  • New Characters – New roster additions are incredibly exciting, so we figured we’d give you a bit of a tease of one of the new characters who will be joining the MultiVersus roster in Season 2! Hailing from the planet Mars and sent to destroy Earth with his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator, Marvin the Martian will soon be making his way to MultiVersus, in yet another fruitless attempt to claim victory. We’ll have more information about Marvin and his kit soon, so hang in there!
  • New Map – Winter is coming… and along with it, a new map! That’s right, in Season 2 we’re introducing an all new Game of Thrones themed map with all the hazards and pitfalls you’d come to expect from the land of Westeros. Soon you’ll be able to hurl your opponents away from the Iron Throne while humming an all-new remix of the awesome Game of Thrones theme music which has been composed with multiple sections that can transition dynamically depending on what mayhem is taking place in the match. When you play the Game of Thrones map, you win or you… fall off the map.
  • Network and Latency Improvements – Since the Open Beta launch, we’ve made many optimizations to MultiVersus to improve performance. We recently implemented multi-path network traffic acceleration to improve stability and latency, which will lead to a much improved online experience for players worldwide. This is just the beginning and we’ll be continuing to invest in and improve in this area. This is a priority for us and the team is hard at work at making the online experience amazing!
  • New Battle Pass – We’re happy to share a little information about our Season 2 Battle Pass which is chock full of new badges, icons/profile icons, banners and taunts for you to unlock and enjoy! Season 2 will boast fun new Character Variants to collect along both the Free and Premium tracks such as Baker Street Tom & Jerry and Astronaut Velma. If Ringouts happen to be your thing, we’re also adding some new additions such as Toxic Explosion and Lava Breath that are sure to demoralize your opponents in the flashiest way possible.

All Star Battle R has surprisingly high sales in the U.S. while MultiVersus falls off the charts completely

And apparently there’s still people who don’t own Smash Ultimate yet

Fighting games can still probably be considered a somewhat niche genre in the grand scheme ofc the industry, but that niche seems to be ever growing with how many more titles that are now topping sales charts consistently.

The NPD Group recently released their September 2022 sales data, which revealed JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle R was among the best-selling games in the United States last month while MultiVersus completely fell off of the rankings.

The JoJo fighting game managed to finish the month in the top 10 overall at number 8, beating out Elden Ring, which is pretty impressive given the slew of other big gaming releases during September like FIFA 23, Splatoon 3 and The Last of Us: Part 1.

For the individual consoles, All Star Battle R charted highly among them all too reaching number 6 on Xbox, 9th on PlayStation and 10th on Nintendo Switch.

Even though the JoJo franchise is probably more popular in the West now than ever before, these results are still pretty surprising considering All Star Battle R is an enhanced re-release of a game that came out almost a decade ago.

It also certainly shows that a fighting game can sell well without rollback netcode in 2022, but we don’t really see All Star Battle being a sustained hit beyond launch.

Without strong online and a lack of wider community push, JJBA:ASBR will likely end up going down the same route as the original release where fans enjoy the fan service for a short while and move on.

Hopefully, these initial strong sales numbers will push Bandai Namco to make a brand new JoJo fighting game in the future to fully capitalize on this global popularity.

As for who isn’t there, MultiVersus failed to chart at all for the month of September, which is a pretty big drop off from its first 2 months — although not inherently bad news in itself.

The new Warner Bros. platform fighter launched as the top game in the U.S. back in July before dropping down to 5th in August.

This was also an impressive feat for the title because the NPD tracks their ranks in terms of dollar sales, so it wasn’t just based on MVS being a free-to-play game

When looking at August’s NPD sales, however, it becomes pretty clear why MultiVersus didn’t make it up there 3 months in a row.

The NPD group apparently only counts sales of MultiVersus through its Founder’s Pack Edition purchases only, so any money spent within the game itself does not get counted towards its performance.

Everything is probably still very much fine for the game considering it broke multiple records upon release. We just won’t know how well it is doing without WB telling us.

What’s perhaps even more impressive than both JoJo and MultiVersus, however, is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s continued sales success, and the game is almost 4 years old now.

Plus, Sora came out as the final character over a year ago already.

