Revealing Mortal Kombat 2 Code Leak Pulled By Warner Bros.

Image: Midway Games / Nether Realm / Warner Bros.

Over the Winter holiday, someone filled all Mortal Kombat appreciators’ Christmas stockings up with something a lil’ extra: Mortal Kombat II’s source code on GitHub. The lawyers at Warner Bros. took exception to this by issuing a swift DMCA takedown notice that Github adhered to by disabling public access—but don’t fret, as there are other ways to check out the content dump.

Initially reported by Exputer, the Github post was uploaded to the internet hosting service on December 27 before getting reshared on the r/MortalKombat subreddit. While MK II’s entire source code is no longer available thanks to that DMCA takedown, that hasn’t stopped MK fans from reuploading sprites and artwork on social media.

The most notable elements of content that the MK II source code dump unearthed was unused animations, artwork, and moves that didn’t make the cut for the game’s release in ‘93. One piece of artwork was an alternate attract mode screen featuring an oiled-up Shao Khan. Although the alternate panel of Sindel’s spurned lover looks the same as MK II’s final Shao Khan attract mode screen, the unused artwork has a bunch of cloaked wizards on floating platforms in the background instead of a roaring fire. According to Polygon, the original artwork is more imposing because it illustrates how stacked the odds are against Earth Realm. Honestly, yeah, a bunch of platforming wizards is leagues scarier than a generic flame, especially if you’ve had the misfortune of playing the ‘97 beat ‘em up spin-off, Mortal Kombat Mythologies.

The MK II leak also showcased some previously unused sprite animation and moves. If you don’t have time to parse through a nearly-three-hour YouTube video of some dude scrubbing through the GitHub files, here’s a detailed Twitter thread compiling all of the most notable findings, Twitter user Pegasus Kid combed through the leak and uploaded a comprehensive thread of cut moves, stage art, and fatalities. My favorite sprite, since everyone was wondering, is Kintaro walk cycle animation because it’s timed perfectly to the music in the Metal Gear Solid but its the Dr. Livesey Meme video.

Kotaku reached out to Warner Bros. and Nether Realm studios for comment.

Ed Boon Has Bad News For Mortal Kombat, Injustice Fans

Image: NetherRealm Studios / WB Games

The Winter E3, aka The Game Awards, is airing next week and people are getting excited about what will be revealed during the three-hour montage of trailers and awards. But if you were excited about a new Mortal Kombat or Injustice 3 making a surprise appearance, well, you might want to sit down. I’ve got some bad news to share.

During the 2018 Game Awards, NetherRealm revealed Mortal Kombat 11 to the world via a splashy cinematic trailer. Now, four unfathomably long years later, fans are left wondering where the studio’s next game is. In the past, studio creative director Ed Boon would pop up every two years or so to announce its next big game. But that hasn’t happened yet, and it has some players getting very anxious as the longest-ever wait between NetherRealm projects grows day after day. So, of course, many began looking toward December 8’s Game Awards for hope. Some theorized that like in 2018, Boon and co. would use the annual show to reveal their next big thing. But straight from Boon himself, that ain’t happening.

Earlier today, Boon tweeted that while he appreciates the excitement fans have for the studio’s next game, they aren’t ready to announce anything yet.

“Four years ago at the Game Awards we managed to pull off a surprise announcement of MK11, which turned out great,” tweeted Boon. “Perhaps too great, as many assumed we’d repeat that trick for our next game. Thank you for the anticipation, but we’re not ready to announce the next NRS game yet.”

Of course, even with such a clear and blunt message saying “No, we aren’t announcing the next Injustice or Mortal Kombat next week, sorry,” some folks are still hoping he’s not telling the whole truth. And in their defense, Ed Boon has been known to troll his online fans and mess with them using memes or teases. But here, it does seem like he really, super duper doesn’t want people to get excited over nothing.

If you really wanted you could read into his tweet and find some wiggle room that would allow for, like, the studio isn’t ready to announce its next game…but it is ready to release it! And then NetherRealm and WB stealth-drop MK12 or Injustice 3. But I wouldn’t buy into that wild theory because it will only end with you depressed and bummed when it doesn’t happen. Still, if you resolve to sit through The Game Awards anyway, you could end up winning a free Steam Deck for your trouble. It’s no MK12, but what is?

Mortal Kombat and Injustice Boss Confirms Some Good News for Fans

NetherRealm Studios boss, Ed Boon — the creative director of both the Mortal Kombat series and the Injustice series — has some good news for fans looking forward to the next game out of the Chicago-based studio. This coming spring, it will be four years since the release of Mortal Kombat 11. Four years isn’t a very long hiatus for most developers, but NetherRealm Studios had developed a cadence of releasing a new game every two years, alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice in the process, so it’s a long break for it. This is why many expected to get Injustice 3 in 2021 and then Mortal Kombat 12 in 2023. The latter could still happen, but obviously, the former did not.

