Colorado-Arizona State game won’t be moved to Week 0 after wavier denied by NCAA: Source

There will not be a Week 0 college football game between Colorado and Arizona State to open the 2023 season, an administrative source involved in the process confirmed to The Athletic on Wednesday. The news comes two days after ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit suggested during the broadcast of the national championship game that the Week 0 game would take place.

“(Deion Sanders) was on GameDay with us and he actually gave us some news … breaking news, from Prime,” Herbstreit said on Monday night’s broadcast, according to 247Sports. “They’re actually not going to be opening up with (TCU). Colorado’s going to open up with Arizona State in their first game, and then they’re going to play TCU in their second game. Looks like they’re sneaking around there a little bit, but that was just told to me from Coach Prime tonight.”

Those comments turned out to be a bit premature. The Pac-12 had requested a waiver for the teams to play in Week 0 in order to avoid a team or teams having to play nine consecutive weeks in the regular season, the source said. NCAA staff made the decision to deny the waiver with input from the Football Oversight Committee (FOC). The FOC pointed out that several teams play nine consecutive weeks in the regular season and that the Pac-12’s case did not warrant special consideration. Typically, teams that play in Week 0 have extenuating circumstances. For example, anyone who plays Hawaii is able to play in Week 0 to help space out their schedule with an extra idle week.

More waivers for Week 0 are denied than are granted, the source also pointed out.

Wednesday’s news comes amid a broader conversation around college football’s calendar. The FOC and a specially formed 365-day working group have been looking at how to best structure the sport’s season and offseason. It is very possible that college football’s leaders decide to move the start of the season up to the current Week 0 for all teams to alleviate the stress on the back end of the calendar, especially with additional games in a 12-team College Football Playoff. But for now, teams still need waivers to play the weekend before Labor Day weekend.

Football legend Pele ‘is moved to palliative care’ in hospital

Brazilian football legend Pele ‘has been moved to palliative care’ in hospital and is ‘no longer responding to chemotherapy’ in his fight against bowel cancer.

Reports in Brazil said the 82-year-old, who went into hospital last week, is receiving measures to relieve pain in an ‘end-of life palliative care’ ward.

His former club Santos and the France international forward Kylian Mbappe were among those tweeting good wishes, joining fans around the world.

He was admitted into the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo, Brazil on Tuesday suffering from ‘general swelling’ and ‘heart failure’.

An update on Thursday said the three-time World Cup winner was in a ‘stable’ condition in the hospital with his daughter Kely insisting there was ‘no cause for alarm’.

However, a report by Folha de Sao Paulo on Saturday, said Pele isn’t responding any longer to the chemotherapy treatment he has been undergoing since last September to treat his bowel cancer.

They said he is now in palliative care and won’t be subjected to invasive tests or treatment. Palliative care is for patients with potentially life-threatening diseases or conditions and end-of-life care.

Pele – whose full name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento – is regarded by many as the greatest footballer of all time.

He won three World Cups with Brazil in 1958, 1962 and 1970, and scored 643 goals in 659 official matches for the Brazilian club Santos. He scored 77 times in 92 games for his country’s national team.

On Friday, the Albert Einstein Hospital released a statement saying Pele had been diagnosed with a ‘respiratory infection’ that was being treated with antibiotics.

The update said the former player is expected to remain in hospital for continued treatment in the coming days but said his condition was ‘stable’.

In a post on Pele’s Instagram account on Friday, he responded to a ‘Get well soon’ message that was projected onto a building in Qatar, where the World Cup is taking place.

He wrote: ‘Friends, I am at the hospital making my monthly visit. It’s always nice to receive positive messages like this. Thanks to Qatar for this tribute, and to everyone who sends me good vibes.’

What is palliative care?

Pele has been moved to palliative care in hospital, according to reports in Brazil.

The aim of such treatment is to prevent and relieve suffering for those patients who are facing life-threatening illness.

Also known as ‘end of life care’, it is for people believed to be in the last months or years of their lives and also provides support to their families.