Smash Ultimate was still the 4th best-selling Switch title in September and is 17th for the entire year in terms of dollars made for Nintendo.

So don’t expect that 28.8 million copies to stop growing any time soon.

How many people are still actively playing MultiVersus 1 month after its massive launch?

MultiVersus smashed concurrent player records for fighting games upon launch and managed to be the top-earning video game in the United States for July, but the game’s been out just over a month now.

How many people are still actively playing Warner Bros.’ big step into the platform fighting game space now that the initial days and weeks of hype have started to cool off?

While we unfortunately can’t access the player data of console users, Steam Charts thankfully allows us to get an idea of who is sticking around at least on PC / Steam.

We ended up examining MultiVersus’ performance on Steam over its first week after the open beta went live to all compared to this past week, and there’ve been some pretty significant changes.

Even with the release of Morty just days ago, MVS’ daily peaks over the past week averaged around 29,608 users.

That’s still basically double the player count of the second-most popular fighter on Steam, Brawlhalla, but it does not stack up close to when it was breaking records a month ago.

The average MultiVersus peaks over the game’s first week were a whopping 142,920 concurrent players, which means only about 20% of the amount of that crowd are continuing to regularly go online.

Now, big player drops after the first month are expected in any video game that initially peaks at launch. We see it all the time.

It’s just the level of how much MVS did go down that we’re not as much used to seeing.

These comparisons won’t be fully congruent since Steam Charts doesn’t get that granular with data in titles that have been out for months / years, but it’s the best we can do.

Other fighting games like Street Fighter 5 and Guilty Gear Strive both saw a drop of about 50% from their peaks through their second month.

Those titles were full-priced $60 games, however, and MultiVersus is free-to-play and widely available for just about anyone to try — so it makes sense that more people would try MVS out when it was blowing up before dropping off after a few days / weeks.

Brawlhalla, despite being free-to-play as well, isn’t good for comparisons either because that game actually grew larger and larger over time.

We did, however, attempt to draw some similarities between MVS and another f2p cross-platform game with a big initial push, Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel.

From Master Duel’s peak at 262,333 players on Steam through its second month, the game’s average playerbase fell by around 67%.

That’s much closer to what we’re seeing with MVS’ numbers compared to our usual fighting affairs, but there’s still a noticeable gap there (though again that’s comparing weeks to whole months, so it’s not perfect either).

As something of a new beast in the space of fighters, it’s difficult to fully gauge what the current numbers mean about the game’s trajectory.

The fact that MultiVersus is still technically in an open beta state where features of the game aren’t finished throws a wrench in there too.

It’s also important to remember that these figures only account for the Steam users and not those on PlayStation, Xbox or the Epic Games Store.

Even if the playerbases were even with PC on console, that’s still like over 90,000 players going online at the same time each day, which is pretty wild next to what we’re used to for fighting games.

But the numbers are probably even higher than the consoles too.

MultiVersus is certainly in no danger of burning out any time soon, especially considering the game has already crossed 20 million downloads in total.

How the developers continue to handle the first season and eventually move away from open beta will likely have the biggest impact on the game’s performance for the foreseeable future.

They’ve gotten off to a historic start so far, but the true test begins now.

MultiVersus launched as the best-selling video game in the US for July

MultiVersus had a pretty meteoric launch once it finally entered open beta late last month, and the release may have been even better than previously thought.

According to the NPD Group, MultiVersus debuted as the top-selling video game in the United States for the month of July.

Since the NPD Group creates their rankings based on dollars made and not copies sold / downloaded, that also means Warner Bros. new platform fighter saw a substantially large push from Founder’s Pack sales, which range from $40 USD to $100.

MultiVersus was also able to beat out other new releases like Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and Digimon Survive as well as Elden Ring and Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which had been dominating the charts in previous months.

On a console breakdown, the big WB crossover scooped the #1 spot on Xbox and reached #3 on PlayStation.

This was all accomplished in only about 12 days of the month too, considering MVS early access beta didn’t go live until July 19.

Interestingly, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is still continuing its historic charge through the sales by reaching #12 for sales in July and #4 for Nintendo platforms.