It remains to be seen which of the two series NetherRealm Studios is currently working on. History suggests it’s Injustice, but rumors and reports claim it’s Mortal Kombat 12. And of course, it could be neither of these things. It could be another IP or something brand new. Whatever the case, whatever game comes next from NetherRealm Studios, it won’t be free-to-play. And with so many competitive and online games going free-to-play, this will be music to the ears of hardcore Mortal Kombat and Injustice fans who will the series to continue as is.

The news comes the way of Ed Boon over on Twitter, who didn’t say much, but when asked if his next game will be free-to-play, he simple responded “no.” Of course, things change all the time in game development, but it’s safe to assume whatever NetherRealm Studios is working on, it’s pretty deep in development, which means it’s very unlikely it’s going to u-turn from a premium product to a free-to-play product. It’s not unheard of, just not common.

As always, feel free to leave a comment or two letting us know what you think or, alternatively, hit me up on Twitter @Tyler_Fischer_ and let me know over there. What would you like to see next from NetherRealm Studios? Would you be interested in a free-to-play Mortal Kombat or Injustice

Mortal Kombat’s 30th Anniversary Bundle for PS5 Gets Over Here

Mortal Kombat is a treasured franchise among fighting game fans, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the beginning of October. Many had hoped that developer NetherRealm Games would commemorate the occasion as loudly as one of Johnny Cage’s jackets, and while that may still turn out to be true – well, the firm’s 30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle isn’t going to be earning the firm many Friendships.

Available to pre-order on Amazon UK – but technically not yet officially announced – the package includes a copy of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate for PS5 and last year’s maligned movie in 4K Ultra HD. To be fair, it does only cost £29.99, which is likely to work out at around $34.99 in the United States. Moreover, it includes a pretty tasty Amazon Exclusive steelbook case, which looks really nice.

Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. Please read our FTC Disclosure for more information.

But we’re not entirely sure who this is for. You’ve got to imagine that Mortal Kombat super-fans will already own Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate in some form, and will probably have seen the film, too. It’s likely this is just part of NetherRealm Games’ series celebrations, with the bundle due out on 26th September, 2022 – a whole two weeks before the anniversary itself. Hopefully this is merely a case of Warner Bros trying to find a creative way to flog more copies of the game – and the really exciting stuff will come later in the year.

Mortal Kombat Leak Reveals Disappointing Plans for 30th Anniversary

A new leak associated with the Mortal Kombat video game franchise has revealed some disappointing news to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the series. In early October, it will have officially been 30 years since the original Mortal Kombat game first hit arcades. As such, a number of fans have been hoping that developer NetherRealm Studios would look to celebrate this occasion in a special way, perhaps with a re-release of some older entries in the series. Sadly, a way of honoring the 30th anniversary does seem to be coming, but it’s not in the way that fans wanted.

Spotted on Amazon recently, a new 30th anniversary bundle associated with Mortal Kombat seems to be releasing next month. Rather than this bundle containing any older installments in the franchise, though, the package merely contains Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie on Blu-Ray. This “30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle” is said to be launching on September 26th and will also include a special steelbook that features art from the new Mortal Kombat film.

While there’s nothing wrong with this bundle on its own, as mentioned, it’s definitely not something that Mortal Kombat fans have been asking for. For a prolonged period of time, many in the Mortal Kombat community have been asking for remastered iterations of some of the original games. Namely, new iterations of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Mortal Kombat 3 on modern platforms have been highly sought after by fans for years. And while it was hoped that these games would finally be coming back as a way of celebrating the three-decade history of Mortal Kombat, it doesn’t look like these wishes will be granted by WB Games for the time being.

Do you have any interest in this upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 anniversary bundle that will seemingly be releasing next month? And do you think that new versions of some classic Mortal Kombat games will ever arrive? Let me know for yourself either down in the comments or hit me up on Twitter at @MooreMan12.

Johnny Cage Actor Might Be Teasing Mortal Kombat 12

Andrew Bowen, the voice actor for Johnny Cage in the Mortal Kombat series, is back on the lot at Warner Bros. for… something.

In a now-deleted tweet, Bowen shared a video of the voice actor standing in the Warner Bros. studio lot before staring at the camera with a mischievious grin. It’s the latest in a series of Tweets Bowen has been sharing online of him working on something in the Warner Bros. lot.

Every IGN Mortal Kombat Review

Fans have been quick to point out that this is yet another tease for the next Mortal Kombat game, which has been not-so-subtly hinted at over the past year. NetherRealm Studios’ Jonathan Andersen previously shared a photo that included a desktop file reference to Mortal Kombat 12.

While NetherRealm still isn’t revealing what it has in store, it has confirmed there is a new game in the works. When IGN interviewed NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon, he had no issue confirming the team is “working on another game,” though he was not at liberty to say what it is.

