The AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs feature support for only DDR5 memory on the new AM5 board platform. As such, getting a new motherboard and memory kit along with the CPU itself is going to be quite an expensive upgrade.AMD has introduced a total of four chipsets for its Ryzen 7000 CPU lineup which includes X670E, X670, B650E, and B650 but none of them offer the same value as the AM4 offerings. The B650 lineup which was supposed to start at $125 US realistically starts at over $160 US.

Recent sales figures have also shown that the AM5 platform isn’t doing particularly well against the older AM4 family. Even the Intel LGA 1700 platform is doing well compared to AMD’s new platform.

Over at Microcenter, we can see the retailer is offering a free 32 GB DDR5-5600 EXPO Memory Kit, the G.Skill Flare X5 series, with the purchase of any AMD Ryzen 9 7000 or AMD Ryzen 7 7000 CPU. 9 7950X, Ryzen 9 7900X, and the Ryzen 7 7700X. The deal doesn’t apply to the Ryzen 5 7600X. The kit itself is $189.99 US and will save you some major upgrading costs if you are buying the new AM5 platform.

Not only that, but Microcenter is also offering $50 US off on all AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs on the purchase of a compatible eligible motherboard. It’s not just Microcenter that’s offering deals like these. Japanese retail outlet, Tsukumo is currently offering an AMD Ryzen 9 7950X and X670E Taichi motherboard bundle for 11,500 Yen (down from 12,650 Yen). The deal is also applicable with AMD Ryzen 9 7900X and Ryzen 7 7700X while the AMD Ryzen 5 7600X is omitted here too. The deal started today and will last till the 5th of November.

There are definitely the pricing and upgrade costs that are making people cautious about upgrading to the AM5 platform this early. However, we have heard reports that AMD is cutting down the production capacity of the standard chips and moving that to the next-gen Ryzen 7000 3D family which is expected to be introduced at CES 2023 . Given the huge increase in gaming performance that the 3D V-Cache Zen 4 chips will offer, we can see renewed interest in the AM5 platforms among gamers and enthusiasts.

AMD B650E Chipset Motherboards To Offer PCIe Gen 5.0 Slot & PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 At Mainstream Prices

AMD is working on four 600-series chipsets for its AM5 platform which includes X670E, X670, B650E & B650 motherboards. While X670E & X670 have been the main talk and B650 has been official, the latest leaks bring us the final confirmation of the B650E chipset too.

We reported back at Computex 2022 that the B650E series motherboards offer more PCB layers to efficiently offer better signaling due to PCIE’s rigid Gen5 protocol specifications. Right now, there is the Extreme X670 chipset has been announced officially, adding to the capability of PCIe Gen 5 slot for graphics support and PCIe Gen 5 M.2 for storage.

In an internal presentation leaked by @wxnod, we can see that a manufacturer has listed the B650E (E For Extreme) chipset in one of its slides. The main advantage of B650E motherboards will be that since they feature a singular Promontory 21 chipset, they will definitely be aimed at the mainstream consumer segment with more affordable prices compared to the X670E and the X670 lineup.

While losing a Promontory 21 chipset will lead to decreased I/O capabilities, this implementation will allow for more feasible mATX and mITX designs. We have seen ASUS’s ROG Maximus X670E Gene and ROG STRIX X670E-I Gaming WiFi which feature an mATX & mITX design, respectively.

Both motherboards are based on the X670E chipset which means that they will be priced higher. But a board with a B650E chipset can retain the two most crucial aspects of the Extreme series platform and that’s support for a PCIe Gen 5.0 slot and PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2. At the same time, the pricing compared to the standard B650 (Non-E) motherboards will be slightly higher for the B650E offerings considering they will pack more PCB layers to support the necessary signaling interface for Gen 5 slot and M.2 support.

B650E will give AMD an edge in the mainstream segment where they do lack DDR4 support versus the Intel offerings but having proper Gen 5 slot and M.2 port support can have better longevity, especially considering that Gen 5 SSDs and the DirectStorage API are going to be a major deal in the upcoming years.

There have so far been no product announcements regarding either, the B650E or B650 boards. But, we expect to see products in October as they were previously meant to launch in early Q4 2022. In a datasheet leaked by Videocardz, presumably from MSI, we can see that the Z790 chipset motherboards will offer faster DDR5 and DDR4 memory speeds compared to the existing Z690 motherboards. A total of three motherboards have been listed, one supporting DDR5 and the other two with DDR4 support.

