MSNBC’s Chris Hayes frets his ‘worst fears’ have been realized since Musk acquired Twitter

In a New York Times guest essay, MSNBC anchor Chris Hayes claimed that “in under a month” all of his “worst fears have been realized” in regard to how new Twitter owner Elon Musk has run his new social media platform.

Hayes claimed that Musk “courted some of the worst trolls” on Twitter, has scared off advertisers and cut staff that handle the basic functions of the platforms.

Hayes also expressed worry that under Musk, the platform may “break down and stop working altogether.”

Hayes began his guest essay by describing Musk’s handling of Twitter as a “near-death experience,” if not the end of it entirely. He wrote, “If Twitter survives — and I fervently hope it does — its near-death experience has revealed something fundamental about our online lives: the digital spaces of civic life, the ‘public town square’ as Mr. Musk deemed Twitter, have been privatized, to our collective detriment.”

He criticized the world’s richest man for taking the company private, contrary to the wishes of its previous owner, Jack Dorsey. He said, “Before Mr. Musk bought Twitter, its co-founder and former C.E.O. Jack Dorsey said of the platform that no one should own it, that it ‘wants to be a public good at a protocol level.’”

He continued by praising Twitter prior to Musk as “an arena where something akin to the global conversation was taking place.” He added, “it came closest to executing on the core vision of what the global town square could look like.”

He continued, “That’s why there was so much apprehension when Mr. Musk bought the site: No one man should have all that power.”

Hayes then provided a blistering condemnation of Musk’s handling of the platform. He wrote, “In under a month, almost all of the worst fears have manifested.” Listing them, he said, “He has solicitously courted some of the worst trolls, sent advertisers fleeing in droves and cut the staff down so radically that simple functions like two-factor authentication have at times stopped working and there’s a risk it will simply break down and stop working altogether.”

Hayes then gave a dismissive description of why Musk bought the platform, writing, “Mr. Musk bought Twitter because he’s a Twitter addict and, more specifically, an extremely online attention addict.”

Hayes continued denigrating the billionaire, stating, “This is someone with millions of followers who is deep in the bowels of his own replies and mentions, clearly spending inordinate amounts of time looking at what people are saying about him.”

He added, “I can tell you from experience that this is a path to madness — though it’s a path that the design of Twitter and other social networks guides you gently down.”

Hayes claimed that after Musk’s purchase, “the site felt like a family saying its goodbyes to a beloved but deeply problematic uncle.” He also accused Musk of “making the most expensive impulse purchase in human history.”

“It’s fitting, in its own chaotic way,” he declared.

He concluded his essay on a negative note, “The world’s most successful capitalist, by at least one measure, has made the most definitive case for rejecting private ownership of the public sphere that we’ve seen in a very long time.” He then mocked Musk, using his own catchphrase: “Let that sink in.”

MSNBC’s Stephanie Ruhle rips Dollar Tree for blaming price hikes on inflation: They don’t ‘NEED’ to do this

MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle is taking Dollar Tree to task over its shocking announcement that the company was increasing its famously cheap prices.

Dollar Tree confirmed this week it is charging $1.25 for the majority of its products at all of its locations nationwide by the end of April.

MSNBC ANCHOR STEPHANIE RUHLE ARGUES AMERICANS CAN AFFORD EXPENSIVE GROCERIES, IS DUBBED ‘STEPHANIE ANTOINETTE’

“For 35 years, Dollar Tree has managed through inflationary periods to maintain the everything-for-one-dollar philosophy that distinguished Dollar Tree and made it one of the most successful retail concepts for three decades,” the company said in a press release on Tuesday. “However, as detailed in its September announcement, the Company believes this is the appropriate time to shift away from the constraints of the $1.00 price point in order to continue offering extreme value to customers. This decision is permanent and is not a reaction to short-term or transitory market conditions.”

In a statement, Dollar Tree executive Michael Witynski said the change would give the company “greater flexibility to manage the overall business, especially in a volatile, inflationary environment.”

Ruhle, however, isn’t buying the suggestion that the current inflation conditions play a role in the price hikes.

