NC weather: Freezing rain, ice expected throughout parts of central North Carolina Saturday morning

RALEIGH, N.C. (WTVD) — Thousands across central North Carolina are currently without power as freezing rain moves throughout the state.

A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until noon Saturday for much of central North Carolina.

The advisory stretches from Wake, Durham, Orange, Chatham, Nash and Edgecombe counties north into Virginia.

Person, Vance and Granville counties were upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning on Friday afternoon, where an additional .25″ of ice is possible. The Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for the Triangle, northern Orange and Durham counties could see .10″ of ice, less to the south.

The warnings/advisories will now last until Sunday at noon, although there should be little additional icing after Saturday early afternoon.

According to Duke Energy, more than 1,000 customers in Chatham County are experiencing power outages.

The original advisory was issued Friday morning and it included chances for ice Friday and Saturday morning.

The first round of winter weather was mainly felt around the North Carolina-Virginia border. Rain turned to a small amount of ice accumulation on raised surfaces–such as tree limbs and railings.

However, a second round of rain arrived Friday night and temperatures dipped below freezing.

Freezing rain is likely from the Triangle to the Virginia border.

Only a light glaze is expected in most of the Triangle, with perhaps some bridges or overpasses developing some ice. Temperatures are only forecast to drop to 31 or 32 at RDU, so ice accumulation is pretty difficult at these temperatures.

If we drop just another degree or two, ice accumulation will be greater.

Farther north, temperatures will drop to about 29 or 30, and this is the area where up to .15-.20″ of ice is possible. This amount of ice can lead to a few power outages and roads may be more of a concern in the morning, Hohmann said. Typically, .25″ is the threshold for more effects from freezing rain.

The freezing rain should end by Saturday afternoon.

We have the potential to pick up an inch to an inch and a half of rain on Saturday, through Sunday morning. We could also wake up to a slick spot or two Sunday morning, especially north of I-85.

The ABC11 First Alert Weather Team will be working around the clock to monitor any changes to the forecast. You can catch those updates in this story, on television, or in our apps on your connected devices.

The Morning After – Engadget

Bang & Olufsen’s audio gear nearly always comes with some prohibitive price tags, so I’m not too shocked by the $2,000 MSRP on its new portable speaker. It also looks classy, timeless and seems surprisingly functional.

You can move the Beosound Level from a wall mount (sold separately) to a side table to outside. It even comes with its own magnetic charging puck a la MagSafe. Inside, a five-speaker array — including two four-inch woofers, one two-inch full range driver, two 0.8-inch tweeters and low distortion amps — handles all of your audio content.

It comes with a replaceable streaming module that will power more of the company’s upcoming in-home speakers. Bang & Olufsen claims the module has “enough processing power and connectivity technology” to accommodate updates to improve performance and new features in the future. The company also says the speaker’s “modular” design allows customers to perform easy maintenance tasks, like battery replacement, and gives service partners better access to key components. I can’t vouch for how future-proof it truly is, and yes, it’s still a $2,000 speaker — $2,300 if you want the gold option. Still, I kinda want it.

The electric Hummer and Lyriq make appearances.

In GM’s Super Bowl ad, Will Ferrell has had it up to here with those smug Norwegians and their EV buying habits. A humorous attempt to take the fight to them coincidentally highlights the company’s plan to release more electric vehicles over the next few years.

How close is that, exactly?

If you believe CNBC’s anonymous sources, a car deal between Hyundai/Kia and Apple could be right around the corner. Similar to previous rumors, people in the know suggest Apple wants to team up with an automaker for the platform of its electric vehicle, with Apple’s Project Titan team designing most of the hardware and software.

By all indications, they could have the first electric vehicles ready to roll out by 2024, and the design will focus on a fully autonomous driverless experience.

A virtual receptionist is just the start.

Zoom’s latest update helps you minimize contact with others in meeting rooms and beyond. It starts at the front desk — a Kiosk Mode lets a virtual receptionist greet you from a Zoom Rooms for Touch device.

You can also view the occupancy of a meeting room in the Zoom Dashboard with compatible cameras, and check a room’s air quality (after a February 11th upgrade) with a Neat Sense monitor to ensure it’s well-ventilated. You won’t have to touch shared surfaces as often, either. You can use the Zoom Rooms Controller app to steer a meeting on your phone rather than using a shared controller. Rooms for Touch users can likewise steer the desktop of the person currently sharing their screen. A future upgrade will also bring wider support for hands-free voice commands, including Alexa controls.

PlayStation had its best quarter in history.