NetherRealm Interactive is a subsidiary of Warner Bros. Interactive, which now belongs to the combined Warner Bros. Discovery group. While the initial company merge cast some doubt over the future of several WB game studios, including NetherRealm, it doesn’t appear to have impacted any new game development from the Mortal Kombat developer.

Bill Murray speaks out about ‘Being Mortal’ film shutdown, saying ‘I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that’

Fox Searchlight told the film crew in an email last month that the film was being shut down due to an unspecified complaint but didn’t confirm Murray was involved, Deadline first reported on April 20.
On Saturday, Murray was attending the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholder meeting in Omaha, Nebraska. The actor, who’s a shareholder, told CNBC that he had a “difference of opinion” with a woman on the set of “Being Mortal.” But Murray said he was optimistic that he and the woman, whom he didn’t name, could “make peace.”

“We had a difference of opinion; I had a difference of opinion with a woman I’m working with. I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way,” Murray said. “The company, the movie studio wanted to do the right thing. So, they wanted to check it all out and investigate it and so they stopped the production. But as of now we’re talking and we’re trying to make peace with each other.”

The nature of the complaint has not been made public, but Murray said he had been thinking a lot about what happened, and it has been “quite an education” for him, according to the interview he gave CNBC.

“You know what I always thought was funny as a little kid isn’t necessarily the same as what’s funny now. Things change and the times change, so it’s important for me to figure it out,” Murray said. “I think the most important thing is that it’s best for the other person. I thought about and that it’s not best for the other person, doesn’t matter what happens for me. And that gave me a great deal of comfort and relaxation because your brain doesn’t operate well when you’re in the unknown, when you’re thinking like, ‘well, how can I be so…how can I misperceive? How can I be so inaccurate and so insensitive,’ when you think you’re being sensitive to some sensibility that you’ve had for a long time.”

The actor also told CNBC he hopes to work out his differences with the woman and restart production of “Being Mortal.”

“What would make me the happiest would be to put my boots on and for both of us to go back into work and be able to trust each other and work at the work that we both spent a lot of time developing the skill of,” Murray said to CNBC. “And hopefully do something that’s good for more than just the two of us, but for a whole crew of people who are movie makers and the movie studio as well.”

The movie, featuring Bill Murray, Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer, and directed by Aziz Ansari, is based on Atul Gawande’s non-fiction book “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End,” according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Ansari wrote the script and was also expected to play a role in the film.

Searchlight Pictures has not responded to multiple requests from CNN for comment.

Bill Murray Speaks Out After ‘Being Mortal’ Set Complaint – The Hollywood Reporter

Bill Murray is addressing the Being Mortal set complaint that led to the production suspension on the Aziz Ansari-directed film.

Speaking to CNBC on Saturday, the actor said there was a “difference of opinion” with a woman that he was working with that led to the complaint and production pause. “I did something I thought was funny, and it wasn’t taken that way,” he told the outlet.

He did not provide further detail on what exactly happened on set, but CNBC reported that Murray, who spoke about the incident during an on-camera interview with the business network at the Berkshire Hathaway annual shareholders meeting, “was optimistic” that production would restart and that the incident would be settled between him and the woman.

“As of now we are talking, and we are trying to make peace with each other,” the actor-comedian, who is also reportedly a Berkshire Hathaway shareholder, said. “We are both professionals. We like each others’ work. We like each other, I think, and if we can’t really get along and trust each other, there’s no point in going further working together or making the movie as well. It’s been quite an education for me.”

Murray said he’s been spending time since production was shut down thinking about what happened.

“The world is different than it was when I was a little kid. You know, what I always thought was funny as a little kid isn’t necessarily the same as what’s funny now,” he said. “Things change and the times change, so it’s important for me to figure it out. And I think the most important thing is that it’s best for the other person. I thought about it, and if it’s not best for the other person, doesn’t matter what happens for me.”

Murray stated that “what would make me the happiest” is if both he and the woman are able to “go back into work and…trust each other and work at the work that we’ve both spent a lot of time developing the skill of.”

As for his behavior and learning from his mistakes, Murray stated that “I think it’s a sad dog that can’t learn anymore.”

“That’s a really sad puppy that can’t learn anymore,” he continued. “I don’t want to be that sad dog, and I have no intention of it.”

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on April 21 that Searchlight Pictures suspended production on Ansari’s feature directorial debut after there was a complaint of inappropriate behavior, filed the previous week, involving Murray. A source close to the Being Mortal production told THR that the director and his producing partner Youree Henley were working with the Disney-backed studio to figure out the next steps.

Searchlight is currently investigating the matter but told THR in a statement that they do not “comment on investigations.”

The film, based on the Atul Gawande nonfiction book Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End, also stars Ansari — who wrote the script — Seth Rogen and Keke Palmer.
