most days, he is focused on producing music events through ShapeShifter Lab and its nonprofit arm, ShapeShifter Plus. He also created the app Tunebend, which facilitates virtual collaborating and recording among musicians.

Mr. Garrison, who is the son of Jimmy Garrison, the bassist for John Coltrane, seems to like pushing boundaries in the jazz world. “I’m really tired of the stagnant music scene, where this club only books a certain type of band and that club only books musicians that play this genre,” he said.

For a decade, Mr. Garrison ran a performance space in Gowanus, Brooklyn, also called the ShapeShifter Lab, but it closed last year. Soon, he will open a new venue. “My new space will be a place for performers, those genius rejects, who would not otherwise be able to play in the city.”

Mr. Garrison, 52, lives in Park Slope with his business partner, Fortuna Sung, 51.

DARK AND QUIET Time has been wonky post-pandemic. It sounds horrible, but sometimes I wake up as early as 4 a.m. I get a lot of work out of the way. I code for my apps, including Tunebend, and organize things on my computer for a few hours because everyone is asleep. There’s no one around calling, texting or bugging you.

CAFFEINATED NAP I might have some coffee and a light breakfast. I have a weird relationship with coffee these days. It doesn’t keep me awake. I now use coffee as a sleep aid. I don’t know how that works. So after I work for a few hours and drink some coffee, I often go back to sleep.

WORKING WEEKEND I wake up again around 9 or 10 a.m. and I’ll have another cup of coffee. The music industry is a 24-hour thing. I communicate with folks in Europe and Japan all the time, so my weekends don’t count as a day off. I have to divide my work hours and devote certain days to my three ventures to get everything done. On Sundays, I try to get to the stuff I couldn’t do during the weekday. But I make a mess if I multitask too much.

STEPS Then I might compose for several hours. Or I go take a walk in Prospect Park or zigzag through neighborhood streets. Sometimes I venture out into Gowanus and Carroll Gardens. Fortuna says I walk too fast, but I need to get my heart rate up. My body is telling me I need it.

SONG LAYERS I listen to music on Tunebend while I walk. I listen to see how all the bits and pieces that were recorded can become layers in a song. You can swap out different performers for the same part, so I do a lot of listening and rearranging. But I’m also interacting with the app as a user to see if anything needs to be tweaked. I know it doesn’t seem like it, but this is how I decompress.

PIECING IT TOGETHER When you’re coding or composing music, you’re problem-solving. You’re in continuous research mode to figure out why something is done in a particular way. In the jazz world, there’s so much that you have to know and be able to play in a fraction of a second. In coding, you also have to remember all these bits and pieces to build something. The only difference between the two worlds is the pay!

NEW SPACE I finally got the keys to a new performance space that we’ll open by the end of the year. So far I’ve done a livestream workshop on how to use the Tunebend app, but I’m gearing up for a lot of fund-raising so we can put on shows and events for all types of musicians here.

SUSTENANCE We get our errands done in the neighborhood, including groceries from the Park Slope Food Co-op. Fortuna, whose family is from Hong Kong, is the better cook. Her artist parents also owned and operated a restaurant, so she knows her way around a kitchen. When we eat out, it might be Japanese or Thai. Today we had dinner with my mom at Littleneck.

OLD-PEOPLE TIME After dinner, I’ll watch TV or read. I’m news-centric: There’s so much stuff to keep up with, which makes me understand how I can make this world a better place. I also like tech stuff, like articles about the newest plug-ins for music software. My mom still scolds me that all my reading is done on a screen. Now I’m on old-people time: I’m in bed by 9 or 10 p.m.

Sunday Routine readers can follow Matthew Garrison on Instagram and Twitter @garrisonjazz.

Jack White marries musician Olivia Jean in on-stage surprise | Jack White

Jack White surprised fans by marrying the musician Olivia Jean on stage during his Detroit homecoming show on Friday.

The Detroit-born singer, songwriter and producer invited Jean onstage to join his performance and introduced her as his girlfriend.

White, 46, asked her to marry him during a rendition of song Hotel Yorba and right before the lyric “Let’s get married”.

Jean, 32, a fellow Detroit native, teared up and said yes, the Detroit Free Press reported. White then carried her offstage.

The two re-emerged for an encore and married in an onstage ceremony officiated by Ben Swank, a co-founder of White’s record label.

Jean is part of the label’s garage goth rock band Black Belles, which is on hiatus, and is also signed by the label as a solo artist.

White, who founded the White Stripes, has been married twice. His Friday show was his first solo show in his home town since 2018, and kicked off his Supply Chain Issues Tour and release of his new album Fear of the Dawn.