The NHS website says: ‘If you have an illness that cannot be cured, palliative care makes you as comfortable as possible by managing your pain and other distressing symptoms.

‘It also involved psychological, social and spiritual support for you and your family or carers.

‘Palliative care is available when you first learn you have a life-limiting (terminal) illness. You might be able to receive palliative care while you are still receiving other therapies to treat your conditions.

‘End of life care is a form of palliative care you receive when you’re close to the end of life.’

Pele recorded a video for Instagram on his 82nd birthday back on October 23 and accompanied it with the message: ‘On my birthday, I just want to express my gratitude. Life is good. Turning 82 with my family, in good health, is the best gift. Thank you for everything I have received.’

The Thursday update from the hospital had said Pele was in a ‘stable condition’ and ‘in full control of vital functions’ having not been admitted to an Intensive Care United [ICU].

A statement issued to the Brazilian media said: ‘After medical evaluation, the patient was taken to a common room, without the need for hospitalisation in a semi-intensive unit or ICU.

‘The former player is in full control of vital function and [in a] stable clinical condition.’

The hospital confirmed Pele had been taken into hospital ‘for a reassessment of the chemotherapy treatment of the colon tumour identified in September 2021.’

Concerned fans around the world said their thoughts and prayers were with the legend

There is no time frame on Pele’s hospital stay, and his wife Marcia Aoki and carer are by his bedside.

However, Pele’s daughter Kely Nascimento, who is not in Brazil, had insisted on Tuesday that there was no need for alarm and that her father’s hospital admission is ‘no surprise or emergency’.

She posted on Instagram: ‘Lots of alarm in the media today concerning my dad’s health. He is in the hospital regulating medication.

‘There is no emergency or new dire prediction. I will be there for New Year’s and promise to post some pictures.’

Pele was hospitalised for six days last year and underwent surgery to remove a tumour in his colon. The Globo news site in Brazil said Pele was undergoing routine examinations in Sao Paulo’s Albert Einstein Hospital when the undisclosed issue was detected.

It came as Brazil fans unfurled a ‘Get well soon Pele’ banner ahead of their final World Cup group match against Cameroon on Friday night.

There had also been heartfelt tributes from with the Brazil camp ahead of the game.

‘We found out the news on Wednesday,’ coach Tite said ahead of the Cameroon game.

‘He is possibly one of the biggest representatives of Brazil. We wish him good health. That’s the feeling of all of us from the Brazil squad. We are wishing Pele all the best.’

Tite and his Brazil squad sent national hero Pele a message of support on Thursday

Pele has been battling bowel cancer since he was diagnosed with a tumour in his large intestine at the end of August 2021. He was undergoing routine examinations which were delayed a year because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Four days later, he underwent surgery at the Albert Einstein hospital to remove the tumour and was taken into an ICU unit several times because of respiratory issues.

He started a course of chemotherapy shortly afterwards and in December 2021, was taken back into hospital for more cancer-beating treatment. He was discharged just before Christmas.

Pele went back into hospital for another course of chemotherapy in February, joking on social media that ‘hopefully there’s popcorn to watch the Super Bowl soon’.

When doctors discovered a urinary tract infection, his stay in hospital was extended but Pele was discharged on February 28.

The octogenarian has also struggled with his mobility in recent years after three hip operations.

Ships linked to Russia’s biggest grain exporter moved stolen Ukrainian cargo

Vessels linked to Russia’s largest grain trader shipped thousands of tons of stolen Ukrainian grain to global buyers, using a sophisticated system of feeder vessels and floating cranes, according to an investigation by The Wall Street Journal.

The ships are linked either through their management or ownership to companies controlled by Russian businessman Peter Khodykin, who in turn owns RIF Trading House LLC, the country’s largest grain exporter and a big player in global grain markets, according to corporate and legal documents reviewed by the Journal.

The Journal has previously reported widespread theft of grain and land in Russian-occupied Ukraine, including detailing an intricate system by which smugglers clandestinely trucked out large amounts of stolen grain from newly occupied farms in eastern Ukraine to Crimea, which Russia annexed in 2014.