“Let’s be clear, Dollar Tree does not NEED to raise prices,” Ruhle tweeted Wednesday. “Their biz is KILLIN it- $1,230,000,000 in profits CEO pay $10MM.”

“DollarTree is raising prices because they CAN- not bc they need to. It is a choice of how to share the benefits of their scale To customers? To employees? To shareholders? To mgmt?” she added.

MSNBC HOSTS SUGGESTS DEMOCRATS HAVE A ‘GREAT ECONOMIC STORY’

Ruhle also wrote, “Just bc input costs go up…that does NOT mean a business must raise prices to customers. It is not automatic.”

Responding to a Twitter user who suggested he doesn’t blame companies like Dollar Tree for passing on the costs since they “aren’t a charity,” Ruhle replied, “Stock price it at an all-time-high. Demand is super strong Biz is GROWING It is not a charity – nowhere near a charity. It’s a biz & businesses decide what their priorities are.”

The MSNBC anchor has long downplayed the impact of inflation. Earlier this month, she claimed the “dirty little secret” was that “while nobody likes to pay more, on average, we have the money to do so,” adding, “Household savings hit a record high over the pandemic, we didn’t really have anywhere to go out and spend.”

In May, Ruhle scolded businesses to raise wages following a disappointing jobs report that reflected poorly on the Biden administration.

MSNBC’S RUHLE RIPPED FOR SCOLDING BUSINESSES TO RAISE WAGES AFTER POOR JOBS REPORT: ‘NEVER RUN A BUSINESS’

Ruhle recently claimed Democrats have a ‘great economic story to tell’ despite growing inflation.

“Five million jobs created, 200 million people vaccinated. Those vaccine numbers tie directly to the economy. You couldn’t open the economy without getting America healthy again. We are seeing economic recovery. What the Biden administration isn’t doing is selling that, and they can,” Ruhle told NBC colleague Chuck Todd.

Dollar Tree says the move to $1.25 will allow it to “materially expand its offerings, introduce new products and sizes, and provide families with more of their daily essentials.” Additionally, the company emphasizes that it will be able to reintroduce items that were previously discontinued due to the constraints of the $1 price point.

The discount retailer plans to roll out the new price points at more than 2,000 additional legacy stores in December as part of an initiative to mitigate rising freight, distribution and operating costs.

MSNBC’s Joy Reid blasts Minaj over anti-vaccine tweet

MSNBC host Joy Reid blasted rapper Nicki Minaj after the artist tweeted that she has decided not to get vaccinated despite contracting COVID-19 and advocated against inoculation.

“You have a platform, sister, that is 22 million followers,” Reid said Monday during a discussion on her program about vaccine mandates and misinformation. “I have 2 million followers … you have 22 million followers on Twitter. For you to use your platform to encourage our community to not protect themselves and save their lives … my God sister, you could do better than that.”

Reid added Minaj’s massive following stemming from her music career is “a blessing,” telling the hip-hop star that “people listen to you more than they listen to me.”

“For you to use your platform to put people in the position of dying from a disease they don’t have to die from, oh my God,” Reid continued. “As a fan, as a hip-hop fan and as somebody who is your fan, I am so sad that you did that, sister. Oh my God.”

Minaj, in a series of tweets earlier on Monday, revealed she contracted the coronavirus while prepping for the MTV Video Music Awards.

“Do u know what it is not to be able to kiss or hold your tiny baby for over a week? A baby who is only used to his mama?” Minaj said in one tweet.

In another widely shared tweet, Minaj said that her cousin’s account of his friend getting vaccinated had also influenced her decision to not get inoculated.

“My cousin in Trinidad won’t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen. His friend was weeks away from getting married, now the girl called off the wedding. So just pray on it & make sure you’re comfortable with ur decision, not bullied,” she said.

The rapper, who attacked several prominent figures in media who had criticized her tweets, responded to Reid’s comments on Monday evening.

“This is what happens when you’re so thirsty to down another black woman (by the request of the white man), that you didn’t bother to read all my tweets. ‘My God SISTER do better’ imagine getting ur dumb ass on tv a min after a tweet to spread a false narrative about a black woman,” Minaj said, making reference in a subsequent tweet to a 2018 incident in which Reid was accused of writing homophobic blog posts.
