Discounts On Lego, Resident Evil, More

Image: WB Games / NetherRealm

This week, all at once, a perfect storm of deals, discounts, and sales has hit the Nintendo Switch eShop. Batten down the hatches, open up your wallets, and check out some of these limited-time deals, including massive savings on numerous Lego titles, Mortal Kombat games, and hits from Capcom, Ubisoft, and Bandai Namco.

Before we go any further, just note that—with the exception of Ubisoft’s Mario + Rabbids—there aren’t any Mario, Zelda, or Kirby games on sale. Instead of first-party discounts, all of these sales are focused on third-party publishers and developers. But there are still plenty of great games to grab up for cheaper than usual, even if Mario and Luigi aren’t part of it.

Here are some of the best deals I spotted cruising through the various sales currently happening on the eShop. While all of these sales are ending at slightly different times, you more or less have until the end of the month (or a few days past that) to take advantage of these discounts.

Now, with that out of the way, here are the best deals I found so far. (The figures in parentheses are the normal prices.)

Lego DC Super-Villians Deluxe Edition – $11.25 ($75)
Lego City Undercover – $6 ($30)
Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 Deluxe Edition – $9 ($45)
Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga – $30 ($60)
Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate – $15 ($60)
Dragon Ball FighterZ – $9 ($60)
Dragon Ball FighterZ – FighterZ Pass – $10.50 ($35)
One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 Deluxe Edition – $18 ($90)
My Hero One’s Justice 2 Deluxe Edition – $20 ($80)
Sword Art Online: Hollow Realization Deluxe Edition – $7.50 ($50)
Just Dance 2023 Edition – $30 ($60)
Immortals Fenyx Rising – $12 ($60)
Assassin’s Creed Anv. Edition Mega Bundle – $45 ($100)
South Park: The Fractured But Whole – $15 ($60)
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen – $10 ($30)
Ace Attorney Turnabout Collection – $35 ($60)
Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin Deluxe Edition – $25 ($70)
Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate – $12 ($40)
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy – $15 ($30)

That’s everything that seemed cool to me. What other bargains are catching your eye?

Revealing Mortal Kombat 2 Code Leak Pulled By Warner Bros.

Image: Midway Games / Nether Realm / Warner Bros.

Over the Winter holiday, someone filled all Mortal Kombat appreciators’ Christmas stockings up with something a lil’ extra: Mortal Kombat II’s source code on GitHub. The lawyers at Warner Bros. took exception to this by issuing a swift DMCA takedown notice that Github adhered to by disabling public access—but don’t fret, as there are other ways to check out the content dump.

Initially reported by Exputer, the Github post was uploaded to the internet hosting service on December 27 before getting reshared on the r/MortalKombat subreddit. While MK II’s entire source code is no longer available thanks to that DMCA takedown, that hasn’t stopped MK fans from reuploading sprites and artwork on social media.

The most notable elements of content that the MK II source code dump unearthed was unused animations, artwork, and moves that didn’t make the cut for the game’s release in ‘93. One piece of artwork was an alternate attract mode screen featuring an oiled-up Shao Khan. Although the alternate panel of Sindel’s spurned lover looks the same as MK II’s final Shao Khan attract mode screen, the unused artwork has a bunch of cloaked wizards on floating platforms in the background instead of a roaring fire. According to Polygon, the original artwork is more imposing because it illustrates how stacked the odds are against Earth Realm. Honestly, yeah, a bunch of platforming wizards is leagues scarier than a generic flame, especially if you’ve had the misfortune of playing the ‘97 beat ‘em up spin-off, Mortal Kombat Mythologies.

The MK II leak also showcased some previously unused sprite animation and moves. If you don’t have time to parse through a nearly-three-hour YouTube video of some dude scrubbing through the GitHub files, here’s a detailed Twitter thread compiling all of the most notable findings, Twitter user Pegasus Kid combed through the leak and uploaded a comprehensive thread of cut moves, stage art, and fatalities. My favorite sprite, since everyone was wondering, is Kintaro walk cycle animation because it’s timed perfectly to the music in the Metal Gear Solid but its the Dr. Livesey Meme video.

Kotaku reached out to Warner Bros. and Nether Realm studios for comment.

Mortal Kombat and Injustice Boss Confirms Some Good News for Fans

NetherRealm Studios boss, Ed Boon — the creative director of both the Mortal Kombat series and the Injustice series — has some good news for fans looking forward to the next game out of the Chicago-based studio. This coming spring, it will be four years since the release of Mortal Kombat 11. Four years isn’t a very long hiatus for most developers, but NetherRealm Studios had developed a cadence of releasing a new game every two years, alternating between Mortal Kombat and Injustice in the process, so it’s a long break for it. This is why many expected to get Injustice 3 in 2021 and then Mortal Kombat 12 in 2023. The latter could still happen, but obviously, the former did not.