The Eaubonne bulk carrier ship docks in the port of Mombasa, Kenya Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022. The vessel arrived with 53,300 tons of wheat for commercial use in Kenya and procured under the Black Sea Grain Initiative, a deal to ease the export of Ukrai (AP Newsroom)

The next step in the smuggling process: moving that stolen Ukrainian grain from Crimea to global buyers. A fleet of small vessels ferry smuggled grain, typically from the Crimean port of Sevastopol, to larger cargo ships waiting at sea, where they transfer their cargo with the help of crane-equipped vessels, according to the Journal’s investigation. Those larger ships then set sail for far-flung ports.

Such at-sea transfers can hide the true provenance of the ships’ cargoes, which buyers might shun if they suspected the grain came from Russia-occupied eastern Ukraine. The transfers allow big container ships, which can be easily recognized in port or from satellite imagery, to avoid calling at Sevastopol. Sometimes the stolen Ukrainian grain is mixed with Russian grain, to further disguise the cargo’s origins.

“It’s wheat laundering,” said Yoruk Isik, head of the Istanbul-based Bosphorus Observer, an independent ship-tracking consulting firm. “They made it really hard to track.”

June 11: A few days later, Petra II, a crane ship, is captured by satellite imagery sandwiched between the Emmakris II and a different feeder ship. Ukrainian intelligence and maritime experts say it was loading grain at sea.

June 14: Ship-tracking data and satellite imagery show the M. Andreev, the Emmakris II and the Petra II operating in the vicinity of the Kerch Strait. Ukraine intelligence say the M. Andreev was loaded with barley from Sevastopol.

Sept. 4: The Emmakris II lists its intended port of destination in Iraq, after sailing from the Kerch Strait through the Bosporus and Suez Canal. It never recorded a port call.

Ukrainian authorities and maritime and grain-market analysts have identified Sevastopol as a key entrepôt for stolen grain brought in by truck or rail from eastern Ukraine. Sevastopol shipped about 848,400 tons of grains, such as wheat and barley, from the beginning of March through October, nearly 15 times as much as the same period last year, according to Geneva-based researcher AgFlow.

Left to right; Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania Ingrida Simonyte, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Hungarian President Katalin Novak and Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki attend a (AP Newsroom)

In one such at-sea transfer of cargo coming from the port this summer, a crane ship managed and owned by companies linked to Mr. Khodykin loaded a large cargo ship—also managed and owned by the same companies—with grain near the Kerch Strait, a narrow waterway connecting the Black Sea and the Azov Sea, according to Ukrainian intelligence reports, satellite imagery, shipping data and maritime analysts.

Mr. Isik’s Bosphorus Observer helped identify some of the ships involved in Kerch Strait smuggling by matching verified photos and video with satellite imagery, using characteristics such as the placement of cranes and hatches on the ships. The Initiative for the Study of Russian Piracy, a Washington-based group of researchers and former U.S. officials funded by a Ukrainian industrial group, also provided ship-tracking data and corporate documentation. The data and documents were corroborated by the Journal.

Mr. Khodykin couldn’t be reached for comment. RIF said it has nothing to do with Ukrainian grain theft. “We value our reputation and comply with the legislation of the Russian Federation and all international rules,” the company said via email. RIF said that it carefully checks the origin of all its cargoes. Russian officials have also denied the theft of Ukrainian grain.

RIF, based in the city of Rostov-on-Don on the Azov Sea, is Russia’s largest exporter of grain, according to the country’s main grain trade body. According to Russian corporate documents dated as recently as April this year, Mr. Khodykin is RIF’s owner.

From April to September, Sevastopol shipped 662,000 tons of grain, compared with 36,000 tons the year before, according to AgFlow. Companies controlled by or benefiting Mr. Khodykin were involved in about a third of this year’s excess exports, according to ISRP researchers. That estimate took into account ISRP-tracked bulk carriers, tugboats, cranes and other auxiliary ships owned or managed by companies linked to Mr. Khodykin that either delivered grain or assisted in transshipments.