Sony never seemed to have enough PlayStation 5 stock since it launched, but still managed to sell 4.5 million of the consoles in 2020 — matching PS4 sales during that console’s 2013 launch quarter. Profits were also up 50 percent to 80.2 billion yen ($763 million), due to increased game sales amounting to 484 billion yen ($4.6 billion), which actually doubled the 240 billion yen ($2.3 billion) in hardware sales.

That’s good, because  Sony loses money on every new PS5 sold because it set “strategic price points for PS5 hardware that were… lower than the manufacturing costs.”  The business plan for a game console remains the same — make money through game and service sales after building up a suitable installed base.

Jennifer Aniston has been hard at work on the set of the second season of her hit Apple TV+ series The Morning Show.

‘Ah! Sorry, guy!’ exclaimed Aniston playfully as she captured video of a seemingly mangled test dummy on the backlot.

The Friends star captioned the post ‘rubbernecking’ due to the fact that her and her co-stars were so intrigued by the morbid sight.

She also jokingly added ‘Exclusive BTS’ to her post.

Meanwhile, a production assistant could be seen lifting the test dummy off the ground and onto a lift.

During their panel at the Television Critics Association press tour, Jennifer and Reese, who happens to be an executive producer on the series, spoke briefly about the boundless potential for The Morning Show’s second season.

‘I feel like at the end of this ten episodes, there’s a whole new world order. It’s chaos. No one knows who is in charge and what leadership means at this point,’ said Witherspoon during the show’s panel, as per Deadline.

‘I think that’s what we’re exploring in the culture right now as it goes topsy turvy, what is the new normal? I’m excited that we’ve got a lot more to explore.’

The cast of The Morning Show was asked about how they felt about the reaction to their series, to which Aniston replied: ‘Word of mouth has been lovely. We’re thrilled with the response to the first season.’

Wednesday was not the first time that Aniston chose to give devout fans of the series a glimpse at the set of season two.

On Tuesday, the Just Go With It star shared two snaps taken in her hair and makeup trailer, featuring go-to hairstylist Chris McMillan.

Morning Report: Dana White says he can’t remember a better UFC debut than Michael Chandler’s at UFC 257

The bulk of the headlines coming out of UFC 257 will center around Dustin Poirier’s upset victory over Conor McGregor (as well they should) but in the co-main event, Michael Chandler did everything he could to steal the show. And though he might not have quite pulled it off, Chandler did impress his new boss, Dana White.

The former three-time Bellator lightweight champion signed with the UFC last year and made his promotional debut to much fanfare against Dan Hooker on Saturday. Going into the fight, much was made of the jump in competition between Bellator and the UFC and even Chandler himself called Hooker one of his toughest matchups in the organization, one he took because Hooker was the only top guy who would even agree to fight him. But when the cage door closed on Saturday, Chandler made quick work of Hooker, knocking him out halfway through the first round. Afterwards, Chandler jumped on the microphone and cut a promo on the two main event fighters and current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov. It was an all-around sensational debut and one that got Dana White’s attention.

“When guys come into the UFC for the first time, they usually have a rough first time on the big stage,” White said at the post-fight press conference. “He didn’t. He came out and it almost seemed like Hooker froze in that first round. Chandler was just all over him and put on an incredible performance. Listen, man, when you get the platform we had tonight, you make the most of it, and that kid did. Some people did tonight and some didn’t.”

So impressive was Chandler’s debut that immediately afterwards the MMA community began questioning if it was the most impressive one in UFC history and when asked the question, White struggled to think of one better.

“That kid fought like he’s been here for years,” White said. “So yeah, off the top of my head I can’t remember a better one.”

Whether or not it’s the best debut ever is a matter of opinion but Chandler has certainly put himself in the conversation with guys like Anderson Silva, Junior dos Santos, Ronda rousey, and Joe Lauzon. It wasn’t, however, perfect. At least not to White.

Following his victory, Chandler climbed to the top of the cage and performed a backflip off of it, nearly missing his landing and stumbling across the cage.

It was a celebration that White lamented when discussing Chandler’s debut.

“Do you guys hate the backflips as much as I hate the backflips?” White asked, unprompted. “They just f*cking — the kid gets his fight in the UFC and then does a backflip that looks like it’s gonna blow out both f*cking ankles, knees, and his spine. I just, I don’t get the backflip thing and I don’t like it. Somebody’s gonna get f*cking hurt doing that.”

Fortunately, Chandler did not injure himself and now will look to build off the momentum of his sensational debut, either with a title shot or another big fight. Now that he has a top-10 win inside the UFC, there will be no shortage of options.
