John Mulaney’s Show Had Dave Chappelle Telling Transphobic Jokes

During a Friday performance on his “From Scratch” tour, comedian John Mulaney surprised his audience — and drew criticism from some fans — when Dave Chappelle appeared as the opener and told transphobic jokes.

Chappelle’s opening set occurred during a show at Ohio State University’s Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Although there is no footage from the event, as attendees were required to lock their phones up beforehand, several audience members took to social media afterwards to criticize the show. According to attendees, Chappelle appeared as a surprise opener, and told jokes targeting the transgender community. Mulaney reportedly came onstage and hugged Chappelle at the conclusion of the opening set. Some fans in the crowd expressed their disappointment after the show on Twitter:

Jokes about the transgender community have been a recent cornerstone of Chappelle’s stand-up. The comedian first drew controversy for anti-trans jokes in Netflix specials such as 2019’s “Sticks and Stones” and the 2021 special “The Closer.” “The Closer,” in particular, faced blowback from groups such as GLAAD and the National Black Justice Coalition for derogatory jokes Chappelle made about trans women, as well as extended bits where he defended previous anti-trans statements from rapper DaBaby and “Harry Potter” author J.K. Rowling. Earlier this month, after being tackled while performing at a Netflix is a Joke event, Chappelle drew further controversy when he joked that the assailant was a trans man.

Chappelle’s controversial and derogatory statements stand in contrast to Mulaney’s largely uncontroversial material. In his standup, Mulaney tends to stay away from political or social issues, focusing his attention on self-deprecating humor, anecdotes about his personal life and his struggles with alcoholism and addiction.

After Mulaney began trending on Twitter the next day as a result of the surprise Chappelle set, comedians started to react in turn.

Representatives of Mulaney and Chapelle did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Conan O’Brien, Paul Rudd, Steve Martin, Tina Fey, Candice Bergen & Elliott Gould Crash John Mulaney’s Five-Timers Celebration

“What we’re all trying to say is that this has become not special,” Steve Martin told John Mulaney during his SNL Five Timers club initiation.

“Did somebody say not special?” said Conan O’Brien as he burst through the door in echoes of his last Emmy appearance.

More from Deadline

The former Tonight Show host was one of a number of five-timers helping to congratulate Mulaney for joining the club – he was joined by Steve Martin, Paul Rudd, Candice Bergen, Tina Fey and Elliott Gould.

“John, don’t listen to them, this is very, very special. I was in the very first five-timers special,” added a slightly flubby O’Brien, pointing out that he and Mulaney were only ever writers, rather than performers, on the NBC show. “John and I were never supposed to be on TV, we’re hideous.”

Bergen, who hosted five times between 1975 and 1990, congratulated Mulaney, who first hosted in 2018. “Let me be the first person to say ‘who are you’?,” she said. Replied Mulaney: “You wouldn’t know me but if you have a niece or a son who’s bad at sports, they might.”

Fey returned to the show with a drink, a Five Timers Fizz, which she said consisted of “Justin Timberlake’s tequila, Dan Aykroyd’s vodka, and Tracy Morgan’s club soda, which is aquarium water.” She pointed out that Mulaney wrote “that character with Bill Hader and 800 other things that aged terribly.”

The group was slightly concerned that the number of hosts joining the five-timers club was getting a bit too big. “In order for you to get in, someone has to retire,” posited Bergen.

Martin said that they couldn’t get rid of Fey as “she was the first woman ever to wear glasses on TV.” Fey said that they couldn’t get rid of Bergen as she was “back here in the ’70s, can you imagine the sexual harassment that happened back then?”

It was left to Rudd, whose own five timers celebration was cut slightly short last year due to Covid, to give Mulaney his jacket even though his show was “going to be a lot better until the whole cast decided to call in sick.”

We’re Swooning Over This Pic of Pete Davidson With John Mulaney’s Baby

Uncle Pete is in the building!

After spending time with new flame Kim Kardashian during his latest trip to Los Angeles, it seems Pete Davidson has also made time for a fellow Saturday Night Live star.

Pete recently hung out with John Mulaney and met his new baby, Malcolm, as seen in an adorable video that John shared to his Instagram Story on Friday, Jan. 28.

The footage shows “Uncle Pete” meeting John’s 2-month-old son, who he shares with actress Olivia Munn. Dressed in a grey hoodie and blue pants, Pete was pictured cradling Malcolm on the couch, clutching the newborn’s little fingers and squealing, “Aww!”

“Yeah, babies are all head,” Pete said to laughs from others in the room. The Big Time Adolescence actor then smiled to reveal an apparent chipped tooth, adding, “They’re, like, all head.”

Their sweet moment was set to the tune of “F.U.N. Song” from SpongeBob SquarePants, with the lyrics, “F is for friends who do stuff together/ U is for you and me/ N is for anywhere and anytime at all/ Down here in the deep blue sea!”

TMZ broke the news on Thursday, citing a legal filing.

The divorce was finalized in New York City, according to the outlet.

John and Anna Marie married in July 2014.

The couple called it quits in October 2020 – two months before John checked into rehab voluntarily.

They had no children together.

It’s unclear, according to TMZ’s reporting, whether a prenup was involved.

Although the couple’s marriage only legally ended on Thursday, they have been done for several months.

MOVING ON

Shortly after he and Anna Marie announced their split, John was linked to Olivia Munn.

He confirmed their relationship during a television appearance in September, announcing that she was pregnant with his child.

John revealed during the appearance: “In the spring, I went to Los Angeles, and met and started to date a wonderful woman named Olivia – Olivia Munn.

“And we’re having a baby together…I’m going to be a dad. We’re both really, really happy.”

TMZ exclusively confirmed that Olivia gave birth to their son, Malcom Hiêp Mulaney, on November 24.

The baby is a first for both John and Olivia.

MARRIAGE OVER

John checked into a rehab facility in Pennsylvania for 60 days of treatment in December 2020.

He was treated for an addiction to cocaine and alcohol.

After his stint in rehab, Page Six reported that John asked his wife for a divorce.

While he made the request in February, he didn’t officially file until July.

Anna released a statement via a spokesperson, saying: “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage.

“I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”

JOHN’S STRUGGLES

John was open with fans about his struggles with addiction.

He said at the time: “I didn’t want an intervention. At that moment in time, I wanted to continue using drugs.

“Sitting here tonight, I’m so grateful to you and to everyone there for saving my life.

“You guys saved me from drugs and Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself and this early journey of recovery. I don’t have a joke for that.”