For instance, on June 14, the Russian-flagged M. Andreev, a small feeder ship, arrived in the vicinity of the Kerch Strait, loaded with barley from Sevastopol, according to a Ukrainian intelligence document. Near the strait, it came alongside the Panama-flagged Emmakris II, which had arrived earlier in the month, according to ship-tracking data from Spire Global.

The Emmakris II has been managed since 2020 by Dubai-based MCF Shipping DMCC, according to Equasis, a shipping database. It is listed as owned by an affiliate of MCF Shipping. MCF Shipping, in turn, shares a corporate website registrant and administrator with GTCS Trading DMCC, another Dubai company that a 2019 Moscow arbitration court document identified as being beneficially owned by RIF’s Mr. Khodykin. The company also goes by GTCS Trading JLT.

MCF Shipping is located in a Dubai office building next to GTCS Trading. Employees of the two companies say on their LinkedIn profiles that they work for both companies. One employee of GTCS reached by phone by the Journal said the two companies were the same. GTCS was also the majority owner of RIF until April this year, when ownership changed to Mr. Khodykin, according to a database that aggregates information about Russian companies.

On June 15, both ships, the Emmakris II and the M. Andreev, appeared on ship-tracking sites next to each other, along with another ship with a mounted crane. The three ships were nestled together for more than seven hours, according to ship-tracking data and a Ukrainian intelligence document, which said the M. Andreev offloaded its grain at this point.

The crane ship, Petra II, is also managed by MCF Shipping, the Dubai-based company linked to Mr. Khodykin, according to the Equasis shipping database. It is owned by an affiliate of MCF Shipping.

The flotilla was joined by two more feeder ships, this time arriving from Russia. They moored alongside the Emmakris II, according to satellite images from Planet Labs PBC that were reviewed by the Journal. Ukrainian officials say Russia mixes Russian grain with stolen Ukrainian grain to make it harder to track.

Emmakris II then got under way, moving first into the Black Sea and then through the Bosporus on July 10, according to ship-tracking data from Spire Global.

The ship then sailed to the Persian Gulf, where its tracking transponder stopped transmitting, making it invisible to ship trackers. When the ship reappeared on Sept. 4, it listed its destination as Umm Qasr, Iraq. The ship never recorded a port call in Iraq, however, according to ship-tracking data. Its final destination on that voyage couldn’t be determined.

Since September, the Emmakris II has made two more trips through the Black Sea to the Kerch Strait, according to ship-tracking data. The ship returned to the Persian Gulf on the first of those trips. The ship left the Black Sea again earlier in November and transited the Suez Canal on its way to the Red Sea.

Nets’ Kyrie Irving says he’s ‘not antisemitic’ and ‘should’ve just answered the questions and just moved on’

In his first interview since the Brooklyn Nets suspended him, Nets guard Kyrie Irving told SNY’s Ian Begley on Saturday that he “should’ve just answered the questions and just moved on” in two contentious press conferences after he publicized a documentary full of antisemitic conspiracy theories on social media. Irving said that he “meant no harm” by his initial posts on Twitter and Instagram, and repeatedly referenced his upbringing in West Orange, New Jersey.

“I really want to focus on the hurt that I caused or the impact that I made within the Jewish community, putting some type of threat or assumed threat on the Jewish community,” Irving told SNY. “I just want to apologize deeply for all my actions throughout the time that it’s been since the post was first put up. I’ve had a lot of time to think, but my focus initially, if I could do it over, would be to heal and repair a lot of my close relationships with my Jewish relatives, brothers and sisters. My journey is very unique. I grew up in a big melting pot full of different races, cultures and religions of people, so a lot of these conversations about antisemitism or anti-Blackness or anti-whiteness or any anti- that goes against a specific group of people, within my household, we used to talk about it.”

The Nets suspended Irving on Nov. 4, announcing in a press release that he was “unfit to be associated with the Brooklyn Nets” until he completed “a series of objective remedial measures that address the harmful impact of his conduct.” Since then, Irving said, he has been on a “learning journey,” which featured “a lot of conversations that needed to be had” and “a lot of reflection.”