According to the datasheet, the DDR5 Z790 motherboard will feature four DIMM slots with support for 128 GB capacities with speeds listed as follows:

  • 1 DIMM Per Channel (1-Rank) – Up To DDR5-6800+
  • 1 DIMM Per Channel (1-Rank) – Up To DDR5-6400+
  • 2 DIMM Per Channel (2-Rank) – Up To DDR5-6400+

As for Z790 DDR4 motherboards, it looks like the maximum memory speed supported here will be up to DDR4-5333+. Following are the speeds listed for the faster Z790 DDR4 configuration:

Intel Z790 motherboards will be launching in October along with the 13th Gen Raptor Lake CPU lineup. The motherboards will have support for PCIe Gen 5.0 and DDR5 memory however they won’t have a PCIe Gen 5.0 M.2 slot directly connected to the CPU Gen 5 lanes unless the board vendors decided to split the discrete GPU x16 lanes.

Intel Z790 motherboards listed with support for DDR5-6800 and DDR4-5333 memory

Intel Z790 motherboards support up to DDR5-6800 memory

Here are some first details on Intel Z790 memory support. 

We received documents for the upcoming MSI Z790 motherboard series, including their specifications. The documents confirm that these motherboards will support JEDEC DDR5-5600 specs by default (for Alder Lake that was 4800 MT/s).

MSI MEG Z790 series support up to 6800+ MT/s in 1 DIMM Per Channel (1DPC) and 1-rank configuration. For 2-rank memory, that speed will drop to 6400 MT/s. For comparison, MSI’s Z690 premium MEG boards such as GODLIKE, ACE or UNIFY support DDR5 memory up to 6666 MT/s, while the high-end segment (MPG) goes up to 6400 MT/s.

There will also be Z790 motherboards with DDR4 memory supporting up to 5333 MT/s speeds in 1DPC and 1R configurations. The fastest MSI Z690 DDR4 board supports up to 5200 MT/s memory.

Interestingly, none of the MSI X670E motherboards already listed on official websites have memory specifications. Therefore, one cannot say precisely whether it is Z790 or X670E series supporting faster memory, or maybe there is no difference at all.

In fact, neither ASUS, Gigabyte nor ASRock list the memory specs, however Biostar does (thanks to dudulab for letting us know). According to X670E Valkyrie specs, it supports up to DDR5-6000 overclocked memory.

AMD is yet to reveal details on its EXPO technology for DDR5 memory overclocking profiles. This information has not been shared yet by any board partner or even AMD themselves.

MSI Confirms AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs & X670 Motherboards Launch On 15th September

MSI has confirmed what we exclusively said a few days ago, that AMD’s Ryzen 7000 “Zen 4” CPUs & X670 motherboards will launch on the 15th of September.

You would think that AMD would beat MSI to reveal the release date of their product, but instead, the latter revealed the launch of the Ryzen 7000 CPU series and its X670 motherboard series at once, falling mid-September, and both indicating the same day.

AMD has not officially revealed the dates themselves but our sources already pointed this out and we even got to know about the 29th August announcement where the red team will disclose full specs and prices. MSI plans to release four X670 motherboards initially for the AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPU family which would include the MEG X670E GODLIKE, MEG X670E Ace, MPG X670E Carbon WiFI & the PRO X670E-P WIFI. We will be getting more information such as prices, overclocking, and memory DDR5 support closer to the launch. The company will also have a range of B650 chipset motherboards to showcase but they aren’t planned for launch until a bit slightly later.

Yesterday at the AMD “Meet The Experts” Livestream, MSI gave a bit more insight into their X670E motherboards. MSI is pushing things to the limits with high-end heatsink designs such as screwless M.2 Shield Frozr technology, M.2 XPANDER-Z Gen 5 Dual AIC (supporting up to two PCIe Gen 5.0 x4) SSDs in actively cooled solution), 60W USB Type-C power delivery and more robust power delivery for each tier of the motherboard. We also get a better look at the MEG X670E GODLIKE which looks as beast as ever with its massively saturated PCB design and tons of IO to work with. More details on MSI’s lineup here.