It remains to be seen which of the two series NetherRealm Studios is currently working on. History suggests it’s Injustice, but rumors and reports claim it’s Mortal Kombat 12. And of course, it could be neither of these things. It could be another IP or something brand new. Whatever the case, whatever game comes next from NetherRealm Studios, it won’t be free-to-play. And with so many competitive and online games going free-to-play, this will be music to the ears of hardcore Mortal Kombat and Injustice fans who will the series to continue as is.

The news comes the way of Ed Boon over on Twitter, who didn’t say much, but when asked if his next game will be free-to-play, he simple responded “no.” Of course, things change all the time in game development, but it’s safe to assume whatever NetherRealm Studios is working on, it’s pretty deep in development, which means it’s very unlikely it’s going to u-turn from a premium product to a free-to-play product. It’s not unheard of, just not common.

As always, feel free to leave a comment or two letting us know what you think or, alternatively, hit me up on Twitter @Tyler_Fischer_ and let me know over there. What would you like to see next from NetherRealm Studios? Would you be interested in a free-to-play Mortal Kombat or Injustice

Mortal Kombat’s 30th Anniversary Bundle for PS5 Gets Over Here

Mortal Kombat is a treasured franchise among fighting game fans, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary at the beginning of October. Many had hoped that developer NetherRealm Games would commemorate the occasion as loudly as one of Johnny Cage’s jackets, and while that may still turn out to be true – well, the firm’s 30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle isn’t going to be earning the firm many Friendships.

Available to pre-order on Amazon UK – but technically not yet officially announced – the package includes a copy of Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate for PS5 and last year’s maligned movie in 4K Ultra HD. To be fair, it does only cost £29.99, which is likely to work out at around $34.99 in the United States. Moreover, it includes a pretty tasty Amazon Exclusive steelbook case, which looks really nice.

Please note that some external links on this page are affiliate links, which means if you click them and make a purchase we may receive a small percentage of the sale. Please read our FTC Disclosure for more information.

But we’re not entirely sure who this is for. You’ve got to imagine that Mortal Kombat super-fans will already own Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate in some form, and will probably have seen the film, too. It’s likely this is just part of NetherRealm Games’ series celebrations, with the bundle due out on 26th September, 2022 – a whole two weeks before the anniversary itself. Hopefully this is merely a case of Warner Bros trying to find a creative way to flog more copies of the game – and the really exciting stuff will come later in the year.

Mortal Kombat Leak Reveals Disappointing Plans for 30th Anniversary

A new leak associated with the Mortal Kombat video game franchise has revealed some disappointing news to coincide with the 30th anniversary of the series. In early October, it will have officially been 30 years since the original Mortal Kombat game first hit arcades. As such, a number of fans have been hoping that developer NetherRealm Studios would look to celebrate this occasion in a special way, perhaps with a re-release of some older entries in the series. Sadly, a way of honoring the 30th anniversary does seem to be coming, but it’s not in the way that fans wanted.

Spotted on Amazon recently, a new 30th anniversary bundle associated with Mortal Kombat seems to be releasing next month. Rather than this bundle containing any older installments in the franchise, though, the package merely contains Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate and the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie on Blu-Ray. This “30th Anniversary Ultimate Bundle” is said to be launching on September 26th and will also include a special steelbook that features art from the new Mortal Kombat film.

While there’s nothing wrong with this bundle on its own, as mentioned, it’s definitely not something that Mortal Kombat fans have been asking for. For a prolonged period of time, many in the Mortal Kombat community have been asking for remastered iterations of some of the original games. Namely, new iterations of Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Mortal Kombat 3 on modern platforms have been highly sought after by fans for years. And while it was hoped that these games would finally be coming back as a way of celebrating the three-decade history of Mortal Kombat, it doesn’t look like these wishes will be granted by WB Games for the time being.

Do you have any interest in this upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 anniversary bundle that will seemingly be releasing next month? And do you think that new versions of some classic Mortal Kombat games will ever arrive? Let me know for yourself either down in the comments or hit me up on Twitter at @MooreMan12.