“I’m a man who stands for peace,” Irving said. “I don’t condone any hate speech or any prejudice and I don’t want to be in a position where I’m being misunderstood on where I stand in terms of antisemitism or any hate for that matter for anybody in this world. So the process over the last few weeks was just a lot of conversations. I don’t want to get too deep into the details of those conversations but they were very moving, very impactful and it helped me become more aware of the repair that needed to be done, the healing that needs to be done still. So here I am, just really acknowledging the fact that it hasn’t been easy. Some of it has been painful, just learning about the history between different groups of people. And it’s given me a greater perspective.”

Irving has missed Brooklyn’s last eight games because of the suspension, but the team has listed him as “questionable” for Sunday’s game at Barclays Center against the Memphis Grizzlies. He said that, going forward, he has to “live responsibility and set a greater example for our youth, for my generation and the older generation.”

The Nets did not suspend Irving for the social media posts. They suspended him a week later, after they were “dismayed,” as they put it in the press release, “that Kyrie refused to unequivocally say he has no antisemitic beliefs, nor acknowledge specific hateful material in the film.” In this interview with SNY, Irving said he is “not antisemitic.”

“I never have been,” Irving continued. “I don’t have hate in my heart for the Jewish people or anyone who identifies as a Jew. I’m not anti-Jewish or any of that. And it’s been difficult to sit at home with my family with them seeing all of this and having questions. And the part that hasn’t been hard is explaining myself because I know who I am and I know what I represent, but I think the difficult aspect is just processing all this, understanding the power of my voice, the influence I have.”

As for the content of the film and his decision to share it with his followers, Irving repeated what he’d said at a press conference on Oct. 29: He “went to look up my name, Kyrie, which also translates in Hebrew to Yahweh or YHWH,” he said, “and I wanted to share the link with all those that were also on the same journey and search for their heritage as I am on.”

Irving continued: “The unfortunate aspect in that three-hour documentary is the antisemitic remarks in terms of generalizing Jewish people. I believe that was unfair, and that wasn’t the aspect of the post that I wanted the focus to be on. The initial post was supposed to be for all those that were searching for more information, more history and are able to interpret it in a way where they see it as progressive and they learn something from it. Again, it was just a post. It was no context I put into it. I was just watching the video to learn more about the heritage, do a deeper dive into who I am. And unfortunately in that process, I hurt some people, and I’m sorry for that. But the search for what tribe I belong to, where I come from, is ongoing. And I’m continuing this search with God and, wherever I’m placed, I believe that that’s where I’m supposed to be.

“But I had to go through this to truly understand my power and the position I sit in and understand that some things are meant to be explained and I should have done that. Instead of being in this position now where there are a bunch of assumptions or questions on what I meant and how I wanted it to be portrayed. It wasn’t a promotion. It wasn’t something that I was advocating for in terms of antisemitic remarks. Just the majority of the documentary was speaking on the lost tribes of our world, Black people specifically, and dealing with other races that are also searching for their history. So it’s a longer question, I don’t want to get too longwinded here, but mainly I just want to talk about the progression that I’ve made and also sitting in this unique position of bringing people together. So that’s the mission and purpose that I’m focused on and that’s what God has put on my heart.”

Both the film “Hebrews to Negroes” and the book that it is based on allege that Jewish people have established “five major falsehoods” in order to “conceal their nature and protect their status and power.” The thesis is that Jewish people are secretly trying to “extort America” as part of “their plan for world domination.” One of the five purported “falsehoods” is that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust.

Asked his thought process behind not unequivocally denouncing the antisemitic material in the film or stating plainly that he does not have antisemitic beliefs before he was suspended, Irving told SNY on Saturday that, as a child, he “picked up early on that we are really legitimately one human race, and it is our job as human beings to protect one another.”