MultiVersus isn’t the first time in recent history that a new fighting game has topped NPD charts, as Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Mortal Kombat 11 both did so too.

Considering how both of those games performed afterward, MVS is likely continued strong success in the months to come, but it will be fascinating to see how that ends up playing out now that the game is freely available to all without needing to buy a Founder’s Pack.

Pretty much immediately after the title first launched in early access, it smashed the record for most concurrently played fighting game on Steam, and then broke that record again once the public beta hit, reaching over 144,000 simultaneous users on PC.

Since then, the game has reached at least 10 million downloads, and that number is probably even higher now.

MultiVersus is getting off to one of the strongest starts we’ve ever seen in the genre, and with the Season 1 update now being available, WB and Player First Games are going to need to try carrying that momentum forward.

Multiversus Season 1 Release Date Confirmed

It’s official – MultiVersus Season 1 will launch on August 15, 2022.

A statement via Twitter confirmed the new release date for the Warner Bros. online platform fighter, along with details of a new Battle Pass.

“We’re excited to announce Season 1 will begin on August 15 with a brand-new Battle Pass for you to earn in-game rewards!” the statement reveals. “We can also confirm Morty will join the character roster on August 23 as part of Season 1. We look forward to sharing more in the coming weeks!”

Obviously, the other big news here is that Morty (of Rick & Morty fame) will finally make his way into the game as a playable character on August 23. That’s great news for fans of the show.

But Warner Bros. Games also revealed some further info about Season 1, and it looks as though it won’t just be a single content drop when the game launches. Instead, they’ll be bringing new game modes, etc throughout the first Battle Pass.

“Quick Note: Everything we are bringing to you in Season 1 will not drop on the same day,” they revealed. “New modes and content will be spread through the life of the Season. We’ll continue to share dates on all the fun things to come!”

Now only a few days away, Season 1 can’t come quick enough, and it’s bound to be a huge relief after the game’s launch was recently delayed.

MultiVersus Characters

Although some fans speculated that this could be to do with the Warner Bros. Discovery merger, game director Tony Hyunh was quick to put things straight.

“For those wondering, we are unaffected by the Discovery/Warner Bros. merger,” he said.

And with a player base soon surpassing 10 million players, it looks as though most fans weren’t put off.

MultiVersus season 1 kicks off August 15th after a short delay

The first season of MultiVersus, Warner Bros.’ free-to-play take on a Super Smash Bros.-esque crossover fighter, will now begin on August 15th, developer Player First Games tweeted Thursday evening. The season had been scheduled to kick off on August 9th, but the studio announced last week that the launch had been delayed.

Alongside the news of the season start date, Player First Games announced that Morty from Rick and Morty will be joining the MultiVersus roster on August 23rd; his arrival had been pushed back last week as well. Player First Games also committed to adding “new modes and content” over the course of the season. Ahead of the season 1 delay, the Rick half of Rick and Morty was planned to be added sometime during the season, but it’s unclear if that’s still the case.

MultiVersus launched in open beta in July. Rick and Morty will join an already packed roster that includes characters like Bugs Bunny, Harley Quinn, Arya Stark, the Iron Giant, and LeBron James. The game is available on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.

MultiVersus announces new costumes, modes and more coming to Season 1 including LeBron James as Robin

Bugs gets to be a Valkyrie too

After what appeared to be a very successful open beta launch, Warner Bros. made the surprise announcement that they were delaying the release of the game’s Season 1 content earlier this week, but now we can get a taste of what exactly the first big update will entail.

During their Evo 2022 side tournament, MultiVersus showed off the new modes, costumes and more that’ll be coming alongside Rick & Morty in Season 1’s roadmap.

It’s not confirmed as of yet if these are the only new pieces of content on the way, but WB revealed a Robin costume for LeBron James and Valkyrie Brünnhilde for Bugs Bunny plus additional banners and icons.

Competitive players will also be happy to learn that Ranked Mode is officially dropping in Season 1, and there’s a Classic Arcade Mode on the way too — but what that entails hasn’t been shown yet.

Season 1 for MVS was originally supposed to launch sometime this month in August with new character Rick, but the developers promise an update of when the update is dropping “very soon.”