AMD’s High-End X670E Motherboards From ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock & Biostar Detailed

AMD’s motherboard partners such as ASUS, MSI, ASRock, Gigabyte & Biostar have unveiled more details about their top X670E designs for Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs.

ASUS, MSI, Gigabyte, ASRock & Biostar Showcase Their High-End AMD X670E Motherboards

The AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs will be migrating to a new home known as AM5, the successor to the long-lasting AM4 platform. It marks a fresh start for the Ryzen Desktop family and as such, existing Ryzen CPUs starting with Ryzen 1000 & all the way up to Ryzen 5000 won’t be supported by the new platform we will tell you why it is so.

The AM5 platform will first and foremost feature the brand new LGA 1718 socket. That’s correct, AMD isn’t going the PGA (Pin Grid Array) route anymore and now focusing on LGA (Land Grid Array), similar to what Intel uses on its existing desktop processors. The main reason to go LGA is due to the addition of enhanced and next-gen features such as PCIe Gen 5, DDR5, etc that we will get to see on the AM5 platform. The socket has a single latch & gone are the days of worrying about pins underneath your precious processors.

Representatives of each motherboard manufacturer joined AMD’s latest “Meet The Experts” live-stream to talk about their next-gen X670E designs but it looks like we may still be missing some details regarding overclocking and memory support which is something that AMD might not like being talked about right now although the full announcement of the product lineup is just a few weeks away on 29th August with a launch planned for 15th of August. So let’s look into what the new high-end motherboard offerings have to offer.

ASUS X670E Motherboards

ASUS kicked it off by unveiling its high-end ROG Crosshair X670E Extreme and ROG Crosshair X670E HERO motherboards. The ROG Crosshair motherboards come with 20+2 phases for the Extreme & 18+2 phases for the HERO models. Both models are designed with some insane 110A Power Stages and in a Teamed design. The VCore PWM controller is an Infineon ASP2205 while the Power Stages are based on Vishay’s SIC850.

ASUS specifically states that the high-end power delivery is a necessity when overclocking the CPU as it leads to massive current swings and power demand increasing exponentially. Some features highlighted include WiFi 6E (AX210), 10 GbE Marvell AQC113CS connectors, Gen 5.0 PCIe x16 & M.2, USB 4 and Quick Charge 4+ ports.

MSI X670E Motherboards

MSI will be rolling out four brand new X670E Motherboards within its MEG, MPG, and PRO lineups. We recently revealed their flagship MEG X670E GODLIKE motherboards and the manufacturer has confirmed the specs and PCB we reported. The VRM configuration for MSI’s X670E motherboard is as listed below:

The lineup that Gigabyte unveiled includes four AORUS motherboards which include X670E AORUS Xtreme, AORUS Master, AORUS Pro AX & AORUS Elite AX. The Xtreme is expected to break some OC records on AMD Ryzen 7000 CPUs.

ASRock X670E Motherboards

ASRock is showcasing five X670E motherboards for the AMD Ryzen 7000 Desktop CPUs. These include the X670E Taichi Carrara, X670E Taichi, X670E Steel Legend, X670E PRO RS & X670E PG Lightning. All five motherboards feature full compatibility with the next-gen AMD Zen 4 CPUs along with DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen 5.0.

The company highlighted some of the main features being USB Type-C with fast charging, an 8-layer PCB design, PCIe 5.0, and M.2 fan heatsink design plus DDR5 with protection circuits. The lineup is also detailed by us here.

Biostar X670E Motherboards

Biostar also talked a bit about their flagship X670E VALKYRIE motherboard which features a 22-phase VRM design and a very solid-looking design that comes with DR.MOS and Digital PWM ICs. The motherboard is a very premium product designed to support the highest-end AMD Zen 4 CPUs.

Will There Be mATX & Mini-ITX AM5 Motherboards?

Answering a question raised by viewers on whether we will see mATX and Mini-ITX designs within the AM5 family, ASRock’s Mike Yang stated that there are certain obstacles that they are working on such as thermal heat dissipation on such a small form factor but once a breakthrough is made, they certainly plan on offering smaller board designs for every chipset of the AMD 600-series line.

Do 2280 M.2 SSDs Fit On The New 2510 M.2 Slots?

