Motorola working on two RAZR phones for 2023 to take the fight to Samsung?

Samsung may be the king of the foldable smartphone market, but it’s not the only manufacturer making foldable phones. Many Chinese manufacturers are also making foldable phones, including Motorola, which revived its mega-popular RAZR brand to launch its first proper foldable phone in 2019.

However, the new Moto RAZR failed because of a high price tag attached to a device with surprisingly outdated specs (for example, it featured a single 16MP rear camera and a tiny 2,500 mAh battery), and it simply could not compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip.

Motorola then launched another RAZR phone with a folding display earlier this year. While this newer model is cheaper, it’s still costlier than the Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 4, which gave the 2022 Moto RAZR no quarter and conquered the sales charts.

But according to a new rumor, it looks like Motorola has a plan. The Lenovo-owned manufacturer seems to be hoping it can eat into Samsung’s market share by launching not one but two new foldable phones next year. Motorola is reportedly working on new RAZR phones codenamed Juno and Venus for 2023.

While the specs of those phones are currently unknown, should Motorola manage to reduce the asking price even further and bring it in line with Samsung’s flip phones, it could spell trouble for the latter. Well, maybe “trouble” is too strong a word, but it certainly could help Motorola increase its presence in the foldable market even further.

Of course, competition is always good, because it ends up benefiting the consumer at the end of the day. Still, Samsung probably won’t be too happy about the whole situation if Motorola does launch two RAZR phones next year. Motorola could basically have the first mover advantage by launching one of the two phones in the first half of next year, because Samsung is likely going to wait until the second half of 2023 to launch the Galaxy Z Flip 4.

Whatever the case may be, this rumor suggests that the fight — one even Oppo is trying to participate in — for a piece of the foldable segment pie might heat up next year. We’ll have to wait and see just how much of a dent Motorola will be able to make, but there are certainly some interesting times ahead as the foldable segment continues to grow, and Samsung might want to be prepared as well as it can be to stay ahead of its rivals.

Motorola shows off its concept rollable smartphone

We’ve seen rollable device concepts from companies like Oppo and TCL, and LG was even working on a commercial rollable smartphone until it quit making mobile devices last year. Now, Lenovo is showing off a laptop with a rollout display, while its mobile division Motorola has a roll-out smartphone — and they look like some of the more practical efforts yet.

The phone starts out at a very pocketable 4 inches high, but with the click of a button, the OLED panel extends to a normal-sized 6.5 inches. Another click retracts the phone back to its original form. It’s usable at both sizes, and the content on the screen adapts to the size, including the home screen, videos and more, as shown below.

Lenovo also showed off a rollable laptop that starts with a typical landscape display and then rolls up to a square shape, making it better for documents or vertical TikTok style videos. Lenovo VP of design Brian Leonard explained in the video that it’s part of Lenovo’s research into novel form factors that started with the ThinkPad 360P laptop/tablet. “It can expand into a much larger screen real estate as the content dynamically adjusts to the screen, offering people an unprecedented way of hyper-tasking for productivity, browsing, and more,” he explained.

Motorola already makes a folding device, the Razr, that’s unfortunately not available in China, but nothing like this. People seem to love these rollable concepts, though — for instance, LG’s rollable OLED TV was a popular item at CES 2019. And in some ways, a rolling screen is more elegant than a folding one, as there’s no hinge or crease to worry about. While it remains squarely in the concept realm for now, we’d love to see Lenovo take a shot at commercializing it.

T-Mobile offering Motorola Edge (2022) for free with new line

Following soon after the announcement of the Motorola Edge (2022) T-Mobile is announcing its deals for the new mid-range smartphone.

T-Mobile customers (new and existing) will be able to get the new Moto device for free when adding a qualifying line. Eligibility is not explicitly outlined on T-Mobile’s website.

Motorola Edge (2022)

The Motorola Edge (2022) comes powered by a MediaTek Dimensity 1050 with support for mmWave 5G, it also comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage. There’s a 6.6-inch OLED screen with 144Hz refresh rate, an in-display fingerprint scanner, and HDR10+ support.

In addition to 30W TurboPower charging of its 5,000 mAh battery, there is also support for 15W wireless charging and 5W reverse charging. Finally, its triple camera system is made up of a 50MP main cmera, a 13MP ultrawide camera, and a depth sensor.

Executive shares a sample picture from the 200MP sensor on the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra

The first smartphone to feature a 200MP camera sensor is expected to be the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra (AKA Moto X30 Pro) which could be introduced later this month. The flagship should be equipped with a 6.7-inch curved AMOLED display with a 144Hz refresh rate and an FHD+ resolution. The phone reportedly will be available with as much as 12GB of memory and perhaps 512GB of storage.

Besides the 200MP camera sensor, the array on the back will supposedly include a 50MP sensor and a 12MP sensor although it is possible that the handset might not include an ultra-wide option. The battery is rumored to weigh in at 4500mAh and could fast charge at 125W when charging with a wire, and at 50W when using wireless charging. Under the hood will be Qualcomm’s top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset.
The 200MP camera sensor is arguably the most exciting feature of the device. The Edge 30 Ultra will be the only handset to sport the Samsung ISOCELL HP1 200MP sensor at first. With the focus on the camera (see what we did there?), Lenovo General Manager Chen Jin went to his Weibo account and posted a sample photograph from the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra.
Published by 91 Mobiles, the photo shows a colorful flower arrangement shot at 50MP (using the 4:1 pixel binning with the 200MP sensor). With Pixel binning, pixels share information with adjacent pixels. For example, with 4:1 pixel binning, four pixels share the data they’ve collected to produce a super pixel. This reduces the 200MP image to 50MP and creates a brighter photo with less noise.