Irving continued: “After the post came out and the press conference happened, I felt like I was protecting the truth. But all in all, I felt like I was protecting my character. And I reacted out of just pure defense. And just hurt that I could be labeled or I thought that I was being labeled as antisemitic or anti-Jewish and I felt like that was just so disrespectful to ask me whether or not I was antisemitic or not. Now, to the outside world it, may have been seen as a simple yes or no, you know, which, rightfully so — it should have been, ‘No, I’m not antisemitic. No, I’m not anti-Jewish. I am a person that believes that we all should have equal opportunities and that we should all shower each other with love,’ and that should be at the forefront. But it wasn’t in that initial conversation, and I take my accountability and I want to apologize for that because it came off the wrong way completely.”

During a media availability on Nov. 4, Irving repeatedly said, “I cannot be antisemitic if I know where I come from” and declined to elaborate.

“That statement itself was just referring back to my childhood and all of the relatives and friends that I have made and that I will continue to get t know on a deeper level,” Irving told SNY. “They’re Jewish, some of them are Jewish, some of them are not Jewish. But I felt like that didn’t matter. And because I felt like it didn’t matter in that moment, it came off the wrong way. So I’m glad that I could clean that up right now. It’s unfortunate that that was taken the wrong way and taken out of context. But I really just wanted to focus on how I can become better from that. Because there were some statements that were used that I don’t necessarily feel like are true representations of me and what I stand for. And it’s just now I’m in this space to be able to say, ‘Hey, I know that I could have handled that better, I did not mean to send any hurt or threats or impact or harm to the Jewish community or anyone in it.’

“My intent was just to say I’m proud of who I am and I am a leader in my own right, but I also know that in order to be a leader you have to embrace others’ strengths and weaknesses, faults, flaws, beauty. And I wish I got a chance to do that in that moment because I embrace everyone. So this is something that I’m still going to be—I’m still going to have the opportunity to work through that press conference moment or the other press conference moment, but I’ll say that I should’ve just answered the questions and just moved on. And just kept the conversation centered on me embracing all walks of life and having love for our world.”

Irving said that he wants “to deal with it better right now and just say that I’m sorry to not only the Jewish community but to my family members and to my relatives because they know I stand for something bigger and I’m grateful now I get to explain myself.”

In his Instagram apology post after the suspension, Irving wrote that he wants to have “an open dialogue to learn more and grow from this,” adding that he is “learning from this unfortunate event and hope we can find understanding between us all.” Asked what that will look like for him, he told SNY, “I’ve learned over the last few weeks that speaking openly about religion and culture and race, it’s gotta be a safe space where everyone can speak openly and they’re not judged harshly or unfairly or unjustly.”

Irving continued: “I believe as human beings we all have different beliefs but there’s one universal true God that we all serve and in order to do that sometimes you have to go into some uncomfortable situations to really understand why you’re there. And for me, that’s the position I felt like I was in. The dialogue was a great start, but the reality is that our actions as human beings and my actions are going to have to speak louder because there is a level of hurt and pain that a lot of communities feel for not being recognized for a lot of their history and a lot of their cultural achievements and accomplishments and because of that there is a pride that they feel, that I feel, that it should be represented the right way and there shouldn’t be a fear or a thought, a second thought, that comes with this. It’s just standing up for the right things, making sure that you’re standing up with everyone.”

Then Irving said that he is “joining a collective effort, a collective community, a commune of people that really want to see the world in a more accepting way, in a more liberating way, in a freeing way I’ll say in terms of being able to be proud of who you are without feeling like you’re dismissing others.”

He added that he is “grateful that I got an opportunity to do this over these last few weeks. Obviously, I didn’t want to be away from my teammates or the game or from work, but I’m grateful that I was utilized as a beacon to start this dialogue and start these conversations so we can move our world forward.”

Irving said he wanted to turn the crisis “into a positive moment.” He “did not realize how much impact that it would cause, posting the link,” he said. “And I honestly am guilty of not knowing how powerful my platforms are. And because of that, there were just some more or less misinterpretations or misunderstandings that took place.” He said he feels a “oneness” with “all those around me” and wants to “continue to build on that” by creating a “safe space for all those that want to see a peaceful world and a harmonious world the opportunity to speak openly without feeling the judgment of being harshly criticized or being canceled.”