MSI’s Michiel Berkhout stated that the current 2280 M.2 form factor is fully compatible with the 2510 M.2 slots featured on their motherboards.

Gigabyte’s Sofos Oikonomou has stated that there will indeed be a Tachyon motherboard based on the AM5 socket but it will be based on a different chipset, not the X670 so we are likely looking at a B650(E) product.

It is always great to hear more information directly from motherboard manufacturers but key details such as AMD EXPO DDR5 memory and overclocking support are still missing. It looks like we now have to wait till the reviews which don’t come out until the 13th of September to get more data on those but we will try to provide you with more information on those in the coming weeks.

AMD reveals its X670 Extreme, X670 and B650 chipsets for first-gen AM5 motherboards

AMD 600-series chipsets feature PCIe Gen5, DDR5 support

AMD X670E is the flagship chipset for the new motherboard series.

AMD AM5 infrastructure is based on a new LGA 1718 socket which will natively support CPUs up to 170W. The 600-series platform is equipped for DDR5 memory and PCIe Gen5 for storage and graphics (depending on a chipset).

AMD confirmed that X670E (Extreme) is designed for “Unparalleled Capability and Extreme Overclocking”. It is designed to offer PCIe Gen5 ‘everywhere’. On the other hand we have X670 for “Enthusiasts Overclocking” with Gen5 storage support and optionally graphics. The mainstream platform based on B650 chipset will support PCIe Gen5 for storage only.

The 600-series motherboards will offer up to 24 PCIe Gen5 lanes for storage and graphics, up to 14 SuperSpeed USB 20 Gbps (TypeC), WiFI-E6 support with DBS/Bluetooth Low Energy 5.2. Interestingly. AMD also revealed 600-series motherboards will be equipped with up to four HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 2 outputs. This will come in handy considering desktop Ryzen 7000 series codenamed “Raphael” feature integrated RDNA2 graphics.

AMD also confirms its new AM5 platform supports a new technology called SmartAccess Storage. We have revealed those plans a few weeks ago, and we were right in our predictions. This technology adds AMD platform technology and GPU decompression for Microsoft DirectStorage Enabled Games.

YouTuber figured out Asus Z690 Hero motherboards melted down due to backward capacitor

A YouTuber who goes by the name of Buildzoid on the Actually Hardware Overlocking channel has figured out that a backward capacitor on the Asus ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboard is causing it to melt down, according to a report by Tom’s Hardware. Asus has since acknowledged the issue in a post on its site and plans on issuing replacements to customers with affected motherboards.

Problems with the Z690 Hero motherboard started turning up on the Asus support forum, as well as on Reddit, and the issues experienced by users are pretty much identical. As noted by Tom’s Hardware, users reported that their motherboards started smoking in the same spot: the two MOSFETs (metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor) next to the DIMM slots and the Q-code reader.

In a video on his channel, Buildzoid diagnoses the issue using only the pictures posted to support forums and on Reddit, attributing the Z690 Hero’s failure to the backward capacitor installed next to the MOSFETs, not the MOSFETs themselves. Buildzoid looks closely at the images of the motherboard, pointing out that the text on the capacitor is actually upside down, a potential sign that it’s installed incorrectly. As Tom’s Hardware mentions, a reversed capacitor results in reversed polarity, causing the MOSFETs to malfunction and burn up.

After news about the issue started gaining traction, Asus confirmed that Buildzoid’s diagnosis is, in fact, correct. “In our ongoing investigation, we have preliminarily identified a potential reversed memory capacitor issue in the production process from one of the production lines that may cause debug error code 53, no post, or motherboard components damage,” Asus announced. “The issue potentially affects units manufactured in 2021 with the part number 90MB18E0-MVAAY0 and serial number starting with MA, MB, or MC.”

The company says you can find your Z690 Hero’s serial number and part number on the side of your motherboard’s packaging, as well as on the sticker that’s placed on the top or bottom of the motherboard itself. In a separate post on Asus’ Facebook page, the company added a link to a tool that checks whether your Z690 Hero is affected by the issue based on its serial number.

“Going forward, we are continuing our thorough inspection with our suppliers and customers to identify all possible affected ROG Maximus Z690 Hero motherboards in the market and will be working with relevant government agencies on a replacement program,” Asus states.