That may be as soon as the end of the Evo tournament for MultiVersus tonight, so we’ll update this story if / when more information is revealed.

2 MultiVersus Fighters Banned from Evo 2022

MultiVersus players looking to get a better look at what which characters pro fighting game players prefer and how they use them can get that this weekend during the Evo 2022 MultiVersus tournament, but two characters won’t be featured in the fights. Both the Iron Giant and LeBron James – the latter being the first character released after the start of the open beta – are not playable during Evo 2022. A map has similarly been struck from the rotation for the duration of the tournament.

The two fighters weren’t restricted from the tournament because they were overpowered or unfair or anything like that, though depending on which MultiVersus players you ask, some might hold those opinions about the pair. Instead, they were banned from the tournament because these two characters are the only ones labeled as “experimental” when you’re viewing them in the roster. The same goes for the Cromulons stage that comes from Rick and Morty and was added not long ago.

In the official rules for this MultiVersus tournament, the guidelines specified from the start that both of these characters (and any other new ones should Warner Bros. release a surprise drop ahead of schedule) were restricted from the event.

“Iron Giant, LeBron James, or any other characters released after the start of Open Beta will not be allowed in the Evo 2022 MultiVersus Open Beta Tournament,” the rules said. “This is subject to change at the sole discretion of Warner Bros. and Player First Games.”

Aside from those restrictions, the tournament seems to be operating off of pretty standard rules and is being played in a 2v2 format. It started just yesterday and is underway once more again now on Saturday, so it’ll be interesting to see once things have wrapped up which characters proved to be the most possible throughout the competition. A quick look at the MultiVersus Twitter account for the game’s competitive scene shows that there’s at least a range of characters being played instead of just a few being spammed over and over again, though some like Batman and Bugs Bunny are certainly seen frequently enough.

Video: Digital Foundry’s Smash Bros. Ultimate VS MultiVersus Comparison

There have been a lot of brawlers ‘inspired’ by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, and the latest one to arrive on the scene is the Warner Bros. title MultiVersus – featuring iconic heroes and cartoon characters like Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Bugs Bunny and Tom & Jerry.

The tech experts over at Digital Foundry couldn’t resist and have decided to do a video comparison to see how this new game holds up against Masahiro Sakurai’s masterpiece. It’s already got a tremendous uphill battle on its hands considering how much Smash Bros. has been fine-tuned over the years, but can it actually compete?

Digital Foundry notes how the combat naturally borrows a lot of ideas from the Smash Bros. moveset, but the mechanics and flow of combat aren’t “quite as tight” as Smash Bros. It’s also apparently missing the on-screen visual cues and sounds that have been perhaps overlooked. Across the board – the game runs at 60 fps matching Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s performance.

There are plenty more comparisons throughout – with DF getting into a more detailed breakdown around the 10 minute mark, so feel free to take a look if you have been wondering how this Smash Bros. contender holds up. You can learn more over on our sister site Push Square:

And if you’re wondering, this free-to-play title is seemingly skipping a Switch release. There are plenty of alternatives to Super Smash Bros. on the Switch though like Brawlhalla and Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl.

What do you think of this latest Smash rival? Have you tried it out? Are you still playing Smash Bros. on Switch? Leave your thoughts down below.

MultiVersus Has Insanely Low Input Latency on PS5

Earlier in the year, fighting game tournament EVO, game engine maker Epic Games, and platform holder Sony all confirmed that they’re collaborating on an issue regarding input latency with the Unreal Engine on the PS5. It’s all been a bit awkward for PlayStation: while it’s marketing its PS5 console as an esports machine, it’s often posted the worst response times in competitive fighting games.

Well, the good news is that early analysis of Unreal Engine fighter MultiVersus is extremely positive. The native PS5 version has the fastest response time at 1080p across all consoles, suggesting that the aforementioned trio may have happened upon a fix. In fact, at just 31.47 milliseconds, the PS5’s response time is around about two frames – minuscule stuff.

Now this is important because professional players rely on rapid response times, and as Sony is a co-owner of the EVO championships, it ultimately wants players to be competing on its consoles. We’ll obviously need to await further analysis and more examples to declare this issue officially “fixed” – but these are reassuring results, without a doubt.