Chen Lin pointed out that the 4:1 pixel binning used on the device is superior to the 9:1 binning used with the 108MP camera found on the Moto G200 released earlier this year.

Performance, looks,  a great camera; it looks like the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra might live up to the high expectations that this Android flagship now has.

Leaked Motorola Razr 3 images reveal an upgraded camera and a boxier design

A pair of leaked images from reliable leaker Evan Blass (via 91Mobiles) gives us a first look at what appears to be a testing model of the third generation Motorola Razr. The device, codenamed Maven, notably houses two upgraded cameras on its back: a 50MP f / 1.8 main sensor and a 13MP sensor for macro and ultra-wide shots.

In the image of the device fully closed, you’ll notice that it seems to have lost its “chin,” or the lip that extended outward in previous iterations of the device. It looks like it folds over on itself to form a square shape when it’s closed, deviating from both the modern remakes of the device and its original design.

Image: Evan Blass via 91Mobiles

Blass also notes that the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the power button, which is likely on the side of the device. Motorola previously placed the fingerprint sensor on the chin of the 2019 Razr, and then moved it to the back of the device for the 5G-upgraded Razr it released in 2020. Both placements weren’t exactly ideal — The Verge’s former executive editor, Dieter Bohn, described its placement on the back of the device as an “awkward spot to reach,” and said putting it on the chin forced him to open the phone with two hands.

Blass says the Razr 3 comes with an FHD+ interior folding display and a hole-punch 32MP selfie camera. (You can view the image of the device’s interior screen over at 91Mobiles.) Motorola is rumored to release a standard version of the device with a Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 system-on-a-chip (SoC), along with a “Plus” variant, presumably with an upgraded, but as-yet-unknown, chip. As for storage, it’s supposed to come with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage.

With its boxier design and dual camera sensors, it looks like Motorola is gearing up to compete with Samsung’s flagship foldable: the Galaxy Z Flip 3. The first two Razr reboots weren’t exactly the most impressive — the 2019 device came with a $1,499 price tag and several flaws, like a lumpy screen, creaky hinge, and subpar camera. Motorola’s second iteration wasn’t much better and the addition of 5G still didn’t justify its $1,399 price.

In line with an announcement from a Lenovo executive in December (Lenovo bought out the mobile brand in 2014), the third generation Razr is rumored to launch in China in July or August. There’s no word on a release date outside of China, however. The Verge reached out to Motorola with a request for comment but didn’t immediately hear back.

Completely redesigned Motorola Razr 2022 breaks cover for the first time

Although Motorola was amongst the first companies to release a foldable phone, the Lenovo-owned manufacturer didn’t launch a successor to its second foldable phone, the 2020 Razr 5G, in 2021, but as a report had said, we are likely to see a new, completely redesigned Razr this year.
The first Razr was announced in 2019 and its 5G-enable version came out in September 2020. Although the phone did well initially in one market, we have no clue about its overall market performance, but given that Samsung accounted for 88 percent of foldable smartphone sales in 2021, it’s safe to assume the Razr was not exactly a hot seller.
The Razr 5G was a clamshell phone like Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 5G, and even though the starting price of both was in the neighborhood of $1,400, the Flip 5G had better core specs, a bigger battery, and a superior camera array.
Samsung has since released an even better version, the Flip 3, and the South Korean company is now gearing up to launch the Flip 4. If a new report from Evan Blass is accurate, which it likely is given his track record, the next Motorola Razr could prove to be a formidable competitor.
Blass, writing for 91Mobiles, says that the third foldable Motorola phone is codenamed Maven and it will boast top-notch specs and a new look.

The leaker says that the next Razr will be closer in look to the Z Flip 3 than the Razr 5G. It is expected to have a slightly boxier and squared-off design and will do away with the chunky bottom bezel of its predecessor and move the fingerprint sensor to the power button.

The Razr 5G featured a lone 48MP camera, and its successor is expected to have an upgraded array with a 50MP main sensor and a 13MP hybrid wide-angle and macro module. The 20MP selfie camera will be replaced by a 32MP snapper which will be housed in a pinhole instead of a notch.

The Razr 5G looks more like a toy phone because of the chin, thick bezels, and notch, and it feels good just thinking about a new version without all this clutter.

We still don’t know if the Razr Maven will have different dimensions than the 2020 model and whether the company plans to make any changes to the 6.2-inches internal and 2.7-inches external displays, but the report does mention that the main screen is FHD+.

Motorola Razr 2022 will have flagship specs

We are also being told that Motorola was initially going to release two versions of the Razr 2022, one with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, and one with its rumored Plus version, but given recent rumors that the boosted version has been delayed, that plan might have to be reconsidered. Regardless, this is great news because the Razr 5G was powered by a mid-tier chip.
The phone is expected to come in 8GB and 12GB RAM variants, and 256GB and 512GB storage options.Color options will apparently include Quartz Black and Tranquil Blue.

The Razr 3 will allegedly be here in summer, and will first be released in China in late July or early August, and will come to global markets at a later date,

There are no concrete pricing details yet, but the report says to expect ‘premium pricing,’ which appears to imply it might not be any cheaper than the Razr 5G, which costs $1,399.99.