He said that there are “a few things” that can’t be criticized “in today’s world,” and that “it’s not something that I’m used to because, again, in my childhood, in my household, I have such a great representation of all races and all religions and all people. So these conversations are just normal. They’re normalized in my household. We talk about everything. There isn’t anything off the table. We don’t judge one another. And I assume that, at this point, I had to learn that society just doesn’t work that way or they’re not ready to work that way in general. But I’m creating this space in order to do that. And the movement is just being started, I believe.”

Asked if he has a message for the Jewish community, Irving said: “Yeah, message to the Jewish community, to my Jewish relatives, to my Jewish brothers and sisters, is we are more alike than we realize. We have similar struggles. And I can acknowledge those. We have so much connectivity between our cultures. And I would just like that to continue. I would just like to focus on the light that we share with one another, taking care of our families.”

Irving “reacted defensively,” he said. “But I would say that, if you got to know me a little bit more, which, I would love to use this opportunity to do that, just give you an inside look at Kai — I think a lot of people know Kyrie Irving and know the baseline story or the surface story, but me as Kai, as I know myself, I grew up around Jewish members of the community and it’s never been anything less than love and embracing and warm invites into our homes. So this is nothing new to me in terms of keeping an open dialogue within the Jewish community.

“It’s just unfortunate the circumstances that we’re under put me in a position where I felt like I had to defend me and my family rather than just focusing on how I’m continuing to progress these relationships, whether they’re Jewish or Black or white. I just care about people and when I hurt someone I do want to take my accountability and responsibility and say that I’ll do better.”

Sunday’s Bills-Browns game moved to Detroit, fans to receive ticket refunds purchased through the Bills or Ticketmaster

Bills EVP/COO Ron Raccuia and Bills GM Brandon Beane held a press conference via Zoom Thursday evening to discuss the change in location for Sunday’s game and other important topics including ticket info. Here is a summarized version of what Raccuia and Beane had to say.

Q: How was the decision reached to move the game to Detroit?

Raccuia: “The decision to move the game to Detroit has everything to do about safety. Safety first has been what we’ve been talking about here really for the last 48 to 72 hours. I do want to thank county executive Poloncarz, Governor Hochul, all of our elected officials, certainly (NFL) Commissioner (Rodger) Goodell and the entire league staff, and the lions organization for their commitment and communication and helping us move the game. As I said earlier, our sole concern was the safety of our players, our fans, our community, and making sure we did not divert any resources that the community will need coming this weekend.”

Q: Will tickets be refunded?

Raccuia: “We just actually put out an email to all the existing ticket holders for the game. So our fans will have a refund opportunity, depending on how they purchase their ticket. But I would ask them to check the emails that they should have received probably about five or 10 minutes ago actually. Those will all be refunded.”

Q: Are tickets transferrable for the game being played in Detroit?

Raccuia: “No transfer option. It’s really two separate transactions. Everyone’s tickets will automatically be credited depending on how they were purchased. So if they purchased on the Bills online, it’ll be credited that way, Ticketmaster, that way, season ticket members, directly to their season ticket account. And the new on-sale will be completely separate starting tomorrow. “

Q: What are the team travel plans?

Beane: We are going to try to keep a normal travel schedule. Obviously, we’re going to track the weather, but right now, we’re setting up a plane to leave sometime Saturday afternoon. We’re going to have to wait til we hear from the airline when they can get it here. But we would try to keep it as a close to our normal routine as possible. So right now, as long as the weather is what we anticipate for Sunday, we would fly back after the game. You know the game’s going to be at 1 so we can kind of have our normal routine and then fly back there on Wednesday.

Q: Any frustration about not having a home game?

Beane: Well, I’m counting on you to rally all the BillsMafia to show up. In all seriousness, we’re hoping for this to be still a home field advantage away. Luckily it’s not across the country. We know BillsMafia is all over, and hopefully those that are in Michigan area will definitely down. And hopefully the ones here that want to get out of the snow, will drive over there.