Mortal Kombat 12 Seemingly Teased By NetherRealm Producer

Image: @Jandy_NRS on Twitter (via VGC)

2022 marks the 30th anniversary of the brutal, bloody, and violent fighting game franchise Mortal Kombat. NetherRealm has already confirmed it’s moved on from Mortal Kombat 11 after two years of DLC – to focus on its “next project”, so what’s next?

Although there have been a lot of rumours over the past year that the studio could be working on a superhero fighter, NetherRealm’s senior production manager, Jonathan Andersen, has now uploaded an image via the social media platform Twitter, which appears to tease MK12.

Up in the top right of this shot – filled with artwork and posters of past entries, there’s a file on the computer monitor labelled “MK_12 Mast…” and in an email on the screen, you can make out the following lines:

“fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace…take extra care with this material.”

It definitely seems like this could be an intentional internal ‘leak’ to generate some excitement. The photo was only up for about 10 minutes before it was removed, which kind of plays into the whole thing.

Considering NetherRealm wrapped up MK11’s development last year, it only makes sense for it to now be working on the next entry. VentureBeat journalist Jeff Grubb also claimed NR was prioritising MK12 over a possible superhero fighter because of uncertainty tied to its future under its parent company (Warner Bros).

What would you like to see from the next Mortal Kombat game? Did you check out the 11th entry on Switch? Comment below.

Old Clip Shows The Birth Of Mortal Kombat’s ‘Get Over Here’

Screenshot: Ed Boon

You’d be forgiven for thinking that every move and every system you’ve ever enjoyed in a video game has been planned to the last meticulous detail. But hey, sometimes a thought just comes to you, and the results stand the test of time.

Here, for example, is a wonderful old video that’s been dug out of the archives by Mortal Kombat cocreator Ed Boon, ahead of the series’ 30th anniversary next year. It shows a ton of behind-the-scenes footage from the original game’s creation—the kind of stuff Boon has posted on Twitter before—but in this case it goes beyond just looking at the actors and shows some on-the-fly development in action.

This is wild. Scorpion’s spear throw, one of the most iconic moves in fighting game history, was just…thought up on the spot, with actor Daniel Pesina right there, ready to workshop the whole thing live. Boon elaborates on the footage in some follow-up tweets, explaining stuff like how important it was that the actor limit the number of frames used to capture the move, and how parts of the throw ended up using “recycled” animations.

We certainly did a ton of prep for our video shoots, but some ideas came to us while filming. With Scorpion’s spear, it started with “You know what would be a cool ass move?”. From there you can be a fly on the wall and see us working through the details.

One of those details was how fast Scorpion threw the spear, which had to be quick so he could catch opponents by surprise. This meant keeping the animation simple & very few frames. We also wanted the spear to pass over a ducking opponent, so we kept it at chest height.

We were so tight on memory, that we didn’t even capture any motions for the victim reactions. Instead we borrowed from their existing animation frames. You can hear us talk about reusing one of the victim’s “knockdown” animations when they initially get hit by the spear.

We also borrowed the victim’s “fatality dizzy” frames to show they were stunned after being pulled in. Reusing existing animations was one of the many tricks we used to save memory, which was so much more limited in 1991.

A few things make me laugh watching this so many years later. Try counting how many times you see my arm reach out from the right side, trying to (ninja) mime the move. Also hearing @therealsaibot describe how he wants to make the rope like a snake by saying “shh shh”.

Also… did you notice how young Ed Boon really likes to use the word “WAH” to describe things? WTF?

Finally, while there was SO MUCH more involved with us creating this classic move (fx, sounds) it’s still kool to see the germ of an idea that eventually became so synonymous with Mortal Kombat, and duplicated SO MANY TIMES in future games, movies, tv, animation & comics!

I know “eureka” moments must happen all the time, maybe even just like this, but fans getting to see them in action so many years later is just very, very cool.

NetherRealm Ends DLC Support For Mortal Kombat 11 To Focus On “Next Project”

© WB Games

Smash Bros. Ultimate isn’t the only fighting game winding down. It seems NetherRealm Studios will also be ending DLC support for its 2019 release Mortal Kombat 11.

NetherRealms confirmed this over on Twitter, and also mentioned how it was now focused on its next project. It supported the latest entry in the series for two years with additional content.

Following its original release, a story expansion titled Aftermath was made available alongside Robocop in May 2020, and this was followed by Mortal Kombat 11: Ultimate Edition later on in the year.

At this stage, it’s unclear what exactly NetherRealm’s next game is, but there have been rumours about it being another superhero fighter. Keep in mind, nothing has been officially confirmed.

Did you see Mortal Kombat 11 through the end? What are you hoping to see next from NetherRealm? Leave a comment below.
